Service stood out immediately--friendly, fast, and attentive in a way that makes a quick stop feel intentional rather than routine. The Charlie burger was the highlight of the meal. It came out cooked well, with solid flavor and a balance that didn't feel overdone or greasy. What really set it apart was the hot sauce--distinctive, flavorful, and not something you forget after the first bite. The fries were also done right: crisp on the outside, soft inside, and clearly made fresh rather than sitting under a heat lamp. Overall, it's a strong roadside stop that delivers better-than-expected food and memorable flavors. Worth pulling over for if you're passing through the area

So whenever I come home I must stop here at Charlie's and get a plate. Having grown up on Nick Tahou's in my college years, this plate is light years ahead of the old school. They have many offerings I always choose the cheeseburger plate with everything on it and banana peppers for a kick. Mac salad and tater tots are my chosen sides, opting out of the hash browns allows for a crunchier bite with those tots. They make their own pickles here it's serve yourself whether it's sweet or dill. Soda fountain has Pepsi products but offers more than Diet Pepsi for no sugar options which is nice. Service is excellent, as always and it's now impossible for me to finish the plate. It's fun to try, until later in the day. But I always come to Charlie's every time I'm in town. Must stop! I couldnt remember the name of the place but I did remember it was a great place to eat. As we were driving for a while without finding this mystery place I figured they had gone out of business (like so many other places that couldnt keep up with the chains) and we almost stopped at Burger King because we were so hungry. I decided to keep going and find another restaurant when a couple miles down the road there it was!!! I was actually excited when we pulled in. We sat at the counter and my wife and I both ordered the cheeseburger garbage plates with everything but relish and I have to say this was one of my top 10 meals! IT WAS DELICIOUS!!! I had a milkshake with my plate and it was awesome too. We were so happy with the food the server brought the owner and his wife out to meet us. Great folks! They told me this place almost became a Dollar General before they took it over!!! What a waste of a wonderful tradition for the people in that area. We do a lot of what we call "cheeseburger rides" on the motorcycles with friends and I have no idea why it took so long to get back to this place... I would make a long story short but its too late to do that. We are looking forward to returning here with my son (who was with me 35 years ago) and friends often. I hope everyone in that area appreciates this place and supports them as often as they can. These are the places that make memories for Generations and its shameful to see any of them go away. My last visit to Rochester, October 2024, visited and had a cheeseburger and a Zweigle's. Just like the old days everything was delicious. Visiting Rochester for this summer, ate there last week. AS it seems to be the "new normal" with restaurants, new owners, the prices increased while quality decreased... I ve never seen before, a hamburger costs $7.50 while a hotdog is more, $7.75 ????????? The burger was not very tasty and really, really thin.. So, as a loyal customer of greater than 50 years--- I will no longer go back. It is not that good anymore. As another reviewer wrote; "the new owners want to charge the price of quality without delivering it. Burger was not the same quality " This hit the nail on the head..

While it is located in a 1800s-era building, the "saltbox" in its name actually refers to its method of curing more than 15 varieties of bacon, one of the specialties of the establishment at 6152 Barclay Road in Sodus, the former home to the Heluva Good! Country Store. The deli/restaurant is a dream fulfilled for the husband-and-wife team of James and Sara Wheaton. The pair enjoyed spending time together in the kitchen and started cooking for large events such as her sister's wedding. With supporters encouraging them to take their cuisine to the next level, they hunted for a place to house a restaurant for more than a year. Finally, the building off Route 104 struck a chord. The eatery serves as both deli and restaurant. Cured and smoked meats, such as bacon, smoked turkey, pastrami and pork loin, can be ordered on their own from the counter. Bacon comes in 15 flavors including apple bourbon, garlic, maple and horseradish. My wife and I recently stopped into the Saltbox on a whim while in the area, after passing the sign for them many times in between trips to Rochester. Small building, and there were already a couple customers there at right around noon on a Saturday. You order at the counter, then sit at one of the 6-8 tables they have in the nicely renovated building, and they bring you your food. They have daily specials, and this days were burnt ends. We both ordered sandwiches - my wife ordered the "On Top of Old Smokey", a sandwich with smoked cheesy meatballs on a sub roll, with a spicy tomato sauce and provolone, served with chips, and I went with the Steakhouse Sandwich, a sandwich filled with brisket, bacon, spicy pickles, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion on a roll, and I swapped out the chips for a side of bacon mac and cheese for an upcharge. We also got a 1/4 lb of the burnt ends to try. The dining area filled up quickly, but our food was brought pretty quickly. We really enjoyed our sandwiches, especially the meatballs which had a great flavor. The mac and cheese was bland, but I have yet to find good mac and cheese at a restaurant in CNY. But the star were the burnt ends - absolutely bursting with flavor, straight up meat candy. Wife and I could've made a meal just outta those. The price is comparable to other BBQ places. The service was fine - employees weren't exactly enthused to be there. No one was rude or anything, but we almost got the feeling we were being bothersome to them, but could've been an off day. We would definitely go back to try other stuff, or just for them burnt ends.
