We found our new go-to spot! We moved up north from Denver and were really feeling short changed on the fine eateries around this area. We wanted to check out Sugarbeet and we're so glad we came in. I ordered the lamb with spaetzle and a grave leaf chimichurri. I enjoyed every single bite. My husband ordered the hanger steak and he enjoyed his plate as well. We also had the mussels to start. They weren't the typical clear brothed mussels. They had a deep rich broth which were perfect for our cold snowy day weather. We also took home a loaf of the sourdough bread which they make in house. Great wine selections, attentive service, good atmosphere. We will definitely be back to try more of their menu. So happy we found this place!! read more

I had high expectations from this restaurant, but the help completely ruined my experience at the Sugarbeet. If you like over priced bland food and snobby pretentious service in a phony upscale country club atmosphere in a down to earth town known for its great hospitality, this place is for you. Concerned it was a "fancy" upscale place, I called ahead of time to ask if there was a dress code, if I needed a reservation, and if they had high chairs for toddlers, and if it was even ok to bring a toddler. They told me there was no dress code, usually they prefer a reservation, and that kids were ok and to come on down. So I did. Although the food was way over priced and bland, I was having a good time right up until dessert. The bar tender came over and scolded my wife for my 1.5yr old son making too much noise. We were SHOCKED! My son was doing nothing but being a cute little happy boy. I'm originally from San Francisco and have dined at some of the finest restaurants the city has to offer and I NEVER experienced anything like this, ever. I've been going here since Sugarbeet opened. I was a huge Gateway (formerly in Lyons) fan and I thought no other place could fill the void when James Van Dyck closed it. I was wrong. The Sugarbeet competes admirably on virtually every level. The owners, Seth and Justine, make a tremendous commitment to support local, organic farmers and the quality of the ingredients they buy comes out in Sugarbeet's dishes. It is rare to find a chef that truly understands how to accentuate the flavor of ingredients without overwhelming them, and Seth has that down cold. He also has the security to share his recipes with you if you ask. On a recent trip, my dinner mate and I could not decide what we wanted for an appetizer. No problem: Seth made one up on the spot and it was superb. The menu changes frequently and seasonally, as it should. Fish, shellfish, meat and poultry all get admirable treatment. The staff is professional and friendly, and they remember my name even when I totally can't remember theirs. Good luck finding that elsewhere. If you've endured any of my other reviews you'll know I am not a dessert person. Yet when Sugarbeet staff recites the specials I am tempted more often then not. The place smelled like fish. The lamb was pretty good. The portions were european, which is fine, and the prices were more commensurate with high-trend dining, which is also fine. Or rather would be fine if the place wasn't suffused with that horrible fish smell. The waiter was pretty good. He was very informal, actually called me "dude" at one point, but he got our orders right and did everything quickly and well. He needed some help with a corkscrew, but that's not a problem. Overall I think I'd have loved this place except that the smell of fish seemed to override everything. The smell of my food, the smell of my wine, everything. read more

Soooooooo, we LOVED this place. After hearing about sugar beet for quite some time, and finding ourselves hungry when we were in the area, we decided to check it out. We had a reservation, but got there a ways before our reservation. We were presented with the option of waiting at the bar to wait for our table inside, or get sat right away at a table outside. We chose the outside option, as it was a nice night and were quickly sat. This came with some challenges that were unknown to us at the time. One of which was the train, which not only came by, but stopped when it did, which caused us to hear a pretty annoying bell for quite a while. The other was an attack of mosquitos. Both of these were address in about as good of a way as possible. Both times we were asked if we would like to be moved inside, which was about all you could do about the train, with the mosquitos, we were also offered a natural bug spray, which we did accept. That sums up the only slightly negative things I have to offer about the evening. The train did offer some entertaining watching, as we viewed how certain cars dealt with the train. The remainder of the night was great. Our waiter, his name escapes me right now, was fantastic. He was well timed, very helpful, and very honest. Gave guidance where he could, made suggestions, but also spoke truly about wines he had and likes, but also said he hadn't had wines he didn't, which I prefer much more to those that say everything is great. The food we had was exceptional. A fantastic cheese plate, litterally one of the best salads I have ever had in my life, and a perfectly cooked ribeye with crab butter on time. My wife had food too, but who cares, did you read what I just said? A perfectly cooked ribeye with crab butter?!?!?!??! Yum. I have a new favorite restaurant. After a particularly stressful day, which involved a trip to Office Max to return a new laptop that turned out to be a lemon, we treated ourselves to a dinner at Sugarbeet sans kids. It was excellent. Interesting menu, excellent service, delicious food--the halibut was superb, flavorful, flakey, luscious--and affordable wine list. Who could ask for anything more? Well, parking was a bit funky but I can live with that. Oh yeah, I loved the ambience inside. Dark and light, creative, whimsical, classy. Give it a try. read more

