Great name, great food!! We tried six different bao buns and tots loaded with kalua pork, pickled onions, pineapple salsa and magic! Everything was delicious! The packaging is earth conscience, and it stayed fresh on the 10 minute drive back to the condo. A definite must try and repeat! Oh!! And the service was kind and efficient :)
I've a t-shirt with this spots name so you know I gotta try it out! And ooooo the variety! I wanted to try one of each lol. They were super friendly and was super helpful with our order! The bao buns were yummy and filling. I ate 5 of them . They did have dessert bao buns that I was tempted to buy but I was nice and didn't . Will definitely be back for their dessert menu! Almost forgot to mention the buns we got!! we tried the bao chicka bao bao (this was really good and the chicken was great!), uncle Philly (this was my fav!!!) and crispy shrimp (this had a monster size shrimp and was nicely fried) This is located in a food truck area so they have benches to sit and eat at and there will be chickens running around the area .

The Bao Chicka Bao Bao was also very delicious, flavorful, and crunchy. The Hurricane Tots were good, but they didn't quite blow me away compared to the baos. Everything we tried was really tasty, and honestly, I wanted to eat way more baos but had to control myself. I would definitely recommend this spot for a great snack, or if you're making a meal out of it, be sure to order a few extra baos. It's a must-try when you're checking out the food trucks in Maui
Super solid choice for food in Kihei. Located in the food truck park right by Azeka shopping center. The buns are tasty and fresh. The shrimp bun was by far our favorite. The tofu bowl was "super fire" according to the person that got it. The pork belly bowl was good, but not my personal favorite. The pork was a bit too sweet for my liking (but it wasn't my main meal, so I was ok). The guys running the trick were super nice and asked us to let them know if anything was off. They have a kiosk to order which is helpful on busier days. Actually many of the food trucks now have a kiosk ordering available. The bathrooms are clean (if you get there early enough), and the tables are communal. Just a reminder, don't feed the chickens!

Let me just say, Suns Out, Buns Out was consistently good on both days (back-to-back) that we were able to get it. Here's what we tried, how we rated it, and what we thought: Day 1: Bao Chicka Bao Bao with Truffle Tater Tots--5/5. As someone who usually doesn't eat or care for slaw, I have to admit the slaw paired perfectly with the buffalo chicken. The spice and juices from the buffalo sauce complemented the fluffy and light bao bun without overpowering it. The truffle tater tots were an excellent side edition for an additional $4, but they were perfectly crisp with no soggy tots in sight, which we truly appreciated! Day 2: Bao Buns Trio with Truffle Tater Tots--5/5. We ordered two Bao Chicka Bao buns and one Crispy Shrimp Bao Bun which was really the star of the show! The tropical salsa and sweet chili mayo was AMAZING! The salsa was fresh and the mayo gave us a sweet and spicy kick which was perfectly balanced!
Yummmmmmmmmyyyyyy...the most amazing bao buns I've ever had and to make it all the better they are stunning when you grab the vivid purple Ube ones. My favourite was the pork filling with crunchy and acidic pickled veggies. They have quick service and are made of exceptional quality. Who doesn't love some soft bread with amazing fillings and the Hawaiian sun shining on them?
I stopped by here yesterday for lunch. Sun's Out Buns Out is located in a food truck pod, so I did not realize exactly where I was going until I saw all of the trucks. The truck itself is fun, painted with bright tropical colors and scenes, and they seem to be known for their loaded tots and bao buns. I placed my order on the touchscreen outside and then sat down to wait for my food. For lunch on this day I went with the buffalo chicken tots and the Island Piggy bao. The menu described the bao as kalua pork, BBQ sauce, tropical salsa, and pickled red onions. The buffalo chicken tots were described as buttermilk fried chicken, buffalo sauce, jack cheddar cheese, house made pickles, and ranch dressing. It took less than 10 minutes for my food to be ready and I sat down at one of the shaded picnic tables. When I opened everything up it all looked good, but I did notice that the tots were missing the house made pickles. I started with the bao and thought it was pretty good. The kalua pork was super juicy and the bao bun was light and fluffy while still holding together well. The pickled onions added a nice acidity and the tropical salsa brought good flavor. The only thing I did not notice much was the BBQ sauce. After that I dug into the tots. The tots themselves were cooked nicely with a crispy outside and soft inside. The chicken was good as well with a nice batter and the buffalo sauce added flavor while the cheese was gooey. The only thing worth noting is that the chicken was softer than expected and not very crispy. It worked since I did have the texture from the crispy tots, but it stood out. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I would probably not order both a bao and tots again as it was a lot of food, but I would definitely come back for one or the other. read more

