hard and dry rice...not sure about what's going on with that piece of ahi
    Angel H.

We were at the NEX and I decided to try this place out. It was below average. The people working there were nice. I got the Cali Nigiri Combo. The food was meh. The rice in the nigiris were on the firmer side and dry. I thought the rice in the California Roll would be better, but nope, same hard rice. The tamago had a nice sweetness to it. The squid, salmon and shrimp were good and fresh. I don't know what happened to the piece of ahi. The worst piece of ahi I've had in my life. If you look at the close up of the pic the ahi is two tone and splitting. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I'm taking my behind to Popeyes next time. It's the next stall over.

Was hungry and debated on eating sushi or philly steak in the food court and came here. Sushi was made quick. This place does need better customer service though. There were other people that ordered sushi before and after us. And they employees do call out what food is being served but the guy has such a soft voice and the food court isn't even that loud, he just didn't wanna project his voice it seemed like and people don't know what food is there's or not especially since it's bagged up. You can only know your food if you just walk back up to the register and ask them yourself and then they just hand you the food that's been sitting on the counter for a while. I noticed the containers they have the sushi in are thick reusable, microwaveable Tupperware. I was surprised because I cant imagine how much of it goes straight into the trash after a customer has a quick meal. Me on the other hand, I took the tupperware home and use it everyday. Sushi is okay. There's not that much fish they give, lots of rice and cucumbers though, I had 3 big chunks of cucumber that overpowered the fish.

Food was good and tasty but I think they use previously frozen fish. But was still good! First time trying this location with my wife!

The worst sushi I bought in my life. The unagi was thin and soggy, the ahi was small. The salmon was slimy. I paid 17 dollars too. I only ate it cause I paid for it already.

Spicy Ahi Combo with California Roll. I added the crunchies.

My coworker and I were starving and not too far from the NEX so we jumped in the car with the intention of grabbing a gyro. When we got to the food court (found on the second floor of the NEX) the gyro place had a sign up that said they'd brb. Rather than waiting we turned our attention to the picture menu of the sushi stand right next door. I decided on a spicy ahi and California roll combo, to which I added crunchies for a 50 cent upcharge. Definitely worth the extra 50 cents to add the crispy bits. My coworker got the tempura donburi. The food court here is noisy and crowded, but tables were available if you walked around. We opted to take our lunches back to the office. Service was fast, food was decent, price was reasonable.

Not the restaurant quality sushi but It did the job. I don't like the menu without any pricing. You literally have to stick your head in the window to see the fine print for prices. I got spicy tuna/California roll and my daughter got her California rolls. Next time I'll do all fresh fish...

    Sad excuse of a donburi.

This place needs to go. Sad excuse for an overpriced donburi. Can go other places that'll give you QUALITY food for the same price these guys are charging. Unreal.

If you're at the NEX and you're hungry, this might not be the best place. I tried the spicy ahi donburi and it was kinda small. Looks barely bigger than the bowls they serve at Genki. It tasted okay - so it wasn't a total waste.

    Philadelphia roll
    Betty L.

Had the Philadelphia roll. It was a quick fix for a sushi craving I've been having. The rice is spread on to the seaweed with a machine. Not necessarily a detriment. Just very evenly balanced rice... There's an average amount of filling. Nothing to get excited about. As a salmon lover, it was not satisfying enough and I would not get the same thing again. Possibly try something else on the menu, but prices on the high end for what you're getting. The service was fine though and they have all condiments, including packaged ginger.

Crunch Donburi (spicy ahi with avocado and crunchy bits)

My go to food option when I visit the NEX since that's their only location. My favorite item to get on the menu is the crunch donburi since it contains spicy ahi, two slices of avocado, the crunchy bits which I believe is tempura flakes and drizzled unagi sauce and spicy mayo. The bowl is $11.99 and I believe the price is worth it with the amount of fish and toppings you get! I just wish they had another location closer to home and a wider selection for their nigiri menu.

