Today I-had the worst food service of my life at the above Restaurant ,I spend $30.00 Dollars with tips, One of the kids sandwich was partially cold, asked the cook to warm it up and was told that it wasn't possible, that it happened cause the kid left it on the table for to long, the cook and another helper put their bear hands on it and told me that they were to make a new one after tossing it on the garbage, after about 10 minutes I asked the cook about the sandwich, the Owner, perhaps the manager refused to do another one unless I pay for it, or I can forget it. Incompetent staff, they close at 9 I showed up at 810 or so they take my order throw the meat on the grill and 5 minutes later 3 more people show up. The guy tells someone to lock the door lol he proceeds to take the other 3 peoples orders all without ever attending to my steak on the grill 15 minutes later he gets back to attending to my steak never flipped never chopped never anything scoops it up and throws it on a roll. Ok whatever let me pay and get out of this place.. the guy then proceeds to go to the back of the line to attend to his buddy's needs all the while everyone else is looking baffled as they go through the same process I just incurred. After somewhere between 5-10mins of watching my sub sitting there getting cold while I was standing at the register with money in hand. This place has the absolute best Philly cheesesteaks in the area! I come every Wednesday for their $4.99 deal. I honestly enjoy them and have been here a ton of times over the last few years. Will continue to be regular. However, they DO tax you on everything & anything. $1 for card transactions, fifty cents for every topping(shrooms, onions, cheese, even hot sauce) I do find this cheap on their part but don't mind due to the sandwiches being so good. I used to frequent Substantial Subs both the one on 57th avenue and this location too! I'm happy to see it's still around and the subs they cook up right in front of you are hot, fresh, delicious, fully loaded, and ready to go whether you're going to eat it inside or take out to go! Where Substantial Subs does a great job is the customization of your sub and when I say customization... You can really get CREATIVE! You can mix a steak and chicken bomb together, or throw sauce on the grill or even a combination of sauces! If you're feeling adventurous this is definitely the spot where the employees will help you out and give you solid recommendations. So why the three stars you may ask? Many times I have been to this location and the tables more than half the time aren't clean and overall the establishment isn't very clean... there have been times I've stopped by and I've seen flies in here before. Luckily I didn't encounter that on this trip, but it definitely deserves some attention to detail if customers want to stay and enjoy their meal inside. And if you do end up staying inside to eat you will end up smelling like hot subs for the rest of the day. They're not my favorite subs, but they're pretty good! read more

Portions used to be better but seem to have been reduced. Also they charge extra for cheese, which should be considered standard on must subs (especially the meatball). But they don't tell you up front cheese costs extra until you get to the register. Pretty decent food and friendly service is a plus. If you have a business meeting following your visit there, make sure you have Febreeze in the car, as your clothes will smell horrible from being inside the restaurant. I've been to substantial subs several times and the subs were great. Tonight I purchased 3 subs and each sub was horrible. There was hardly any meat on the subs, very little tomatoes and an overload of onions. Neither one of us were satisfied. 2 pastrami subs and 1 steak -- very dry. read more

Where to start ? Dirtiest sub place I've been to in a while. The subs are not worth the price and the customer service absolutely blows. They are very rude. Easy to see how they feel about their customer service if you notice the picture they have up for their establishment; it is a sign on a trash can that says "comment box" which pretty much means they don't care what you think about them and that truly is the philosophy they have towards their clientele. For someone to be so confident about their product it better be damn good and these are not. They are sub-par, mediocre at best. The meat is almost always overcooked and to cover up the lack of cooking ability and protein know how on the cooks behalf they smother the proteins in so much sauce your bread is mush by the time you get your order. Ordering over the phone is always a hassle because sometimes they want to deliver and sometimes they don't - I guess it depends on if the person who is attending you has their panties in a wad that day. Their fries have a 5000% daily value of sodium in it - practically inedible since you have to brush off the seasoning just to get one to taste "OK" and you still have to chug down half a refreshment to undo the Sahara the fries have caused in your mouth. In addition, they have recently posted up a very informative and slightly insulting sign about a certain company they have apparently had ordering problems with. I understand having issues with certain customers but you don't announce it to everyone else as if its supposed to help the situation. Just like that client who posted she was a first timer and they announced it to the whole store. Are you kidding me? How about we as clients find out trash about you and come into your place and spread the word like you have? Maybe this place doesn't want its' clients to know they have a bug problem or that most of their workers have a criminal back ground or that they haven't past your most recent inspection but if an angry client would find that out they could get this place closed down. Not saying these things are true but word of mouth is reciprocal. I don't know about this business owner but I know good business is smart business and this owner is losing major money by letting his employees treat people like trash. To top it off - their cookies are the greasiest things I've ever had in my life. If I wanted a hard ass cookie dipped in oil I would pick it out of the trash behind a restaurant. I live around the area and this place is just awesome . Their like a little hidden sub spot but have been around since I was growing up . The prices aren't high at all besides the fact your getting fresh meat! Friendly workers as well I love the and suggest chicken or steak bomb . Looking for something light the chicken Cesar is awesome as well ! The burgers are very different here as well they can put it on a old fashion bun or a sub bread . Their shirts say "If we don't meet your standards, then lower your standards". It was between fast food and this place...my standards were already low and this still disappointed. It was not clean. They advertise a cheesesteak sub for $4.99 and then ask if I wanted other toppings but neglect to tell me they cost more. When I questioned the cashier about neglecting to inform me of the additional charges he said with attitude as if he didn't really care "I didn't take our order man". I said I won't be back and he said "that's fine....you're just one person". I find it funny that there is also a sign on the wall that says "Hot beer. Lousy food. Bad service".
