Know that I am a city boy and this is in rural Indiana. Two thousand people live in Cloverdale. We stopped on our way to a sprint car race not far from here. There are just not many dining options. I may seem prejudiced, but this comment is sincere and meant to be purely complimentary. My friend, from rural Indiana agreed. "This place brought to mind that it is where you go after the hay is stacked, the cows are in the barn, you are hungry and can get your fill of good food, cheap." The daily specials posted suggested I come back. Service bringing our order was slow, but our server apologized and explained a kitchen issue. No worries. We both ordered the quintessential Indiana sandwich - Pork Tenderloin. I got the grilled and he got the fried. Never in my life have I seen a meal called a "sandwich" that looked like this. The tenderloin was as big as a dinner plate. The bun looked a decoration more than the basis for a sandwich. The meat was easily twice or three times the diameter of the ornamental bun. Neither of us could even eat half. Deferring to my Hoosier native, he declared this one of the best tenderloins he ever had. Unfortunately, my grilled version was a bit dry. We have made tenderloins at home in TN. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they pounded that cut of meat into the shape they served.

My husband tried the breaded pork tenderloin. The breading was perfectly seasoned and the large loin was moist and tender. The bun was good, too. The hand cut chips were delicious. She figured I'd want my favorite--the big slab of meatloaf with Texas toast. Nope...no meatloaf...not this time. Her timing was perfect as I've seen advertised and heard from reliable sources about the famous "Big Al" from Pappy's. I made my request. She immediately agreed that it had to be tried. The Big Al isn't just a heaping mound of pork. It's a heaping mound of pork on Texas toast with just the right ratio of a sweeter sauce and.....here it comes....a big clump of Mac and cheese!!! It was like a modern day Dagwood with pork, Mac and cheese and sauce. WOW!! I have a sweet tooth. I like a bit of salty with the sweetness. But the creamy Mac and cheese with the perfectly chewy (al dente?) pasta made this sandwich a hit. The sandwich, along with their perfectly crisped French fries were a great combo. It was a HUGE portion and definitely required some to be held back for leftover lunch. Here's what makes the sandwich even better: this was designed by a local teen and his wishes were for some of the profits from the sandwich to go back towards a worthy organization. I stopped in for lunch as I was passing through town and was pleasantly surprised with all the menu offerings. Brewed coffees, lattes, teas and other beverages plus bagels, pastries and a rotating lunch option. I ordered a half/half Cobb salad and Jack & Tom grilled cheese sandwich. Both were loaded with flavorful ingredients, and the combo was plenty of food to fill me up, otherwise I would have loved to try one of the delicious looking sandwich cookies. Also I can't forget to mention, they have the good ice! The super friendly staff gives Gottcha a warm and welcoming vibe, and the hand-written "remember to smile" message on my tea cup was such a sweet, personal touch! My only wish was to see less single-use plastic silver ware and containers for dine-in service. Still, I will definitely plan to stop there again whenever I'm passing through.
