I stopped by here yesterday for lunch. Sun's Out Buns Out is located in a food truck pod, so I did not realize exactly where I was going until I saw all of the trucks. The truck itself is fun, painted with bright tropical colors and scenes, and they seem to be known for their loaded tots and bao buns. I placed my order on the touchscreen outside and then sat down to wait for my food. For lunch on this day I went with the buffalo chicken tots and the Island Piggy bao. The menu described the bao as kalua pork, BBQ sauce, tropical salsa, and pickled red onions. The buffalo chicken tots were described as buttermilk fried chicken, buffalo sauce, jack cheddar cheese, house made pickles, and ranch dressing. It took less than 10 minutes for my food to be ready and I sat down at one of the shaded picnic tables. When I opened everything up it all looked good, but I did notice that the tots were missing the house made pickles. I started with the bao and thought it was pretty good. The kalua pork was super juicy and the bao bun was light and fluffy while still holding together well. The pickled onions added a nice acidity and the tropical salsa brought good flavor. The only thing I did not notice much was the BBQ sauce. After that I dug into the tots. The tots themselves were cooked nicely with a crispy outside and soft inside. The chicken was good as well with a nice batter and the buffalo sauce added flavor while the cheese was gooey. The only thing worth noting is that the chicken was softer than expected and not very crispy. It worked since I did have the texture from the crispy tots, but it stood out. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I would probably not order both a bao and tots again as it was a lot of food, but I would definitely come back for one or the other. read more

One of the better food trucks in the Maui Food Truck court. Bao Bun Sandwiches is definitely my jam so I was happy to try this place out. We came here twice and I got the 3 bao slider combo each time. - The BAO*CHICKA*BAO*BAO was one of my favorite sandwiches. - My second favorite was the ISLAND PIGGY. I got this both times. - the LITTLE PIGGY was good, but a little overhyped in my opinion. But good to try. - the DUCK DUCK GOAT was wildly disappointing. As you can see in the picture, all meat and almost nothing else. Maybe a few silvers of cabbage. But where's the goat cheese and the fig jam?!? We also got the ALOHA TOTS. Huge portion so that was nice. But the kalua pork was pretty watery and made the crispy tots go soggy pretty fast. Overall a solid spot. Definitely worth trying at least once. read more

Suns Out Buns Out is a must stop food truck with seriously unique flavors. The bao are perfectly soft and pillowy, and everything we tried was packed with flavor. The spam brussel sprouts were amazing and such a fun, unexpected combo. Our absolute favorites were the ahi bao and the pork tots, both were standout, crave worthy dishes. We visited last May, so some of the items were seasonal, which just makes it even more exciting to go back and see what's new. Great service, great vibes, and really creative food. If you see this truck, do not skip it. read more

Food: 4 Service: 4 Ambiance: 4 t was a perfect Maui day, and we decided to head over to the food truck area. Buns Out Suns Out was already on my list, so I was really excited to finally try it. We came a little after the lunch rush, and there was no line at all, which was a nice bonus. We ended up ordering the Little Piggy Bao, the Bao Chicka Bao Bao, and the Hurricane Tots. I absolutely loved the Little Piggy Bao, especially the ube bun. The pork belly was cooked to perfection and paired so well with the slightly sweet ube bread. The Bao Chicka Bao Bao was also very delicious, flavorful, and crunchy. The Hurricane Tots were good, but they didn't quite blow me away compared to the baos. Everything we tried was really tasty, and honestly, I wanted to eat way more baos but had to control myself. I would definitely recommend this spot for a great snack, or if you're making a meal out of it, be sure to order a few extra baos. I've a t-shirt with this spots name so you know I gotta try it out! And ooooo the variety! I wanted to try one of each lol. They were super friendly and was super helpful with our order! The bao buns were yummy and filling. I ate 5 of them . They did have dessert bao buns that I was tempted to buy but I was nice and didn't . Will definitely be back for their dessert menu! Super solid choice for food in Kihei. Located in the food truck park right by Azeka shopping center. The buns are tasty and fresh. The shrimp bun was by far our favorite. The tofu bowl was "super fire" according to the person that got it. The pork belly bowl was good, but not my personal favorite. The pork was a bit too sweet for my liking (but it wasn't my main meal, so I was ok). The guys running the trick were super nice and asked us to let them know if anything was off. They have a kiosk to order which is helpful on busier days. Actually many of the food trucks now have a kiosk ordering available. The bathrooms are clean (if you get there early enough), and the tables are communal. Just a reminder, don't feed the chickens! read more

Suns Out Buns Out is the definition of Maui chill with a colorful food truck, shady pavilions with string lights, and bao buns so good you forget you are sitting on gravel instead of at a five star restaurant. I went for the Bao Bun Trio so I could taste a little bit of everything. The Island Piggy hit all the comfort notes with tender kalua pork, sweet BBQ sauce, and just enough crunch from the slaw. I'm almost embarrassed to say, at 68 years old, I've never had a BAO in a "sandwich" form...plenty of stuffed buns though. I read the reviews of the Suns Out Buns Out (food truck near Costco) and decided to give it a try. The trio plate is an incredible bargain! I selected the: Icky sticky BAO BAO Pork Belly Kahlua pork ...as my 3, and each one had awesome flavor - 5 star rating all the way! I even went back for another Icky sticky BAO BAO! Let me just say, Suns Out, Buns Out was consistently good on both days (back-to-back) that we were able to get it. Here's what we tried, how we rated it, and what we thought: Day 1: Bao Chicka Bao Bao with Truffle Tater Tots--5/5. As someone who usually doesn't eat or care for slaw, I have to admit the slaw paired perfectly with the buffalo chicken. The spice and juices from the buffalo sauce complemented the fluffy and light bao bun without overpowering it. The truffle tater tots were an excellent side edition for an additional $4, but they were perfectly crisp with no soggy tots in sight, which we truly appreciated! Day 2: Bao Buns Trio with Truffle Tater Tots--5/5. We ordered two Bao Chicka Bao buns and one Crispy Shrimp Bao Bun which was really the star of the show! The tropical salsa and sweet chili mayo was AMAZING! The salsa was fresh and the mayo gave us a sweet and spicy kick which was perfectly balanced! read more

