Suburban Tap...a good example of lost potential. I've been going to this place since it was a Taco Mac. It's at the point now where it's its own place; they've changed the menu enough that you wouldn't know what it used to be. The food, for the most part, is pretty good for what it is. It won't win any awards, but if you're just looking for some generic American cuisine, it certainly will fulfill any cravings. Where it stumbles the most is the service. I've never had good service here. The bartenders are, at best, unhappy to be working. It's pretty apparent they would rather be somewhere else, they get around to get you what you want simply because it's easier than hearing someone complain. Very unmotivated. I remember when I once went there alone around 9pm on a weekday. The restaurant wasn't busy, most of the tables were empty. I waited by the unmanned seater's counter until someone finally came up and asked if I wanted to sit at the bar or get a table. I told her I'd like a table for one. Her response was, "well, there's room at the bar." Keep in mind this was not during peak hours; there were not many people in the restaurant. Recently, I noticed that they had a spicy food challenge, which got me excited as I am an aficionado of the ultra spicy. The El Guapo challenge is to eat 6 or 8 wings (I forget which) in 10 minutes without drinking anything during the challenge and for 5 minutes afterwards. The award for completing this challenge is a t-shirt. I discovered the El Guapo challenge only when I noticed it on the menu cover. I had actually gotten the sauce put on a chicken sandwich prior to this, and was not very impressed. Surely, they kicked it up a notch for the challenge. I accepted the challenge in hopes that it would be spicier than the normal el guapo sauce. Sadly, it was the same sauce. I had brought my bottle of Dave's Ghost Pepper sauce with me, it was the first spicy food challenge that I had to use my own sauce to even feel a tingle. After I easily defeated this challenge, I was told that they had run out of El Guapo t-shirts, and was given a shirt to some random Suburban Tap event from a year ago in which the t-shirts didn't get sold out. As far as heat potential goes, on a scale of 1-10, 1 being a head of lettuce and 10 being a molotov cocktail, I give Suburban tap a 5. read more

Let me first stay, in the words of Zoolander, I "really really really really" want to like this place. It's close. I could walk here. But after three visits over the past year, they make it really hard to like. It's a dive bar, but the only characteristic is shares with good dive bars is, it's a dive. They do have a tolerable beer selection, but I am most definitely a beer snob - hey, at least I admit it. Bud Light? Merely an inconvenient substitute for water. I guess I would say they had a large selection of rather average beers. The place was also a heavy smoking bar in the recent past. There was no smoking in the bar when we went, but boy could you still smell it. And as soon as anyone opened the door to the patio that smell was renewed. Not a deal killer, and you get used to it, but it does hit you when you walk in the door. The food is a different story. I don't remember what we had our first two visits but I remember that our opinion was similar. This time, we had "chicken wings". Seriously over-cooked...down right hard. Unfortunately our bartender was pretty busy and we didn't have the time to wait, so we just let it go and choked most of them down. It seems they are committed to making sure you don't eat UNder-cooked food, but they aren't as concerned that you're eating OVER-cooked food. The good news on the food front: the fries were good. Nicely cooked and seasoned - very tasty. And there were plenty of them. This was the highlight of the place. Overall, an average dive bar. A dive bar without the benefits of a dive bar speciality - certainly not the awesome wings, massive craft-beer selection or big, juicy burger. read more

I've been coming here for years and wish I could give a better review, but can't. I eat out at restaurants far too much, I must admit, and Suburban tap is the least consistent in regards to service and the food of any other restaurant in its class in the area. I am comparing it to Marlow's, Mazzy's, The Wing Cafe and Tap House, Tijuana Joe's, and Bradley's to give you an idea. I almost included the Black Swan Tavern, but BST is probably in a higher class. Service is hit or miss. Depending on who is working, the service can be friendly, fast, and accurate, or it can be rude, slow, and inaccurate (more in the RSI lately). I don't experience this with any other restaurants in the area. Its been like that forever here, outside of the rudeness, which I haven't seen here before. The food, is OK. They recently changed the menu and I haven't tried most of the new items. I did try one and it was something I wouldn't order again. Pretty OK-ish. The person who talked about the Reuben got it right IMO. A lot of the food is like that. The food can be prepared differently from day to day, depending on who is in the kitchen, but I have to admit that this has improved over the past year. It isn't as "suprise!" as it used to be, at least for me. Bottom line, try other places first and leave this for last. There is a lot of competition in the area that just has much better value and lower risk. See my list above. This place is still in business because it has been around forever and has gained clientele over the years. If this was a new restaurant with the same quality as described above, the place wouldn't last. I won't be back for a long time. read more

