DO NOT COME HERE. I have been a customer of Suburban Automotive for about 5 - 7 years, but after yesterday, I will never return. I dropped my car off for an oil change, and when they called me after looking at my car, they said I needed approximately $900 of repairs, including a new sway bar and a tire rotation. I immediately knew something was off, as I had gotten new tires only 2-3 months ago, and thus, there would be no need for a tire rotation. I gave them the go ahead to do an oil change and a new air and cabin filters, but I wanted to get a second opinion on the rest. When I picked up my car, they had charged me $250 for an oil change and 2 new filters, which is absolutely outrageous. Today, I went to another mechanic for a 2nd opinion, who actually pulled me into the garage to show me that there was no issue with the sway bar that Suburban Automotive claimed was on the verge of breaking on the right side. This experience is similar to what other reviewers have said: while this shop was trustworthy in the past, they have shifted to ripping customers off. If this is how you treat loyal customers, then you simply don't deserve to have any. read more

Beware! Scammers! they will perform repairs to your car without permission and then hold it for ransom.

Brought my car in July 2022 to get the brakes fixed because my normal auto shop was closed and it was an emergency. During their "inspection" they claimed the battery also needed replacement, so they did that as well (adding an extra $250 for parts+labor). One year later, my regular mechanic noticed during a routine oil change that my battery level was getting very low and the original Honda battery was *still* installed. So it seems this service was not actually performed by Suburban Automotive. Lots of reviews seem to tell a similar story. Do NOT trust these guys. read more

Danny Brennan used to be the best...I met him in 1997 with my third ever car. He was trustworthy, never overcharged, and even kept us up-to-date on upcoming maintenance issues. He was friendly, courteous, and competent. Timeliness was never his strongest suit, but it could be overlooked as we lived very close and could check in personally often. Danny Brennen might have missed a deadline, even by as much as a week, but he never lied, overcharged, or sold lemons. Nothing written above has been true for years. Danny Brennan has become a liar and a cheat. Danny Brennan literally took advantage of a widow that loved her car. Danny had been there for us in the past, but recent behavior can't be overlooked. In hindsight, going back several years he's been too busy, misses too many things, and generally doesn't care about his clients. The lies and missed deadlines aren now constant. Parts "on order" but then they aren't the solution. The last straw was waiting 5 weeks for Danny to even look at my mother's car, after many lies about parts...even to the degree that at one point his office guy actually told us it wasn't there, Mom must have taken it -- I was about to call the Police to report a stolen car. We were out of state with Mom and he had the only key. Same office guy lies constantly about messages, or Danny is senile? Or was the car missing...does the staff at this place joy ride in our cars? Rent them out? The real answer is unknown. We wouldn't have been with Danny at this point at all other than he'd been "trying" to fix this car for YEARS. It was under his care being repaired for THIRTEEN months after he convinced my mother not to total it. Danny insisted he could fix it, and he hosed a 74 year old widow. The car was her pride and joy, a gift from her now passed husband. Danny insisted he could fix it for $17,500 in a few months. THIRTEEN months later, he tried to rake the insurance company for much more money, and he was denied. We have a used vehicle from him, as I mentioned, in the past he'd been solid and honest. This car was a lemon. After paying $10,000 for an older Subaru, a car he claimed he'd gone over with a fine-toothed comb and had one owner, was within months barely running -- Danny had the Subaru for weeks at a time claiming parts were on order, but never specifying exactly what the issues were. We now had no cars working at the time reliably, but the promise of a fix was always a moment away. Finally, he found a "hose", but it was "on order"... After having a DESPERATE conversation with him, as we were driving to Georgia for my father's wedding, he claimed he'd have it ready for us. Danny Brennan lied once again, had we trusted him at all at this point we would have missed my father's wedding. That "hose" turned into $3,175.35 in repairs, no warning...no call -- just a bill for the "hose." Detailed at that point, when we had to pay, otherwise we'd be stranded without transportation again, for who knows how long? We were caring for my mother and had moved 30 minutes from Danny now, rather than the building next-door. Now to even check on any status we had to take a bus, Uber, or if one of the vehicles was working we could drive to check on any status. Danny will never return calls, I logged dozens of unanswered calls. Even showing up in person and begging to have Danny call back went unanswered. I made the office guy scroll through the CallerID while I was there once when he claimed I hadn't called. Lies and deceit. Today, excuses abound from Danny Brennan. If your car happens to be there now, never ever ask Danny a question... My husband is convinced it adds three days if you just look at him. RUN, do not walk, to anywhere else for service if you value your time and sanity. Ask anyone, you will get honest answers. Those that have not YET been burned by his incompetence are sure to be. read more

