Sumi took a risk, left Schwartz's after 15 + years, and in April, opended this little gem of a place in Scarborough. Many thanks to the super friendly owners, Sumi and his wife, for the wonderful hospitality when we were here. The boyfriend dared to say this was even better than Schwartz's. Visiting from out of town, and I was told I had to try the generically named "smoked meat." The closest description I was given was that it was similar to Katz's deli in NYC, so I definitely went in with a certain set of expectations. The setting is extremely casual (run of the mill cheap lunch setting), and if it weren't for the recommendation, I would have expected much less from the food. I ordered the sandwich, and while the meat was delicious, I thought the bread left something to be desired - sure, it's only white bread, but just seemed to be a missed opportunity for something great. Who would have thought GTA's best Montreal smoked meat would be on the border of Scarborough and Markham. Got the smoked brisket sandwich, Meat was moist and juicy. I was looking for a quick lunch the other day and noticed *SMOKED MEAT* while scrolling thru Yelp. Immediately I drove over and ordered a small platter of smoked meat. The owners/employees were all very nice and appreciated all the business that walked thru the door given that they're still in soft opening stage The smoked meat was very tender and melts in your mouth for the most part :), I agree with others that the beard is a little underwhelming in comparison to the quality of the meat. One more thing I want to add is that they only have regular yellow mustard, while eating smoked meat I do enjoy the spicy mustard that they have at other places. Portion size is decent. You would def want more so if you are a meat lover like me then go for the small or large plate with have bigger portion of meat and comes with bread so you can make your own sandwich. Home cut rustic fries were a great side to have. Pickle was very juicy and flavourful and goes great with the richness of meat. Slaw was different more vinegar based. I prefer more creamy slaw so not my Fav. Having a Halal Smoked meat shop in Toronto was a dream for a long time. It's worth the trip if you are not in the east end. Here's a visual for you, imagine you are packing for a 2 week long vacation and you're trying to fit your entire wardrobe into your suitcase. Now you're having trouble closing your suitcase. I only order the fatty which is why I only drop by only once a month. He has been tweaking his recipe since he opened and it tastes like 90%+ of the real stuff from Montreal. Wow! Amazing smoked meat sandwiches and super friendly staff. The portions were very generous and they were all very yummy. The smoked meat itself had a great ratio between fat and lean, well spiced, and not salty. They were also hand cut, which makes them even more flavourful. I was in Montreal and had Reubens and honestly thought it wasn't as good as that time I was at sumilicious in Scarborough (price taken in consideration, it really hurt my wallet and the food was good but did not live up to its legendary status), they just have a special sauce is all. 90g+ of FAT in one sandwich!! A friend got takeout for us the other night - 2 smoked meat sandwiches. It looked and smelled great, but when I bit into mine, there was a big piece of squishy fat. Ew! I opened the sandwich and there were entire slices of just fat, with no meat attached. I sorted through it all and removed all of the big chunks, leaving some of the smaller pieces attached to meat. While the meat was tender and flavorful, I couldn't get over the big hunks of fat, so I weighed it. It came to exactly 90g! If you add the piece I ate and what was attached to meat, it must have been 100g+. It's extremely unhealthy and unnecessary to be eating that much saturated fat in one meal. I'm not the first reviewer to mention this, but apparently the owners are okay serving it. I asked my friend if he had requested fatty or lean, and he said he just ordered two sandwiches. This is by no means my first deli sandwich, but it's my first with whole slices of fat. Guess if the restaurant puts it in the garbage, they lose money instead of me. I realize you don't eat smoked meat sandwiches to be healthy, but to who care about what you eat, beware! It is the closest I have ever had to Schwartz. I would agree with Yelp review on fries need to be ordered extra crispy, I did this & thought they were great! The gravy in the poutine was simply amazing. Next time I will ask for the smoked meat to be cut from a brisket right out of the steamer to get an even better eating experience. I'm a Montrealer born and raised. Moved to T.O. many years ago. Sumi has the ONLY authentic old-fashioned smoked meat sandwich in the GTA. As good as Schwartz! The meat is old-fashioned, flaky, very tender, spicy and with "good melty fat" in the meat that makes the sandwich delectable. You cannot get that here in T.O. unless you go to Sumi's. On the side, I had fresh cut fries and a can of Cott's Black Cherry! I felt like I was sitting at Schwartz today! I recommend 100% if you need your Montreal smoked meat fix. I never thought I would see old fashioned smoked meat as good or better than Schwartz in the GTA! Unbelievable sandwich! If you like Centre Street Deli ... the sandwich at Sumi blows it away! If you're craving for some montreal smoke meat and don't want to go all the way to Montreal, Sumilicious is definitely a place to try. Located in the old tnt plaza at middlefield and steeles is sumilicious. Entrance is a little tricky as it is not connected from the parking lot. You would have to walk around the front of the plaza in order to get in. Went in on a saturday afternoon and it wasn't crazy busy. We just wanted to try the signature smoked meat sandwich. The order itself was pretty hefty in meat portion (similar to schawartz). It is sauced with some mustard and then they cut the meat up piling it ontop of a nice soft rye bread. The sandwich itself is under 10$ (similar to schawartz in montreal). The owner itself said he used to work at schawartz so he knows the ins and outs of the taste. Overall it is a nice fast food joint to have in the scarb area if you're craving for a good smoke meat sandwich! Bonus also, i didn't find the meat overly dry or salty! read more
