Many thanks to Dr. Aden Lessiak for her ability to deal with my tempestuous kitty; I really didn't think a thorough exam would be possible, what with Lili's growling and swatting. Not only was Dr. Lessiak able to check Lili out, but she also was able to take some blood (at my request) to ensure Lili was as okay on the inside as she was on the out. She is! We appreciated Dr. Lessiak's calm demeanor and soft-spoken manner, and that she listens intently to owner and pet. It was my first visit to Suffern animal hospital. My dog was greeted by the Vet tech Melody who was loving and sweet to my Sadie. She listened to all my concerns as she was petting and getting to know my pet. Dr. Aden examined my dog thoroughly while genuinely giving her loving attention. Ever since Dr. French left this office has been going down hill. The receptionist there thinks she's a Veterinarian. Gave me medical advice and had me rush my dog to the Emergency Vet. My husband and I have been going to this place regularly with our three dogs since moving to the area. We decided after our last interaction we will not be returning. We brought our dog, a regular patient there, in after a night of being very sick and was immediately turned away because they were too busy and was told "well you know we close at 2pm today." Mind you it was 9am, they had literally just opened their doors. They should strongly consider taking "hospital" out of their practice. That was the last straw but they have a history of high prices and they have a propensity for over prescribing medication. The front desk staff were rude and dismissive. We had updated contact information multiple times for them to continue to call wrong numbers and leave rude voice messages. Strongly urge pet owners to avoid this business. read more

Overall, I've had very nice experiences with Suffern Animal Hospital. We have been taking our lab shepherd to Dr. Sakolsky for three years now -- and it's a great comfort (and pleasure) to visit with a veterinarian who genuinely loves animals. She is always so loving with our dog, clearly explains costs to me ahead of time, and is very down to earth about what is and isn't necessary (vs. other vets who keep telling you you need x, y, z just to make more money). As a specific example, two years ago an X-ray showed our dog had a partial tear to her ACL. Dr. S said surgery would fix it, and quoted $5,000. Based on our dog's behavior, I believed she could be rehabbed at home with rest and anti inflammatory meds. Dr. S didn't push or guilt me about the surgery and agreed it was definitely worth a shot to try rest and meds. And it worked! We saved a bundle and spared our girl an ultimately unnecessary surgery. But what I appreciated most was that I got an honest opinion and not a guilt trip to get more money. I recommend Dr. Sakolsky 10/10. read more

Dr LeBeau showed lack of knowledge and complete lack of caring for my dog which was in an emergency situation which could have resulted in her becoming seriously ill or even death, and no I'm not being dramatic she sent her home with a 4inch gapping hole in her abdomen bc she prematurely removed sutures saying it would heal from the inside out?! What? thankfully I had more common sense then the vet and knew this was not OK an emergency situation and got her Blu Pearl Emergency Hospital immediately, they confirmed negligent care and her lack of knowledge to a emergency situation, performed Emergency surgery to close her up, a complete nightmare. They are only after your wallet. AVOID! read more

We've been going to this hospital for many years with every pet we've owned. I'm not so familiar with the new doctors since Dr. French retired, but after my last experience I would never return with any animal. Our dog started experiencing symptoms of a possible UTI or stone, so we brought him in for x rays. After the exam they told us it appeared he did in fact have stones, and needed surgery to remove them. They stated they could perform the surgery, but if any issues arose during the procedure he would need to be taken to a larger surgical hospital. We decided to go to a different hospital in order to avoid any complications from the start. First of all, the hospital we chose for the surgery had to repeat their own x rays because the doctor told us the positioning wasn't really correct, and it was hard to use the ones from Suffern to properly diagnose. After taking their own x rays, the second hospital was pretty convinced that our dog had cancer and not stones, and after additional testing this was confirmed. Suffern was ready to perform surgery to remove stones on a dog that didn't even have any! Surgery wasn't even an option in our dog's case, unfortunately. I was so disturbed by the misdiagnoses, and so relieved that I brought him to a different hospital for his "surgery." I can't imagine what would have happened if we had given the go ahead to perform the surgery at Suffern. I've heard mixed reviews about this hospital over the years, but now I'd certainly never recommend them to anyone after this ordeal. read more