We moved to Oak Park 24 years ago, and found Danny from a colleague of my husband. In any case, when he was checking out my Camry, he asked who worked on my car in the past as my 6 cyl. Camry was only using 4 cyl. and someone sold me very expensive incorrect plugs and forcefully screwed them in wrong trying to make them fit (not that they told me as they knew I wouldn't find out as I was moving, as my 4yr-old told them.). I knew this was correct as the last shop said the same thing and refused to even try as they didn't want to be responsible if they broke in two, then I'd have a much bigger problem. Danny took them out, fixed our Camry, and then showed us our parts and gave us a quick Automotive 101 and explained what they did wrong. Since my husband wasn't really a 'car' guy, it was good for us both. Long story short, ever since then, he kept our two cars going until they were 16 & 18 yrs old when my husband gave his Nissan to one of his students who drove it for another 5 years; and I traded my Camry for my Pilot, which is now on it's18th year. Danny also works easily with insurance adjusters; and he told the adjuster my.Pilot shouldn't be totaled even though it was 15 yrs old when my catalytic converter was sawed off while parked in the city, and because of where they cut it, it was a $2.200 job! (That was the portion the insurance company paid without blinking an eye!) I paid $250. The adjuster said he heard he shouldn't total the car from my mechanic, so because of the movie system, he could get away with it! Thank you Danny! And yes, he shows you exactly what he charges down to the disposal of the greasy wipers - because it is a cost of him doing business. And while he's a "bigger" shop now, he does not get the perks of being a franchise of one of the nationwide auto service centers who are told what they should charge. Yes, you can get it cheaper, but before anyone touches your car, find out what they know about them! Danny is a certified Master Mechanic, and while maybe not perfect (who is), he has to charge you even if he's just giving you a quote. Do you work for nothing? He's charging the going rate scale. Danny doesn't let just anyone work on your car, he's got to trust them and know they know their stuff. He's busier than hell because he's that good - he works on anything, what types of cars are in his shop! And yes, at times he surely could use a competent receptionist/office mgr who could answer the phone, get back to you, and know his billing program and take your payments. And no, he's not the cheapest! And he won't do anything that's not by the book, like adding more Freon to a 16 year old AC system - things like that could lose him his certification. He's not in at 7am because he's there so late, on his feet, constantly working. And now you can spot him by his shock of grey hair (it happens to all of us and we all got older!) Danny is usually with a phone in one hand while he's helping 3 people get out of the shop or helping his mechanics get their cars done and making sure they are returned very clean. He's saved me from getting ripped off from a towing company one night when I got stuck in Chicago. I told him what they were telling me, and he said tell them to tow it and take my time coming back to the shop --he'd talk to them. Once they released my car to him, he told them he picked the wrong woman to try to rip off, so no-one was giving them any money on the side for 'out of the city' charges as I was covered with my AAA membership and he was reporting them to AAA. They obviously didn't wait for me to get there to write them a check. He's also always took the time to look at our cars even when we'd stop by at 6:30pm! Once Danny checked my battery as the car was having trouble starting - because my terminals were caked up with white. So he taught me if I just clean the terminals, I'd be ok. (So now I always check and make sure I have a metal brush and heavy duty jump cables, along with some wipes to clean your hands in the trunk! After my car failed an emissions test because of some code, he fixed the issue and then told me how fast and how long I needed to drive my car to clear the unseen codes before going for my inspection so I wouldn't fail again. I was so curious I almost bought the meter that would have shown me as they'd shut off; but not a car geek yet. I trust Danny, he has never steered us wrong; and though you may be able to get it done less expensively, I've had a few issues regarding going just on price in the past. In my experience it couldn't get any worse. I work right near these guys so one weekend when my car was acting-up-probably-dying-not-going-to-make-it, I brought my car to them thinking I'd like to give the local shop a chance. The issue was that my car would only run for a few minutes at a time and the battery was dead. I talked to the manager who said they would take a look at the car and call me if the job went over $200. A few days later I get a voice mail that my car is ready. I go over to pick it up and guess what, the bill is a whopping $575!!! And for what? It gets better- they had to charge my battery- which cost $90; they replaced my battery with one that cost $150 (insane); bring my car into their shop a few feet away $priceless; and some other miscellaneous stuff that I can't even remember at this point. Needless to say, I was effing furious. 1- where was my phone call, I would have left the service at the battery being charged if I knew I would have to pay nearly $100 just for you to hook up something and walk away! 2- you really had to bill me for every little thing and you expect me to believe that the little amount of work you DID do was worth $575- pfft, please. 3- where is the Better Business Bureau when you need them? I will never, ever go back here nor will I give this place any sort of recommendation aside from- avoid this place at all cost! While were on the subject, like everyone else who works in "No Park/Oak Park" have your employees get stickers and park in the designated spots rather than alongside the building; Keep your customers out of the way and from choking up the alley and illegally parking in places that aren't even spots (seriously, where are the parking enforcers when you actually need them?); And follow through with what you discuss with a customer so you can avoid bad word of mouth. I had taken a few of my previous cars to Suburban over the years, and always had a good experience, but my most recent interaction with them last week put them at the top of my list from now on. Our car wouldn't start a few days ago, and when I called Danny, he remembered me, even though it had been at least 3 years since I dealt with them. Get this, he sent someone TO OUR PARKING LOT - jumped the car, brought it back to their shop, fixed it, cleaned the hell out of it, and had it back to us in the same day, for a very reasonable price. When I brought my daughter to pick it up, one of their super cool gear head's showed my little one around, giving her first tour of a mechanic's garage. Great service, very attentive. Complete opposite experience as the other posts. I have had great luck with these guys. I have taken my Honda Accord to these guys a handful of times in the last 3-4 years. What got me to bring my car there the first time was the inability of another mechanic I went to to fix an engine light. Long story short- they did a lot of work on my car to fix it, explained everything they did, and charged me a fair price. Since then I have taken my car back to them for a few minor problems and they have always been professional and fair. Even when I bring in my car from minor work they take the time to check everything and even wash it before they call me to pick it up. Great! They do charge a good/high price for an oil change (though considering the neighborhood its hard to call anything overpriced) but in my experience all there other pricing is good. Factor in friendly service and a free wash and its all good. If you have a problem with your car in Oak Park, I would recommend taking it to Suburban Auto and having Danny or John take a look. read more

