I love eating here every time I pop into this mall and visit the exchange. Located at NEX on the second floor food court is a hidden treasure for sushi lovers. I love their Salmon Nigiri and California rolls here as well as the containers they are served in. Pictured is the Spicy Ahi combo with California rolls. We were at the NEX and I decided to try this place out. It was below average. The people working there were nice. I got the Cali Nigiri Combo. The food was meh. The rice in the nigiris were on the firmer side and dry. I thought the rice in the California Roll would be better, but nope, same hard rice. The tamago had a nice sweetness to it. The squid, salmon and shrimp were good and fresh. I don't know what happened to the piece of ahi. The worst piece of ahi I've had in my life. If you look at the close up of the pic the ahi is two tone and splitting. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I'm taking my behind to Popeyes next time. It's the next stall over. read more

Super speedy service, tons of seating to eat, and lots of options for your sushi! The folks were hard, and the quality is pretty darn good for a super small little convenient sushi spot. My kid just loves avocado so of course the sushi there is perfect as there are a few options with avocado. All the classics, etc. but also some fun ones like their bowls and their hand rolls. Was hungry and debated on eating sushi or philly steak in the food court and came here. Sushi was made quick. This place does need better customer service though. There were other people that ordered sushi before and after us. And they employees do call out what food is being served but the guy has such a soft voice and the food court isn't even that loud, he just didn't wanna project his voice it seemed like and people don't know what food is there's or not especially since it's bagged up. You can only know your food if you just walk back up to the register and ask them yourself and then they just hand you the food that's been sitting on the counter for a while. I noticed the containers they have the sushi in are thick reusable, microwaveable Tupperware. I was surprised because I cant imagine how much of it goes straight into the trash after a customer has a quick meal. Me on the other hand, I took the tupperware home and use it everyday. Sushi is okay. There's not that much fish they give, lots of rice and cucumbers though, I had 3 big chunks of cucumber that overpowered the fish. read more

My coworker and I were starving and not too far from the NEX so we jumped in the car with the intention of grabbing a gyro. When we got to the food court (found on the second floor of the NEX) the gyro place had a sign up that said they'd brb. Rather than waiting we turned our attention to the picture menu of the sushi stand right next door. I decided on a spicy ahi and California roll combo, to which I added crunchies for a 50 cent upcharge. Definitely worth the extra 50 cents to add the crispy bits. My coworker got the tempura donburi. The food court here is noisy and crowded, but tables were available if you walked around. We opted to take our lunches back to the office. Service was fast, food was decent, price was reasonable. read more

Giving this place zero stars. The quality of food was not worth the price. Do yourselves a favor and just drive further down to Pearlridge mall. They have fast food sushi eateries with better quality/tasting options on their menu, and with better customer service. I ordered the volcano maki it was imitation crab roll with spicy ahi on top. The rice was hard and dry, and the imitation crab was also dry. The portion of ahi cubes on top was minimal. The spicy ahi tasted like hot sauce in watered down mayo. After taking one bite I immediately wanted to ask for some kind of sauce for more flavor as it just tasted like hot sauce (I can't even pin point what it tasted like. It was between hot sauce and sriracha.) so I went back to ask for unagi sauce. The man at the register then tells me he "can't put unagi sauce on the side, but if the food is brought back he could drizzle it on top" ... really? The customer service here was HORRIBLE. AGAIN, the man taking orders wore a mask and didn't even give effort in projecting, I could barely hear anything he said. He took my order and within a couple minutes, then kept calling my number on my receipt so I went up only for him to realize he had made a mistake and said "no sorry not 9 I meant 8 your orders not ready yet." My order was literally the last order that he took yet he still a couple minutes later called out the wrong number, then looked at me as if I made the mistake. I would not recommend this place. I definitely don't recommend anyone coming here. The manager is rude and has no manners. All of the donburi bowls are overpriced, they give you a minimal amount of spicy ahi & mostly rice served in a small bowl for over $12. If you go to the nex commissary you can get fresh premium poke by the pound which saves a lot of money, all you need to do is make the rice at home. The majority of the sushi rolls are over $10 and all you'll get is 8 sushi rolls which are often hard and smothered in sauce. They'll also put mostly cucumbers and a little bit of avocado with very little imitation crab/ fish in the rolls. read more

This sushi stand is in the food court of the Pearl Harbor NEX. You don't need to be military-affiliated to eat at any of the food carts and counters here. Sumo Sushi Hawaii has quite a large menu for a food cart. Portions are small by American standards, so do not choose to eat here if you are starving. It was a little on the pricier side for the amount of food you get. In addition, I was a slightly apprehensive to eat raw fish from here, so ended up getting a shrimp tempura bento: 4 pieces of slightly soggy shrimp tempura over a bed of white rice and drizzled with ponzu sauce. It came with some edamame and a 4-piece California roll. I didn't get a stomachache from any of the food, so that was definitely one good thing. However, nothing about this place is stellar. I would recommend this basic, standard, no-frills place to eat for when you do not want to eat the typical fast food and don't have the appetite for a plate lunch, and if you're already at the NEX or Commissary to run errands. I didn't think Sumo Sushi Hawaii was anything to write Yelp about, but I'll do it anyway and help you with the conundrum that is deciding what to eat at a food court. read more

