Fun place to take kids. Easy parking. Not a very exciting course but I love all the course nods to Oakland. Good beer on tap and the food is good too. The bummer is we came here 3 times this summer around 6:00pm and the place was crowded yet the chef decided to take his break so they weren't serving food from 6-7. As a family of 4 living in Alameda, we are so happy that Subpar is back and better than ever! We had a great time last night - parents and kids (6 + 8), equally. We love that we can listen to a band, grab some food + drinks, and play golf with our kids. A really fun family outing. One thing, and it's a big one, is that the acoustics are really bad and the noise is truly overwhelming. We left after only 90 minutes with our ears buzzing and our kids overstimulated. We couldn't wait to get out of there. That was a bummer because we may have stayed longer to listen to the band and grab some food. Between the band (and honestly, yay for live music!), the video games, and the packed house, it was a lot. We want so much to come back and make this a regular part of our family fun night rotation, but we hope that the owners will consider doing a bit more work around sound proofing and noise control. I very much enjoy coming to play here a lot. It's a fun and easy thing to take friends to when they're visiting especially with kids, or on a date. But each time I've come, I've noticed a larger and larger dip in quality. The course has quickly fallen into disrepair and seemingly easy fixes have gone without fixing over the course of several months. The red light on Hole 19 with masking tape over it; the plastic inside many of the actual holes being broken and possibly even a safety hazard given the sharp plastic shards; broken or missing pieces of mirror/glass on the hole with the disco ball; and many other things that have become detached that need to be glued back on, just simply with a note that says to the effect of "Do Not Touch". It's hard to tell when, or if, there's ever an actual manager on site. The young staff usually seem overwhelmed and lost about what to do especially when its crowded, with wait times growing and groups piling up as the flow of play gets choked. It would be a good investment to either train/re-train a few of the existing employees into more of a supervisor/managerial role, or hire some new staff with managerial experience and ensure there is a manager on site at all times. Some more suggestions: perhaps a 21+ or 18+ after certain hours; discounts on Early Bird or Weekday play; rewards program to provide a free round after so many paid ones; course descriptions telling the story of each East Bay landmark theme would be so cool. Also, Glow in the Dark golf has been alluded to since the place opened in late 2022, yet still nothing. Definitely rooting for this place, but my expectations have dropped considerably and I may not go back if things haven't improved soon. read more

What a great addition to Park Street! The staff at Sub Par is wonderful. We took the whole family there and the kids had an amazing time. I love the Bay Area themed holes and that they have an arcade and pool table as well. This is a great spot for a date night or just fun with family and friends. We will definitely be regulars. This place was so cute and exceeded my expectations. It was spacious and I loved that each hole was designed after a Oakland, Alameda, or Berkeley landmark. I went on a Thursday afternoon and it was empty! We were the only ones in there for awhile. But since the holes had a easy to moderate in difficulty. I am so excited to see Subpar back in Alameda! I can't believe I'm saying this considering how awesome, incredible, and fun the layout of the last place was, but I think this place may be even better than before . Exceptional EIGHTEEN (18!) hole mini golf course PLUS a large arcade AND separate laser maze challenge course. I am far and away blown away by how Subpar has completely transformed this space. Such a local and fun mini golf course (historical too if you take the time to google local history that each hole is based on like I did). I appreciate the large variety of arcade games to play which are all exceptionally fun and nostalgic. I'm so excited that Subpar is back in Alameda and I can't wait to hang out in the arcade and on the mini golf course, even just to see the very kind and helpful staff that works here! read more

I took my nephew here on a Friday night. Had a great time. We started off with mini golf. Couldn't wait to do par in order so we randomly pick the once's that were available. Pros: they have everything you need. From mini golf to arcade games and game prizes. Also 3 pool tables. Beer and wine and finger food was great to have. Staff was great. Cons: staffs have to be more attentive on teenagers who is just hanging around game station/booths.(not even playing) it's very annoying to see that. It just make others like my nephew and I can't go play. So we just skipped ahead and play other games. read more

Wonderful arcade/golf entertainment on Park St Alameda. Very clean and sanitized venue, it does get crowded over the weekend. There are sanitizing stations all around the place. The mini golf course displaying Oakland landmarks is right in the middle/side of the place. Arcade games, pool tables, air hockey table towards the opposite side. We played a bunch of arcade games, similar to D&B style games. There's really not much indoor activities to do in Alameda besides movies, restaurants, bars, gym so Subpar was a great additional to Alameda. read more

