We ordered carryout and will definitely get it on every visit from now on! We tried and enjoyed the wings, coconut shrimp, sampler appetizer (chicken, pork, stamp & go and pattie) and jerk pork entree and had tons of food for 4 people to share. Deliciously simple and so well prepared! My very favorite is the half chicken drenched in their own tangy, sweet, jerk sauce with crispy plantains. But a close second is the fall-off-the-bone pork ribs, then their shrimp Caesar Salad is also incredible! Try and leave a little room for the tart key lime pie! I used to really like the Shack: nice Caribbean food, nice people, nice atmosphere. It's been a few years since I last visited. This time I came with a big (9) family group, mixed kids and adults. One change: they now take "reservations" (air quotes intended); they're for 5pm only, and since you still have to wait in line, there's no guarantee that you will not have to wait until one of the earlier line standers leaves. We got there early so had no probs, but heard later arrivals complaining. The menu is pretty much what I remember, but the "things we're known for" on the menu are now steaks and ribs. You can get the jerk chicken and goat curry I remember, but these are not what the wait staff pushes. (And yes, I ordered the ribs: very tender, spiced with a mild jerk-style rub, but not what I'd order again). And if you like highly spiced (i.e. normal) jerk seasoning, ask for extra or order something else, because they let us know when we ordered that they really keep it mild. The kiddies enjoyed their hamburgers and (really good double-fried) fries. The adults did not like the featured drink. Think of a strawberry milkshake, complete with whipped cream - with a shot of overly sweet grape wine as the alcohol component. I still shudder... So in summary, if you get tired of seafood, like really long waits, and enjoy Americanized Caribbean food, Sugar Shack will work for you. read more

Ate here Monday night. Table for 6 for the family. Really enjoyed the wings, they are addicting! The jerk pork was fantastic! The rice was a little dry but very tasty. The ribs my daughter and brother in-law had were very good. Their food was well seasoned but not overly spicy, so if you like flavor without a ton of heat this is your place. We did the seafood thing for lunch today, so we decided to try something different for dinner. I'm a fan of Caribbean food, and Sugar Shack did not disappoint! It's located on the mainland, but super close to the Ocean Isle bridge. The dress code is casual, which is perfect because I didn't feel like packing dress clothes for a quick weekend getaway. The restaurant is clean and simple. I liked the Jamaican artwork that was displayed. There is plenty of room for large groups, if needed. It was well staffed for the number of patrons there this evening. Our waiter, Jason, was friendly, helpful, and attentive. He said the restaurant is known for its ribs and steaks, so we decided to try the ribs. They are marinated all day in a tasty Jerk sauce. They literally fall off the bone, and were delicious. We chose the curry rice for our side, which was amazing! The entree is also served with a tender yam and creamy coleslaw. Because I love them, we also ordered a side of fried plantains that came to the table piping hot and caramelized and oh-my-god sooooooo good! We chose the smaller entree size, which was $20. A larger portion was available for $28. I can't image why anyone would need the larger portion, unless the plan was to share, for which they will charge you a $4 fee. Believe me when I say the smaller portion will be more than you need, but it tastes so good, you will probably eat it all anyway. I certainly did! read more

Understaffed, but there really wasn't room for one more body in the place. How could they ever pass a fire inspection? Food was decent but overpriced. Portions were good but where were the beans in the rice? Should rename it rice and one bean. Pork was really fatty and it's really difficult to eat a bone-in chicken when you are literally shoulder to shoulder to the next table. Summary: slow service, terrible ambience, ok food. We really enjoyed sugar shack when we were in ocean isle several years ago but our recent experience was a let down. I had the ribs and it was a good portion but they were very much over cooked almost to the point of being mushy. My wife's snapper was only ok. My son had the NY strip and requested it to be medium rare and it was served medium well. The steak marinade is on the sweet side and just wasn't something I would pair with beef. I was so excited about this place bc all the food we had on OIB was literally disgusting. Idk if I have high standards or what, but... The chicken tenders we ordered were raw in the center. I'm glad we cut the tenders instead of biting into the raw salmonella flesh of chicken. My husband ordered The jerk chicken was bland and flavorless. The Jonny bread was good (probably bc it was free) I ordered the coconut shrimp but it reminded me of the coconut shrimp I had at a hospital and we all can guess what hospital shrimp is like... This was our second time to sugar shack, firsttime visit was over 8 years ago, second visit was last night. We made a reservation, as we learned from the past it can be a difficult to get into. That being said it would not have been an issue last night as season does not start for a few weeks. This is a on the smaller side for restaurants so they move people in and out at a good pace. We we're a party of six. I did not catch the name of our server. He was corky but fun, attentive and accommodating. We had a shellfish allergy in our group, so they were great to fix a mix-up very quickly. We started with the crab fritters, which were deep fried and crisp on the outside but perfect on the inside, we would order these again. They are known for their steak and ribs. People in our group ordered both and without a doubt they were a must order. The ribs fell right off the bone, they had a great flavor. The steak was ridiculous! Tender and juicy! I ordered for my side the plantains, sweet and tender. The other sides ordered at the table were the curry rice, rice and beans, and the veggies. Everyone enjoyed them all. The other entrees ordered we're the coconut shrimp and steak, the jerk chicken wings and the curried goat. The coconut shrimp tasted like candy, so sweet with big flakes of coconut. The chicken wings were also a hit, ask for a side of the mango habanero sauce. The curried goat had mixed reviews and was taken off the bill as person who ordered it did not enjoy it. We did order dessert to go. The mango raspberry cheesecake which was good but nothing to write home about. The lava cake was delicious, we zapped it in the microwave for 1 minute topped with ice cream and it was melty goodness. I would recommend making this one of your restaurant stops when you are in the area and you aren't looking for seafood. read more

I've eaten here several times in the past but I just feel like it's not the experience it used to be. My ribs were at least 50% fat. They did not used to be that way. It's hard to call them fall off the bone when you have to dig through the fat to get to the meat. Our kids had the cod fritters which were basically black - they were so over fried. I hate to bash a local establishment, but we just paid $200 for a mediocre at best meal. When I mentioned the change in the ribs, the waiter told me to try the steak instead. I had been wanting to visit the Sugar Shack for a while. I traditionally go to OIB about once a year and this last visit was my first to this restaurant. I ordered the rib and coconut shrimp combo and enjoyed the food. The rice and beans mixture I enjoyed also. The only downside is the food isn't authentic Jamaican and the building isn't too impressive. Also, very pricey I thought, but overall a positive experience.
