Came here due to reviews and because I wanted to try the creme brûlée french toast. I was expecting the french toast to be stuffed with creme brûlée but it was more like a cinnamon type of bread with the top caramelized with melted sugar. You could slightly taste the creme brûlée flavor but it was minimal. Honestly wasn't anything wow in my opinion. The other person that was with me ordered the waffle and chicken and it was average. Chicken on the waffles was tenders and they were not flavorful and kind of dry. Waffles were average, Ihop waffles taste way better. Atmosphere is nice, place seems small and majority of seats are bar/stool style which its pretty cool. Overall food was OK not great, and prices are towards the higher end. I didnt try anythig else from the menu so I cannot comment on that. read more

Ordered the chicken n' waffles which came with sausage gravy: the waffle was delicious; really enjoyed it. Can't say that I would write home about the chicken and sausage gravy. I was a bit taken aback with the chicken. Heavily breaded chicken fingers on a waffle just doesn't seem right also when it comes to this dish, I prefer dark meat. Due to the chicken fingers, I wasn't sure if I made a mistake and had ordered the kids meal. Admittedly I don't have a lot of experience with sausage gravy but it just seemed...meh. I really dug the vibe and friendly southern charm of this place. I haven't had very much experience with chicken waffles, but I love the concept of sweet and savory whenever I can get it. Sun Diner offered a chicken waffle dish that was topped with chicken gravy and pecan syrup. Shit! Sounds good to me. But first I inquire about the chicken and am told... breaded chicken tenders. That concerned me for some reason. I mean chicken tenders are for kids, right? Plus, I'm a dark meat (thigh) guy. What the hell, I go against my instinct and order it up. Sure enough, the tenders were not satisfying. Mostly breading around dry white meat. My conclusion is that if you are going to put fried chicken on a waffle, put a real piece of chicken in there. I mean do the chicken like real fried chicken. A real piece of fried chicken. If it were me, skin on boneless thigh soaked in butter milk and breaded golden delicious. This is a special dish. Do it the right way, like you mean it. Serious business. Respect. Breakfast tacos ordered by my dining companions were very good. Also, the homemade ketchup and green salsa rocked. read more

This old style walk up all-counter diner ( except for two booths in the back) has a fresh flair to traditional food but that doesn't stray so far as to be off-putting or snide. It's 24/7 and right off Broadway so it's as much a public service to the drinkin' masses as it is an eatery. Though not that old it feels iconic with its tip-o-the hat to old country Rock-a-Billy music. And speaking of music, they play a nice brisk but not too loud array of quirky 60-70-80s music, though it was odd to hear Elvis sing " here comes Santa Claus" in late May. The space feels like 1945. There could be WWII posters here and it would feel authentic. The service is warm and each visit feels like slipping on old Wrangler jeans broken in just right. Always a morning person, and not a fan of Starbucks breakfast, and you are walking at 8 am on Broadway St. with everything closed, it was to my happy surprise, a 24 hour diner! This is no Waffle House, this is worthy of being in the mix of Nashville's restaurants. Bacon is premier, eggs are worthy of small farm quality, and the toast...THE TOAST! actually got a second order because of how good they were. The potatoes that came with had some sweet potatoes mixed in to just make you smile. You can't miss the restaurant with the big picture window of the SUN flashing neon sign, right next to the Johnny Cash museum. Limited menu, but what they do, they do excellent. After collecting our gear and checking out the R'n'R HM Expo at the Music City Center we needed some lunch. Located right next door to the Johnny Cash Museum it was convenient. Nice memorabilia on the walls with a "diner" atmosphere. We ordered the Love Me Tenders/Fries and Chicken & Waffles which were generous portions. The food was actually good but our server Joy was a bit on the slow and snooty side. Refills were minimal and she never really checked on us or offered anything else. That was the only real negative there because the other staff were friendly. We may go back but will look for something else first. read more

