We arrived here late morning and found it slammed here. This is always a sign of a good spot. We waited a not too bad 25 minutes, but were seated at the large table in the window with another couple and their baby. Super awkward experience sitting with people you don't know when you were looking forward to a private breakfast as a family. But what made matters worse - even though we ordered immediately after the other party did, somehow their food arrived 14 minutes before ours did, and we were - all while very hungry - forced to watch them eat their food. Smelling and seeing how good everything looked. It only made us hungrier and even more impatient. I'm sure it was also awkward for the other family seeing us unable to stop sneaking a look at their plates. Just weird. After all this, the food was only okay. I wouldn't even give it a 'good' rating. Almond Joy pancakes were dry. The omelette special with fig, Brie, and linguisa was tasty in some bites, stomach turning in others. I did have a cheddar biscuit that was out of this world good. I'll probably give them another try, though - because the menu was unique and there is a huge lack of breakfast places that'll serve anything beyond your standard eggs and bacon. read more

Went here for a friends birthday brunch. The place was extremely busy which is understandable considering it was a beautiful Sunday morning. The wait was around 45 minutes but we did not mind. We got seated and were asked what we wanted to drink. 15 minutes go by and the waitress asks us what we want to drink AGAIN and then takes our food order. Another 25 minutes goes by STILL no drinks and our food comes and then we are asked to order drinks once again. Unacceptable service. The food however was phenomenal and that's why I am leaving a 3 star rating. Once we were done with food we were going to order another round of drinks but were given the check and rushed out of there. I adore Sugar Magnolias! My friends and I have been regular customers for several years now and I can honestly say we've never left disappointed. The food is consistently delicious - it is well made with great ingredients instead of being gimmicky. It's also very inexpensive for the quality you're getting. The service is friendly, personable, and attentive. They always humor my special requests (a Benedict without eggs?). As Anna B. mentioned, if you want to get in for breakfast on Sunday you might have a bit of a wait, but that's hit or miss. That could also be because when my friends and I go, it's usually towards the end of their day and when everyone is trying to get in for last-minute breakfast. Disappointed. Tried the Fattoush salad twice and both times found it lacking and not lemony or authentic. The vinegar used had a definite odd overwhelming fishy flavor. No tomatoes, sparse cucumbers, not many pita chips, no mint or lemon taste. You can't find this wonderful yet simple to make salad on the north shore, and you won't find it here. Service lacking too. Thus a capacity for more than one variety of eggs benedict is recommended*. From a non-blind sample of three dishes, I found a statistically significant trend for delicosocity. Levels were such that the 20-minute wait for a table was instantly forgotten. I tried: - Crabcake bene. Extremely rich crab cake, runny poached egg and tonnes of hollandaise on an English muffin. I think I would have struggled to eat both servings. Though it would have been a happy struggle. - "Irish" bene. The usual egg'n'hollandaise on corn-beef hash and cornbread. Fantastic, as were the slightly spicy homefries. - French toast. I was past capacity by this point, so may not be able to fairly critique the quality. It was sweet. It wasn't the cheapest brunch I've had ($30 for two of us, with coffee), but I didn't need to eat again for a week, so it's clearly good value. *Portions are large, so this is best achieved by swapping out with someone else. BUT it takes tooooo long to get the food. Come on, 25 minutes to get a seat, and then we have to wait another 25 to 30 minutes to get pancakes? Really? I thought it was a fluke the first few times, but this last time the waitress (who mostly stay in the kitchen hiding) said "Yeah, it does take awhile to get the food." It is so good, but next time? Unique presentation that lacked any real taste. I had the Irish Benedict and a side of Linguisa Sausage. The linguisa really was outstanding - cut in half and grilled nicely. The Irish Benny had 2 grilled slices of a corn bread loaf which was flavorful and sweet. I was expecting it under the home made hash (which had carrot shavings in it), poached eggs (under done) and Hollandaise sauce (cold but flavorful). The potatoes were warm and a nice companion to the breakfast. Others had the steak and eggs (the steak looked perfectly cooked), carrot cake pancakes which they loved and I tasted and didn't think much of after all the build-up, Georgia's Toast (graham coated, marshmallow and chocolate stuffed French toast) which everyone but me tried and said was great (note: syrup not needed) and the Goatie Omelet which was a big hit even with its contents spread unevenly through the omelet. The food is good, but the wait time is ridiculous. We had a party of 4 and put our name in a little after 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning and were told it would be 30-40 minutes. Went in to check after waiting 1 hour and were told it would likely be another 20 minutes. We were not seated until after 11:45 a.m. and didn't get any food until well after 12:30 p.m. The prices are a little steep, the space is funky but cramped and considering the menu is breakfast food I would anticipate that the wait time after ordering would be a LOT faster to help turn tables. read more