Well, I don't want to sound as if I have never been out of the house, but, when it comes to eating out in Longmont, I rarely go out. Why? Because I have typically been disappointed. If I am feeling Italian, I go to Ragazzi's on Francis or I do takeout pizza at Luc's off of Hover Road. Sugarbeets was this new (a year ago now Oct/Nov of 08) refreshing change that offered "a something" that wasn't found elsewhere in Longmont. As someone else who reviewed Sugarbeets stated, "It is nice to be able to go out to a nice restaurant, have a great experience and do so in Longmont.". I was last there about 6 months ago and I am writing this portion of the review on June 24th, of 2008. I plan on updating this review the next time I am at Sugarbeets. Unfortunately, I can not quite remember what I ordered, though, it very well could have been the Ahi Tuna. What I do remember is challenging the other three adults at the table to good conversation in order to go along with the great food that we had that evening. When we left, we walked away with the idea that this was a nice restaurant to have close by as we live about 8 blocks away. Definitely one of the best salads I have had in a long, long time. Hard to believe it is located right down the street from my neighborhood... this salad made me not crave my delicious entre that I knew was coming next. Because it was that good. For an Entre, I said "What the hell" and order the Filet Mignon. They describe it this way, "Certified Angus Filet Mignon with peppercorn cognac sauce and roasted root vegetables" and it was soooo wonderful. I was happily sated. I want to go back right now. Definitely. This time I will state that service was excellent, unobtrusive, available and on the money. I had no room for dessert after all that, but, I would definitely go back to Sugarbeets and I am looking forward to it. It will definitely be sooner than another 6 months. read more

Great restaurant! This was our second visit, the first time was right after Sugarbeet opened ... and we were really happily surprised by how well they have settled in. Drinks were excellent -- really nice martinis...for an appetizer we had oysters on the half shell...fresh, cold, and beautifully-shucked. Salads were good, and entrees were excellent. We ordered a boulliabaise and pan-seared lamb. Shared both, yummy! Shared a grilled pineapple desert -- nice finish to a very good dinner. Highly recommended! read more

I had the lamb which I'm terribly picky about yet it melted in my mouth and my husband's pork chop was cooked to perfection. This restaurant is tucked away from the 'regular' pedestrian environment in Longmont. It is located in the industrial area, which is this establishment's first surprise. In addition, the service is outstanding and the food is surprisingly local, foody, and 'Boulder-esque', which is the biggest surprise of all. It feels like 'The Kitchen' of Longmont. Quality is excellent. The source of the food is as close to Boulder as possible. Even the drinks are outstanding. The husband and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary here tonight. It's our second time participating in their culinary magic. Tonights salad was a particularly notable spring delight, garnished with edible flowers and bright colors. But each course was something of beauty. The creativity coming from the chef is truly exciting to see in such a small town. Service both times we have come was authentic and consistently experiential. There are lots of good reviews on Sugarbeet but I don't think I am too harsh. I was there last night for the first time for a business dinner. The service was very good, but the food was disappointing. I had the cream of asparagus with salmon soup as a starter. The soup was under season. There were few chunks of grilled salmon which served no purpose in the soup. The soup was screaming for a salty component. How about some salty smoked salmon instead? Now, that's an idea. My main course was the crab cake with some diced vegetables, spinach and sweet corn. It was also very bland. The waitress brought me a green sauce after all our main courses came out. I am not sure if the chef forgot to put the sauce on the plate or the sauce was intended to be on the side. That green sauce was good and would have been pretty if it was poured around the plate. The crab cakes were tasteless and definitely from frozen crab meat. The winner of the night was the dessert particularly the grilled pineapple slice with coconut ice cream, caramel and some toasted almonds. Highly recommended. Overall, it was an OK experience. The service was definitely very good. I will give it a try again but may not be high on my list. read more

