    Destroyer King Dough

We stopped here on our way to March madness. I was a bit sad they had no bubbles for a beermosa but we still made the best of it. I was happy it wasn't too crowded either! Got the destroyer from King Dough as well.

Back in the fall my mom and I met up for lunch and drinks at Sun King. It's one of our go-to spots because it has a food hall inside of a top notch brewery / distillery. My mom is a creature of habit and normally drinks their cream ale but I encouraged her to branch out and try some seasonal brews with me. We did a flight and her favorite was the Salted Caramel Brownie Porter. While my favorite ended up being the Caramel Apple Tripel because of the barrel aged combination of fruit notes and brown sugar sweetness. Sun King never fails to come up with unique small batch beers, so it doesn't matter what time of year that you decide to visit because the good beer is always flowing!

Just a solid Biergarten with an amazing location. The beer is consistently very good. While they don't have their own food...they do share space with a Couple of smaller joints that are closer to a brick n mortar food truck vibe. There are also a handful of excellent restaurants within a 2 min walk. I'll keep coming back for the beer and great service.

Decks, awnings, turf, buzzing beepers, bells, and whistles - it's all here. This is a double decker food hall, an institution of brew. And yet, amidst the noise, it's nowhere to be found. Sun King stepped into a stadium of top shaggers, saw the floodlights, and ran. Was my meal tasty? Certainly. Clean plate club as always. If somebody bought this Buffalo Chicken Wrap for me I'd be ever grateful. But it's bigger than that. Modern era bar food, located in prime estate on this Monon trail, needs more. In my eyes, an identity is absent. American eatery meets sunny afternoon is a bar flying awfully close to the sun. It requires gumption to survive. Boldness enough to hand me a paper menu covered in ketchup. QR codes are system quarterbacks built upon Defensive Coordinators. In conjunction with those aforementioned beepers, makes an old head out of me. This pairing lauds organization as champion. Where's the chance to experience? Here's the answer. Wrap my meal in tin foil, yell out a number, and let me scurry. Have somebody waiting with a sack, by this point, that's perspired. Imagine Five Guys fry bag. I unwrap this meal upon return to my table and blue cheese is everywhere. You can't make out where the sauce started and meal began. Smiles spread no further than that moment! Capture it. Sell it. In the meantime, Godspeed y'all.

My friend came into town to visit for my birthday and to kill some time we stopped in. I was a bit disappointed by the level of service they provided so we only stuck with one drink and left. It's a huge establishment with plenty of space for crowds but we just didn't feel very welcomed. We did not order food but it's a bar at the end of the day.

We were on vacation and popped in here. Very unique location with lots to do. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a flight. The staff were fairly attentive but didn't attempt to connect with us.

Fantastic spot for drinks after work, especially since they have ample seating inside and out along with food options. Service has always been spot on and never have to wait too long for a beer! One of these days I'm going to venture out of IPA land into the land of other styles of Sun King beer.

