I didn't have time to stop by that day and thought I'd like to get some feedback from previous customers first before calling and so I yelped it. I know it's usually the other way around. :) Pleased with the Yelp reviews, I called and agreed to come and bring my rings. Jaime (the jeweler and owner) was busy with a bunch of repair/alteration orders so my rings took a few days to get resized but it was well worth the wait! They came out perfect! The new size was comfortable and much needed, the rings were sparkly clean and looked like new! The Bench Jewelry also has beautiful items for sale. I didn't get to browse much but hoping to come back soon.

Reasonable prices, and he is patient to explain what is going on mechanically with your watch. Jaime has saved me hundreds of dollars thus far. For example I purchased a watch on line from Ashford and when it arrived the second hand sweep did not work although other parts of it did. Perplexing, and so I contacted Ashford for a replacement and told it was not available. Decided to check and see if the watch could be fixed and I found The Bench Jeweler on YELP. Jaime diagnosed a weak battery and explained why some features worked and some did not. Thank You! Come check out his beautiful jewelry and other items for sale, many are used and in fine shape. You will be glad that you did. Watch repair is a lost art and Jaime has years of experience.

Ruined an antique 1920s ring. Claims to be a master jeweler with 40 years of experience absolutely…read morehorrible experience. Lost the ring for several hours too!! We got engaged in Monterey and my fiancée and I decided to get her new antique ring sized to fit her (it was too big) we were referred to Steve Saunders. We went in there and he told us no problem! It'll be $75 he then sized her finger. She told him she was a 5 she showed him she was currently wearing a size 5 but he was adamant she was a 4.... So trusting his "40 years" we went with his Recommendation. An hour later he calls us and tells us it's ready so we head back and when we get there it reeks of pot and incense... and he says he misplaced the ring.... He asked us to leave for 5 minutes and come back so he could find it.... So we did and came back and he said he would look more and call us tomorrow... umm no how about you stay open till you find our ring??? Later that evening he calls us he found it so we rush back... the ring DOESNT COME CLOSE TO FITTING... what's worse is he tries jamming it on her finger bruising her finger... he then says well you measured a size 4 so you are a 4... even though it clearly didn't fit.... He then tried hammering it out and making it bigger that didn't work... again he said come back tomorrow.... So tomorrow comes and we message him and tells us him it needs to be a size 5 he tells us the only way to do that is to replace the band... goodbye 1920s gold.... So what choice do we have.... We go back that afternoon and he gives us the ring and it looks awful... the band is dented and uneven on both sides... the width is so off it's not funny and the gold doesn't match.... Then he has the audacity to try and charge us $450 for his mistakes. We ended up paying $150 when we shouldn't have paid a penny and we left. Now we have to go a real jeweler and have his work fixed / replaced he should pay for it but of course that won't happen. The absolute worst part of all is this antique ring is forever ruined

Pearl Factory - Loved the open bracelet with two pearls

    Pearl Factory

Saturday afternoon and we were taking in the sights at Monterey Cannery Row. Stopped in at the…read morePearl Factory because this girl does love pearls. Both employees were very friendly and greeted everyone as they entered the store. I waited patiently to see the items in their glass displays, but I was growing a bit inpatient as it took a while. After the young man was finished helping his customer, he walked over and showed me the items I wanted to see. The first item was a necklace with the gold chain and pearls spaced in between. It was a cute pearl chain however it was a bit over my budget at a cost of $1200.00. In my opinion I felt it was way overpriced. The second item was a bracelet with an opening and two pearls. It was a bit more reasonable at $800.00 however I decided to pass on this on too.

I chose to visit Monterey recently for a little piece of home, and I wanted to visit my favorite…read moresmall businesses at Cannery Row. Stunned, I saw that stores changed around some and new businesses stepped in--one being the Pearl Factory. What drew me to the Pearl Factory? I had time to kill before my reservation at El Torito and the novelty of choosing an oyster for a pearl. Their whole ritual felt insufferably cringe. As a cultural bearer and beader, I can confirm that they drilled the indignity of cringe into my person through tourist-trap k'omé nonsense. I can confirm that this what justifies the $18 price (before tax) * $12-15 for a B-Grade round pearl (at least 1, as marketed, because some oyster may contain more) * $2 for choosing the oyster * Complimentary cleaning of the pearl and drilling into the pearl to mount it What cheapened the experience? * The opening ritual: easily the first embarrassment. There was no need to make a public announcement for the opening that involved a big bell. I was not comfortable with it, and expressed discomfort in it for the whole "aloha" shout. It cut out $10 of the experience for me. * The lack of knowledge from the sales clerk and overselling basic metal-smithing methods undermined the experience. I am a jeweler trained for beadwork and smithing, and the sales clerk tried to convince me the lost wax casting system as an exotic commodity to convince me to buy a setting for the pearl. I kindly remarked that I do silver-smithing and am familiar with the process. They then tried to sell me on the metaphysics of the pearl in Polynesian cultures, which sounded more like 1950s tourist trap lingo and unpublished EXCEPT for the Tahitian pearls, which I confirmed as honest. They lacked a history of Monterey bay's own western pearlshell, the freshwater mussel that is a protected species traditionally used to make jewelers by local Native Nations, and it showed. This cuts into by $5. * Pushing customers to buy a mount for the pearl or having the choose your pearl as a complimentary to a $99+ purchase. A couple of other customers looked around the store during the same time and I paid attention to how they were served, too. After having my pearl drilled for mounting, the sales clerk kept pushing me to buy a mount there, but I kindly told her that I planned on using it for my beading practice. That only changed the topic to encourage me to post my work to credit the business. At the same time, she and another clerk pressed the couple in the store to buy a pearl bracelet. They also looked uncomfortable, but dragged along. Personally, all the designs in the shop were tacky and mass produced. The store lacked signs crediting the designers, or anything that held a significant touch like an explanation card for the symbolism of the setting. It made the jewelry worthless to me and not an investment in art and taste. My experience summed up is best a shoddy $4 cocktail trumped up to $20.50 (after tax as of this posting). This is confirmed when I spoke to the small businesses in Cannery Row who remarked how predatory Pearl Factory is to its customers, which transformed into a mini-salon on the second floor with other folks targeted by Pearl Factory's practices. If you are looking for novelty with sincerity, then I recommend the long-standing businesses in the area. The consensus from the gathering recommended Kochiya Pearls & Gems if you are staying within the Cannery Row area.
