Food has been amazing every time we have ordered. The service has been great and the overall price has been well worth it.

I was heading out of town on a job late Monday evening and realized I hadn't eaten yet. I really wasn't in the mood for fast food, so after a quick search on the internet, I found Sukhothai Express 2 with some promising reviews. Located in a newer strip center on the growing edge of San Antonio, the restaurant had a steady stream of takeout customers coming and going when I arrived. I initially walked up to the register expecting to order to-go, but the staff quickly let me know they offered full table service for dine-in guests. The dining room was clean and nearly full despite the late hour. The atmosphere is simple and functional rather than upscale, with Thai music playing from a television displaying Thai programming, which added a nice authentic touch. I started with the spring rolls while looking over the menu and eventually settled on the red curry with a combination of proteins since I'm always a sucker for eggplant in Thai curry. The spring rolls arrived quickly. They weren't particularly impressive visually, and there was a bit more wrapper than filling, but they were crisp, fresh, and paired well with the dipping sauce. The red curry was the star of the meal. There was plenty of rich, flavorful curry, generous portions of chicken, beef, and shrimp, and just enough eggplant to keep me happy. I ordered it at a 3 out of 4 spice level, which was hot enough to make me break a sweat without overwhelming the dish. Service was friendly and reasonably attentive throughout the meal. The only minor inconvenience was that the restaurant has a single unisex restroom, which stayed occupied fairly often because of the constant flow of dine-in and takeout customers. Overall, this feels exactly like what the name promises--an excellent neighborhood Thai restaurant focused on serving quality food quickly rather than creating a special-occasion dining experience. It had been awhile since I had been here, and this time I made it out for the lunch specials. They have an extensive lunch menu, that also included Chinese dishes. Lunch specials were $9.99 and included tea, rice, and veggie egg roll. Craving noodles... I went for the Pad Thai and made it Thai hot spicy level. The Thai hot spicy was the perfect amount of heat. The noodle dish itself was just ok, it wasn't a pretty dish. The noodles and veggies were all cooked together in the same seasoning. I don't remember seeing the bean sprouts or tofu... it just all blended. It would have been nice to have some green onions vibrant in color semi cooked and bean sprouts uncooked. Egg roll had a nice crispy outer texture and the sweetened tea was good. Not sure I would order Pad Thai again. Good service read more

We have been to this location and few times and it gets better each time! We are always greeted and seated right away in the small dining area which has always been clean even when busy! The food is always quick to be served and always delicious! The jungle Fried Rice is one of the best fried rice dishes I've ever had! It's full of flavor cooked well and vegetarian!. The stir fried clams are also amazing but not on all of the menus! Another of pur faves is the satay chicken, perfectly cooked and the peanut sauce rocks! Definitely a small mom n pop shop that cranks out amazing food! We've never ordered to go or delivery cause it's right down the street but I'm sure it would be great! I suggest thai hot if you can handle some heat it makes everything taste amazing! read more

Check out the pictures to see what we ordered. I must say that this with the exception of the Taro Boba, everything was pretty good. My mom was impressed as well as she ordered the pad woonsen, and her favorite were the wings. My mom seriously could not stop talking about the wings. I thought they were okay, and they paired well with the sticky rice and papaya salad. My favorite thing about this place is that their online process makes it easy to customize the entrées. They have a lot of options to take certain things out that you don't want (such as me taking out the peanuts from the papaya salad!) And of course there are many spice levels to choose from. My complaint is their Boba because it was very watered down and tasted like artificial instant powder. So I absolutely cannot recommend this item. In fact, I recommend that you skip that entirely if you love Boba as much as I do. I got the pad see ew and they put beef in it instead of the chicken that I ordered online, but it still tasted good. First time eating at this location, staff was nice, but the restaurant could have been more clean (dirty floors, tables better kept clean), as we entered during lunch at around 11:30. But in all fairness it was busy with clientele. I've had great Thai food and I measured their flavors with that experience and I was not moved. This is very objective to other folks that may say it is the best thing they have ever tasted, palates are different. My wife could not finish the Pad Thai, stated the noodles tasted oily. I had the pepper steak with jasmine rice, felt it was under seasoned and a sweetness I didn't care for, the spring rolls were ok, but the sweet thai sauce tasted watered down, the Thai tea was ok as well, portion size didn't compliment the pricing. But different strokes for tasting, my opinion this was certainly not at the level I expected for Thai food, but you try it out for yourself. Again, the staff was genuinely very nice. read more