Dr Jason from Suffren Animal Hospital is kind, loving and most importantly, compassionate with my dogs especially Koani. This is my story - Konai today is an 8-year old pug who suffers from terrible allergies. We did allergy testing and it's more of a question of what she is not allergic too. To help her get off of steroids we tried allergy shots - she was on her second vile and second shot. Well she went into anaphylactic shock. They don't give Epi pens for animals - well they should but that is another story . I rushed her late on a Friday to Suffren Animal Hospital where we have been going since she is a puppy seeing Dr French. By the time we arrived I was not sure Koani was going to make it. I had called ahead and all in the office were ready for her - As Dr Jason told me afterwards she arrived with non sustaining blood pressure. The office staff was great at doing the intake to give Dr Jason the information she needed to save Koani. The whole team worked late to save her!! I am most grateful to all for saving her life!!!! Fast forward 2 years later Koani gets Bladder stones - Dr Jason suggested surgery because she had many stones and large ones. I wanted to try the diet and have them dissolve. Dr Jason totally supported my decision. Well the diet worked except on a Sunday I notice Koani could not urinate. I went to a local emergency vet ER. A stone did get smaller except now it was stuck in her unitary tract. I texted Dr Jason when I arrived at the vet ER and in less than one minute she responded. Remember this is a Sunday! Thank heavens because the ER did not have the staff to treat her. Dr Jason told me to go to Blue Pearl Emergency in Northern NJ. Thank heavens because they were able to take her and assist her that night and she had surgery the following morning. Dr Jason had no selfish advice - only pure compassion for what was best for Koani. Now had I taken her advice and did the surgery Konai would not have gone through this trauma. I want to update my review and say that I had a much better experience when I recently went in because my puppy was sick with diarrhea. The office was very accommodating in scheduling an appt for me last min and had quick turn around for the stool sample result. The Vet knew what was wrong with my puppy and gave me good direction, along with medication and probiotics that helped care for her digestive issues. Do not go here. Receptionist staff is extremely customer unfriendly.Awful experience today at Suffern Animal Hospital. Been a customer there for over 10 years for both my cat and dog. Had an appointment at 3:30 for some vaccinations for my little Chihuahua. She suffers from extreme car anxiety (one time her anxiety was so high she ran a fever and needed to be put under a fan)so I have to administer a sedative 2 hours prior but is still nervous nonetheless. There was extreme traffic clogging all roads heading towards Suffern. Route 17, Ramapo Valley, Franklin Turnpike into Orange Turnpike. I was 20 minutes late. I walk in with my hyperventilating dog. The receptionist tells me their policy for being late 10 minutes or longer is that I have to reschedule. I told her my dog suffers from anxiety and I would like to get this over with. I offered to wait. She robotically restated the policy and said she has an opening Monday. I asked for the vet who was off. Then I asked if she would prefer I take my business elsewhere or allow me to wait. At that point she started to print my dogs records and cats records without blinking an eye, no further conversation and handed them to me. I suppose they do not want my business. I do not recommend this business. If I was the owner/ vet I would fire this lady immediately. She has no business dealing directly with customers. I was in customer service for 35 years, she needs to find another job. read more

I was devastated to have to make the decision to put my beloved cat to sleep last week. I brought her to Suffern Animal Hospital as this is where my family has been going for decades. I cannot thank the staff enough, and especially Dr. Kennedy, for the sincere compassion they showed to me from the moment I walked in. Dr French and Dr Jason take great care of our cats. This week our beloved 17 year old cat became very ill. Fitting us in on very short notice, Dr Jason immediately narrowed down the possibilities and ran in-house bloodtests for a definitive diagnosis within an hour of our first call to them. Unfortunately, he was too far along (kidneys failing) and we had to make the difficult decision to let him go. Throughout our visit, Dr Jason and the whole staff were kind, caring and considerate. They offered us time to be alone with our cat to say goodbye, and were completely professional and supportive through this hardest time to be a responsible pet parent. read more

