Dr. Narinder Mahal has acquired Sun Oaks Dental, our decades long dentistry office. Change is always challenging but we trusted that our former dentists would make sure to entrust our care to only the best and they have!!! Dr. Mahal and support staffer Kayla just performed a root canal on my husband and he came home "totally amazed, astounded, and happily satisfied" with the procedure (and he has had a few!) . He stated he would never be concerned with Sun Oaks Dental again and would be letting others know how wonderful and caring the staff is-Kudos to Lisa in the back office who keeps everything running smoothly! A few weeks ago I received night guard which was recommended to allay the fractures noticed via routine X-rays at my regular cleaning visit. my husband and I had horrible experiences with dr Kirsten and her father dr chang, so we changed our dentist. here those negative reviews mentioned are all true that I don't need to repeat. only need to add one, dr Kristen filled one of my teeth with amalgam without asking my choices and some reason that material was black and addition to that she dropped a big piece on the tooth mistakenly. So I ended up having a black filling and a drop of black dot on my tooth. That wan't all, after 3 month or less the filling began breaking to pieces. The worst of worsts dentist. read more

I went to this dentist from the time I had teeth to the time I was 16. Every time I went there they were always aggressive cleaners but the dad Dr. Chang was my favorite, in fact he was the reason my dad kept me going there. In 2024, his daughter had taken over the practice and she did my wisdom teeth removal. She had started on me and when I told her I felt pain she kept going and said she wasn't going to numb me anymore. I was awake the whole procedure and felt pain. Then after the procedure I was in SO much pain and I could tell something was wrong. I went back to her and she had said "maybe" there was an infection but she wouldn't admit she messed it up. She just sent me back home so I had to go to the ER and get a shot for how much pain I was in and that's when I finally got relief. When I went back to her the LAST time she got extremely mad I went to the ER and she had stated she knew I had an infection and acted like she did all the right things WHICH SHE DIDNT. The hospital was the one that helped me with pain and gave me the meds to help my infection, not her. Do not go here! At least not if she's the doctor. Two years later and my holes never closed up from the wisdom teeth removal. read more

This dental office is so incompetent it's ALMOST funny. Started going here back in 2019 to get dental work for myself and my spouse. I lost my insurance and informed them I would not be able to keep any further appointments. They marked it as a cancellation under 24 hrs and decided to bill me $50 for it. If I just told you I no longer have insurance, what makes you think I have $50 to pay for a cancelled appointment? Years later, my spouse decides he wants to try Sun Oaks out again, which we are immensely regretting. They pulled my tooth, charged my FSA the $50 missed appointment fee from 2019 WITHOUT TELLING ME! My spouse had an appointment for extractions that I cancelled in the office (to await prior authorization from insurance) with them more than 24hrs before the appointment time and they still charged us the $50 missed appointment fee once again. Since they have such a high turnover rate, I have no witnesses to confirm that I cancelled the appointment within a reasonable timeframe. Their automated appointment reminder system sent me a text message on a Saturday to confirm my appointment and ask if I had any systems of Covid 19 to which I responded to promptly. Their system did not recognize the response since I didn't confirm the appointment and once AGAIN they are charging me $50 for a missed appointment fee. To top it off, every-time I have called there I have spoken to a different and new employee who then tells me someone will call me back, to which no one ever does. By the time I do speak with someone, that previous employee is no longer employed there. They are charging interest and finance fees on missed appointments. They love to blame their high turnover rate and disorganized management on the patients charging them hundreds in false fees. I will be reporting this to the health board as well as the better business bureau. read more

l was a patient under Dr. Richard Chang for years before my move. I was happy with his services. I even referred three more patients to his office. Summer of 2022, l was looking for a dentist. l returned to Sun Oaks Dental. Dr. Kristen Chang took over the office. The office administrator assured me she would get pre-approval from my insurance company prior to my service date. After the service, I was billed for a discrepancy of a full mouth x-ray which the office overlooked and did not get a pre-approval. When I called and talked to the administrator about this mistake, she told me that I should allow "her" to take care of this matter. Six months later, out of the blue, I got the same bill from this office. This time, I asked to talk to Dr. Kristen Chang for customer feedback for paying for her staff's mistake. Not only did she not return my call, but Instead, she turned me over to a collection agency?! Well, since Dr. Kristen Chang won't talk to me privately. I will share my unpleasant experience publicly until then. read more

