Old school HK tea cafe along Hastings. This place used to be Penny, which is one of the OG restaurants in the area. Guessing they changed owners. Parking is available in the lot in front, as well as along Hastings. The place is quite bare bones. The only "artwork" on the walls have to do with social distancing. Staff are friendly and helpful. No complaints. Pricing is in line with the competition. Stir fried spaghetti with black pepper sauce - nice spicy kick. Decent amount of meat. Sweet and sour pork - decent sized portion. Tastes exactly like one would expect. I'm glad the food quality hasn't changed since the Penny days. Wouldn't mind coming back in the future. Recommended. read more

This is a Hong Kong Cafe style restaurant. I recently tried it for the first time as they were offering buy 1 get 1 free for some items. I tried the "baked spaghetti with chicken fillet and meat sauce". For $14.95, which is standard for a full sized version, not the "tea time mini version" When it came, it was in an aluminum container which most use; however the amount given is very deflated. It filled up half the container. The chicken filet is very tiny and only had 3 pieces. Other places would give a bigger piece that covers at least half the spaghetti. Some places even give 2 chicken filets. The sauce itself was tasty. I also ordered the salt and chili pepper fried squid. The taste is quite good with spices flavor coating each squid. Overall, it has competitive prices but the quantity is less. The buy one get one free is a really good deal though. read more

Lunch: Baked Rice with Pork Chop and Fresh Tomatoes Baked Rice with Chicken in Portuguese Sauce I got two of each dishes as there is an ubereats promotion Buy 1 Get 1 Free. Regular price is $14.95 each dishes, so now it's about $7.50. This is my second time to give this place another try. Their dishes are mediocre or substandard. The colors of the food are not that appetizing to me. They look so dull. The fried rice are so soggy. It has the eggs in the fried rice but I guess they use fresh made rice not overnight cold rice to make the fried rice. So failed. ‍ Baked Rice with Pork Chop and Fresh Tomatoes come with mushroom, onions, tomatoes and 1 piece of deep fried pork chop. The tomato sauce doesn't have enough flavor of ketchup and tomato paste. They only use parmasen powder on top of the dishes. The deep fried pork chop is not crunchy at all. Baked Rice with Chicken in Portuguese Sauce has the rice packed separately from the dishes. The chickens are in a smaller container compared to the Baked Rice with Pork Chop. Why the rice is not as same as the desciption baked rice? Well the portugese sauce is very watery ... I guess that's why they separate the rice from the chicken with sauce... It comes with potatoes, celery, tomatoes, onions, peppers. The chicken dices seemed like few pieces here and there from chicken legs leftover. Well, if you just want to fill up your tummy, they are definitely good in term of price and the amount of ingredients. I guess I shouldn't complaint much if it's just $7.5 each.. Now if you're looking for a simple HK cafe, Sun Yee Cafe fits the bill. A classic mix of 'traditional' HK style food with a touch of western flair. They got the combos that you'd expect. All the combos seemed to come with daily soup and your choice of drink (coffee/ tea, extra for cold). Most of the combos are under $12, which won't break your wallet. The portions are pretty good for the price, and you'll likely be pretty full after words or taking home leftovers. It's been awhile since a review was written so to celebrate I decided to visit Sun Yee Cafe on Hastings St in Vancouver. This restaurant is a Hong Kong style cafe 'cha chang teng'. As of writing the restaurant is offering 30% off indoor dining between 3-5pm, which is usually the slower time between lunch and dinner. Upon stepping in I was greeted by whom I can guess to be the boss lady 'lo ban lurng'. She was friendly and directed me to a traditional HK style booth seat. Great! Hot tea and menus were brought and I ordered the baked spaghetti with shredded chicken in cream sauce. With it came a complimentary hot drink, so I ordered a hot HK style milk tea. Milk tea was hot, but was light on flavour. While I waited for my food the boss lady asked if I wanted a complimentary soup - cream soup or borscht. Wonderful! Soup was hot, tasted great. Not salty. Had perfectly cooked mushy vegetables! The restaurant's indoor dining isn't too busy, but pickups and takeout orders were busy. Food came and the boss lady advised me the plate was piping hot and to not touch it. I dug in and the food is tasty! The noodles were al dente..nice chunks of succulent chicken, melted cheese and most importantly delicious thin sliced mushrooms. I will return in a heart beat. The staff carried an upbeat enthusiastic and friendly customer service mindset. One of the best HK style cafés 'cha chan tengs' I've been to - way better than ones in Richmond I'd wager! A quick Google would show this HK style cafe has an old address just east of the current one. I can't say if it's the same business because I never went to the last one. This is your typical HK cafe with western style baked rice/spaghetti, French toast, sandwiches, lots of options for Cantonese stir fry noodles and rice. It looks so bright and new from the outside and I wish I could say the same for the inside. It's definitely new from what I could tell from the flooring to the walls to the booths' cream-colored cushions (poor choice of color btw). However, it's also very bland and no design went into this space. So ambiance wise, I give it a sad 2 stars. It's not hole-in-the-wall type because it's not rundown yet but give it a year or so. Now, onto its food. They provide a laminated double sided menu which is offered til 5pm. From what I can tell, the dishes are a few dollars less than the regular menu and you get a hot drink. I decided to order the baked meat sauce spaghetti as that is a true HK style cafe classic. My friends ordered baked Portuguese sauce with seafood and another with chicken, both accompanied with white rice. I have to say I wasn't super impressed with the look of the baked spaghetti because the cheese on top was pretty skimpy. After mixing it all together, I find there is a good amount of sauce coverage and the taste was fairly good. So good that I wish the portions were slightly bigger. It could be because it's the 'combo deal' price?? This might be the first time I have seen a baked rice with Portuguese sauce where the rice came on the side. I have seen curries presented like that but never this kind. I don't think it affects the taste, just different. One thing I have an issue with was my drink. I ordered a hot HK style milk tea with coffee (another classic I have to say) and my cup was only 2/3 full. My friend's hot lemon tea served in the same size mug was almost full to the top. To be honest, I felt a little gypped. It have been better to serve the drink in a smaller mug if that was the quantity to be served but don't use a mug that you're not going to fill to the top. I didn't end up saying anything as I just had a cup of coffee so I didn't mind drinking less but that's not the point. The taste of the drink....I forgot. This place honestly didn't blow me away. The lady taking our orders seemed new too which is perfectly fine. I don't know if I am a returning customer because although it is convenient for me, there are plenty of options only a short distance away. read more

