I love this place! I went here for the first time when my dad came to town for a visit - he's good for picking restaurants that are not on the "main drag", and they (mostly) always turn out to be good ones! So we just went for it with this one and, sure enough, the food was great! We just had breakfast though, so we were in and out pretty quick that time. I decided to take my boyfriend here on the weekend for dinner. The atmosphere was a complete change from day to night; candles on the tables, less crowded (though it was pretty early when we went), and just more intimate-feeling. I ordered the Bison Chili, our waitress's recommendation, and it was delicious. My boyfriend got the curry-something, which was also great. We ended up sharing both of our meals, had a few beers and some great conversation. It was an excellent evening. We almost went back the very next night, but decided to change it up... but we will definitely be back again for another casual, intimate date like last time! Obviously, the place to be on a Saturday at 12pm. There was a line of people when we arrived, they should have a Host to deal with the mass confusion that is while waiting to see how long the wait will be. We had a server approach, ask who is next, which was us. We got in immediately because we didn't mind sitting outside, in the sun. Took awhile for our server to come greet us. They were out of a lot of drafts which was disappointing, so I settled on a coke. The server was friendly. The food was good, I wish the cinnamon bun came with icing, as I found it a bit dry. My Friends and I ate here and the service was quite terrible. Multiple times throughout the night we were forgotten (orders came at different times, orders were forgotten) and had to wait a very long time for drinks....then food...then our bills... I was a server for numerous years and I understand that sometimes the night gets really busy but in this scenario it was either that the restaurant was understaffed (in which case they should hire more servers for the night) or that this server (Braden) was new or negligent. Hip bistro. Great quality breakfast comfort food. Fun decor. Seemed like a long line but we were seated in 15 minutes. The French toast with creme fraiche and fruit compote was probably my most favorite way to prepare French Toast. My daughter didn't appreciate but my husband and I inhaled it. I've loved the SugarBowl for years. Great menu, innovative feature foods, and a nearly unsurpassed (and definitely competitive) beer selection. The staff all seem to love their jobs, even at the craziest times; I've never felt unwelcome or ignored. It's more family friendly during daytime hours, but being so close to the UofA it is ALWAYS packed. They keep their prices pretty low in order to stay student-friendly; so you can have a great night out without the soul-crushing guilt or debt. It looks like it was an old garage or grocery store that was converted and has been a food service establishment in one form or another since 1943!!! The arguably small space is used very well, and the two large rolling doors/windows are opened during warm weather, blending the inside with the outside patio in a way that feels comfortable. They feature local art on the exposed brick walls, which is usually for sale and as such changes on a regular basis. They definitely have a Hipster vibe without being obnoxious (or any of the other negative connotations of the subculture). The food at the sugar bowl does not disappoint. My favourite dishes are the paprika popcorn, Mac n cheese, lamb burger and the bread pudding. I'm usually not a popcorn fan but was pleasantly surprised by the slightly and salty taste. The Mac n cheese has a little kick to it and the bread pudding is my go-to dessert when I'm craving chocolate and banana. But the lamb burger really takes the cake! The burger is tender not tough, the toppings are fresh and the cheese is fantastic. Plus they aren't cheap with the fries:) the one downside is the incredible noise in the room on any given night, quite hard to have a conversation. read more

We ordered two cinnamon buns for lunch. They arrived cold, so we asked to have them heated up. They then arrived a few degrees warmer. Fortunately by that time our butter had completely melted, so we could pour it on our room temperature buns. :( The buns themselves were unsubtle and a bit stale. We still left a decent tip, because we thought the poor food and service was probably caused by management penny-pinching. Not recommended and will not go again. read more

