We came in on a Friday night at 6:30. The server had an odd attitude really. He told us they were out of snapper, steak, grilled chicken, and shrimp. The only things left on the menu were jerk chicken and pork, ribs, and a chicken stew. I had a hamburger that was completely underwhelming. Large burger on a plain bun with a piece of lettuce, no fixings. The fried plantain was good. Our friends enjoyed the ribs and my husband enjoyed the stew. But nothing I had planned to order was available. Just odd to be out of a majority of the menu. No one seemed to care about that, and the hostess made a wierd comment about the fact that I asked to be seated in a quieter area so we could hear each other talk. Won't be back. read more

Each year while at the beach we make sure we stop here for at least 1 meal. The food does not disappoint! The best steak and rice you'll ever have! The jerk sauce is so good too, we always buy a bottle to take home. The service is always great, fast and polite. They love telling the story over how the restaurant got started. This is one of those places that I don't get to eat at all the time. But it the place you want to keep under wraps so that no one knows how good the food is. Get the early and have a reservation because you can't get in. Food is always good fresh and lots of good tasty things to try. I got the steak wife got ribs and daughter well she got a burger and fries. Appetizer we got meat patties and crab bits. So yes I recommend this place with 5 stars. Do not go here! First we arrived with 22 people instead of our reservation of 25. We tried to call to let them know we had less people, but they did not open until five.The hostess was very rude and said they turned away people to seat our party. Did I mention we had to put down a deposit for the reservation? Honestly should've just left then. Then they had no chicken tenders for my son. They also serve no liquor. My other son was super excited to try their steak and we were the first party in the restaurant. After two people ordered steak they said they were out. We also wanted bread and they told us they were running low and could not give us any more. Honestly, I have been to countless restaurants in my life, and this was by far the worst experience I've ever had. Everyone was just super rude especially the hostess. The Sugar Shack is a wonderful local Ocean Isle spot that has been around for years. The owners formerly lived in New York and loved the food in Jamaica so much that they quit their jobs and started a restaurant on the beach. The food and ambiance are both amazing although currently, they are doing either outdoor dining only or pick up. Over the years I have had various dishes at the Sugar Shack and yet to have a meal that I didn't like. My favorites are the crab fritters and the coconut shrimp. The curry chicken and Jamaican patties are also super tasty. The sauces that come with dinner are also made in house and compliment the shrimp and crab perfectly. They also have a spiced bread served with meals called a Johnny cake which is also out of this world! If you are headed to Ocean Isle and are going to get takeout, make sure add the Sugar Shack to your list! read more