My husband and I stopped by Suns Out Buns Out for dinner and tried a few dishes during a food tasting. We ordered the Bao Buns Trio (Little Piggy, Island Piggy, Duck Duck Goat) and the Buffalo Chicken Tots. The bao buns are always a highlight for me--the soft, fluffy texture is spot on, and the Little Piggy remains our favorite. The Island Piggy was nice but could've used a bit more flavor to really stand out. Unfortunately, the Duck Duck Goat was my least favorite; it wasn't quite what I expected and left me underwhelmed. The Buffalo Chicken Tots had great crispy texture, but they could've used more buffalo sauce. They felt a bit dry and underdressed for my taste. For these two dishes, plus tax and an 18% tip, the total came close to $50, which felt a bit steep. The service also took a little longer than I expected, but overall, the experience was good. read more

For light eaters, 3 bao buns were fulfilled my appetite while also trying different flavors. Ask for recommendations if you're having trouble choosing! Nice buns - Quick buns - Tasty buns Can't go wrong with pork buns. Not my favorite ever but was a nice snack. Recommended by a local friend, it's a cool food truck spot with lots of options. With a name suns out buns out how could I skip it? I ordered the little piggy and the crispy shrimp. Little piggy was okay, they say it's their most popular but the flavor was lacking. Established in 2022.

Chef TJ moved to Maui from Virginia in 2021 and brought with him over 25 years of culinary experience. While getting to know and greatly enjoying Maui’s food scene, he realized it lacked a food truck that fused Mainland comfort foods with the bao buns that are so prevalent in Hawaii. He spent his days off daydreaming in the sun of all the possibilities and eventually Suns Out Buns Out was born! We had the smoked maminha tri-tip steak, Okinawa purple sweet potato, grilled maui onion and broccolini. Beautifully plated on real plates and silverware. No comparison to the so many common $21 food truck entrees and cost just a little more. The owner also is very sociable and enjoys talking about this food in a variety of languages with passers by and customers. On the far end from main entrance to the Kihei Food Oasis, or right at the other entrance, depending on how you enter. I wish we had found it earlier or we would have eaten there more than once!

lilikoi meringue tart ($10) - perfect tart to me actually…read more - usually sour flavors like these tend to be too sweet as the baker attempts to compensate the sourness, but that highkey backfires because when the dessert is too sweet and sour i end up hating it - this one however was just right; not too sweet and it's got just enough crust to pair with the lilikoi braised beef loco moco - an elevated take on loco moco that made me realize a simple dish can actually be impressive - the immaculate presentation was one thing but the flavor and texture exceeded my expectations for how a loco moco can taste - the crispy rice was nicely charred; not too burnt; usually charred items taste overdone and burnt but this had a nice note to it; wish it was crispier though but it might be because we were waiting for ages for the rest of the dish - braised beef was extremely tender - sauce was great but i wish it was a bit thicker and less liquidy - the pickled veggies were pretty well made too; they were lacking some kick and brightening flavor but the quality is there shrimp kauai - the shrimp was so juicy and the sauce well done; so fresh it was naturally sweet - the head was golden too, filled with natural sweetness -flavor on point; i had nothing else to say about this dish other than it was near perfect - same comment on the pickled veggies here as above rating: 4.5/5 - every dish was well done; not perfect and can improve but i was already well satisfied - the flavor, texture, and portion made the meal so worth... probably the most affordable food we've had on this island given the quality and care they put into each dish - it operates as a food truck within this zen buddha looking garden - very cute at night with fairy lights, plants, and other decor - highly recommend - service was kind and friendly but it took a long while for the food to be ready; makes sense though given how elaborate their dishes looked! The trucks that were there were when we visited were: Sol Brothers BBQ Suns Out Buns out (bao bun sandwiches) Vidad's (local plates, acai bowls) Maui Shrimp Maui Burgers Da Nani Pirates (fish tacos, local, sliders) Kracken Coffee Aloha Tai Fuson Z4 Grill (Teppanyaki, local food) Mexican Food truck K'Alale (breakfast, Mexican, pasta) Yummy Maui (sushi) Shaved Ice Most trucks you order on the electronic kiosk and they'll call your name when it's done. There are several (maybe 6?) covered areas with numerous tables and chairs, so ample seating is available. I saw a lot of complaints of dirty tables from bird poop. We had no problem with the tables. They were all clean. However there ARE a ton of birds and chickens, so except them to join you for lunch and and run around your feet and below the tables, waiting for you to drop food. One annoyance was only a few places have a kids menu, and was limited to hot dogs, grilled cheese, and cheese burgers (depending on what trucks are there). I do suggest you look up each individual food truck on yelp to see their menus and food pictures. This page doesn't give the greatest insight on that. A solid 4 star spot for lunch! Other than that the Kalua Pig Pot Stickers, Charred Octopus, Crab Cakes and Blackened Ahi are the starters I rotate through. For my Main, I am less eclectic. I have a hard time getting away from the Diver Scallops and Scampi. I have tried other dishes, the Abalone, Kona Lobster and Ribeye (I know, I know, who orders steak in a seafood restaurant), but I keep coming back to. For Dessert, I am also in a rut, but I love desserts they set on fire and in this case it is Bananas Foster. I do sneak bites off my DW's Creme Brulee, as does off my BF.