Dear Pet Parents, Friends & Lovers. If you have a sick and very ill pet loved one, I encourage you to NOT bring them to this place and to bring them somewhere else that can help them. Suffern Animal Hospital is not the place they claim to be nor will they help your pet. All they have on their mind is $$$ unfortunately, not saving or caring for your pet. This week, we had no choice but to put our 10 year old German Pointer to sleep because Dr. Jason misdiagnosing him with "Pneumonia" and giving him unnecessary medication instead of treating him for "HEART FAILURE". Anyways, we made an appt. to bring him in, first off the lady who answered the phone seemed like she had no idea what she was saying or doing. We brought him in last week or so because our poor big guy was having trouble breathing and had a hacking cough which seemed to sound like there may be something stuck in his throat. He has been in absolute distress for awhile and we couldn't figure out what was going on with him. Instead of thoroughly diagnosing him and giving him the proper testing he needs like an "X-ray, bloodwork, and listening to his lungs & heart" she went ahead and said he had an "upper respiratory infection" and just prescribed him medication.. As someone who works in the medical field FOR HUMANS, if a patient came to me saying that they were unable to breathe correctly and had a hacking sound in the throat or so, I would first go ahead and listen to their lungs and would do an X-ray ASAP. NOT give them medication and have them be off their way. That's basically what she did for us. Anyways, a week later passed and he was still not feeling any better and we noticed that his coughing was getting worse. We called and said that the cough has gotten worse, and instead of asking us to come in so we can do an X-ray and see whats going on inside; she prescribed us more medication that was absolutely unnecessary, and of course that cost us a lot of $$$. She said if doesn't get any better to come in that Friday of that week... and so we did. Friday, Sept 29 we come in to finally demand an x-ray to see what is actually going on with him because we knew it wasn't "an upper respiratory infection" it was something else and to our worst experience; our poor big guy with all the fighting he has done finally collapsed in front of their office and wasn't able to get up anymore. My boyfriend and the vet techs had to carry him inside because he had no longer any strength to get up. While waiting in the waiting room for nearly an hour with no news of whats going on one of the vet techs comes out to let us know that he is on a breathing tube and is sedated. Our poor big guy wasn't breathing on his own correctly anymore but he was stable. Finally, Dr. Jason comes out to let us know that they are FINALLY GOING TO DO AN X-RAY WHICH SHE SHOULD'VE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Waiting another 20min we find out he either had heart failure or cancer. But in the end, it turned out to be heart failure. They take him the whole day to try and drain out the fluids in him. Yes, they were successful but the worst news had to come at the end of the day. They said he would have needed to go to a cardiologist for doggies in Paramus to get even better help but unfortunately the cost was too high for us. It's all about $$$ with these people. They were asking for 7 grand from us to save him..which is absolutely disgusting. If we knew in the beginning and if she had given him an x-ray and not misdiagnosed him when we first brought him in with the incident, I believe we could've saved our poor Chicho. We could've brought him to the PROPER VETS he needed to go to instead of ending up at this place with Dr. Jason's poor choices and horrible diagnoses. She had no sympathy for us, there as no remorse of comfort of any type when we found all this out. She didn't have the nerve to say "sorry" instead she said whether we would've found out before then or now, this would've been the situation at hand and some bs to cover her asss. So disgusted of this place. I was in the back with my son, with our beloved Chicho on the testing table; trying to let him know I was there with him and we all loved him while he was unconscious, while my family was trying to talk it out and see what the best thing to do to end his painful suffering. This lady, comes in and was basically ready to euthanized my poor buddy without all my family members being present. She had the nerve to talk about prices and all before putting my poor sweet guy to sleep when she knew all of us was grieving. The vet techs and assistants were more caring then her. So disgusting. Our pointer was finally put to sleep and had no choice but to enter doggie heaven. We had no idea that Friday was going to be the last day that our gentle, caring, and lovable pup was going to be on this earth for the last time. We had been taking out dogs here for years but when our blind dog developed a problem on 1 of his eyes French completely misdiagnosed it as an infection & kept selling us more & more antibiotics. He also claimed that our dog was not in any pain even though he cried. When the problem didn't clear up he said the eye had to be removed & that would cost $850! I've never had a vet or dr. quote a price before. We took our dog to a vet Ophthalmologist who said it was a PAINFUL cyst, removed it in 5 minutes under a local, gave us pain killers, antibiotics b/c of the procedure, & meds to prevent our dog's cataracts from doing further damage - something French NEVER mentioned. This is tragic for me. I went there with my dogs and cats for almost 29 years. Dr French was the most competent caring Veterinarian there was. I miss his demeanor and wisdom. The current owners will hopefully be gone soon and a new group of better Vets will hopefully take over. The person who I talked to was uncaring, arrogant and downright nasty. I told them I'm leaving and they emailed my current dogs medical records and the first comment on the first page was about my phone call with erroneous information that I allegedly said to their incompetent employee. I called for an appointment because my pet was sick. They told me they had no appointments that day, I called in the am. I asked if they could squeeze me in. My pet was very ill and needed medicine. Dr Kayla Sakolsky at Dr French Animal Hospital in Suffern, NY shortened my Chihuahua's life. An x-ray performed by an inexperienced and unsupervised tech in this office left my 6 lb Chihuahua gasping for air as his lungs filled with fluid. On his way to a heart attack the wrong medication was prescribed. Rushed to the hospital where the cardiologist confirmed that this was a sudden rupture, due to trauma. Chordate trendiness of anterior leaflet followed by severe mitral regurgitation. Hospital stay saved his life for now . Due to this prognosis the cardiologist explained that four medications given daily will keep my Chihuahua alive for one to two years leaving our family devastated as our dog Bambino deteriorates. read more