Easily one of my favourite restaurants in Edmonton! I come to Sugarbowl on a regular basis - I've had the lamb burger, beef burger, pulled pork sandwich, chicken and waffles, bison chili and farmer sausage, and never been disappointed. The food is always flavorful, hot, and delicious, and with the large portion sizes, you definitely aren't hungry at the end of it. I think my only complaint about the food would be the ketchup - I'm just not a fan of fancy artisan ketchups. The beer menu at this place is incredible; even as someone who doesn't drink a whole lot of beer, I can always find something I like. The waitstaff usually have great recommendations. Service has always been friendly here, and even when the place is incredibly busy, I've never had an issue with being ignored by a server. Eating here during the lunch or dinner rush can look like absolute madness, but the lineup moves faster than it looks, and the food is well worth the wait. read more

There are only four things in this world that make me fall in love with a restaurant; good drinks, good service, good parking, and cornbread. The SugarBowl has 3/4. To start, their beer rotation is pretty spectacular. The featured drafts change frequently, with a wide variety from classic ales and local IPAs to exotic sours and some potent stouts. The staff are mostly knowledgeable enough to make suggestions based on what you're interested in, and those who aren't are quick to throw out their own personal favourites. The Happy Hour prices are not to be laughed at, unless you've had several beers already and are in a great mood. Service is great; The staff are friendly, with a few regulars who will remember your orders after a couple of visits. Or maybe that's just because I eat here so often?... They check up on you often enough to be helpful without interrupting your meal, and even on the busiest of days, AKA almost every single day, you won't have to wait long before your food is served. Parking is the one area where the SugarBowl falls short, though I don't really blame them. The Garneau District is a historic part of the city, with many older buildings paired up with newer residences. There is very limited street parking out front, but it's not too difficult to find free parking within a couple of blocks in the residential areas of the neighbourhood. Whatever the restaurant lacks in parking, it MORE than makes up for with it's food. I have one word for you - CORNBREAD. I don't even know the exact word to describe the moist, rich, buttery goodness that is the SugarBowl cornbread. Those three adjectives pale in comparison to the actual experience of consuming it. I mean, the other menu options are great - I particularly recommend the sweet and savoury goodness that is the pulled pork sandwich, or the omelette of the day, which is laways inventive and fresh - but the cornbread takes the cake for me. Or rather, the bread. The cornbread. Mmmm. I may have a problem, but it is solved with cornbread. So one day, in one of Edmonton's eight months of winter, pop into the SugarBowl, grab a pint, and and order some cornbread - I promise you won't regret it. read more

