PSA: THERE ARE NO FIVE DOLLAR FOOTLONGS (at least for this month of November) This being an on-campus Subway, you expect it to not be as nice as other locations. However, every time I've gone, I've never been disappointed. During lunch hours, the line gets ridiculously long, but they'll open up the other side, which people often don't know about. Anyway, so the times I've gone, there's this amazing worker there who perfects my sandwiches. I remember one time I went during a lunch rush and my sandwich started falling apart a little. Instead of just smushing everything together and resassembling, he just made me a brand new one. I didn't even have to repeat my order to him... he remembered my order AND all the toppings. I really appreciated that because I know that it often gets really stressful when there's 15+ people in line. Overall, I've never had a bad experience here, other than the unfortunate lack of 5$ footlongs. The prices have gone up and it's not really worth paying 7$ for a simple sandwich, especially one that used to only cost 5$. There are few places at UCSD's campus with food that I would consider quasi-edible and Subway usually doesn't come to mind. In fact, there is usually a strange odor coming from their restaurant area so I normally steer clear of it. However, seeing as though it is the most reasonably priced, and relatively healthiest option (until I got my hands on it) I decided that it would be my lunch stop of the day. I had a coupon for a free double meat upgrade and, as ridiculous as it sounds, I decided to order a Chicken Bacon Ranch foot long sandwich...with everything. This thing was huge, and even the employees seemed to enjoy a laugh at trying to figure out how they were going to wrap it and shoehorn it into the bag. That said, the sandwich was pretty good. It seemed to lack a bit of the ranch, but certainly didn't lack any of the fixings, and I struggled to finish it. While there are more dining choices on campus than ever, few provide very good value for the student budget, and even fewer are actually good for you. I probably negated any real health benefits with my colossal heart attack of a sandwich (I estimate it was at least 1200 calories) it definitely went a long way toward satisfying my hunger pangs. I have no issue with employees restocking the line and wiping it down before helping the next set of customers. However my issue was that there was no COMMUNICATION between the employees behind the line and the customers. This Subway is about 3 stars in terms of food. I'm not sure why but every time I get my sandwich toasted, it is not as crispy as when I get sandwiches at other Subways. Even when toasted, the bread is still soft and can sometimes get soggy making the sandwich a little less appealing. The customer service at this location however is HORRIBLE. The last 2-3 times that I have been here, the staff has been extremely rude and disrespectful. I have never been met with a friendly face and they try to rush you out as soon as possible. After asking for 2-3 veggies they'll ask if you're done. I'll ask for another 1-2 veggies and they'll ask again. And again. The second time and third time I visited, I told them all the veggies I wanted from the beginning and afterwards they started packing it up before I got the chance to ask for spread with it. The staff is too busy about getting customers out of there as soon as possible to even bother with customer service. After my last few visits to this Subway, I have to change my review to a 1-star. I never thought that it could be this bad, honestly. The last sandwich I had was completely ruined. I had to eat it with a knife and a fork - the bread was completely soggy (pretty much looked completely gone) as it was drenched in marinara sauce from the meatballs, and the sandwich was stuck to the wrapper in many parts. I have been ordering large number of lunches for my staff for three weeks from a variety of restaurants in the past few weeks due to training we have staff in. Most restaurants have met the basic needs of my order, but Subway at UCSD went above and beyond. The basic needs of my order were met. The entire order was on time, well priced, and made just as requested. But in several areas they went above and beyond. 1) I brought the order in at 9:00am asking for it to be ready for pick up at noon. They answered enthusiastically, no qualms for the short notice, and no concern for them to be fresh during the rush hour. 2) As I was placing the order Cesar pointed out that two of the sandwiches may get cold in transport and offered to either make them last, wait for me to change the order, or whatever I would like. Mind you he did all of this while his staff handled the steady stream of customers coming in. 3) Then to make it even better when we picked up the food not only was all of it nicely wrapped up and easy to transport, but also the individual boxes all had each staff members name on them so I could easily distribute the boxes. Talk about above and beyond expectations! 4) Now all of the above compliments are for this particular visit; however, I must also add that I eat here rather regularly and often get their salad. I am consistently impressed with their speed (far better than nearly every Subway I've ever been too) and their friendliness even when I slow up the line a little bit with my sale order. It's the healthiest option at the Price Center, which is the only reason I ever go back. The employees there seem to have a lot of trouble understanding you when you order. I'm not certain if it's too noisy in there or if it's some other issue, but ordering just requires too much effort, and their accuracy is pretty bad. I loathe pickles and 50% of the time "everything but pickles" isn't enough to ward off the cucumbers soaked in evil. I have to object QUICKLY when I see them go for them at the end of my sandwich assembly. Lines REALLY long, unless you go super early. Not worth it. The convenience is often offset by long lines. The healthiness is cancelled by how much dressing I like. Soup, sandwich, cookie, chips--I like it all. However, a nice lunch is often met with the chatter of many many many students. The three previous cons does not