This three star review is based on my to go order today. There's a sign on the door say they have lunch specials and it says it comes with a vegetable roll and a tea. I place the order and I asked if it's sweet tea or regular tea and they said oh that a to go order doesn't come with a tea. it does not state that on the sign on the window for the lunch specials. They need to change the sign if they're not gonna give a Tea with the Order. Even though I expected the tea the gentleman at the counter did not offer it to me. That is not good customer service. I have been wanting to try this place and ordered take out for dinner. I ordered the Chicken Phad Thai with medium spice and it was just right. I also got a small order of Tom Yum soup combination of chicken and shrimp. We enjoyed our meal here, although the space is quite small they do have indoor seating. I think most people take it to go. The parking can be challenging but we were able to get a spot ok for lunch time. Service is good, fyi there is a 3.99% fee if you pay with credit or debit. My husband got the sweet and sour chicken, he liked it. I got the chicken satay, the chicken was flavorful but just a little in the dry side. Sick kiddos & it's Valentine's Day -- I'm craving Thai & my husband is on his toes to go grab me whatever I want. SWEET, I know. Though we've had food from this "franchise" before, it was our first time at this particular location. I wish I took pictures, but it was a GRAB and EAT day for me. We ordered 3 items (all classics, if you ask me) and the dishes were all BURSTING with flavor. 1. Drunken Noodles -- spice level: medium Flat noodles w/ veggies make me go YUM yum YUM. I loved that they had plenty of veggies packed in there and even the baby corn that wasn't fully soft and mushy gave the dish the "crunch" it needed. 2. PAPAYA SALAD. Spice level -- asked for medium, but I feel like it might have been hotter! Out of everything THAI, this is my OG dish. I am a fan of shrimp papaya salad, but we received salted crab in ours this time. Still so DELICIOUS. Crisp shredded green papaya, red HOT chilis, tomato on a lettuce leaf with bits of salted crab. My mouth was watering after every bite. ** chefs kiss 3. Pineapple fried rice -- spice level: medium I'm not a huge fan of pineapple (on anything, really) but this was surprisingly good! Hot pineapple chunks mixed in with fried rice, spring onions, and even raisins! Could easily be paired up with a curry or even inhaled on its own. The pad Thai (child's portion shown) fresh and hot, really tasty. The Thai dish pad pak was great also; heat options were medium, hot, or Thai hot. I chose medium, and it had a nice spice that enhanced the flavor. A large portion of freshly cooked veg and meat. A small restaurant, but busy enough when we were there. Also a steady stream of to go and DoorDash orders going out, but we still got our plates within 15 minutes. Very helpful staff, nice clean place, reasonably priced. Very clean restaurant with a quiet ambience. Most people order takeout but its a nice spot to sit down. Service is fast but not super attentive. They bring you food quickly, take order, but don't expect waiters to be refilling your cup. It's very casual. That being said the food is amazing and piping hot, full of flavor and always fresh. We love ordering the fried rice and sesame chicken to share among 2 people, the sampler for appetizer. The pad thai and Chinese Mongolian shrimp was delicious. I went to this place a few years ago and never went back because I found their noodle dishes mediocre and way too oily... HOWEVER, several years later, I decided to give this place another try. This time I ordered and appetizer and my favorite curry. I thought, "the curry should be the real test since that is what I typically order at Thai places." I was very satisfied with the Panang Curry! It was very delicious and a great portion. The good thing is, curry leftovers re-heat well. I also tried the Chicken Satay (ie, skewers). It was delicious and the dipping sauces were great. I recommend this place's curry and satay. The place needs some TLC. It feels like a location forgotten by time. I've gotten takeout from here a few times, and the quality of the food has mostly been mediocre and not great. I've tried a couple of their noodle dishes, some curries, and other random dishes. For any of their dishes, you can select the spice level ranging from medium to sukhothai hot. Their spice level is based on the Thai spice levels, which are elevated from the typical westernized spice levels that most of us are accustomed to. For example, their medium spice level is equivalent to a spicy level for most western palates. I always like to try the pad thai from Thai restaurants since that is a staple dish that can usually predict the quality of the rest of their menu items. Their pad thai is pretty tasty and has good flavor but is quite oily. Aside from the curries, which are coconut-based, I noticed that a good amount of grease/oil is leftover in the container/plate for a lot of their dishes. Most recently, I got two dishes: sesame chicken and eggplant with basil. There was a huge portion of sesame chicken, but the bigger pieces of chicken were tough and dry--probably because they do use white meat chicken. The coating of the sesame chicken was also a bit soggy and thick instead of being crispy and lightly coated. The big disappointment of meal was the eggplant with basil. There were only a handful of eggplant pieces, with the majority of the dish being tofu and green bell peppers. I wouldn't have minded this ratio if the dish hadn't been advertised as EGGPLANT with basil. The tofu was supposed to be an add-on, not the main ingredient. read more

