Let me start with last Thursday as we rolled into the Keys and after a couple hours in the car everyone was famished. It had been a minute since we had last been in the Keys and we stumbled across Sundowners. We looked at the menu and thought, "this is it"! As we walked in the tables were barren, no music and couldn't find anyone who worked there. Finally a young man sat us at an inside table (we were in the midst of a gnarly heatwave), and after about 10 min, our waiter, who we came to know as, Sebastian appeared with waters. We asked if the AC was on and if they could put some music on. At this point we decided to order two apps as we were no longer convinced this was "it". After waiting an exceptionally long time, out came the, "shrimp-cargot" and the Cajun peel and eat & it was so spectacular we quickly ordered one more of each. We then started on the drinks, the pain remover . . . And it did just that removed an negative emotions we were feeling about the initial experience. Two days later on Saturday, we decided to pop in for lunch and to our surprise we walked in and they were packed inside and outside. On this day we had a new waiter Gabriel and although it was his first day (and technically training), it was more like baptism by fire and he rose to the occasion! We ordered the same dishes from Thursday and added Mahi fingers and again just as fabulous as it was on Thursday. I then found the manager, Jasmine to let her know how exceptional the food was . . . A bit slow on getting out of the kitchen, but they seem to have all new staff and are working out the kinks. We ended up right back there tonight as we leave tomorrow and had Rachel as our server and she was an old pro & on point! We had the Key Lime Seafood dish with lobster and shrimp and the flavors were phenomenal and all the seafood cooked to perfection! We met Mo another manager and he too has been in the industry for a while and I think will smooth out the staff kinks! I'll just say - be patient. As we all know, good things come to those who wait and it's sooooo worth the wait!! Really cool restaurant on the water in Key Lago. It was very scenic and food was very good. I ate lite because my Sister was taking me out for din er later but everything I saw looked great. There specialty drinks could use a little more of a kick. I had a Mojito and Margherita. The coconut shrimp were definitely filling. Bon Apetit. read more

Service was terrible. The restaurant was dirty. The door handle from the back patio into the restaurant was filthy. Our server dumped the water from our oyster dish to the patio below. I do have to say that the food was delicious but our server was very slow. I don't think we'll be going back. read more

The most disappointing experience I have had in a long time. Service was awful. It took us two hours to get our lunch and it was also awful. This used to be our go to spot in the keys so maybe they changed owners or something . Everyone on the staff looked angry and were walking around seemingly doing nothing. Took forever to bring us our drinks. Then we ask for water and they just never brought it. Ordered 2 lobster bisque soups and bacon wrapped scallops. They take forever to only bring us one soup and not the right one they brought clam chowder. Then they tell us the runner took our scallops to another table so we'll have to wait for them to make new ones and they were cold. Manager came to apologize and offer a free slice of key lime pie. I'm not gonna mince words here. It is what it is. Don't expect more. When you drive up you get a sense of the type of food you will get and perhaps the service. What makes Sundowners a great place to visit is the view. If you are able to get a table outside, I recommend during sunset. Yes, sunset, hence the name. The food is mediocre for sure. It is pricey for what it is, mostly bar food, burgers, sandwiches, ribs, etc. So, if you go in with that mindset, you won't be disappointed. They have some cocktails, which are somewhat kitchy, but hey, it is a tourist spot. Service was also mediocre. The place is big, I get it, but I also got the impression that the staff wasn't trained very well, especially in multitasking. So, if you decide to go, then go. Get some burgers and fries, a margarita and enjoy the sunset. read more