This was a 5 star plus dentist. I drive 45 min one way from Elk Grove for 17 years ! To say I was a loyal patient is an understatement! My last visit left me treated very poorly! I was already very sore, with an autoimmune flare. Half way up to my appointment, they called to tell me my regular hygienist would not be in. (I would have rescheduled if I knew this in advance.). Since I was at the half way point of driving, I continued. I was hurting and now concerned that my regular lady was not there. Upon arrival, they wanted my very extensive medical history again! To make it worse, my eyes were slightly blurry and the very poor copy quality of the questionnaire was impossible to read. The lady glared at me when I declined to have her fill out the pages of history. Her non-verbal demeanor was absolutely terrible! I couldn't believe that after 17 years I was treated so badly. I decided to drive home and seek another dentist. After 2 months I was billed 50$ to add insult to injury! I will never ever recommend nor return to this dental practice. My original dentist retired. His wife cleaned my teeth. I went from feeling safe to thrown out like garbage. How sad that the new office staff is so terrible! I'm heartbroken. Really- lie to me, treat me badly, and charge 50$ after 17 years and 45 minutes of driving! read more

My daughter is grown, with children of her own. But after SIX WEEKS of dental pain, wisdom teeth extractions, and still not getting better, I reached out to a friend who just happens to work at Sun Oaks. Our first miracle was that Dr. Kirsten actually answered the phone, at a time I later learned was actually AFTER regular office hours. When I told her my daughter's situation, with ZERO hesitation, she said: "Come on in." Within less than 2 hours, we left there with the pain 100% GONE. I'll be honest. He was a bit stern with her. She wasn't exactly all warm & fuzzy when we left. But she was very clear that her mouth did not hurt anymore! And this morning, when the pain was still gone she told me she didn't care if he was nice or not. He knows what he's doing & for us, for my daughter, he SAVED THE DAY. This is seriously the best dentist I have ever been to. I have been to a few others and NOTHING comes close to these guys. It's such a warm and caring environment. Everyone is very friendly and makes sure you are as comfortable as you can be. A father and daughter are the main dentists there which also makes things feel more warming. I trust their practice and everything they tell me. I just recently got my wisdom teeth out and they knew I was VERY nervous. They took such great care of me and any time I had a slight bit of discomfort they immediately made it go away. They talked me through everything they are doing which helps a lot. I am no longer scared or anxious to go to the dentist for regular cleanings. You will not regret going here! They are also taking COVID-19 precautions very seriously which is great too. read more

Let me preface this review by saying, I am sweating, shaking absolutely terrified of the dentist. I was seen by Dr. Kirsten Chang yesterday, and not only was she kind, gentle, patient and overall awesome, the rest of the staff was as well. I came in as an emergency walk in, in tremendous pain, and they were able to see me and fix me right up. My tooth had a 50/50 shot between a filling and a root canal, and I opted for the filling. Over night, the tooth made it very clear that a root canal was the way it needed to go. Dr. Kirsten was able to see me at 7am this morning and performed my root canal. I can't believe I'm saying this about a dental visit, but it was truly a pleasure being there! I just found a new dentist for myself and my son! read more

She really made sure i was comfortable before doing anything. I have been going here for years, my whole family!! My husband had a appointment this am and my son tomorrow.. my husband goes in for his appointment they take him back so his cleaning and after at checkout say he owes $300!! And that they are not accepting Aetna anymore and that they mailed out letters to inform.. we never got a letter, just a bill from them saying I owed money which in fact he brought that up and they said I owed nothing, my husband pays the 300 and then he me to inform me... I call up there and get no help.. why would you not ask him before taking him back to do cleaning if he was aware of the dropping of insurance?? Or even ask me yesterday when you called to confirm appointment!! Why would I want to pay 300$ for a cleaning!! Horrible customer service, seems like they do not care about keeping long term customers , more just a money things with them!! So i went to this dentist office from the reccomendation of a trusted friend. I really liked the dentist and staff. I needed a filling replaced and an additional filling. I had to pay fifty extra dollars as co pay because this dentist was not on my insurance provider list, which was fine. Even though i have never done this before. So i get xrays, cleaning. Now comes the problem... once i go to schedule my appt which was going to be the next day they direct me to billing. The billing person gives me some rediculous amount that it will be for the two fillings. I have had this insurance for many many yrs. i know what it covers, which is a lot 90 percent, with xrays and cleanings free. So they tell me over 300 dollars... i tell them this doesnt sound right. She insists i schedule the appt. i tell her "no" and that i would like to look in to it because it is way more than i ever pay out of pocket. As i am walking out the door she says"oh wait i figured it out, you were right". So she has me schedule the appt. i come the next day, get fillings, and pay what i believed i owed. A few weeks later i recieve a bill in the mail saying i owe the 300 . Completely rediculous! So im annoyed and think these are some major scammers! Wait it gets better! So i recieve a courtesy payment reminder every month, reminding me that i owe. So now its six months later... oh yes i had already scheduled for next cleaning before i knew what they were about. I dont dare go back. So low and behold, after missing appt. i get a call saying i dont owe any more. Funny that for last six months i got reminded every month... and had i paid it?? They did say i still owe 60 for my daughter, but thats funny because all she got was cleaning and xray which is covered 100%. This office keeps calling me.. on weekends... leave me alone.. go scam somewhere else! I was telling a coworker about this... she said she went there about ten yrs ago... same story... overcharged! Drs. Richard and Kirsten Chang have always treated me and my family with the best possible dental care. I've been coming to Sun Oaks Dental for many many years, ever since I was a child, and even though I travel extensively for work and don't spend much consistent time in the Sacramento area anymore, I am a very loyal patient and would never go anywhere else. I make sure to work around my travels to be able to continue receiving dental care from Dr. Rick and Dr. Kirsten Chang. One time, almost 10 years ago, I fainted in the middle of the night and knocked out one of my front teeth. Dr. Chang (Rick) met me at the office at some crazy hour to tend to my bleeding mouth and prep me for an emergency root canal. I've had my teeth cleaned by virtually all of the hygienists who work in the office and I have never had an unsatisfactory experience. All of the staff is kind, courteous, professional, respectful, and just plain pleasant to interact with on an interpersonal level. If you are seeing a dentist in the Sacramento area, do yourself the favor and visit the Changs! I cannot recommend Sun Oaks Dental highly enough. read more