Good: *Excellent asparagus starter. *Good Burrata *Amazing Rack of Lamb - Incredible combination of flavors, absolute genius, almost perfectly cooked (except one side was a bit overcooked so it was on one side longer than it should have been), but more importantly perfectly prepared. *Great Apple Mule *Perfect service Bad: *Happy hour not available in the dining area (is this 1992?) *Lyons 75 cocktail just tastes like grapefruit, no champagne, no gin, can't taste the rosemary or the Cava. *Decor is... spartan. Lighting is amateur. *The menu has a LOT of food that is uninspiring or boring. Needs to be revised, or maybe that is their intent, to appeal to a much older crowd. Either way, Excellent food. Vegetables were perfect, not a millimeter of wilt on the plate and the meat was amazing. The identity here is what needs work. Get rid of the stuffy happy hour policy, casualize the place to match the decor, and keep executing high-level cuisine, so you won't disappear when your aging clientele does soon. read more

My previoius experiences here weren't the best, but TOM & I decided to give it another go this evening, and am truly happy we did. We didn't have a reservation, so were offered seats at the bar or on the patio. We chose the bar, and boy am I glad we did! There we were treated to first rate service from Richard, the manager & bar keep, who is probably the best service industry professional in town. I'm so glad he works there now. Richard's knowledge of cuisine and bevvies is extensive, and he gave us a full run through of the menu and his recommendations. I ordered the brussels sprouts app & the crab risotto, and TOM chose a pear & blue cheese in a pastry puff app and the cassoulet. Is it fair to complain about too much food? While the prices are steep for Longmont, the portions were ginormous and I knew after just my app that I'd never get through my entire meal. And what an an app it was! What's not to like about roasted brussels sprouts topped with fantastic cheese? I could've, nay, SHOULD'VE made that my whole meal. It was delicious. Not to say the risotto wasn't good, it was... but now I'm too stuffed to move and I have a fridge full of leftovers that I know won't quite taste as good as it did in the ambience of the restaurant-- which is quite lovely and intimate, despite being in a multi-use commercial building. They really did a knock out job with the finishes in the place. Oh! And the dessert! TOM ordered a flourless chocolate cake, which was divine. Seriously, I'm not the hugest chocolate fan, but that cake was heavenly. All in all, I think I may have turned a corner with my love/hate relationship with Sugarbeet tonight. One thing-- the menu turns constantly, so if you're dying to get there for those sprouts, I'd call ahead to see if they're still offered. THis place is awesome! I stumbled upon it one day when I was looking for a late lunch. I went to the cheese importers warehouse and they had just stopped serving sandwiches which I was bummed about but as it turns out the guy behind the deli counter when I admitted I was guided there by yelp reviews had come out from behind the counter and started a chat with me about places and goes on to recommend the Sugarbeet accross the street sort of by the longmont post office in the mainly industrial area, you would be surprised to find this caliber restaurant in the warehouse building that it stands in, but with food as good as this place has, you will understand why they don't even need a sign really, the food speaks for itself and it doesn't need to be on pearl street to make a splash. Im sure they do alright with just the word of mouth, and at this point Id dare to say this place may be the best place in longmont. So on to the food.... WOW I sat at the bar and happy hour was in full effect. There was another couple of people at the bar doing the same thing and a few tables seated. This was a tuesday. So I started asking the bartender about the restaurant and I noticed that this tiny bar was very very well stocked with local beers on tap and pretty much every kind of liquor you could imagine. They even had some nice signature cocktails which I indulged in. As it turns out there are three executive chefs here and they change up the menu every 3 months or so I think. Heres what I ordered. House smoked Beef Carpaccio pickled Chiogga beet endive horseradish toast points $6 Crispy Green Rice and Swiss Chard Fritter spicy serrano vinegar apricot honey $5 Crispy Pork Belly pineapple-habanero glaze baby bok choy kimchi spicy peanut sauce (GF) $5 The beef was so tender and tasted so seasoned, it came with toast points that were fresh and the pickled chioga beet and endives and capers made the dish refreshing and appealing. The crispy green rice and swiss chard fritter was amazing, not what I imagined when I ordered it but it was some awesome eats, and the spicy serrano vinegar and apricot honey dipping sauce was to die for. Finally the juicy succulent crispy pork belly, Now my mom is korean and pork belly is a koreans favorite part of the pork so I know what is good and this was maybe the most buttery piece of pork belly Ive ever had, so juicy and glistening with the glazed habanero and pineapple that is grilled to perfection. The sauce and salad was just an added bonus. This place was fantastic for happy hour but im not sure about dinner. There were only a few main entres and they were about 25-35 ea, im sure you could drop a pretty penny in this place with some wine etc. My meal came out to about 45 bux with a beer and two cocktails and my convo with the others at the bar and the bartender were priceless. Pulled into the parking lot and the restaurant is kind of in an industrial area, so a little concerned. But once inside it was perfect; clean, modern and upscale. Sugarbeet is an off-the-beaten path, farm-to-fork restaurant (or at least it tries to be -- no true farm to fork would have asparagus on its menu in January). There's some nice creative choices on the menu, particularly in the appetizer section. They include smoked buffalo carpaccio, dates stuffed with gorgonzola cheese, and crab fritters. Prices in the $8-$11 range. We had a choice of four salads, including a special classic Caesar that was very well done and filling. The marinated kale salad also is a nice touch, served in a cup of radicchio in a glass bowl. Entrees are hearty: the short rib fettucine was massive and delicious. My duck confit was tasty, but the pool of ricotta cheese and polenta was overwhelming and had I eaten it all, I doubt my arteries would still be functioning. Just too much mush. We split a special grilled pineapple dessert with coconut ice cream. Service was fine, nothing more or less than you'd expect from a high end restaurant. Overall a very good choice for a special occasion or some fine dining. It just was missing that special something that would earn it 5 stars. read more