I found this so incredulous that I asked the girl to please check with Doctor French since I have been a customer of his business for over 50 years and his answer was the same. it would be between 300 and $500 possibly more post. Dr. French is AMAZING. He doesn't try to rip you off with selling your pet stuff unnecessary tricks, techniques and procedures. The man is honest, knowledgeable, down to earth, and apparently a good painter because he painted some cat painting in one of the offices. My issue isn't with the FANTASTIC Dr. French; however, the HORRIBLE staff here. The staff are apathetic, rude, unfriendly and just unhappy to be around animals. If you dislike animals and people so much, why dear soul - do you bother to work at an animal hospital? This place used to be amazing 6 years ago, but the service has gotten progressively worse and worse. On one of the more recent visits, we were greeted by one of the nurses with 'we don't take american express here, JUST SO YOU KNOW', even before our pet was treated. Okay, the pet hasn't been treated to the emergency procedure and somehow you're already asking for our payment. Thank you for the kind customer service. Another thing, why are the staff so much kinder to the New City/Chappaqua Lexus driving mean girl moms? Dr. French is the only redeeming quality of this place. On three occasions my pet was unable to meet with Dr. French and the other doctors were clinical, dismissive and rude. Again, if you don't like animals, why are you a veterinarian. And if you prefer only rich Lexus driving moms from MEAN GIRLS why are you running an animal hospital in Suffern? I think another veterinarian establishment in Rockland with kinder practiced doctors and a staff that might actually like animals and humans (a little bit), might be good. read more