I cannot thank Sara (receptionist) and Tamika (xray) enough for calming and reassuring me as we were getting starting. Both Dr. Richard Chang and Dr. Kirsten Chang spent time with me since I was new - even though they had a couple emergencies in the office that day and were very busy. Their philosophy, manner and patience was so reassuring that I felt like they truly care about the wellbeing of their patients and in giving the best and most appropriate care. I went to this dentist in 2014. I have had superb teeth, always flossed and brushed and have been always complimented on my smile by strangers and family and friends. It was the one thing that I was most proud of (after an extensive orthodontic treatment). My old doc left so I found this doctor. The first thing he said..."you have a very gummy smile. I have a Harvard doc who I'll give you a referral to go see to have it fixed". My smile is not gummy, my gums probably stick out about 1/8" when I smile. If the dentists method was to create sever self consciousnesses about their smile...bravo he succeeded. I've now been ashamed and hiding my smile and won't go to another dentist. I do not recommend anyone to go to him (not sure how his wife and daughter are) but absolutely not him. Horrible bedside manner. Yes, I wrote this almost a year + after but it's because he's words left scars. read more

My husband has been having teeth pain for a while, but didn't want to go to the dentist out of fear. I had been to Sun Oaks recently to get my teeth cleaned and was impressed by their service, so I called them and they said they could get my husband in within the next couple hours. I was able to get my husband to agree to go and as soon as we went in they were incredibly helpful. Dr. Chang and Dr. Kirsten Change were incredibly patient, explaining what was going on and what my husband needed to get done to relieve the pain. (A root canal.) They let us have a few minutes to talk before my man agreed that he needed to get this done. They let me sit in the room with them while they did the procedure and everything went smoothly. Thanks to Sun Oaks Dental and their wonderful staff, my husband is no longer afraid of the Dentist, even after getting a root canal! Before Sun Oaks Dental, every experience that I had with a dental office was horrific. My prior insurance policy gave me the absolute minimal, not just with what procedures were covered but staff as well. I dealt with rude receptionists & dentists with absolute appalling bedside manner. Once my insurance was upgraded & I registered with Sun Oaks dental, I must have scheduled and cancelled about 5 appointments. When I finally dragged myself in I was terrified. Now I am so so glad I overcame those fears & am so blessed to have Dr. Richard & Kirsten Chang as my attending dentists. Not only that but their receptionists are amazing. I was referred by a friend who has been a long time patient of Sun Oak Dental. I've been looking for a local dentist for quite some time now and I'm so happy I decided to go with Dr. Chang and his team. They were so welcoming and very thorough. I had my first appointment two days ago for a check up at 6:45AM. The time was perfect since I work at 9AM and they're only 15 minutes away from my job. Dr. Chang was very informative and the staff is awesome (so friendly)! Unfortunately, I didn't have time for a cleaning that day but I went in for one today at 7AM (yes! Score! Another early morning appointment!) and got there around 6:50AM. They took me in within minutes of arriving there. They did their magic and I came out with a clean set of teeth. The hygienist did a wonderful job! I wish I knew her name so I could shout her out! I'll definitely stick with Sun Oak Dental. I have been coming to this dental office for many. many years & I do not think I would ever go anywhere else. The staff is great & really make me feel like family every time I go in there. Dr. Richard & Dr. Kristen are amazing at the work they do & are very good at explaning what needs to be done and they dont push things on you. They also have always understood my finacial problems and still treated me with respect & didn't make me feel like I was in trouble.