"Good!" That was Marco's answer when I told him I wouldn't be coming here again. (I'm not sure how you're going to stay in business with such a rude response.) Between his repairs of the course, Marco was hovering around us - glaring and making it impossible for me and a fellow dad-friend to enjoy mini golf without his jokes about our attempts to putt (as he points to a sign saying, "this rule is for guys like you.") And my 4 and 6 and 6 year olds are doing their best, but when they don't understand the difference between which parts of the courses you can and can't walk on (what Kindergartner would know that instinctively?) Marco continues to hover and won't give the parents the opportunity to teach their own kids golf etiquette, instead, he starts in with condescending remarks about our parenting. No "let's figure this out together," or "I've noticed that...", just a rude man who is clearly unhappy with his life and taking it out on others. "I'm never coming here again," and Marco says, "good!" (That says it all for me.) read more

I wanted to give this place 4 stars since it took forever to get back to me when I tried to reserve a party room. I filled out the inquiry room, sent a couple of emails, left voicemails and walked in to speak to the manager. It took about 5 days to get back to me when it said someone should get back to me within 48 hours after filling out the inquiry form! I'm writing this to share my experience so you don't get turned off since we finally did have the party - and everyone in the party had fun and the staff there were attentive. Our partygoers had fun playing the cool mini golf course, and a blast with unlimited arcade games during the time of our party. This is why in the end I'm giving this place 5 stars. We even gave a nice cash tip to the person that served our party that day since she was very nice and helpful. Tip for the Subpar management if they're reading: You need to do a better marketing job since many of our partygoers, who live in town, have never been to Subpar until they attended this party, and they all said it looks like a lot of fun and they plan to come back on their own next time. read more

We had an amazing party today at Subpar! Maria helped us from the very beginning, and I knew drove her crazy. She helped me from start to finish and helped me coordinate every detail. Maria went above and beyond to help have the best birthday party experience. We are so happy and grateful for her support to make this day so special! Today during the event Micah was our host and let us equally drive him crazy with every request and special ask. He helped us coordinate everything down to the minute and figure out what to do with 18 or so crazy kids that we let run loose at the venue, thank you so much for your patience with us Micah! Different things to do besides golf Easily accessible tables to sit at Food and drink on site Clean The bad: Food is almost always sold out or not available-- lots of stuff on the menu simply not available. Right now there's a boba menu up there (the only non soda, non alcohol)-- and they are not actually serving boba anymore. Disappointed kids. They can't seem to figure out food service and what they can make easily and quick. Even with nobody waiting three beverages took 10 minutes to get. Nobody behind us, not sure why they don't just pour drinks right away? Food is gross fried food. There are many family spots with good quick food in the area-- Chabot Space and Science, the zoo, Fairyland just updated their menu-- that have fast and healthy options. How about some premade salads, carrots/dip, sandwiches? Anything perishable? These would take less time. Or contract with Eastend or the natural grocery. Also big bummer-- We came twice during the week at low business times Yesterday, a Wednesday, was our second time going that we moved quickly through our round without stopping, paying mind to to clock and others-- but we were held up by parties ahead of us and stopped from play. We'd appreciate either being able to finish another day or more help on the floor keeping play moving smoothly. After 8 the attendants at the desk have nothing to do, as new play stops. Maybe they can help, or stagger holes for more efficient play-- starting on the back 9 for example. Once we came in the afternoon, and after we paid full price, the entire place filled with a school-- kids on every hole all around us. We could play no more than a few holes. NO direction or help from staff at all-- they didn't even set foot on the course. It was kind of a nightmare and very unsafe. Our family comes here often but I've been noticing that the managers are really lacking. The black young lady at the front desk was very mean to the customers in front of us. She seems upset. And she just care but the other staff were kind after she left. I was told that the managers were rude but I had to see it for myself. One time my family came here but they had a yelp event which is probably why they have all these 5 star yelp reviews because it was free event. So don't be fooled. It was nice when it first opened but now is just falling apart and over crowded. We no longer order food because it takes a long time. One time my wife ordered a drink and it had mold on the ice. Worst mini golfing experience of my life. We came here to celebrate my father-in-laws Birthday and the front desk service was unwelcoming and unprofessional. We are the most understanding people too. We came in to inquire about our party and she didn't even try to look it up, she just responded "I don't know, I wasn't here" didn't even attempt to ask or look up our reservation. & for some weird reason when my mother-in-law started walking over, she knew exactly what the reservation was. She threw away my husband's beer because we left it at hole 7. When we asked about it, she was rude. & to top it all off, we heard her talking about us to her employee. Cute place, fun concept, terrible service. They have only 1 job: that's to give us our golf clubs & balls! It's a shame this was our experience for my father-in-laws birthday. This is a great place to bring the whole family, prices are reasonable, and they have a lot of awesome bay area themed putting holes. Even if you don't particularly like mini golf, this is still a great place for cheap entertainment, as they also have quite a few arcade games and laser tag. We didn't have a good experience at this.place especiallly the staff was very rude. We couldn't find a party room for my son's birthday so we decided to just book minigolf package online and order the food from their cafe. Two of these accounts members told us we aren't even allowed to hold the gifts which made no sense. It should be none of their business if I hold the gifts in my hands. We immediately stored them in the car at the start of our visit. Since a staff member said it was fine we handed off the cupcakes to the kids while they were going out. Another staff member came to me and said she will have to charge me 170$ even if the kids were just taking their cupcakes on the way out. The kitchen staff was very impolite and reminded me I wasn't suppose to receive the gifts. We had a horrible experience because of the kind of employees at Subpar. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. My oldest is a teenager. She didn't want a birthday party. She invited 4 friends to go mini golfing plus her sister. We drove by this place many times. We thought why not give it a try. We entered the building with my 2 daughters and one of her friend at 11:45 am on a Saturday. It was not busy. I purchased 6 mini golf passes for the kids. They're teens so they said they're hungry. Problem 1: I asked if they serve food here. They said yes. I go to the food kitchen and ordered 2 pizzas. I was informed that they have a private party going on, so they can't serve anyone else until 1 pm. I was already not happy. I didn't understand why they couldn't make two pizzas. I went back to the front and requested to give feedback. At this point the kitchen manager Marco approached me to tell me that he can in fact make me pizza. He just can't make any fried food. I said that's fine. I paid for the pizza. My husband mentioned it's our first time and our daughter was excited to come here instead of having a birthday party. Problem 2: A few minutes after paying for food, the manager Marco approached me and lashed out. Telling me that I can't have a birthday party without reserving a room because it's taking away from the party room revenue. I was so confused. I said we aren't having a party. I'm just buying food for 3 kids that are sitting right here. He then tells me you're not allowed to have a cake or sing happy birthday. I again tell him we aren't having a birthday party. At this point my husband was mad. My husband responded saying we're here to buy food and play mini-golf, what was the problem? The manager Marco said typically that's what people do, they don't book a birthday party and they show up and sing happy birthday and bring cake. We were baffled, we were simply trying to order pizza, eat, then play, but coming at us with an accusatory tone was very unprofessional. I have never in my life been berated for something I have no idea about. I didn't even have a cake or anything that would indicate that we are celebrating a birthday. If I didn't already pay for the food and mini golf, I would have left. Problem 3: The pizzas came out. Marco proceeds to tell us we can't sit at these table (these tables we had been sitting at since this entirely started). Because they're are already reserved. There was no signed to indicate that the tables are for other people. The tables were in the common area. He also told us we cannot push the two tables together. Apparently anything and everything we were doing is against policy even though we are paying customers. And there are no signs anywhere. Problem 4: The pizzas were cold. They were not food safe. Both pepperoni and cheese pizzas were both below the food safe temp that is required by the HEALTH DEPARTMENT. The cheese didn't even melt completely. Problem 5: When I asked to speak with an actual manager of the business, the workers said there was no one available until 3pm. What kind of entertainment establishment opens and doesn't have a manager on duty until 3pm (it was 11:45am). They gave me a phone number to text their manager Alicia. I texted her, and no response even as we left. Overall, spend your money else where. Also, by the time we left at 1:45 pm, the tables they kicked us out from were empty. No one even used it the whole time we were there. This place doesn't care about paying customers. They won't last long because there are so many other places that would treat you 100x better. read more