While I've always had a strange affection for Castleton Square, the truth is these closed-air malls are dying out in favor of mixed usage malls and open-air concepts. Fashion Mall is still around, of course, and Greenwood Park is still here even if it has done at least a modest renovation toward open-air. Washington Square? It might as well be dead. Lafayette Square? The same. Hamilton Town Center is pretty rocking, however, it largely is an open-air concept. Fashion Mall is great for luxury items and a food court vastly superior to Castleton. Both malls have movie theaters - while I love Landmark, I actually give the nod to AMC Castleton here. Castleton is still a Simon mall. It continues to have major spots vacant including the front of the mall spot recently vacated by Forever 21. This is an older mall that still has sporadic issues with violence, a fairly strong IMPD presence, and a woeful lack of major draw retailers. JC Penney is still here despite rumors of bankruptcy, though the store itself is so dirty you'll likely need a tetanus shot when you leave. Von Maur is fine. You've got Macy's with a Starbucks in it, though Cath Coffee is local and has a kiosk in the mall (the old Starbucks). The food court still has a Chick-fil-A, a Luca Pizza, and a handful of others. McAlister's still has a spot with an exterior entrance. It looks like a Mexican joint has taken the old Johnny Rocket's spot that has seen several other restaurants quickly fail. I'd recommend coming in from East 82nd Street as streets are smoother. East 86th Street is getting some attention (finally), but you'll still likely need an alignment from driving it (if you go to Costco or Saraga you know this). Parking is typically abysmal here. People argue over ADA spots (Seriously, I was yelled at today for moving too slowly to vacate one). There's a tension in the mall that seems palpable and I actually felt a sense of relief when I left. My favorite spots? The movie theater, of course. I do still like the McAlister's. I'm a fan of Earthbound Trading Company off the food court. I like FYE, Yankee Candle, and Spencer Gifts. There's a Native American goods shop that's pretty cool, as well. Four Seasons Florist is a nice spot and Grade A Tattoos has a place here. Boss Battle Games has a $15 entry and you can play all day. Lego still has a great and popular spot here. There's an exterior sign indicating Hobby Lobby is joining the mall soon - I think around the long vacant Sears spot. Accessibility is pretty decent here. Main doors are automatic. Accessible/ADA parking is plentiful (though frequently misused and nearly never enforced). The main accessible restrooms are near the food court. I'd still like to see this mall get a more practical retailer - Hobby Lobby may fill that need soon. I noticed today that there's almost an international marketplace vibe starting to happen here with a more diverse clientele and a few more indie shops noticed. Ultimately, I didn't really enjoy shopping here like I have in the past. I didn't hate it, but I didn't leave thinking "I can't wait to go back." Instead, I noticed the tension and I really felt like I'd much rather go to free-standing or open-air spots than be immersed in this tense, uncomfortable shopping experience. I'd probably go 2.5 if I could. I can't. 2 feels a little low and considering there's still some great shopping to be had here I'll stick with a 3-star rating with a slight disclaimer that Castleton Square sure seems like it's headed downhill.

We stopped by Panda Express on Carmel Drive. We like Panda Express because of the fresh and consistent food. It is also a private business, started by two graduates of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.... my wife's alma mater. However, this experience was a bit different that our previous. First, we arrived at 7:58pm and their sign was not lit. It is now getting dark outside earlier and we thought perhaps they closed at 8pm. However, the sign on the door said open to 9pm so we went inside. The lighting outside was so poor that they about lost us as a customer, thinking they were not open. Inside there were two individuals preparing a large To-Go order. We were the only individuals in the restaurant, the customer with the To-Go order had not arrived. We waited for 4 minutes while the two individuals NEVER acknowledged us. They continued preparing the boxes for the large order. They didn't say "Hello", "It will be a minute" or anything! When they finished the To-Go order, the first individual turned to us and asked "What can I get you?" No acknowledgment of our long wait or "Welcome to Panda." We placed our order, he boxed it, and slide the box down the line. There were now more customers behind us in line and he turned to help them. We continued to the cash register and waited for the second individual to arrive to check us out. Again, he did not say a word to us. He simply grabbed the boxes and rang them up. At this point, I told him "I don't know what you just rang up, but that is too many boxes for our order." He had grabbed the food for the individual behind me as well. Perhaps he should have spoken to us, and maybe confirmed our order before ringing it up? He corrected the order but did not say "I'm sorry, "thank you", "have a good evening" or anything. So much for friendly service here now.... or at least last night. I ordered two servings of the Kung Pao Chicken, Fried Rice and Lo Mein. It is nice that they allow you to get 1/2 Fried Rick and 1/2 Lo Mein, and count it as one side. The food was hot, fresh and good. The bins had plenty of options. Also, as we were eating, I was pleased to see the first individual checking the temperature of the food bins. I guess I will sacrifice customer service for good, and safe to eat, food..... but I'd really like both!

If there's holiday pricing, it should be clearly reflected online. Transparency matters. They now charge $1.50 per additional vegetable beyond the cabbage included with the meal. The rice portion was excessive and took up most of the container. My chicken was overcooked, and my seasoning somehow ended up in the shrimp. Everything else lacked any flavoring. I'm pollo-pescatarian, and within 30 minutes, I was dealing with gastrointestinal issues. It felt like there was no separation between proteins when food was cooked, which led to cross-contamination and likely contributed to my getting sick. My husband ordered steak, chicken, and shrimp. He said the steak was overly salty and that both the steak and the chicken were overcooked. Our son ordered steak and chicken hibachi and was so dissatisfied that he ordered steak tacos from another restaurant afterward. Another son ordered the salmon hibachi. The salmon was thin, heavily covered in sauce, overcooked, and the packaging looked sloppy. We spent over $100, excluding the separate order from another restaurant, and as of 2/15, all four containers are still mostly full. That tells you everything.
