Amazing! I popped in last second as my hair was straight up disgusting. She gave me the best scalp massage of my life. I added curling iron to my wash and dry and it came out perfectly. I came in for a walk in at 9 am because I needed a last minute haircut and style before my cousin's wedding later that day and Sue's happened to be near the wedding venue and was the only salon that I called that was open at the time. Didn't catch my stylist's name so not sure if she was Sue but she did an amazing job! Shampooed my hair for me and gave me EXACTLY what I wanted from the reference picture that I gave, which was maybe the first time I've ever felt so satisfied by a haircut. She also charged me very reasonably with $80 for a wash, cut, and style. Definitely glad that I found this place at the last minute and would definitely come again! read more

11/30/2018: Sue's Hair Studio didn't remember me from visiting them quite a few years ago before YELP began . . . The costs performing the hair services, grooming waxing services have increased drastically as well as the gel manicure/pedicure despite, I provided my own gel nail polish. Still, I kept my appointment despite getting into that horrific taxi accident a day and a half ago; I called changing/postponing my appointment for a different day-my appointment was confirmed to the new appointment day which was awesome. My left foot, left knee, and my left leg were actively pinging me with sharp, stabbing pains ever since the accident; the mani/pedi was alright not causing more inflicted pains which was a sigh of relief. Sue colored, gave a hair treatment, styled my hair, and she also waxed my eyebrows, lip, and chin. Overall, I expected paying about $175.00; however, to my utter dismay, the final, total bill was $230.00! WOT???? I had $200.00 inside my wallet, Sue doesn't accept credit cards; despite, the fact I was in that horrific, taxi accident, Sue demanded I run down the hill to the bank and get $30.00 more for paying the entire bill! Upon returning to the hair studio . . . BTW AND FYI: My new Pacsafe backpack and my designer sweater, Michael Kors were kept as hostages until I returned: I find this business practice archaic and unorthodox but, alright, Sue-she knew fully well my left leg, knee, and foot were in excruciating amount of pain and now, my entire left leg is undergoing an exacerbated amount of relentless pinging going down and up the hill R/T to the bank! Regardless, I submitted $240.00 to Sue but, I didn't receive my change returned so, I can submit a proper tip but, the change from $240.00 nor the billing receipt appeared. Oh, well-I guess if, you're happy with charging $230.00 and receiving a $10.00 tip, Sue~it's acceptable by me but, know fully well-receiving $10.00 IS low tip standards: Actually, the normal tip would be $46.00 IF THE BILL for hair salon services rendered really was $230.00; however and since, Sue never gave me a billing receipt totaling the services rendered which as any business practice is egregiously unacceptable and as a customer not knowing the new updated costs, it's only fair showing what each service costs would be considered as an ethical, business practice: Thus, one star docked for not submitting a receipt for services rendered. My husband goes here to get his haircut. I tried it out since I was looking for a decent stylist. She cut my hair too short. Also the wait (I went on a weekday on my lunch break) was a bit much. She is a one person operation so what can ya do? One thing I don't like, she has this helper who "checks you out" while you're getting your hair cut. That gave me the creeps! read more

I came in for a cut and color at noon, there were no other customers in the salon so I was seated right away. However, Sue was eating her lunch and took her time before getting started on my hair, which I was rather put off by since I asked for an appointment specifically at 12. For the haircut I only asked for a trim and a bit of layering because I wanted a lighter feel to my hair, and Sue managed to cut off 2-3 inches off, so I was pretty upset with the length. When it was time for coloring, I told Sue that I wanted a chestnut brown color, and showed her some pictures of the hair color. I ended up with barely any brown and it was nothing like what I wanted. During the coloring process she pulled and tugged on my hair so much that I ended up with a massive headache, she also yanked at my hair during the cut. She didn't use any foil or even a bag to keep the heat in my hair. When it was time to pay, I was expecting to owe about $50 since the board specifically said $15 for haircuts and $35 for color, I did think this was super cheap for a cut and color but it was Chinatown after all. I even read every yelp review and each one only mentioned $15 cuts. What I ended up owing was $120, $40 for the cut and $80 for color, because I had "long hair" (it was barely past my shoulders). Neither of these prices were listed on their board, nor on Yelp. Moreover, they didn't mention beforehand that they did not accept card, so I had to go down to the bank and receive cash. Overall not a pleasant experience, I would not recommend this place if you want a decent color treatment and hate walking up steep hills. read more