We were in town visiting family from the Seattle area for Christmas, and came here for Christmas Eve dinner. The service was absolutely horrible. At one point after sitting there for 15 minutes, another server asked if we had been helped yet. Another 5 minutes later and our server appeared. Granted, it was a holiday but still. I ordered the halibut. Was extremely disappointed as it was horribly over cooked, some parts of it were so tough, it was practically jerky. Ordinarily, I would have sent it back, but as it took about 45 minutes to get the entree in the first place, I just ate what was edible. Months ago I decided a 3 to 1 ratio of 4 to 5 star reviews was ideal. It would show restraint and promote thoughtful reviews. Then you visit restaurants like Sugarbeet where my internal monologue is going " WAH!! Best dessert ever! How do I recreate this?!" Once I found out about First Bite Boulder, I quickly researched the restaurants. That meant I looked at menus from places I've always wanted to visit to restaurants with interesting unfamiliar names. That's how I discovered Sugarbeet and their tempting $26 3 course fixed price menu. I called ahead confirming that they would have seat openings without reservation (in the bar area) and I could get out within the hour (avalanche seminar at REI). I could. Sugarbeet was quiet when I arrived at 5:15pm. This could be because they recently changed to being open Tuesdays. Things to notice: they have a really nice happy hour menu with mussels, pate, and more. They'll let you squeeze under the happy hour finish tape if you're quick. Their First Bite Boulder menu consists of 3 options under appetizer, entree, and dessert and should please vegetarians, celiacs, and carnivores. I ordered the porcini and pecan pate, parma prosciutto wrapped chicken breast, and the frozen maple mouse. The generous helping of pate was plated with crunchy rosemary crostini, small salad with tomatoes, and lingonberry jam. This arrived about 3 minutes after I placed my order. Dealing with a recent mushroom aversion, the pate was remarkably done. A small amount goes a long way. The jam and salad were great palate cleansers. Next was the remarkable prosciutto wrapped chicken breast stuffed with kale, golden raisins and pine nuts lying on a bed of soft polenta. This was seasonal dining at its finest and too much for one person. The chicken was tender, the prosciutto soft yet crispy enough to cut through, the vegetables a perfect contrast. The raisins added sweetness, the thin slices of lemon peel adorning the top some zest, and the kale a cleanser. The final course was the froze maple mousse with cranberry ginger sauce. This was one of the best desserts I've ever had! Frozen nearly to the point of ice cream cake; still easily sliced with a fork. The cranberries were deliciously tart enough while ginger's spiciness lent some heat. And the maple flavor was subtly present, never overpowering like it typically does. Delicious! I want this recipe! Overall, this was a great experience. There was some frustration with the bartender's inability to answer my question about the stuffing inside the chicken, but the food assuaged those concerns. read more