We just love Dr Jason who came highly recommended to us by so many people in the community. Our former vet retired and we were so happy to find her. She is compassionate, intelligent, thorough, and works to try and help minimize difficult costs which are just that way no matter where you go. Dr. Jason's caring for our pets shows us that she understands they are family members; always following up and never too busy to return a phone call. Dr. French has also been wonderful for us. I went in October of 2013, because my dog Jake was tired and limping- I thought that maybe he broke his leg. Immediately when I walked in the door the receptionist said - he tore his ACL - here let me get you paperwork on it. I told her that I would like to have him see a doctor first before committing to a 3,000- 5,000 surgery. First ISSUE: I haven't even seen a doctor yet- how is the receptionist able to diagnose my dog? I went in to see Dr. KARKHECK who's spent less then 45 seconds in the room looks at him and said he tore his ACL and she recommended surgery- had the paperwork in her hand quoted, me a price and told me that if I cared about my dog I would take care of him this way. In less then 1 minute she was in and out of the room. I told her that I didn't feel comfortable with out doing blood work and seeing if there was some thing else. She said ok and gave me a prescription for some pain meds. Second Issue: Why is the patient's owner suggesting blood work and you are refusing to do so? Third Issue: I didn't realize your time was that valuable that it couldn't be wasted by spending more then a minute with us. After the visit, Jake regained his energy- I decided to not give him the pain medicine she gave him- something in my gut told me not to. Flash forward a few months, Jake was fine for a few months- seemed better then he normally was. Then the same thing happened again. My fiance decided to take him back to the Suffern Animal hospital and He saw Dr. FRENCH. Dr. French's prescribed him an antibiotic- with the wrong dosage and it almost killed him. He also did not offer any blood work but offered to have Jake do an X- ray that would cost us $500.00 - quoted my fiance right then and there. My fiance only took the medicine and said that we would discuss it together and see if the medicine helped. Jake got increasingly worse. I tried to call to speak with Dr. French however his receptionist told me he was with someone- which is fine I'm sure he is busy but when I told them it was an emergency- they offered no assistance. They never forwarded my information on. I called 7 times between 9 and 3 pm before actually getting Dr. French on the phone. He lied to me on the phone about the diagnosis told me that he suggested blood work - I knew he was lying because he changed his story & forgot my dog's name called him something else completely. He then told me that the medicine he gave was never clinically tested on dogs so he himself wasn't sure of a good amount to give him. I couldn't believe what I just had heard and was in complete shock - he offered to come back in and he would see Jake right away. I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. I brought Jake to another animal hospital in the area- they took two hours asking more questions then I could ever imagine and found that Jake simply has Lyme disease. The test results came in this morning. He has Chronic Lyme disease so if the Doctors at Suffern Animal hospital asked any questions at all they would of figured this out. From the front desk to the doctors- they are horrible. read more

I really do wish I could give more stars, but there are a few people at that hospital that unfortunately made we switch veterinary care. Dr. French and Dr. Parker are wonderful, amazing, good doctors. I love them both and have never had a problem with their demeanor or medicine practice. I have not had the (probable pleasure) of meeting the third doctor. Unfortunately, the other staff make it a putrid experience. I guess they cleaned house for whatever reason, because I went in during the holidays, and a few months later I could only recognize one or two faces. One was a staff member who was been there for years, who is always running around being amazingly helpful and trying to get everyone taken care of. The others, I did not know their names or faces, were okay. They just didn't seem like they knew anything, from the phone to basic medicine (sorry, you work at an animal hospital, why can't you explain the new heartworm medication? Maybe I'm crazy.) And then there was the office manager. I have never spoken to a more rude, arrogant, entitled little girl in my entire life. I cannot say enough horrible things about this human being. I simply asked to speak with her about a double charge (by the way, it ended up being an accident, no big deal) on my bill. She INSISTED that I bought two of this, I must have, we don't make these mistakes, with a horrible attitude. Then when the person who made the mistake said "whoops, sorry," she walked away, without an apology for her nastiness, and PICKED UP HER PHONE, off to laugh with another co-worker. Not to mention, any time I've ever gotten her when I call in, her voice is dripping with displeasure. I can't even go on with the other terrible exchanges I've had with her. Dear Suffern Animal Hospital office manager, you better fix yourself, because I know for a fact that I'm not the only one that left because of you. My family used to go to this animal hospital a few years ago and brought our 2 cats. One of my cats, who had recently diagnosed diabetes, was refusing to eat or drink and was brought in for treatment. He was examined by Dr. Jason, who was all smiles and talked about how this is common in diabetic cats, he'll be fine, etc. He was admitted and planned to stay over for at least 2 nights to have tests run and such. We later got a call from an apathetic receptionist 2 days later saying that his health was critical and that the vet recommended we put him to sleep. We were taken aback to say the least and rushed to collect him, to find that he was severely dehydrated and appeared to be neglect of any type of treatment. We then had him admitted to another animal hospital, where we were told that he had received no care for his condition and it had advanced to ketoacidosis, which ended with us having to put our beloved cat to sleep.
