What a delight! I had been wanting some great Ramen since we got back to the states from Thailand and this hit the spot. I tried the veggie Ramen spicy however the tofu they offer is not firm so I did not prefer the tofu. I like my tofu burnt if I am eating it, not soft. This was my go-to place for ramen. The space is super cute and cozy. I love the sign that tells you the "proper" way to eat ramen. They have a lot of tasty and authentic Japanese dishes here which is always fun to find. For appetizers, I like the takoyaki and seaweed salad. I usually order the tonkotsu classic ramen (which isn't as rich as I want, but pretty close to what I like). This time on a visit with my mom I decided to try the tonkotsu miso ramen and she got the chicken miso ramen. While service was prompt on this visit, they didn't get our orders right. My mom doesn't eat pork and thankfully they took the ramen back to get her the right dish. It looks like they gave me the spicy miso ramen, when I wanted the tonkotsu miso ramen. I asked twice if this was the correct order and they told me it was. At the bottom was a red spicy paste. While it wasn't too spicy for me, I remembered the photo of the tonkotsu miso ramen not being a red broth. So warning that it might be spicy for those who don't like spicy? Unfortunately, neither of us were big fans of our orders. It felt like the quality has gone down since I've been here. Maybe it had something to do with the holiday season. I've not had the best luck with ramen in RVA, but this has been my favorite so far. I went on a Monday night and they were pretty packed (it's a small spot), but we were still seated immediately. Our server was nice, but they forgot my order almost immediately and couldn't recall it as they were repeating back. They also forgot about one of our apps and it didn't come until we asked about it. The restaurant was a little messy. There were multiple places with napkins and papers balled up on the floor, things that would've taken a few seconds to pick up, just no one had bothered to. The ramen was so good, I got the Miso and my partner got the Tonkatsu. The broths were rich and flavorful, the meats were tender. The portion was on the small side though, which made the price seem too high for what they're giving. It's about $15 and I think I got maybe 3 bites of noodles. We also tried the chicken wings in spicy soy. Some of the smaller wings were way too hard and dry, but the meatier ones were perfect. So confused by all the good reviews. Maybe because there's a lack of Japanese restaurants in RVA there's not much to compare to locally? I ordered the karaage don and it was like eating overcooked popcorn chicken slathered with sauce that was overpowering. I asked initially if oyakodon (a staple for most Japanese restaurants) was an option since they have egg and chicken and they didn't know what it was Husband got the shoyu ramen and it was so watered down. One of the best ramen spots in the area. All the dishes are so flavorful. The karaage is perfectly fried and I love the hint of citrus in the sauce. They're very generous with the sauce in the age dashi tofu and don't let the color fool you, it's not too salty. You can't go wrong with any of the ramen dishes. The noodles were inconsistent though - some had traditional ramen noodles and others had thin egg noodles. The katsu curry was really good but they must have prepared the rest of the dish way before the pork finished frying because the curry was cold. My 14 year old son and I drove from Mechanicsville to try their ramen and traditional Japanese curry with beef. It was worth the 20 minute drive. The tables were busy at 7:30pm on a Friday, but we were able to sit at the bar. I would recommend either the Kirin Light or Sapporo beer on tap. After a warm afternoon, it was really refreshing! The edamame was excellent and my 14-year old son devoured the gyoza pieces. I enjoyed the Japanese curry with beef and rice (definitely a classic comfort food dish - especially with Kirin beer). My son got the Tonkotsu classic ramen, but he though it was a bit too salty. I might stay away from this dish if you prefer less sodium. This is probably the best ramen you can get in the henrico area. Good Ramen places are very scarce in the henrico area but I do enjoy Takara Ramen enough to come back. While I've had other ramen places in NOVA that are much better in price and taste, Takara is one of the only places in the henrico area that sells ramen and is pretty decent. The Service is quick and friendly. Waiter immediately greeted us and checked up on us in good intervals. The interior is cutely decorated like a ramen stand and I enjoy the atmosphere inside. I was traveling on business and looking for some good ramen. I found Tamara on Yelp and it had good reviews and was close. I already knew what I was getting when I walked in the door, Gyoza and Tonkotsu. A lot of times, the Gyoza is over fried but in this case, it was done perfectly. My Tonkotsu has really good flavor. I added some chili oil and started eating all the goodness. Service was good. This is a small location and they take really good care of you. I was recently in the area for training and saw that this restaurant had good reviews. As a side note, I have Japanese heritage and have lived and spent a fair amount of time in Japan; accordingly, I am reluctant to try Japanese restaurants in areas without a large Japanese diaspora/business population as it is rarely authentic. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by Takara. I ordered the takoyaki as a starter, pretty authentic tasting except for its presentation atop some shredded cabbage. I ordered the Tonkotsu miso flavored ramen, a typical ramen style in Japan. The flavor was pretty good, although I have to critique them on the pork - it was way overdone for Ramen. Normally it should be very tender and fall of your chopsticks - but not the case. Other than that, it was good for the price. I recommend this place if you have never tried Japanese style ramen, or Japanese "izakaya (a Japanese pub)" style food and are curious about it. Definitely worth a try! Another note, not that it really matters, but the staff are not Japanese - I only mention that to reaffirm that it isn't 100% authentic despite their good effort at recreating a Japanese atmosphere.