Omg so good. I had never had Jamaican food before besides Jamaican beef patties so me and I my husband know the owners linda and Dave so decided to eat here last Saturday. It was very crowded but they sat us quick and service was quick .nice ambience. Kathy waited on us. She is the best. First they bring you complimentary Johnny cakes which is like corn bread but much better. Delicious. I had a frozen strawberry drink with ice cream and wine and was delicious. I ordered two appetizers cause I'm not a very big eater. My husband also got an appetizer cause he had a big lunch. They have a huge menu with most of the jamaican specialities and desserts too. I had the coconut shrimp which was amazing. Crispy and tasty sauce. And the Jamaican beef patty that was so good. My husband had the jerk chicken bites and pork bites. The jerk style of cooking the chicken is so moist and delicious and flavor full. We shared all 3 of the apps and they are pretty big in size too .we also had their home made slaw so good. Sugar Shack is a gem of a Jamaican Restaurant! We ordered take out, as we had a toddler in our party and wanted to enjoy our dinner. We ordered the ribs, the sautéed snapper, the curried goat and the jerk pork. All with rice and beans or curried rice and Jamaican Cole slaw. Everything was ready when we arrived and perfectly packed and very tasty! We also had the plantains, which were perfect! I read the reviews and tried to ignore the bad ones. I was influenced by the waiter when he described the New York strip. I asked for medium, it was served rare, blood red and cold in the middle and extremely chewy. Husband and son both got ribs. They were fall off the bone tender, and tasty, but not amazing. The best part of our meal was the key lime pie. The worst part was a large table of about 12. Two of the ladies at that table were very inebriated and loud. When my husband mentioned the noise to employees on a break, they also were very annoyed with the loud table but no one bothered to ask them to be respectful of the other patrons. We were 4 tables away and could not hear each other. The two tables closer to them left abruptly and I heard them both complaining about the noise. We LOVE this place and worth the trip from St James! The food is unlike anywhere else around here. BEST coconut shrimp anywhere! And, don't judge - I always get the jerk goat. Delicious! We really enjoy eating at Sugar Shack when we come to Sunset Beach. It's a casual and colorful smaller restaurant with good food and friendly service. Despite the standard sides, the jerk chicken and jerk ribs are yummy! I can recommend the curried rice and cole slaw as sides. They have beer and sangria and the usual deserts such as key lime pie and chocolate cake, although the deserts do not seem to made in house. But come for the chicken and ribs and friendly atmosphere! The servings are ample and I always take home what I can't finish! Food comes out quickly and service is very attentive. We usually arrive early as the restaurant is popular and there can be a wait. I've been going to Ocean Isle Beach annually since 2013 and while we don't eat at restaurants or get takeout every night (I know some families do), we usually try a restaurant once per our week there. With that said, I think Sugar Shack is the best we've found--I LOVED it. We had a large group and placed a carryout order. Due to the nature, I feel like the food always take a hit, but I found nothing wrong with the meal. First, there was PLENTY of food in each serving--I don't think anyone from our group finished, but that didn't have to do with the quality or quantity. You get a lot. I went with the Jerk Chicken and my wife ordered the Curry Chicken. When we try new restaurants, we frequently decide ahead of time that we're going to split both of our meals so that we can each try a variety of dishes from new places--more on that in a sec. We also split an order of Coconut Shrimp that was superb. The jerk chicken was SO good. It was 1/2 a chicken and the seasoning and smoke were some of the best I've ever had--I loved it. The rice that came with it was also incredibly tasty and not something that is just there or just a side. I feel like a lot of sides are offered just because they have to and need to fill people up, but it tastes like real effort was put into the sides I got to taste from Sugar Shack. So how was the Curry Chicken--I was going to try that too, right? Welp, I didn't get to try it because (and I'm being kind to her here) my wife devoured it. However, we visited tonight and were so impressed, the wife had the curried chicken which she thought was great and I got the jerk pork on the advice of our waiter. Really delicious meal! Made a reservation for 7pm. We waited to be seated for 50 minutes, and ordered a drink while waiting, and were brought the wrong one. Once seated, the service was very inconsistent as the waitress took about 30 minutes for us to be able to order our food. While ordering our food we were told that the dish we wanted was no longer available, which after waiting almost and hour and half at this point was quite frustrating. One of the other servers seemed quite rude to other patrons near us and made the vibe of the place just feel off. The plates we ended up ordering were good, but the food is not good enough to justify the price and definitely not good enough to justify such a wait time. Sugar Shack has been a staple for our family the last ten years whenever we're at Sunset Beach vacationing. Even during the pandemic shutdowns we still purchased take out from the restaurant. This year it's great to see they are open for in-house dining. We did order takeout again our favorites are the coconut shrimp and the ribs. I ordered the full rack of ribs but was told they only had one size, bigger than the half rack but smaller than a full rack. The menu price was $20 for a half rack and $28 for a full rack the new one size price was $25. Very disappointed, I hope they go back to their regular menu. I'm still hungry read more

Came to the restaurant at 4:45pm when it opens at 5pm just to get a table and we waited an HOUR AND A HALF PLUS for food in plastic containers. Ended up getting it to-go because of the flies that attack you and the food. The people working were rude and gave you BS excuses for everything they used to have (i.e. no dessert, no bread because blah blah blah).