I specifically go here for the best Eggs Benny in town. Instead of using an English muffin as the base, they traded it out for homemade corn bread. Mmmm so yummy. Living in Old Strathcona it is hard not to enjoy Sugarbowl! This is my go to for a good brunch, drinks after class or a late night snack. Sugarbowl is a small gastro-pub stype atmosphere just off of 109th Street by the University of Alberta. Service can be hit or miss depending on how busy they are, but the beer selection and food always seen to make up for that. I recently went for a quick dinner with my fiancee and we had excellent service! I ordered the black bean, quinoa and mushroom veggie burger and he had the special (chicken pesto burger), and both were so delicious. I could only eat about half of my veggie burger because it was so filling. We even asked the waitress for the ingredients so we can try to make it at home and she came out with a list of everything in it which was very nice! The beer is a little expensive (mid-range) but the huge selection and rotating taps make it worth it. My main tip, if you're planning to come for brunch, afternoon drinks, or dinner plan to come early and possibly wait in line for a while. They have such a small amount of seating that it can take a while to get in, but put your name on the list and take a walk around the beautiful neighborhood it's located in. I met my significant other here for our first date, so sugarbowl holds a soft spot for me. Despite that, and all bias aside, I am obsessed with their beer menu and rotating taps. The best selection, sitting alongside Beer Revolution, that I know of in the city. I am vegetarian so for me the food options are limited depending on their specials, but the food I do order is always delicious, fresh and you can tell they pay attention to detail. As a result we end up here for happy hour, brunch or dinner a few times a month at a minimum. Service is always above and beyond and despite having a hipster vibe, the clientele and staff are far from that, conversing with guests and creating a really welcoming atmosphere. I have been to this place a few times since moving to Edmonton. I like place such as this, they have a concise limited menu. The food is good, and served promptly. This places defiantly has a trendy cool vibe, lots of people on dates on a weeknight. The servers are young and good looking, think bartender with manbun, visible tattoos in chinos, you get the picture. They have jazz blaring on a weeknight. Some of the furniture looks antique, I think it's supposed to look salvaged, can't be sure. The brass on the bar is a nice touch, I feel way more legit eating of this surface than any other. Filled with weird wooden tables at obtuse angles, smart-alecky and spunky servers serving cinnamon buns that the Greek Gods must talk about. Oh, and did I mention the intense and abundant beer list?! The Sugar Bowl is an Edmonton institution. I remember being 15yrs old and in awe of the super cool UofA kids drinking fancy coffee's and smoking like it was their God givin' right! Well, times have changed... Smoking is gross, you can get a so-called latte at Tim's, but The SugarBowl is still crazy cool! Everything on the menu is Cafe standard stellar. Sugar Bowl is so close to a 5 star rating. The food is amazing. I had a vegetarian burger/sandwich of some kind with sweet potato fries (my token meal). My other half had the chilli and said it was delicious. The food is fantastic. I have two main complaints: The parking situation is horrendous. When I say horrible, I mean the worst possible parking situation ever imagined. The residential area close to Sugar Bowl is always packed (sardine packed) so there is no where to park on the residential road. There is no free parking anywhere because DPS Parking Service owns every lot. The sitting arrangement inside is horrible. The tables are too close together and there is no privacy. read more

The beer list (2 full pages) at this restaurant is out of this world! You can get anything from fruity beers to dark beer and I swear I would go just for the beer. The food was good as well, I tried the Mac and Cheese and although not as good as my mom's whole-made Tomato Mac & Cheese it was still very good. The atmosphere was was the kind of place your parents would say "this is where we went on our first date!" Seriously lacking in quality control! After one bad experience after another, I've decided that my last visit there will be exactly that...the last! Ordered mussels. They smelled strongly like a pig barn...no joke!! They did have bacon on them which wasn't stated in the menu (and I'm a pescatarian) but the bacon smell was BAD and it wasn't very cooked and had big chunks of raw fat on it...revolting. I let my husband taste the broth and he made a scrinchy face and said, "that's bad!" Then he smacked his tongue to the roof of his mouth a few times indicating a lingering bad taste and continued making the scrincy face. He said, "you can't eat that." Which I felt gave me permission to send it back (something I never do). Then, I ordered the salmon salad to replace it. It came and the salmon was raw (not mentioned in the menu) and some of the lettuce was wilty and slimy. I picked it out and left it on a little pile on the table. The server said nothing about it when I showed it to her when she asked if the salad was a better choice; she just gave me a blank stare. My husband liked his breakfast sandwich and clam chowder which he said had no clam in it or clam flavor. He said it was a good potato soup but clam...nowhere to be found. Service was average. Our server forgot to bring the lemon I asked for and our wait was fairly long. My husband and I both got to see one server's "bottom" on two separate occasions however, as her short skirt slid up as she bent over slightly to clean tables. Lucky us? In addition, parking is difficult to find and there's only one bathroom stall. Yeah...unless friends are going and I'm just along for the ride, I won't be back. read more

I love this place! They have a great outdoor patio, a large selection of beers and a great brunch! The only pitfall is that they fall short at greeting me at the door every time! The staff almost seemed trained to turn people away at the door when it's busy. Instead of actually looking around and carefully thinking what a realistic wait is by scouting the dishes and seeing what people are about to be done, they have a tendency to bark an hour and walk away. I love how local it is, and the decor is perfectly imperfect. The prices are good, cappuccinos are a bit to much $ but everything else seems to be priced well. Great staff.