After walking around, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. I gave her my name, but she said we didn't have one, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She then explained that our reservation was actually at their sister restaurant around the other side of the building. We went over there and found that it was primarily a sushi restaurant, which wasn't really what we were looking for. We had expected more of an izakaya-style experience, so we canceled the reservation and returned to the original restaurant. Once seated, the service was good and our server was attentive throughout the meal. One thing that was a little confusing was that sushi and sashimi had to be ordered from the sister restaurant, even though we were dining in the other restaurant. The food was brought over and served to us without any issues, and there were no problems with the bill, but it took us a while to understand how the two restaurants operated together. We ordered several dishes, including chicken skin wrapped gyoza, crab tempura, an assorted sashimi platter, a cream cheese and fish roe appetizer served with toast, an egg dish topped with fish roe, chicken karaage, and the miso butterfish. The highlights for me were the chicken karaage, miso butterfish, and gyoza. I enjoyed them enough to order another round of the gyoza and chicken. That said, many of the dishes leaned toward the sweeter side of Japanese cuisine, which just isn't my personal preference. If you enjoy those flavors, your experience may be different. Overall, the food was good, the service was solid, and there were a few standout dishes. The confusion with the reservation, entrance setup, and relationship between the two restaurants got the evening off to an awkward start, but the meal improved once we were seated. I'm not really a Japanese food person, so four stars is probably the highest rating I could realistically give a Japanese restaurant. With that in mind, I thought they did a good job, and there were a few dishes I would consider ordering again.

Since it was a common order maybe they waited to see if someone else ordered that? That kind of service really stands out. They definitely did not need to do that, and it made a big difference, especially since I was trying to eat quickly before going into work. Since they were already helping me out, I added a fried fish side, and it was really good. It was very crispy and came with a sweet and sour sauce that worked well with it. It was a concept of "bringing Japan's finest to Hawaii" with a desire to "build a bridge between the two cultures of Japan and Hawaii." In 2018, operations were taken over by Testsuya Matsuda. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Salmon, ahi belly, katsu, and more. * Sushi Bar. With miso soup. Menu offerings are deluxe & standard assorted sushi, maguro don, Chirashi sushi. * Noodles. Choice of udon or soba with various combinations, e.g., nabeyaki, tempura, tororo, tanuki, zaru, kitsune, tori, tukimi, kake, and ojiya udon. Also, combo meals of tendon/noodle, sushi/noodle; and donburi of unaju, oyako don and ten-ju. * Side order & ala carte. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! Free parking in the private lot shared by other businesses, as well as metered street parking. It absolutely did not disappoint. Safe to say I'll be wondering why I waited so long! We ordered quite a variety and every dish brought something delicious to the table. The Red Spider (soft shell crab, crab meat, romaine lettuce, cucumber, avocado, and tobiko) was incredible. Every single bite was packed with flavor and texture. That crispy soft shell crab added the perfect crunch that made this roll hard to stop eating. The Black Spider (soft shell crab, crab meat, cream cheese, romaine lettuce, cucumber, and avocado) was an interesting twist from the Red Spider. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was equally delicious. The cream cheese gave it a richer, creamier bite that worked surprisingly well. Next up was the Chicken Katsu Curry. Japanese-style curry with veggies and crispy chicken katsu over rice. The chicken was beautifully crispy, exactly how katsu should be. Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired perfectly with the rich curry. The veggies were cooked just right too. Overall, a really satisfying dish. The Spicy Ahi Handroll was another winner. You really can't go wrong with this one. It was fresh, flavorful, and honestly disappeared within two bites. Yum! Then came the Pork Katsu Donburi with scrambled eggs, veggies over rice, drizzled with their amazing house sauce. Just like the chicken, the pork katsu was delicious. But can we talk about that sauce? Perfecto. I'm not sure what's in it, but it tied the entire dish together beautifully. And of course, dessert! The Fried Oreo with Ice Cream. It came with vanilla ice cream surrounded by deep-fried Oreo and drizzled with chocolate syrup. It was yuuuuummy! Hands down, I would order this again. Do not pass up this dessert. From sushi rolls to katsu dishes and ending on a sweet note, Sushi Spot completely exceeded expectations. Great flavors, satisfying portions, and multiple dishes I'd happily order again. If you've been driving by this place and saying, "I'll try it one day," take this as your sign. This spot is an absolute must try!
