Borderline 2 or 3 stars... After reading the other reviews I expected this to be very good to excellent, and even when I took the first sip of my miso soup I expected the same. But, sadly, the leafy greens in my miso soup were crunchy. Crunchy? Yes, crunchy. I have no idea why. It almost tasted like they had been dried together with some miso powder and rehydrated just before serving. Aside from crunchy leafy green vegetables, the soup didn't quite taste like the miso I am used to, which was a disappointment. Still, I hit the rest of my meal expecting better. I had the roll combo -- salmon roll, California roll, and spicy tuna roll, all for $11.95 (a deal, for sure). The rolls were a bit on the smaller side compared to what I'm used to, but the price was still good, so I was happy and dug in. But, they were a bit bland and the California and tuna rolls too heavy on the cucumber relative to the rest of the ingredients. I am no sushi connoisseur, but I it's one of my favorites whenever I travel, so I'd say I probably eat Japanese 6-10 times a year at restaurants all over the country, including two different good places in New Orleans where I live. This was a let down because I know how good what I ordered can be, and it just wasn't. So, it's definitely in the "meh, I've had better" category. read more

Went here for lunch and it was delicious! We started off with the guacamole with wasabi with pita chips and tempura shrimp. I had the rocking sumo roll and it was sushi-deliciousness! It is spicy tuna with cucumber and cream cheese topped with salmon and green onions. The person with me had the hot night with shrimp tempura topped with tuna and spicy mayo and it was awesome too. There was only employees in the place the night I went in and it smelled of cigarette smoke.. Stale cigarette smoke. The miso was absolute garbage and the edamame was like refrigerated cold. The atmosphere was lacking even in the hipster grunge motif I felt they might have been going for? I was confused. My seared tuna was good. However Sushi pieces should fit into your mouth in my opinion. The shrimp entree I had was really good, simple, nothing fancy just good ingredients, well cooked. I'd never go back. I've been coming to Sumo San since they opened. I've always had great service and the sushi is very good by Richmond standards. When Victor (the owner) is there, he makes a point to say hello to everyone. Last night was the only bad experience I've ever had. As much as I adore Sumo San and Victor, the new blond haired server is by far one of the worst I've had - anywhere. She took our drink orders about 10 minutes after we were seated, no big deal, they were a bit on the busy side. However, when our sushi was prepared and placed on the counter, we still had not received our soup or drinks. After about 10 minutes I asked her to bring our drinks and about 5 minutes later, she did. She was turning to head to the back of the restaurant where she'd been visiting with friends so I also asked her to bring our food ... that had been sitting on the counter for about 15 minutes getting warm and she spat "Fine" and walked the whopping 8 steps to get it and back to deliver it. When we left, she made a point of rolling her eyes at me when she took the check. Hint, hint, blond server: 20% tip - (60% slowness + 30% bad attitude) = 10% tip. All that being said, please do check out Sumo San, it's a great sushi joint with a snazzy atmosphere and [generally] great service! read more

I spend a lot of time venturing for the top sushi places and Sumo-san is not one of them. Decor: Upon entering, the one can notice a small, contemporary styled eatery. The shelves and walls were adorn with a variety of decorations giving it a very eclectic feel. However, after sitting down and observing the environment, it does not look so great anymore. The shelves and walls are just packed with an assortment of junk. Don't believe me? There is a unicorn next to a giant calculator on the wall. This is supposed to be a sushi restaurant, not an Applebee's. Service: As a person who goes to many sushi restaurants, it is obvious that this place is illegitimate. If you're ever been lucky enough to enter a real sushi restaurant, you'll notice that the sushi chefs always greet you as you enter through the door. That in itself gives you the feeling that you are welcome to their restaurant. This greeting, as simple as it sounds, is a huge factor in distinguishing a sushi restaurant from any other restaurant. The chefs at Sumo-san, however, barely even glance or smile at you. On top of that, the chefs look like they hate their job. Sushi is not only a food, it is an art and an experience. At this point, the experience part is already down the drain. On top of this, making the simplest California roll and spicy tuna rolls took forever. It took nearly 40 minutes for food to arrive. The appetizers and the main courses were served pretty much at the same time. Food: The actual taste of the food was not that great. It was not inedible but it was close. Sushi is comprised of 4 basic parts: seaweed, rice, fish, and embellishments. I've heard that real Japanese sushi chefs spend years learning to perfect the art of cooking rice. At Sumo-san, I'd hope that the chefs only spent a day learning. Because any more time than that would be embarrassing after seeing their sushi rice. The rice was overdone. WAY overdone. Real sushi rice is precisely cooked so that it almost falls apart when it is picked up; however, you don't have to worry about that at Sumo-san's. If you threw the entire piece of sushi at a wall I'm pretty sure no rice would fall off because it's overdone and compressed so hard that air probably can't even reach the center. The fish is mediocre at best. salmon was too light and the tuna was too dark. The salmon lacked taste whereas the spicy tuna went overboard. High quality sushi tastes naturally sweet; however, Sumo-san sushi was everything but that. The avocado and vegetables in my rolls were mushed together so hard, that it is difficult in dim lighting to spot out the location of each ingredient. Thus, presentation of the sushi was also lacking. Thus, out of sushi's three aspects( taste, experience, and presentation) Sumo-san sushi has successfully failed in all three. In addition to sushi, I also had a steak teriyaki. The presentation of this dish was amazing. However, the sauce was too heavy, there was too little rice, the steak was way overdone, and the vegetables were overcooked except for the onions which were slightly undercooked (luckily I like that). My appetizer was vegetable tempura, which was pretty much the only good aspect. It is hard to find a Japanese restaurant that does not make their tempura overly greasy. This place is one of them. The vegetables were delicately fried and tasted pretty good. The presentation was also not bad. Overall: If you want vegetable tempura, come here. Otherwise, don't. this restaurant is overhyped and its food, service, and decor was less than adequate. Real sushi can be found at so many more places in Richmond. Save yourself some time. P.S. If you think the specialty rolls will make a difference, although I haven't tried them, I doubt it personally. Salmon and tuna rolls are the basics. If Sumo-san cannot make decent basic sushi, I highly doubt that they can make edible specialty sushi. read more

