Late spring may not be high season in the Deep Creek Lake area but that doesn't mean that the area…read moreisn't beautiful. I've spent a bunch of time in the area in the other seasons but seeing it spring was new for me. So was lunch at Firewater. I enjoyed both. As you might think from the name, Firewater is all about the drinks. Not only do they look beautiful but they punch above their weight in a tourist mecca. My Baby Got Daq was so much better than one would imagine for a cocktail on tap. Served in a coupe, this traditional daiquiri was made with anjeo rum, which gave it a gorgeous brown color. The simple (traditional with a twist -- pineapple!) recipe (lime and sugar) allowed all the ingredients to sing and you would be hard-pressed to tell that it came from a tap, rather than a bartender's careful hand. Drink in hand, the food menu acquitted itself just as nicely. My large (Southern) party made short work of the deviled egg appetizer. Likewise, my brisket sandwich (on gluten-free bread and served with a side of grits) was filling, smoky (with a crunchy bark) and deeply-flavorful.My group took advantage of the nice weather and are outside, enjoying the lovely water views and pleasant service. With a population the size of a New England liberal arts college, odds are if you're patronizing Firewater you're not a local. That's fine. Tourist cities need tourist dollars. Spend yours here. While in Deep Creek, this will become a trusted lunch destination. I'm just surprised I 'discovered' it so late after multiple trips.

The pretzel bite app is a must try especially with the queso! This is a popular spot, so expect a small wait if you go around popular dining times. Service was friendly! 10/10 recommend!

The coffee and specialty drinks here are excellent - I'd go back just for the coffee - but the breakfast sandwiches and pastries were an added bonus. You can smell the hot oil. When you order, you can't see the machine or the topping bar. What we saw first, at 11:45am on a Thursday was the female owner and her two daughters, we presume, because they were calling her mother and talking about the schedule. We were not greeted. We ordered 2 donuts, paid $5.xx and then the girl walked away. They didn't advise where to pickup or if she'd be back or what. So we walked around the wall and saw it was a glass wall, and you can see the machine. We thought the dough would be dropped fresh, and we would watch production. No, she grabbed what happen to be 2 donuts sitting in the hopper. I was thinking, aren't they supposed to be hot? I said maybe they are.. let's wait and see. So they iced them and topped them, put into a single box and handed us them at the end. We walked out on the balcony, opened the box and they were not hot. They were not "HOT" as advertised. I understand if I'm getting a dozen and I'm obviously taking them somewhere, but when two people walk in and order just two, is it safe to assume they are going to eat them now? If we ordered 3 would they have only made 1 more? Or all 3? I don't understand. We took a few bites and realized they aren't special, they weren't hot and the works and/or owners do not care. Period. There is no second chance and I will make sure to tell everyone about it. 1 bad experience will snowball and that's not what you want. But when your staple product revolves around hot donuts, you serve hot donuts. I won't be back and if anyone asks, I'll tell. Other than that it's not worth bringing up.