Delicious! So many amazing breakfast options it was difficult to choose. My daughter and I shared the almond joy pancakes (which were not nearly as sweet and heavy as one might think) and the Wingaersheek omelette which is filled with incredible arugula pesto. We believed them to be the perfect combination of savory and sweet breakfast, but could have picked from any number of unique breakfast dishes. It was pretty packed out on Sunday morning and we appeared to have just beaten the rush by arriving at 9:30 and only waiting about 10 minutes for our table. The only reason I didn't go the 5 star route is due to the noise level. This is probably just personal preference on my part as the noise is only generated by lots of serving activity and great conversations. Arrived at about10:30 on a Saturday morning, had only a ten minute wait. We loved this place. It's cozy, the food is 5 star, and the staff were adorable. I ordered the Georgia's french toast and bacon eggs home fries and toast. There was so much food that we were offered a take away container. My friend ordered the eggs Benedict which was served with the lightest fluffiest hash and served over fresh grilled scratch made cornbread. She ask orders a side of carrot cake sand dollar pancakes. I don't even like carrot cake and these were the most delicious things I've ever tried to steal from a fellow diner. Insanity. Fantastic food. Friendly waitstaff. We had an amazing experience here today for mothers day. We didn't end up having an awful wait, even though we anticipated it being a long wait, which was nice. The hostess and servers were all so kind and attentive. The kids enjoyed their pancakes and steak and eggs. Mama and I had the lobster benny special: lobster benedict with bacon and avocado over grilled cornbread with home fries. We were a bit skeptical at first of the cornbread, but it ended up being amazing. The sweetness of the cornbread played out amazingly with the perfectly cooked eggs and plentiful lobster. We were looking for a breakfast spot after an overnight in Rockport and walked by Sugar Mag's. Had a great omlet and Kip had a poached egg on muffin and their breakfast fries. Good staff. Served by Deb, there for 6 years. met the owner and a number of other people that were stopping by either to say hello or get some lunch. Great atmosphere. The only reason this place gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's so hard to get into. The staff is friendly and very busy. The breakfasts are excellent. The Irish Bene with an egg on top of cornbread is out of this world. The servings are so big you can easily split them if yuh are not starving. Put your name on the list and go elk around Main St for a bit. Cute shops in the area including an Italian specialty foods store, almost across the street (Daniella, the owner is super friendly and knowledgeable). Today was my first visit to this place at the recommendation of one of my best friends, who said on his first visit recently he experienced "the best breakfast I've ever had," which was the crab cakes Benedict. After hearing this, both my girlfriend and I were itching to go. Now I've tried out a lot of coffee shops in Gloucester, with George's being my favorite, but I have to say the breakfast menu of Sugar Mags is the most delicious I've seen in town. So, let's begin... My girlfriend and I arrived this Sunday morning around 10:30 to find the place packed and about three groups waiting to be seated. The hostess saw us come in, but had to seat another party first and then never came back to take our name. Another couple came in after us and walked up to the hostess stand where the hostess came up to take their name, which was when I promptly stepped up and said we had been waiting there first. We were then told the wait was going to be 20 minutes, although we ended up getting seated in less than 10 minutes. While we were waiting we noticed that the couple after us had asked for large paper cups to help themselves to a variety of brewed coffees along the wall. The option to drink coffee during your wait for a seat is one I haven't seen before and pretty cool in my opinion. Once seated, the hostess asked us what we wanted to drink. Immediately after, our waitress came by and asked for our drink order, but we referred to the hostess and very quickly the waitress brought our drinks over. I got a big cup of coffee and later on had a refill. The coffee was good and very hot. It seems Sugar Mags has their own blends you can buy, which I'm guessing they serve in the restaurant. I decided on the crab cakes Benedict with home fries. The menu is pretty big and offers a lot of different delicious looking breakfast items. The waitress returned for our order and I gave a compliment to their menu along with the meal I wanted. My girlfriend mentioned she needed some more time and the waitress replied something about not being able to put my meal in yet, crumpled up the order ticket she was writing on, and walked off. Hmmm, interesting. The next strike came when the waitress returned to get our order and my girlfriend asked if she could substitute linguica for ham on one of the menu items, to which the waitress replied "no" with the shake of her head and a slight smirk. I thought she was joking at first, but she was not. Her excuse for not allowing the substitution was that the linguica "is more expensive." We couldn't believe it. At the very least, she could have said they would do the substitution, but would have to add on an extra charge or give us some other option. No problem. However, she didn't give any suggestions. My girlfriend needed more time and the waitress walked off obviously annoyed with us. She didn't return for another 5 to 7 minutes, but must have walked past us 5 or 6 times. Finally, when she gave us attention again, my girlfriend was able to give her order - two eggs with ham, home fries, and pineapple fritters (with a side of linguica added for an extra $2.50). The food turned out to be good. The crab cakes were very, very good. Otherwise, the home fries were just okay as they were a bit bland. The fritters from my girlfriend's plate were delicious with the side of pineapple dipping sauce. Otherwise, everything else was on par with what we have tasted at other coffee shops in Gloucester. The value of the meal was justified and we enjoyed the lively atmosphere as well. It was only the snobby, bitchy attitude of our waitress that soured the experience. My girlfriend gave what was probably the first 10% tip of her life. It seemed the entire wait staff there was made up of young girls who were more concerned about their appearance than their service, although we only experienced the two I mentioned. Overall, I don't think we'll be wanting to come back any time soon, regardless of how good the menu looks. Side note: The picture of the crab cakes "Bene" on their website shows a side of dipping sauce on the plate (a horseradish type I presume), but I did not receive this with my meal. I was actually looking forward to enjoying that dipping sauce, so I was mildly disappointed. read more