Suns Out Buns Out is a must stop food truck with seriously unique flavors. The bao are perfectly soft and pillowy, and everything we tried was packed with flavor. The spam brussel sprouts were amazing and such a fun, unexpected combo. Our absolute favorites were the ahi bao and the pork tots, both were standout, crave worthy dishes. We visited last May, so some of the items were seasonal, which just makes it even more exciting to go back and see what's new. Great service, great vibes, and really creative food. If you see this truck, do not skip it. read more

I went at 5PM on a Tuesday, it wasnt busy at all. You can order on a tablet and they will text you once your order is ready. I tried the crispy shrimp Bao. The crispness was on point. Flavor was 10/10. The pineapple added perfect amount of sweetness. Honestly I wish I got more than one. read more

By far the most unique and fun food truck in this lot. ALSO - my wife is allergic to pork and she was able to substitute! Good portion sizes, especially the tots. (Forgot the names but) We got the Duck/Goat Cheese, Bbq Pork, and the ube(sub tofu), plus the fried chicken tots. Excellent combo! Would recommend if you're looking for something new(and delicious). My husband and I stopped by Suns Out Buns Out for dinner and tried a few dishes during a food tasting. We ordered the Bao Buns Trio (Little Piggy, Island Piggy, Duck Duck Goat) and the Buffalo Chicken Tots. The bao buns are always a highlight for me--the soft, fluffy texture is spot on, and the Little Piggy remains our favorite. The Island Piggy was nice but could've used a bit more flavor to really stand out. Unfortunately, the Duck Duck Goat was my least favorite; it wasn't quite what I expected and left me underwhelmed. The Buffalo Chicken Tots had great crispy texture, but they could've used more buffalo sauce. They felt a bit dry and underdressed for my taste. For these two dishes, plus tax and an 18% tip, the total came close to $50, which felt a bit steep. The service also took a little longer than I expected, but overall, the experience was good. read more

Hubs got two kalua pig baos, he could barely finish them. Truffle tots with Parmesan was ok, their only sides were tots. But great tastes, fresh ingredients and combinations! My bf saw the ice cream baos, and just had to have one. And I saw tots, and just had to have some. So, I got Just a Side of Tots and and ube Ice Cream Bao with toasted coconut, and my bf got the vanilla Ice Cream Bao with chocolate sauce. Of course, tots were good; nice and crispy. And the Ice Cream Baos were delicious. The texture of the bao buns were good, and went well with the ice cream. And my bf saw some t-shirts they were selling, and he just couldn't leave without a "Suns Out Buns Out" t-shirt. read more

Friendly and easy service; cash and card accepted. This food truck area has designated picnic bench area and porta potty. For light eaters, 3 bao buns were fulfilled my appetite while also trying different flavors. Ask for recommendations if you're having trouble choosing! The kalua pork and the confit duck were delicious; the ube bao is your standard bao bun with glazed pork belly. read more

Nice buns - Quick buns - Tasty buns Can't go wrong with pork buns. Not my favorite ever but was a nice snack. Recommended by a local friend, it's a cool food truck spot with lots of options. With a name suns out buns out how could I skip it? I ordered the little piggy and the crispy shrimp. Little piggy was okay, they say it's their most popular but the flavor was lacking. However I did enjoy the crispy shrimp a lot. The shrimp was good quality so don't skip it! I would recommend getting three instead of two. read more

Delicious buns all around. We got the bun trio - Sticky Icky Chicken, Little Piggy, and Island Piggy. All had distinct flavors, but our favorite was the Island Piggy, by far. Pork and mango is a great combination! Highly recommend trying the Island Piggy. Little Piggy had a lot of flavors all at once. For the price, it is worth getting the trio to get most bang for buck. read more

I was so glad to come across this location just down the street from our stay. Such a cool spot with the food trucks all around and nice covered seating. Suns out Buns out was a spot I had heard about and my wife loves bao buns. We only have one spot near us at home so this was a cool spot to check out. Our daughter loved the spot since there was so much going on. The woman was friendly and greeted us, she was patient in answering a couple questions as I decided what to order. Made sure we had everything we needed when we picked up our order too. I love the how these are similar to tacos, but a super soft fluffy bao instead. The little piggy on the ube was so good and the color is great. The bit of sweet and tang on the pork was really nice and the bit of crunch from the veg was nice contrast. The bao chicka bao bao is a fun play on words and delicious. Fried chicken was filling, crunchy with a tiny kick, the pickles wrapped it up nicely. Between the three of us though, we all thought the crispy shrimp was the best. The crunch of the breading, sweetness of the coconut and mango, and the bit of spice from the sauce and the pepper was so good. It was perfectly balanced with the texture and the flavor. read more