Every few years, this location changes hands and is presented with a new name. I was sad to see the previous restaurant close as it was my go to for cheap neighborhood Chinese eats but I was very excited to give this cafe a try! The interior was refreshed and looks nicer. Clean, nothing fancy. What you'd expect. Service, is what you'd expect from a HK style cafe. Not bad, not great. They take your order, you get your food. The menu had all the favorites you'd expect from an HK style cafe. I went for my go-to, the Portuguese chicken and rice. It was not what I was used to. I think this was the first time I had it come with rice on the side. The sauce was very watery and there wasn't much flavor. I also felt the portion was really small in comparison to other HK cafes. It was enough to fill up there for sure (mostly cause of the rice), but I'm used to having left overs to take home I guess. It was a lot of rice, a lot of veggies, some sauce, and a bit of chicken. Unfortunately I was disappointed. That said, my mom got the curry beef and I gave it a try. It was really good! Portion size was fairly similar though. I wish the portions were bigger but I guess for $12.95 with a soup and hot drink included, it wasn't terrible.. there's just better value to be had elsewhere. I use to go to this restaurant for their low price mini meals. Today I returned after a few years and will never return!! We went in, there was only the one lady working which appeared to be the owner, we found our own table. She then appears and throws the menus on the table. She then returns with tea and practicly threw them at us. She was with ear buds on when we said hi She either never heard us or ignored us which I believe was the case. Another man obviously a regular who She instantly served while we waited. We tried to get her attention yo place our order and she again went off and ignored us. At this point we walked out and I never do that. There was no one in the restaurant and she could have prepared the takeout prior or on hold till we were served then return to tge orders. She doesn't know how to prioritize. It was such a better place before I'd say it was because I'm white but in this case I was with 2 Asian friends and maybe it still was for me being white but either way she was extremely rude ignorant, unfriendly and totally unprofessional. Saw in uber eats that they were offering BOGO on select dishes so thought I'd give it a try. We got fried rice, chili garlic shrimp, baked cod fish and baked pork chops in tomato sauce. All dishes were great. The flavors were in point and they didn't skimp on the portions despite the BOGO deal. The food was still hot when our order was delivered. Would definitely order from sun yee again and try the other dishes they were offering. read more