I love Sumo San. Any time somebody asks me about a great sushi spot I recommend them 10 out of 10 times. The owner is super friendly and personable and will make the sushi right in front of you if you're sitting at the bar. He even will generally greet guests as they walk in after the host/hostess, as he's making all the sushi orders. I can see why this place has had the success and longevity that they have. Sumo San is about the food. It is really comfortable. Try the Crouching Tiger Roll, Hot Night Roll, all the hand rolls, eel nigiri... There is so much here that needs to be eaten. Their status as of last night: "That fake-o Hurricane Sandy may have forced us to close today - but Sumo San will be open for lunch tomorrow (Tuesday). Come in and see us!" Hurricane Sandy is no more "fake-o" than Isabel, Irene, or any other hurricane that has slammed our area in the past. Just because we were lucky enough to escape the severity of Sandy doesn't mean that other parts of our country aren't being devastated by its path and aftereffects. Sumo San's insensitivity is appalling. Please think about going somewhere else for lunch/dinner next time you or your friends want sushi or Japanese food. As far as food goes, it's decent and I enjoyed going there. I'm typically not much of a 'PC' guy either, but this really struck a cord regarding the mentality of the management. There are equally good/better Japanese establishments in Richmond that I think deserves my patronage more than here. read more

Unfortunately, I don't ever plan on going back because of my terrible experience the last time. I'm giving this restaurant 3 stars mainly because of the long wait from the 2 times I've eaten here. I think the second time I visited, I waited for over half an hour. I noticed that some of the previous reviews have mentioned the long service wait as well. The sushi and other food items I've ordered were good, but nothing exceptional. Maybe I'll have to give this restaurant one more try in the near future, but for now, I'll be sticking to my go to sushi places. read more

This is my absolute go to sushi restaurant in Richmond. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I love their New York Roll - it has just the right balance between savory, sweet, and spicy. I find that most of their portions leave me feeling full and satisfied afterwards, which can be a concern at some sushi restaurants. Additionally their Potstickers are a great appetizer and you can never go wrong with Miso soup. Additionally the Sumo Attack is a great balance between flavors - the fish always tastes fresh. My husband and I went with some friends who suggested he and I get a sushi roll along with one dinner entree. We ordered the New York roll and it was DELICIOUS. I'm not sure what these yellow crispy "things" that they put on the roll but mix them with the spicy sauce on top and it was amazing. We also ordered the spicy basil chicken which was also very good, but the highlight was the NY roll. This was plenty of food for the two of us, so splitting was a great idea. read more

After reading reviews on Sumo San, my boyfriend and I decided to try it out. The interior design was nice but there was no one in the restaurant however, this was probably due to the fact that we came in a little earlier than their usual dinner time. The host and waitress were ok, they weren't too welcoming but they weren't rude. Meal: I don't know why no one has mentioned this or maybe we came on a bad day, but the water and orange juice served was just horrible. At first I thought that I was the only one and was being too picky, but then my boyfriend also agreed that the drinks tasted off. Both drinks had some sort of plastic or rubber kind of after taste and the orange juice also tasted like old, expired, orange juice. My boyfriend got the Terriyaki steak. He is a big steak lover, and when I noticed he wasn't eat much of it, I knew something was wrong. He said that the steak didn't taste like it was cooked long enough. I tasted it and felt the same way, it was really light colored and too soft, even for steaks. The terriyaki sauce that it was covered in was ok as well....it wasn't anything too special. I had the philly roll and cucumber salad. The philly roll was pretty decent. I'm not a sushi connoisseur, so I can't really judge it. The Cucumber salad however, was just tooooo sour. Granted the menu said it was dressed with a sweet vinegar, but it was way too sour. The cucumber and carrots were literally drenched in the vinegar. For a good asian pickled vegetable, the veggies should never be drenched in the sauce when served. It was not good. Point of story: I don't plan on coming back to this restaurant. The food was mediocre and the drinks had a foul taste. Bad food is understandable....it happens, but water and orange juice? Not acceptable at all. read more

The rest of the menu is filled with your general Japanese food options, priced accordingly. My favorite place to drink in Richmond! Not to mention the sushi is delicious. No one else makes a gin and tonic the way I like it except for Sumo San and all of the drinks are pretty strong. During happy hour I have seen people order sake bombs but this consists of one of the waiters banging his head on the table wearing a bicycle helmet when he serves it. Even if you don't like sushi the dumplings are great and so is the spicy steak salad. Great service and very fun atmosphere! read more