Had the Philadelphia roll. It was a quick fix for a sushi craving I've been having. The rice is spread on to the seaweed with a machine. Not necessarily a detriment. Just very evenly balanced rice... There's an average amount of filling. Nothing to get excited about. As a salmon lover, it was not satisfying enough and I would not get the same thing again. Possibly try something else on the menu, but prices on the high end for what you're getting. The service was fine though and they have all condiments, including packaged ginger. read more

My favorite item to get on the menu is the crunch donburi since it contains spicy ahi, two slices of avocado, the crunchy bits which I believe is tempura flakes and drizzled unagi sauce and spicy mayo. The bowl is $11.99 and I believe the price is worth it with the amount of fish and toppings you get! The sushi I had at this Sumo Sushi is on the worse side for sushi I have had in Hawaii. They are made to order but for some reason, all the seaweed they used to wrap the rice was super soggy. Rolls are cut into too big pieces and the rice was falling apart....tells me the sushi chef has absolutely no skill. My shrimp tempura roll had nothing but cucumbers.....I visually confirmed little tiny shrimp with soggy batter....didn't taste shrimp whatsoever. But what was I expecting??? We tried Sumo Sushi once before. We thought...pretty decent spot to get your sushi fix!! Last time I got the spider rolls and they were the right amount of spicy! We went again today and I was like get me the spider rolls, they were pretty on point last time. We took it to go and when we got home, I opened it, took one bite and seen this little fellow crawl out from underneath another piece. Unfortunately it was too late for me to spit out the bite I had taken. So disgusting. Every time I go to the NEX food court, I am faced with the challenge of trying to figure out what I want to eat because of the many choices they have. This last time was no different and after 15 minutes of walking around and checking out the many menus, I decided on Sumo Sushi Hawaii because the food looked like something that could potentially satisfy my tastebuds. I ended up ordering a bento, which came with white rice and a skimpy portion of spicy ahi, shrimp tempura, tempura maki and edamame. Presentation wise, the bento looked decent but the flavors weren't much to rave about, the shrimp tempura was soggy and the spicy ahi was somewhat bland & not spicy much at all. Given all the other options in the food court, this may be my last resort if I ever end up trying to figure out what to eat next time. read more

Although this place is off a little food cart and the kids don't even have to roll out the rice, the sushi was pretty decent. Sumo Sushi is a small sushi stand located in the Rotunda of the Navy Exchange. The menu is pretty large for such a small stand and the food is okay. It's something quick to eat and I enjoyed my volcano roll. Only downside for me is the price. 1 roll was around $9.75 so it felt a little expensive for a california roll topped with spicy ahi. read more

This is food court sushi. I ended up ordering from here when I realized that the Cuban place in the NEX was gone and had been replaced with a hot dog and lemonade stand. I ordered a spicy ahi roll and it was pretty big and decent in flavor. I wouldn't seek this place out again, but it passed the test of me not getting sick and the sushi tasted fresh. Ate here about a week ago and it was pretty decent as far as fast food sushi goes. So me and my wife decided to head to the nex today and on our way out figured grab some sushi for lunch. We got home sat down my wife opened her container and ate one piece of the sushi. She looked down to grab another piece and noticed a cockroach in between the rolls. This is in a mall...so no comments about service or ambiance...it's a mall...enough said about that. As for the food...I'm being extremely generous with the 1 star. Probably the worse Japanese food I've ever had in my life. I had the NEX Special bento...rice, unagi, spicy ahi, shrimp tempura, tamago nigiri, and salmon nigiri. First the rice...cold and hard. Unagi...3 paper thin slices with super sweet sauce. Spicy ahi...taste was ok...but fish quality was terrible. Shrimp tempura...limp and could taste the batter...yuk! Tamago and salmon nigiri...inedible. I think every ingredient...except the rice...was previously frozen and of the poorest quality possible. I know it's hard to run a profitable food establishment these days...but the food needs to be the focus...and this place has fallen so far short of putting out even anything resembling Japanese food. I hope they read this review and decide to make some changes...since I hate to see a business fail. Based on this first ever meal here...I will never ever give them another try...nor would I recommend them to anyone looking for a bento or bowl. read more

Sump sushi see es westernized sushi, its no where near authentic or traditional Japanese sushi. Except for the simple nigiri that are served. There are no exotic fish, there is no uni, there is no ikura. Plenty of California rolls, tempura rolls, cream cheese rolls. They throw too many sauce over all of the sushi, so you can barely taste the fish. I guess its ok if you dont mind an overwhelming amount of sauces to smoother out the taste. I've only ever ordered the spicy ahi donburi and, as far as spicy ahi goes, this is pretty good. I think its made every day by someone different though because the spiciness and texture varies every time I get it. Most of the time the sauce is thick and the right amount of spicy, but sometimes it's thin and just not very good at all. Despite the variation, it's usually delicious and I recommend trying it if you're deciding what to order at the NEX. read more

Got food poisoning eating their sushi. It was 5 minutes before they closed, yeah maybe it's my own fault, but even then they need to keep their fish refrigerated or keep a timeline of its shelf life. Upon eating the sushi, I thought it tasted just a little funny to me and ended up only eating 3 pieces. A couple hours later my stomach started to hurt really bad and ended up having diarrhea. Maybe don't order so late in the night or don't eat from them at all. read more