I love SUE! She has been cutting my hair, ever since I was a kid. I only trust her when it comes to coloring and cutting off a drastic amount. From what I remember as a child, Sue used to work at a hair salon further down Clay. I lost contact with her since then until I drove passed Clay/Powell and finally realized Sue opened her own hair salon. We haven't seen each other for about five years?! I was so excited to reunite with Sue, so she can save my frizzy hair. I've tested out many hair salons before I found Sue's Hair Studio and can honestly say,. she keeps me coming back. They do coloring, hot oil treatments, streaks, up do's. hair setting,. and also a section for nails pedicures/manicures. The salon is clean and they keep it hairy free. Every time I cut my hair, someone sweeps em away before I know it. I love how patient Sue is when she cuts my hair. When I say 1 inch,. she only really cuts 1inch,. unlike MOST places. After the cut, she will blow the excess hair off my shoulders and make sure no hair is stuck around my face. She knows that I don't like feeling *itchy* after! I am always satisfied with the cut and I visit Sue every two months for a trim. She is very personable and honest. Trust her opinion, she has STYLE! I was pretty happy to find out they were open late on a Sunday, even on Labor Day weekend. I didn't need anything fancy, just a 2 on the sides and short on the top, and the woman did a careful, good job. I wished she had gone shorter on the top, as I had specified, but overall I'm happy. Also, some places tend to be a little rough, especially if you're not paying a ton, but she was very gentle and took her time. I was in and out in 15 minutes total, which was another plus. It was a $15 haircut which is a little bit pricey for a guy's haircut in China town, but I think the extra few bucks was worth it. read more

THIS IS A REVIEW FOR ELSA (NAILS) and not the salon generally. Every Nob Hill woman should have a trusted nail technician in her life who know exactly what she likes and who can step up to the plate on short noticed nail emergencies. Elsa is just that. She pretty much runs her own business within Sue's and works with both walk ins and appointments. She does a very detailed job at both scrubbing off those rough edges on my heels and manicures. She also has a wide variety of GEL POLISH. She works quickly and efficiently and never keeps me waiting if I have an appointment. The best part is that SHE IS AFFORDABLE, far cheaper then any other nail salon, especially for NOB HILL. She is very personable and I always look forward to going into see her so I can chat her ear off while she does my nails. Her french manicures are always even and makes my hands look beautiful! I'm bummed because I moved and Chinatown isn't as close nor convenient as it used to be. So it's been 7 years (7!) since my last review of Sue's Hair Studio. She continues to give solid haircuts at a great price. Elsa is the best manicurist in the world. I go in and for $40 I get a great haircut and world-class manicure (that's including tip). They are friendly and direct - the whole team is like family. If you need a chic place, this isn't for you. This is great value, great people, and excellent service...but don't expect a sparkling wine with your haircut ;-) read more

Get cash out before going in, because they don't take credit/debit cards (I had to run to the nearest ATM). Otherwise, great experience! I was able to get in early on a Sunday morning without an appointment. Total cost for wash, cut, blow dry and straighten was $40. read more

I came to straighten and highlight my hair after cutting my hair for the first time. I really don't recommend straighten and highlight and highly doubt the quality of their products. My hair came off a lot each time I washed it for 3 weeks. It drives me crazy because I never came across such situation even I was under high pressure. This was my second time scheduled to go. First time was ok and Sue was nice. Yesterday I set appointment for today. Called again today to confirm time. Showed up 2 minutes early as she took another customer and told a walk in 30 minutes he will be seen. So doing the math that leaves me with a 10-15 minute haircut including shampoo. I think Sue is great. I go @ 8am in the morning on a weekday. NO WAIT - $10 haircut (not including tip) I always wash my hair before I go, because the other lady has hurt me in the past. We talk about food, shopping, music, travel, work, our homes, her dog that I know will grow to love me :) She even asks me about my partner. My hair cut is so simple (short on the sides and back - blend and trim the top) - We don't even have to clarify anymore. Just walked in on an early Sunday morning and Sue didn't hesitated to do a rollerset for me which lasts for at least a full day. She was quick setting the rollers and then i disappeared under the hood for 40min. The curls did turn out beautiful and and je just finished the styling. Atmosphere is nice and friendly. read more

I used to dread having my hair shampooed at a salon because it was always so uncomfortable! It felt like they were digging claws into my head or sometimes it's like they were trying to pull my hair out and sometimes they were so in a hurry that I don't think they washed my hair properly! But thankfully at Sue's salon I enjoyed the process so much I think I fell asleep at some point! The lady took her time , washed and rinsed my hair and scalp properly and she also massaged it with just enough pressure---it was awesome! just the way I like it! Another thing: At other places, even if I show the stylist a photo of the haircut I want it never looks the same or she chops off waaaayyy too much, but here, it was exactly how I wanted it! Best value in town. Elsa gives a great pedicure and the price is right. I have watched Sue style/cut hair for years as I sat with Elsa working her magic. I was recently in getting a pedicure before a trip to Hawaii. As I watched yet another great hair cut by Sue, I decided to take a chance and ask for a trim. She got me in right then and there - and sent me off on vacation with a cut that rivaled any chic expensive stylist results that I have experienced in the past. Sue and Elsa are a real find. Elsa does a great pedicure and gets you in and out without a lot of fanfare. As I sat for my pedicure with Elsa, I watched Sue style hair and do color for years before I was brave enough to give this little salon a go. I have been extremely pleased with the precision haircuts and color treatments this experienced efficient stylist performs - and for very reasonable prices. Sue has helped me transition from "all over color" and root touch up every 3-4 weeks, to a more manageable natural blend of my gray with some blonde highlights to brighten up my "do". Many of the women in my building have moved their business to this small neighborhood salon after asking me where I get my hair cut. Fabulous value for sure. read more