Sun Diner is a relatively new addition to the Downtown Nashville eateries. So new, that our hotel shuttle driver didn't even know about the place. We visited on a Monday afternoon and there were just about two other couples dining. We received a hearty welcome from at least 3 members of staff and made our way to a booth at the back of diner. The layout of the diner is unique with 3 large rectangular slab counters surrounded by stools and 2 booths at the far back. In keeping with the Music City theme, the walls are covered with are pictures and art work depicting a rich musical history. Our waiter had me on the fence, carefree but a cool dude. Rather than resting items on the table he tossed them at us. His actions reminded me of those servers at Dick's Last Resort but without the verbal slurs. The chef was quite friendly though. We tried: - Donut breakfast sandwich: Donuts are on my list of 'Retired foods' since I ate too much as a child but somehow I could not resist the idea of a glazed donut with eggs. Yes, it's was as yummy as it sounds! - Feeling Good Breakfast Burger: Oh my goodness, the bread! Really, who raves about bread? It was that good! Stumbled across this place when my friend and I were looking for some late night food after a night out on broadway. This diner is conveniently located right off of Broadway and its 24 hours!! When we arrived, there was open seating so we got a spot at one of the horseshoe tables at the bar (there are two booths at the end of the restaurant and the majority of seating is bar seating shaped as horseshoes - there are 3 of them). I love breakfast wraps so that is what I went with. The wrap was really good, i would not say it was small. The hash browns at Sun Diner are so good - they aren't what I typically put in the category of "hash browns" though. This place had a line out the door so I figured it must be as good as the reviews said it was. The line moved very quickly. I think we may have waited about 20 minutes if that to be seated. Normally pre-COVID, the diner is open 24 hours! I believe the server said during COVID they are currently staying open to 1am. He was moving fast so I'm not 100% sure that's what he said. The point is that you can get good eats here almost around the clock. The hostess and our server were very nice! I forget the hostess name but she was a fellow Michigan native. Great service! Can you say yummy??? My husband ordered the Chicken and Waffles minus the white gravy. He's not a gravy guy. He enjoyed his meal as well. I stole a piece of his chicken to balance out my sugar overload. It was really good; seasoned very well. We were in and out within an hour. Great food, great service...just go and see for yourself! I'm not sure what Edison bulbs and barnwood have to do with Sun Records, but OK. I was willing to give this place a chance. Seating is intimate, with most of the place taken up with stools on a zig-zagging counter. There are a couple of tables, but if you counted on sitting together, there are certainly better options close by. Music is loud; almost too much so, given that I could hardly hear my lunch companion two seats down from me. This place has a definite focus on appearances, but the execution is lacking. My plate had obviously been sitting for a while -- I ordered an omelette with home fries, and the potatoes were cold and the cheddar had congealed. That's not quite what I had expected for a $14 breakfast entree. To their credit, they at least were able to serve hot potatoes quickly when I asked, which surprised me given how long the wait was for food in a half-full restaurant. This is a place that caters to tourists, which is fine for what it is, but this local is going to stay away. This is a highly polished and attractive looking souvenir stand, but the restaurant comes off as an afterthought. read more

By the food being cold we asked them to put it on the warmer. I wish we hadn't because the waffle was even more dry. I've had really great chicken and waffles so to their benefit they had a very high standard to reach and sadly fell short. Take message: Maybe select another option or take the risk if you must. This may be the best diner food I've ever ingested. The chicken and waffles is amazing. Their chicken fingers alone are to die for. They are made fresh with the perfect ratio of chicken to batter. The French Toast was phenomenal and the Short Rib Hash was also top notch. My girlfriend and I also decided to try one of their cinnamon rolls and that was crazy good as well. Stayed in Nashville for 4 days and this is the only place I revisited more than once (stopped by 3 times!). In short, this is a must try place while on broadway in Nashville. My 1st late nite spot in Nashville! Open 24 hours a day. I checked out the limited menu and walked in not sure what to expect... and they delivered! This place is a throw back to the old Sun Records, and is right next door to be Johnny Cash museum... Photo of his motorcycle included. Some cool options from a breakfast sandwich between a glazed donut to omelette, pancakes, waffles and burgers. I had the Million Dollar Quartet with Home made sausage, Eggs, Bacon & hash browns. They should warn you that the food is massive and an amazing value for someone who lives in SF. And the shakes aren't half bad too. With the friendly service, these guys are going to do well. They said they just opened on Thurs so I caught them in he first few days. My server was Angela and the chef was Ed. Solid service and I will be back when I visit Nashville again! read more

I was staying downtown for work, and I needed to grab lunch before a meeting. I walked into Sun Diner, a pretty new spot at the time, because there aren't a ton of restaurants downtown with awesome reviews. This one looked intriguing, and I love breakfast food any time of day. I loved the decor and layout! Really fitting for Music City, delightfully retro. Most of the seating is at the counter, which is casual and laid back. The food was pretty good. I had a breakfast burrito. The potatoes surprised me because there were sweet ones in the mix, not bad. I got the wrong tea from my server at first, but it was corrected pretty easily. Prices are on par for downtown, touristy Nashville. Steep but expected. My one complaint is that I had to pay at the register, which is located by the door, and there just isn't much space there if there's a line. I kept bumping into people entering the restaurant while I waited. Overall, I'd say this is a safe bet when you're downtown, and I think it would taste even better at 3am. Went to Sun Diner for breakfast at 8:30am this morning. I was happily surprised that it was almost empty. I was running in late so I didn't look at the menu. I just ordered bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee. I asked for the eggs to be cooked "over well" and to make sure the yokes were not broken. What showed up were eggs that looked like they had almost been scrambled, burnt toast, and cottage fries. On the plus side, everything was hot, except the toast, and the bacon was good.
