While exploring Harlem, we had to stop by Sugar Hill Creamery for something cold, creamy, and delicious--and I'm so glad we did! The first thing that caught my attention wasn't even the ice cream... it was the names. This isn't your average ice cream shop with "vanilla," "chocolate," and "strawberry." Their flavors have personality! Names like I Live It, How I Get It, Brown Bombshell, and Andy Griffith (their take on classic vanilla) immediately made me smile. It's such a fun, creative touch that fits the neighborhood perfectly. According to the website, their flavors are inspired by Harlem, local culture, and favorite desserts, which makes the experience feel even more unique. The ice cream absolutely lived up to the recommendation. Rich, creamy, flavorful, and worth the stop. Even with a steady flow of customers, the staff kept the line moving, stayed friendly, and made everyone feel welcome. The only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score is the size of the shop. It's tiny! Of course, that's not really their fault, but it can feel a little cramped when it's busy. Overall, Sugar Hill Creamery is a must-visit if you're in Harlem. My hubby and I stopped in with our little one after getting brunch a few minutes away. It wasn't busy at the time which was great because we were able to enjoy our sweet treat inside. Upon entering, we were greeted by staff. The space is cozy and cute. Lots of calm colors adorn the wall along with beautiful paintings of African American figures. I've been to this location many years ago and I assumed some flavors would be available but I didn't know they switch up thru the seasons. This wasn't a big deal to me as I found it refreshing and an opportunity to see what else they offer. My hubby is a true lover of ice cream and treats it like an experience, so he wanted a sample of everything and the staff were kind in serving him. I decided on the vanilla bean and honey lavender. Both really great! The honey Lavendar is expecially unconventional to me but works well! The Lavendar note hits the back of your taste buds but it isn't strong or overpowering, instead the honey lends sweetness to balance everything out. The vanilla bean was standard but nice as well. Both had a nice mouth feel - they were smooth, creamy, and rich. Nothing like haagen daaz but just right. In terms of pricing, I had a double scoop which came up to $7.75 (before tax). I felt like that was fair for the amount received and type of business. Service was good and the staff were helpful. Finally, the establishment was clean all around, including the bathroom. Visited on a recent trip to NYC. Really glad to see that Sugar Hill Creamery not only survived the pandemic but is thriving! Service was quick despite a long line and the workers were kind and pleasant. We tried Sweet Socialism, which was surprisingly complex for a flavor only labeled as "dark chocolate," and Hello New World, which was cookies and caramel -- a simple but genius twist on the classic cookies and cream. Not my first visit here, but my first review of the place. Really nice young workers who provide good service, to help you decide on what flavors you want to have. I enjoyed the samples I received and decided to get a scoop of the Brown Bombshell and the Tuma Buna. I later found the Tuma Buna, although very good with the ginger and what tastes like a honeycomb crisp, I would just prefer them to make just the coffee version of this. I've had plenty of coffee ice cream and milkshakes, smoothies etc. It's one of my favorite bases, with that being said they had the best coffee flavor ice cream hands down I ever had. I really need them to just make this one alone. The Brown Bombshell was good, very rich flavors. The serving size of the ice cream was a bit on the smaller side, but I didn't mind because my wallet loved the prices of this place. Sugar Hill Creamery never disappoints, and this is from someone who makes ice cream a major food group in their diet. The flavors are classic and comforting- yet they still manage to have unique flavor profiles that you can't necessarily find out in the wild. On my last trip I paired I Live It, How I Get It (summer menu) with Gran Gran's Banana Pudding (spring menu- maybe didn't run out yet). Works of art. You can taste the freshness and intentionality in each bite. The creamery itself is small, but clean and visually appealing with beautiful art adorning the walls. My friend, her husband and I ended up here kind of by accident, and I'm so glad we did. We went out to eat, and my friend wanted chocolate ice cream for dessert but the restaurant ran out. We walked a couple blocks and found Sugar Hill Creamery open late, around 10:30 pm. I ordered cookies and cream with caramel, which was delicious, and my friend got a double scoop of chocolate (her favorite). She loved it. Her husband didn't get ice cream, but he was fine with the free water they had set up. The three of us sat and talked until closing. Used to be my favorite ice cream on the island. But they lost my business today. For years they have served a premium product. Today, something has changed. Two different flavors ordered (by two of us) and both tasted like cheap grocery store brands. There was a distinct taste of guar gum in both flavors. Affected the taste and the mouth feel and left a residue in the mouth I could wait to get home and rinse out. I'll pay a premium price for a premium product - but we were both terribly disappointed today. There are thoughtful parts of this establishment such as kids books, a chalk board with chalk provided and free water with little cups however the music being played wasn't very kid friendly. This place really reminded me of those small ice creameries in secondary cities like St. Louis and Detroit that have so many fun and unique flavors. They also give you a huge scoop which is great! I ordered the Cafe Touba which has a base of Senegalese Coffee with Peanut Brittle, Cardamom, and Selim Pepper Brownies mixed into it. I don't know why, but it has a very strong ginger flavor to it which I enjoyed. Each bite was so interesting as you get all these delicious flavoring combinations elevating the essentially coffee ice cream you just ordered. All of the flavors are good, and there's a good balance between inventive ones and classics. You can try a few before making your decision. My favorite flavors are the blueberry cheesecake, peach cobbler, honey lavender, and coffee-brownie. To sweeten the deal (heh), the staff are super nice and absolute pros at scooping beautifully round balls of ice cream.