Love the concept. Have an indoor mini golf course and feature famous Bay Area structures. Fantastical! I love the concept. I love the space. It is very open. I did not love the long wait. We had a reservation but were waiting to get through the course with everyone else. What is the point of having a reservation if everyone that walks through the door gets to go and play. This created a huge back up. We were waiting for two groups to play before we could play a hole and this was for the duration of the course. My wife said let's wait to start but I said if we wait, they are not stopping anybody from playing. We would be so far behind. We felt rushed while playing that my wife did not want to play and stopped after the 3rd hole. I get it, playing customers. More revenue. But the experience was not the best because we felt rushed and could not enjoy the details that made up each hole. I would recommend to try and go when it is not busy. read more

One of our favorite places to play as a family. Our toddler loves playing the arcade games, and the reusable and rechargeable card makes it easy to pay. I appreciate how large and airy the space is; we usually mask indoors but feel comfortable here without masks. They have a nice selection of local beers and yummy fried food. Food is alright none special to report. Service is fairly friendly depending on who helps you. Family friendly and so much fun 10/10 do recommend. The later it got the more busy it was. The pool tables could have been spaced better. The distance between the three pool tables made it so you had to take turns to take a shot. What a great place to host our kid's birthday party! I booked a mini party in advance for 10 people and was greeted by a party host at the door. We were shown to our reserved tables and checked in to start our round of golf right away. I had already pre ordered our food and it was ready when we finished our round. After that, it was an hour at the arcade - which was perfect for this group of 9 year olds - who were each given a separate card. Love the venue, the service and the fun!