I've been coming here for 22 years now with all my cars, and lots of my friends cars. Danny does awesome work, at a fair price. He dosen't make stuff up, or tell you to fix things that aren't broken. If something is wearing down, he'll let you know, and if it needs to be fixed now, or if you can wait. Hes an honest man, that does honest work. In my 40+ years of driving cars I have never experienced the competence and professionalism I experienced this summer at Suburban Auto with Danny. I drive an aging Lexus and can't part with it. Thanks to Danny, I am still driving this great car and expect to for awhile. Prices are incredibly reasonable given the time and care he puts in. For those who wish he'd call with a revised estimate - yea I agree. But I trust his decision making and have never felt ripped off. My partner had a very hard to find part fail after her car was repaired and he spent considerable time and energy making it good; no charge. I have had Danny work or his employees work on cars for years...almost 20 years. I have never had a communication problem with him, except that he is really busy. Why is he busy? He does a great job. He is honest and thorough and willing to work with you. Sometimes communication problems may be the customer, don't you think? I have never had any problem...how is that? The shop is busy because they do great work. Took my BMW here because it was running hard and the engine light (dummy light for me) was on. I should have brought the car in weeks ago, because of potential catalytic converter damage. Danny was kind and patient in the way he explained what could have happened and instead of being condescending, he taught me a bit more about my car. Wow, just wow. $147 for an oil change and tire rotation (albeit with synthetic oil)??? I told him my regular place charges $75 for the same thing. Told him that they had never called to let her know the car was ready; he said he had told her it would be ready at noon, which was not true. My girlfriend also said that it was hard to get anyone to acknowledge her arrival this morning, and it was the same thing just now. Didn't even look over our way and give a 'just a sec' signal or anything. Told him we had called a couple of times to see if it was ready, but the phone went to voicemail. Then he launched into how they were redoing a brake job that was botched by my usual place. I said, hey man, I'm just telling you what our customer experience here has been, how I'd been going to [my usual place] for 15 years, always a good experience, but wanted to give him a shot because it's just a block from the house. That's when he puts his hands up and says, "Enough! I've been here 20 years. Take your cars someplace else." Consider it done, Danny. Consider it done. read more

NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! I read the other reviews of this prior to taking my car here and I should have listened to the fact that there are more negative reviews than positive. Long story short, my car was overheating, I took it here against my good judgement from the reviews because it's near my work. He had the car for 3 days, NEVER CALLED ME when he said he would, told me my radiator fan was out, then I needed a new thermostat, THEN he told me I might as well get rid of it because I need a whole new engine. He barely looked at the car. I got it towed to a friend recommended mechanic nearby, Larry, stationed out of Moran's Garage. Larry couldn't have been nicer, told me it was the water pump, switched it out for $300 and it's been running fine ever since... and it only took him 5 hours. Go to Larry even though Danny was hollering at me that I shouldn't take it there because Larry is a drunk and doesn't know what he's doing. My co-worker also brought his car to Danny and didn't have it for a week for a minor repair. Couldn't have been a worse experience with Danny and Suburban Automotive. I even had to pay for a rental car while he had mine kidnapped. read more

Danny is more than a mechanic/owner - he has provided invaluable advice on new cars and insurance issues, helping us buy and sell cars, honest and fair service, etc. The shop is always busy...the occasional minor inconvenience of having to wait a little longer or follow up on a phone call is a small price to pay for what you get in return. I'll keep the story as brief as I can, but please read the other reviews. This automotive shop came highly recommended so I had no reservations about taking my car there for service. I had a positive earlier interaction with Suburban Automotive but they didn't actually do any work on my car. This time I returned with a car seriously in need of a diagnosis and repair. I left the car for service, was told the next day I needed a major repair based on fault codes, etc. The estimate seemed high but again I trusted their expertise based on a personal recommendation. I paid for the repair (over $1000 + 2 day rental) and my car ran fine for just over a week until the almost identical issues surfaced again. I took the car back to Suburban Automotive thinking surely this will only be a slight adjustment issue because after all, the problem was identified less than two weeks earlier and fixed. Boy was I wrong! The next day when I called (note I called) it was explained that this time it was a different problem than the one I paid over $1000 to have fixed less than two weeks earlier! As I listened to the explanation of what this 'new' problem was, I started getting a sinking feeling that the first diagnosis was wrong and I was now out of over $1000 with a car that still had serious issues. The good news for me is they couldn't do the second repair for reasons I won't go into here. This was a good thing because it turns out (I learned) the second diagnosis was also incorrect!! Judge for yourself. Here's what my regrettable visit to Suburban Automotive cost me: 1. Initial Repair =+$1000 2. Rental Car fees =+$50 The Fix 3. Cost to have the correct issue identified and addressed =Around $1000 4. Additional rental car fees: +$100 Did I have over $1000 and over $150 in rental car fees to waste? Not hardly, but transportation is important to me not just for practical reasons but for family reasons as well. No acknowledgement will be made by Suburban Automotive that they got it wrong this time (all facts) at a significant cost to the customer. I share this experience so you can be aware and more alert than I was. No bad people here, I'm sure they get it right more often than not but that just wasn't the experience I had with Suburban Automotive. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS! Similar issues to the above, but with one extra "gotcha": Three weeks after getting my car back (the "2-day" repair took almost one week) I received a notice from the Village of Oak Park Office of Adjudication. On the night that I retrieved my vehicle, Danny had left my car in a permit-only lot (next to his garage). At 6:05, my vehicle was cited for not having a permit. Of course, I had no idea until I received the letter. I called the shop and got "John" to answer, but repeated calls that afternoon all went to voicemail. I was able to reach Danny the following week. He assured me that he would pay the citation online. I just called the village 30 minutes ago and he has not paid the citation, so I paid it myself. read more