It's meh. I would give it less stars if Randy wasn't my server. (Which by the way if you want good service ask to sit in Randy's section). The food and atmosphere used to be very good a couple of years ago but now I can say I am thoroughly disappointed. It took us 15 minutes to get a waiter. There was one serving the tables around us blatantly ignored us. Luckily randy came to the rescue! We waited over 25 minutes to get our food on a Thursday night. At one point we saw a table that came in after us get their food first. We ordered the nacho tots and a widow maker. The nacho tots came with what tastes like the ground beef at Public schools and the widow maker came nearly burnt (I asked for medium). And there was random mushrooms on the meat (that doesn't even come with burger). Overall I'm pretty disappointed. Great service but the food was horrible. Oh and their nacho mountain is pretty bad now too. They just put the beef and chicken and beans in the middle of the plate and put the chips on top. They don't mix it together and there is barely any meat and beans. Don't know if it's bad management or bad cooks but they really need to get their act together. read more

we walked in and the host just stared at us. we were not greeted and it was kind of uncomfortable. then we waited 20 minutes before anyone came up to us. they came up to us because they thought we were a table they were running food to. then we waited another 10 minutes before even ordering drinks. we got our food and finished it and did not see our server again. we waited a decent amount of time before going up to the host stand to ask to get our server. no one ever came. we had to go to the bar and ask for someone to pull up our check and pay. the service here is typically not the best but it is tolerable. tonight was just bad. read more

Suburban Tap is certainly an unfortunate name for a wonderful family-by-early-evening and late-arriving-singles-and-late-nighters bar/restuarant. The place has certainly stepped-up its game the last couple of months of 09 and now in Jan, 10. The entire interior is being redone to replace the old and very tired decor that has been around seemingly forever. As for the food, it is standard bar food, yet, the choices are so much more than the ubiquitous burgers and wings. If you don't like families and kids, stay away on Fridays and Saturdays before 9p. But because it is packed with families at those times, you get an idea of the Tap's following. After 9p, families gone, packed with regulars and the those venturing OTP. Manager/waitress/bartender-ette Allie B is the cream of a top flight staff (and very easy on the eyes.) Trivia night, packed. And what other bar in Atlanta can boast impromptu jams with former members of the GA Satellites, Mack (orig. drummer) of Molly Hatchett, Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugents own) and others. We are regulars as are dozens of others. We go back for a number of reasons, mostly though, because it is the definition of a classic, very friendly neighborhood joint...and that is meant as the highest compliment. read more

I've been in here a handful of times in the past. Yes, it's a dive bar, but even dive bars have standards. Today was very disappointing. I had to ask for everything, including a glass, cutlery, the beer menu. They were out of everything and it took 45 minutes to get our food. The poor kid (under 21) serving us didn't know the first thing about being a server. The exasperated barmaid had to do everything, but was quite annoyed by it. If there were anything that made the bar special I wouldn't be so critical of it. But for an old pub with bad lighting and a halfway decent outside patio there's really not much to talk about. I give this place 4 stars. It is a good mix of young and old, it is smoke-free on the inside which means kids can come. The patrons are low key and are looking to talk sports, trivia, etc. I have read a number if the other reviews and quite frankly, I am not going to the TAP to dine. I just want a bite to eat and drink a few beers with friends. You can also watch a few games on a number of TV's. I'm a fan of this place. It doesn't have amazing gourmet food, but it's solid bar food, whether it's the burger, wings, the reuben, or the mountain of nachos. It's also not a dive bar -- I'd characterize it as a "neighborhood bar" with cheap drink specials and a decent (yet not too loud) live band every so often. It's got some big TVs for watching the game, too. Don't go here if you have any other expectations than a relaxing, laid back night of drinking with friends while noshing typical bar food. I ordered food through grubhub. My food arrived quickly. Looking at the food, it looked and smelled amazing. Then I started eating it. First, there was suppose to be a fried egg on my burger, but it was sunny side up. The bacon was burnt on the ends and soft in the middle. The burger was cooked to medium rare. There was no option to chose a temperature for the burger, so I just assumed burgers were cooked well done. It was terrible. The burger itself was burnt on the outside. The fries were way too salty. The ketchup packets they sent were sticky, I'm assuming by honey, but I have no clue. I threw it away. The second entree I ordered, it was a philly cheese steak. The bun was hard as a rock and the meat appeared to be old. Also, they forgot to include my blu cheese dressing. Needless to say, this was my one and only time eating there. So I've been to suburban tap plenty of times while living here to the point where we were almost regulars. Haven't been in a while but decided to go last night. Even though it was the 4th of July, the place wasn't packed maybe 2 tables max. We sat down ordered drinks, my friend ordered a beer that stayed at the bar for 10 minutes then became flat when he got it. When the food finally came, everything was wrong. I got the nacho tots which came with ground beef.. I got corned beef instead. my friends got 2 of the ranch burgers and they didn't come with ranch and the onion ring. When my friend said something about the burgers and the beer, the waiter rudely said "so what do you want me to do about it?" "It's outta my control I'm sorry" I was honestly perfectly fine eating it but without me saying anything, a manager came to the table mid bite takes my food and walks away. She comped everything of course, but the service and the food is not the same. I'm very disappointed and will not be showing up to the restaurant again. read more