hold true on weekends when I'm feeling health-conscious and studying. I guess it's because of the high food-to-cost ratio you can score by purchasing a 5-dollar footlong. Today I got the orchard chicken salad footlong, which has been advertised for a couple of weeks on TV and on billboards, AND it was also a 5-dollar footlong. Nice white meat chicken, lite mayo, apples, and cranberries worked well on a white roll with my favorite veggie add-ins. We all probably have had a Subway sandwich. I tend to get spinach instead of lettuce since spinach tastes better and apparently have more nutritional value? Oh, and they toast your sandwich too, giving in to the pressure laid on by the equally-mediocre Quizno's "mmm-toasty" campaign. If the queue goes completely through their ropes, it's about a 5-minute wait before paying for your sandwich. Any longer does not warrant my patience, and I'd rather head to another lunch option like Burger King (value menu), Panda Express ($4.99 Panda Bowl), or the Sunshine Market (really awesome $1.49 hot dogs). read more

Even though I went to school at UCSD for four years and now currently work in the School of Medicine, I don't eat here because the lines are always crazy and they move insanely slow. Plus, if I want a sandwich, I'll just make my own, I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for one, especially when I don't make use of all their fixins. But now with the 5 dollar foot long deal, it's a little more affordable. Plus, my boss offered to buy my lunch so of course, I ate here. I opted for the oven roasted chicken breast on italian bread with cheddar cheese (it's shredded, not sliced), olives, lettuce, and tomato. It was also toasted :) I thought the sandwich was delicious!! The chicken wasn't super juicy or anything, but it was far from dry. The cheese also tasted decent and the veggies were pretty fresh. My only irk is the service. I've been here prior to my most recent visit, and most of the time they act like they have a stick up their butt. They were a little mean this most recent visit, but I'll let it slide, it wasn't like some past experiences that I've had here... Even though I loved my sandwich, I probably won't be coming back anytime soon. The delicious-ness of the sandwich doesn't change the fact that the lines are always SO long and slow. How different can Subway be, really? The only thing that makes or breaks a Subway is their customer service. Unless there's a health hazard or something at one of the locations. The one at UCSD is okay--they aren't particularly amazing in customer service but they get the job done. Not sure if I'm just always stuck behind a picky eater or something, but it seems like I've got to wait a while when ordering my food. Sucks, but oh well. Sadly, today was the last day of September, which means no more $5 footlongs (boo). I usually go for the Turkey Breast on Wheat, with pepperjack cheese, and pretty much almost all of the veggies (except olives and jalapenos). I get this toasted which I really love. I love the pepperjack melted into the sandwich with all of thye fresh ingredients on top of it. It's delicious. But yes, Subway can only be as good as Subway. There isn't anything too crazy about their sandwiches, but they're solid. They make you full and for the most part are pretty healthy, depending on what you put in the sandwich. I'm in the second row of the velvet rope line, and can barely see the bread lady, when she asks what I want. Huh, who is that talking to me? I only see the backs of heads of those in front of me? Ok, I guess I'll yell, something I hate doing outside of sports. I'LL HAVE THE CHICKEN BREAST ON HONEY OAT PLEASE. Toasted? NO THANK YOU. Cheese? NO CHEESE, PLEASE. What veggies would you like? (Internal monologue) Wait that voice is different... yet another employee I cannot see... This pattern continues all along the sandwich line, culminating with them telling me to cut other people in front of me to pay because their subs were being toasted while mine was already done, which if I were those people I would be quite displeased, but since I was in a rush, and I was being yelled at by unseen assailants, I went with it. Got the sandwich back to my desk, take a bite, and it's pretty good, but seems oddly soft. Take another bite... something is missing... Open it up... THERE IS NO CHICKEN! They made and sold me a veggie sandwich. Because I never actually saw my sandwich at any point during the creation process, I had no idea that they never put the chicken in. After a long day of studying, my brain slips into delusion and has a way of convincing me that even the most horrid Price Center offerings look somewhat palatable, which is the story of how I ended up trying Subway, despite me knowing that on multiple occasions, I left quite disgruntled. Usually, the obvious thing that would deter me from Subway is the huge line, and I suppose there is a long line for a reason - Subway is much less toxic for your body than the rest of Price Center food offerings, which really isn't saying much. The service at Subway goes barely beyond taking your order and dispensing your food - they actually make some effort to customize what goes into your sandwich - hardly a plus but worth mentioning. I got the cold cut combo on 9-grain honey wheat. I usually get all the veggies except jalapeno or banana peppers because Subway is the only place where I've had really bad indigestion from eating peppers. The cold cut combo claims to have more meats than just bologna, but really, all I could taste and see was a thick layer of pink mass passing itself off as bologna. Kind of gross... Also, I have a feeling that the loaves of bread are laced with a high dosage of high fructose corn syrup because after consumption, the amount of mucus production, especially in my esophageal lining, literally doubles. I suppose the only positive aspect of Subway are the veggies - a comment not worth reiterating. Most of the veggies they'll give you is lettuce, which, to me, isn't really a vegetable, but rather, cheap mass. Overall, for barely over $5 for a foot long, it is a quick way to fill up and get back to studying, but I always feel like crap for the next few hours.