This is a rough one to even write, it was not a great experience. It was a Tuesday evening and I took clients there for dinner. This is typically a decent place to eat and I am surprised by this dinner. We were met and seated quickly as we had a reservation, and the server was great. They talked about there new menu and there were no specials that evening. He also told us that a 30 top has just put there order in so it is going to take a bit for our food. Ok, that is fine. I can understand being slammed. I started with a glass of wine and then off to apps, the server recommended the roasted cauliflower. It was an ok app but almost NO seasoning and very dry. Everyone tried it but there was more than half left on the plate as no one took seconds. The server took our order and I ordered the filet. The server said they are out of the filet tonight. They have only 2 steaks on the entire menus so I ordered the Bistro steak which he said is the second most tender piece of meat. I asked if it was a ribeye or strip, he said no....it was the shoulder of the cow. Hmmmm, I have never heard of a shoulder steak but the fish on the menu was not to my liking so I went with the Bistro. Another in the party ordered the same, one went with the halibut and the other with a salad. After about 25 minutes, the entrees arrived. There were 3 small beef medallions on a bed of (tablespoon) of Kale and french fries. I am not a fan of french fries for a fancy steak meal, but they were just fine. What was served to me was not a steak, it was the end piece of a roast, and it was not good at ALL. That was some kind of VERY TOUGH roast cut very thin and served. It was extremely chewy and not at all tender. I was shocked it was that bad. It had no salt or pepper or seasoning of any kind. There is no way a chef can look at that dish and be proud of that plate. Why is that on the menu. Shame I would rather eat a Applebee's steak, as bad as that is, it would have been better than this shoe leather. $26 bucks....for that.. 3-1 oz medallions of roast. I have eaten a lot of places, that was the worst steak I had in my 50 years on this earth. I would love to talk to the chef about this steak shoulder. The other only ate 1 of the steak medallions and the fish was just fine. What a disappointment. I am embarrassed for this restaurant. read more

My husband and I started with the charred romaine salad, with a bit of spicy kick, then on to halibut with leek foam and bacon dust - excellent and fresh-as-can-be, and the seared ahi tuna, which got 5 stars. Oh, the sourdough bread - exquisite, crunchy exterior, melt in your mouth interior. Tart and tasty key lime pie to finish. We went here tonight for our anniversary. We were excited for our first in restaurant meal since covid. They suggested masks, provided sanitizer at each table, and had the option of viewing the menu on your phone or paper. We started with the crab cakes and were surprised and impressed by how much crab meat rather than filler they were made of. I had the filet and husband had the halibut- no complaints about either. Oh. My. Goodness! This place is unexpectedly warm and inviting, intimate and romantic. Our server, Tabby, was so great. She was fun, genuine, and most importantly, intuitive. We had a comical little exchange about the redness of our steak and never really gave a definitive answer. Tabby communicated with the chefs and brought us perfectly cooked, absolutely delicious steaks. And don't get me started on the roasted beets! Overpriced, snooty, poor customer service. Mushroom soup was delicious. Ordered the halibut which came under cooked. Sent it back and when it was returned, only half the portion was on the dish. When brought to the managers attention he insisted that the entire filet was on the plate and made us feel foolish. No compensation for the under cooked half portioned meal. read more
