There are 4 flavors to choose from -- Upcountry Guava, Spicy Maui Onion, Maui Mango, & Lilikoi Tropix. The Upcountry Guava is delicious, but my absolute favorite is the Lilikoi Tropix. So, so good. I first tried these bad boys at Maui Brewer Festival and they are amazing. At it's core, they are savory delicious hot dogs flavored with sauces, and baked into rolls. But they are amazing. Each flavor unique and perfectly balanced to showcase the sauce while remaining a delicious hot dog at it's core. My favorite is the Spicy Onion and the Upcountry Guava flavors. They are portable, clean to eat, and pair well with a nice coconut porter. The only hard part is getting to them when they are open and before they sell out. We decided to grab a quick lunch on our way to Maui Ocean Institute. This truck just like all the Maui. Food trucks are crazy hard to find. Luckily on the day we were headed to the Ocean Institute they were at stationed at the large intersection where the 2 highways intersect. The setup is similar to Puka Dog in Waikiki BUT much better. The Spicy Maui onion sauce and the guava sauce that topped the dogs were solid! I am nothing usually a fan of sweet toppings on my wiener (no homo) but this guava sauce was the exception. We found Sumo Dogs at the Maui Swap Meet just a few hours before making our way back home to CA. My hubby brought me here despite his lack of interest in tropically-flavored hot dogs. Quite frankly, he's a ketchup and mustard guy so we searched this place out just for me. They've got some interesting combinations which include guava, coconut, pineapple, lilikoi -- Hawaii basics. Just like a similar hotdog spot on Oahu, the bread is soft and pillowy, while the dog itself was huge, and a had a great savory bite. I got myself the guava one, and hubby, in true fashion, got a plain ketchup and mustard. Though the combo was unique, it was heavy on the sweet side, like the other elements such as the mustard or garlic sauce didn't come through as well. I wanted a plain ketchup/mustard dog but they don't make that. So this 10-incher-or-so plain beef dog is wrapped in a sweet bread bun and filled with lilikoi sauce, open at the top, closed at the bottom, making for a very clean eating experience. While I don't care for sweet condiments, I stomached it. TIP: The other selections also came lined with sweet sauces like guava. Totally awesome food truck. Tried for the first time at Kihei first Friday. We tried the maui mango and lilikoi tropix...both onolicious. Our daughter also loved the sweet buns they use. On our way this afternoon to see their new wagon in Kihei to try the upcountry guava and spicy Maui onion for lunch. The wait, about 5 minutes per dog, was a little long, and hoping that wasn't normal, especially with no other customers waiting, but well worth it. I think that sausage was too big for the bun!