Danny arrived late and when I indicated that I wanted us to figure out what was necessary before accepting the repair he gave me back the keys and told me he wouldn't look at my car and that I should take it elsewhere. I had a great experience here at suburban automotive. My car died literally across the street as I pulled into a parking spot. I walked into the shop and Danny the owner came out and help me to try to start it. Since we are a lost cause they pulled it into the shop for me did a diagnostic and had it repaired within 24 hours. I don't even live in Oak Park! The shop is very clean well-maintainedand he taught me a few things about my car that I didn't know. I've had my infinity for 10 years and have done tons of work to it so this time that he spent explaining things to me that's a lot. Lights illuminated suddenly, shockingly, on the dashboard of my 2008 Toyota Prius while driving Backwoods Georgia. My sister rifled through the owner manual to decode the symbols and I called Danny Brennan, the independent mechanic authorized to service Toyotas in Oak Park, Illinois who'd maintained my Toyota all the years I'd owned it prior to moving to Bluffton, SC this last year. I told him what I was seeing and where I was, and he advised me to get to a tire company or Advance Auto in the nearest town, but if the light started blinking, pull over and get it towed. "Have them attach the diagnostic device, get the code number and see if they are able to clear the code." In Waycross, GA I actually found Walker Jones Toyota. They said they were closing. It was 4:55, they close at 6:00, but not this day evidently. I said, "But, but you don't need to fix it, just see if the code clears so I can drive the rest of the way home or park it till morning." Well, we're closing, they reiterated, so I tried a tire company and finally an Advance Auto, got the diagnosis: POA93 (sensor malfunction) and they were able to clear it, with direction from Danny on my cell phone. With the admonition to stop and get towed if the light reappeared or flashed, Danny cleared us to go. We got home just before dark, unloaded the car and uncorked a bottle of wine, mute with fatigue, dusty from fan-blown 95° mechanic's bays and my phone rang. It was Danny Brennan. "Just wanted to make sure you made it home okay. Take it in to your Toyota dealership tomorrow and have them call me if there's a problem with free replacement." 9:30 at night. For Danny Brennan, Closing Time is evidently when he's done everything he can in a day for his customers, in this case, his former customer. read more

As a single woman, it's important that I have an auto shop I can trust. Danny and his team at Suburban Auto take great care of me and my vehicle. They look proactively at what needs done, explain everything very clearly (Danny would make a great teacher), make recommendations but never push unnecessary repairs or costs on me. Because they are always working on cars in need or have projects in the wings, I can't always get them on the phone, but they always seem happy to fit me in when I stop by for an oil change or whatever is needed. I pay more than I would at a quick stop place, but the extra service, dependability of care, and to have them know my vehicle and its history is worth it to me. read more

How do you spell Honest? Suburban Automotive! They quoted me a price for a few repairs, including coolant service as it was due for changing for the age and mileage and I approved the work. The only thing Danny did right was accept the tow of my car to his shop. All down hill from there. After expressing the importance of feedback so I could make a decision about other car arrangements, I get no calls. Finally after a reminder call to the shop I get a quick response with a quote $200 more than the local chevy dealer where I bought the truck. After a discussion of my options Danny demands I get the car towed out of his shop which I gladly arranged. My wife shows up with cash to clear the invoice for diagnostic charges and Danny wont let the situation go. He thoroughly upsets her and now he has lost two customers. When I informed the dealer of the change of plans he states he is surprised that an independent small shop would charge $200 more than a dealers shop given the dealers higher hourly shop rate. And for the record the dealer had the part in stock. read more

WE have taken our cars to Danny for years. He has guided us in making decisions about the solution, and gives us a quote if we ask for it. He has commented about a certain model of a car and it's inherent problems or pluses. We buy all our cars used, and they include Mercedes, Hondas, and Hyundai. He's always willing to send someone over to pick up the cars, or extra wheels, or whatever. They used to be bad about calling back when the car was done, or holding it for awhile. You just have to tell them when you need the car back. Since he has an office manager, things are better, and they always wash and clean the car. We trust Danny and his mechanics, and recommend them. read more

The above review is correct. The long and short- they changed three tires and he alignment on the car was worse than before. I called Danny two times but he never called back, then I tried a third and he said "the only thing they don't do is alignments". Can you believe? Everything they did to the car was $900 and they couldn't do an alignment. Oh the funny thing he changed the brake bulb but didn't charge me for the bulb. WOW thanks. He sounds very smart and gives you the details of what they are doing. But the price goes up and up and you never really know what the real price is going to be. They replaced the evaporator core in my jeep's AC system. It's a labor intensive process, so I knew it would be costly. Got the jeep back a week later and it cost about $1,200. Wasn't blowing cold though, barely cool. Dropped it back off. Took them forever to get around to it. 2 weeks later and another $400 and they said it was done. No difference - barely cool. They told me that everything checked out! I told them I really needed the car for work, but that I would have to bring it back again. Well, I ended up not being able to get it back in that year. The next summer, when the AC wasn't working, I decided I didn't want them to mess with my car anymore so I took it to Lake & Thatcher. They charged it and told me that it wasn't working properly. They recommended dismantling the dash because it was likely the evaporator core! Thanks for nothing Suburban Auto. read more

NO NOT GO HERE!!! Danny ruined all of our cars and he is only out to get your money. After going to Danny for years we took our car to get checked by a friend while visiting Ohio and said that he has purposely been ruining our cars so that we go in for service more often. After talking to friends in the Oak Park neighborhood and past customers of Danny we realized that we were not the only ones who have experienced this.