We had a very underwhelming experience here. I don't know if the Friday night rush got the better of them, but more than a few balls were dropped during our visit. We arrived around 7pm on Friday night and were seated right away. We're not a large family (I mean we're tall), but the booth we sat in seemed built only for 2 people. There was just no elbow room to sit comfortably, but there were no open table for us to switch to, either, so we dealt with it. There's no social distancing, so if you're not vaccinated or are still uncomfortable with being within six feet of others you may want to keep that in mind. My kids ordered the crispy pork fried rice and the eggplant and basil. I ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp (medium spice) and my hubby ordered the shrimp pad thai with thai spice (very hot). We also ordered tom yum soups as an appetizer. After 15 minutes of waiting we asked about our tom yum because, again, we wanted to eat it as an appetizer. The young lady helping said she'd ask about it, but never returned to bring it. The man who took our orders came back, but only to tell us that they no longer had eggplant, so my daughter would have to pick something else. She went with the same thing as her brother. Our tom yum soup came out about 10 minutes later, quickly followed by our entrees, so that teeny-tiny table and space just got even smaller. We were left trying rearrange hot food with hot soup and the whole thing was just a mess. When I tasted my food, I realized they made my dish the spice level my husband requested and vice versa. I love spicy food, but this was too over the top for me. I took a two bites, a LOT of gulps of thai tea, and told the waiter that the kitchen switched our spice levels. For my husband, he offered to bring out some chili flakes. For me, he took my plate back to have it remade. It came back much better, but he forgot my husband's chili. He actually gave it to another table. When we reminded him he brought back a bowl. But now I had no eating utensils because they took it back with the old plate and forgot to bring me a new set. So, we had to get up to ask for those too. The food wasn't worth all of the drama, up and down, and flagging down waitstaff to get it. It especially wasn't worth the 20 minute drive to get there. Halfway through our meal my friend jumps from her seat and this brown thing launches from her plate into the air. It was a ROACH. Trapped under her pad Thai until her fork moved that clump of noodles. We told a man at the register and he seemed to not want to deal with it. We waiting all standing at the table while it walked around the plate. Reason for one star is how they handled it also: the woman who finally came seemed disappointed we didn't want to pay then said "well this is an old building and when it's cold they like to come in here. Very good Thai food. I always get the Pad Thai to see if I like a new location. I ordered the fresh shrimp rolls and Medium Heat Pork Pad Thai. It was flavorful, and the heat was perfect, it was not greasy. One order was more than enough to feed 2 people. The staff was friendly and professional. Few things in life please me more than sitting in a contoured laminate booth that's bolted to the wall. This place has some, and they have some killer soups too. I've only tried the Tum Kha and and a couple of curries, but they were all magically delicious. It's kinda like a little Thai dive nooked in a cranny between a pawn shop and a tattoo parlor. Only about half the size of a living room, they squeeze some big flavors into this joint, and there's heat too. Sukhothai can melt your face off, so be careful not to venture beyond the recommended spice-levels, a mistake I won't make again. read more

We've been here twice. The food is very good. I've gotten the shrimp fried rice. The prices are decent, around $10.00 or more. I'm not sure how much the shrimp fried rice was. There was a lot of medium size shrimp in the shrimp fried rice at least ten. The service was okay the last time we went. It seemed like the waitress had other things on her mind. The first time it was better. We had a very good waiter, who was more attentive. The restaurant has fish tanks in it. It has a comfortable setting. It's good for families or by yourself. High chairs, I am not sure if they have them. The restaurant is hard to see from the street. If you see Big Lots, it's near there. Lots of parking. I think it is closed on Tuesday. I could be wrong.