What a great discovery on the sunset side of Key Largo!! This restaurant sits on the same "cove" as Senor Frijoles and a bar next to it (forget the name) as well as some fishing outfitters right on the water. They have a pier if you're visiting from the sea side: you can dock and walk to the restaurant. We arrived early (say 4:30?) so actual sunset watching (was around 8:20) would've meant drinking wayyyy more than we could since we were driving back to our Fort Lauderdale home-base that evening lol! But still... a couple of drinks to chill by the bay and watch the fun water sports were definitely called for. This venue sits right next to a waterspout rental and "the Big Chill" (another chill place with a band we will go to next time) so it was a lot of fun watching people take off and return with their jet skis: made for some water-front entertainment. Sundowners also has live music! On the front patio (we were seated on the side deck) they have tables and a performer- the bar is also on that side. The restaurant also has a big indoor area if you want more AC for these hot summer days. So as you can tell: I loved the location, set up, the service!! Well: there is a notice up front letting you all know they are short-staffed and to please excuse delays... what delays? Perhaps that "lowered my expectations " But our service was great! Prompt, fast, always on the lookout if he. Prices our glass were dangerously lowering... just all around awesome! So we started with some hurricanes. No floater. Ugh they were too sweet... we ordered 2 shots of rum... well this is the tip of the day: get the shots separately cause those were loaded and our hurricanes were da best! Lol Then we got the bacon wrapped scallops that were absolutely delish and big sized. I was gonna order another set for dinner (yes not for sharing- they were that good!) but we noticed they had sushi as well! So we went the sushi route (we were not that hungry) and ordered a T- special and the rainbow sushi roll. Both rolls were excellent, fresh, well made, but what I really enjoyed was that the pieces were truly bite-sized! They cut the roll into thinner slices, making it easier to just grab one and enjoy- lol (I have sushi issues with the big pieces) these were perfect for "tapas" and very filling too. So... after sitting outdoor and enjoying good music, good food, great vibes and a fun afternoon chill- we finished with the Key lime pie: we got the last piece. It was very good, a bit too sweet for me, definitely tart aa I like it: it had lost some crust (it was the last piece) so they actually comped it for us since it was irregular: we truly showed our appreciation on the tip because: now we know that when we return, and we will, we need to save room for the key lime pie! Go visit them next time you take a lazy drive down to the keys on a Saturday afternoon... or if you're there looking for good food, good mood, and a fabulous sunset facing place: worth it!! read more

Sundowners is a great water front dining location in Key Largo. I've done a few day trips down to Key Largo, and it's a great place to relax and grab a frozen drink. Their pina coladas are out of this world, with toasted coconut. We had our rehearsal dinner here for our wedding, and they were very accommodating with vegetarian options and had pretty table decorations. We had a large group and they were very accommodating. I think they recently changed their menu because they don't have as many vegetarian options on the regular menu as I remember. We got a few sides, which was still yummy. First time at Sundowners and we will definitely be going back! The manager, Shane, was very attentive upon arrival, making sure we got a great table with a beautiful view! Our server, Giana, was lovely and made great suggestions. She had a great attitude when dealing with our 4 {funny} boys! The food and drinks were on point! Horrible service. Waited for 45 minutes for appetizers and then entrees came 2 minutes later. I think the do nothing manager was the biggest disappointment. The service staff was weeded and definitely could have used his assistance. Food was average and not the main issue although my daughter's pasta was inedible. This was a great place for lunch. I suggest bringing your own fish. We finished with a fishing trip just next door and brought it over to be cooked. We had snapper and trout and had it prepared 2 different ways- Fernando (tomato, crab, butter, and some spices) and key lime capers. It was amazing. Came here to see the 1st annual Stone Crab eating contest. Grabbed some food and drinks before the festivities started. The coconut shrimp was plentiful, which is good considering the appetizer was $17.99. The flavor was not bad, but I have definitely tasted better. Joshua the bartender was great, super friendly and nice. Definitely recommend the Key Lime Martini if you're a fan of Key Lime pie. Although I must say the graham cracker that covered the rim of the martini glass was a disappointment as I encountered soggy crumbs instead of crunchy bits. All service personnel were super friendly, one thing I love about the Keys, everyone is very hospitable. I can't say much about the food considering I just ate an appetizer, but if you want to catch a nice sunset, this is definitely the place to do it! read more

This place is not as good as I remember it from years ago. For one thing it's way too loud: someone brought a barking dog for dinner and a Jimmy Buffet guy was playing loud music on stage. The beautiful view on the patio was plenty good without these distractions and their cacophony. ( Instead of the Jimmy Buffet guy, why not get Warren Buffet to sit on the little stage cutting coupons out of newspaper, as WB claims he does, instead? My friend & I stopped in for lunch yesterday on our way back up the Keys. Though it was a Friday, we were seated right away at an outside patio table with shade and a beautiful ocean view. The Calamari starter tasted really fresh & was perfectly cooked. My friend ordered the Fish & Chips (Cod fish) and was very pleased. It arrived hot & fresh with a light, non-greasy, crunchy batter. She's a little thing, but cleaned her plate! I ordered the Sushi T Roll....omg, I can't believe how delicious it was! We eat Sushi regularly & this was right up there with best. Everyone enjoyed their food selection and the drinks were pretty good but the service was super slow. Went down there for lunch. Had Sangria, conch fritter, oysters, and shrimp & steak kabob. I'm glad I ordered lots of appetizers since portion for my main dish kabob was pretty small. Conch fritter was good. Their signature sangria was pretty good too, not watered down at all. My bf had lobster grilled cheese and he said it was good (little too rich but still very good indeed). I really liked their pricing on raw oysters. When I went it was $10 for half dozen! That's cheap coming from east coast. However I got really sick that afternoon and I'm suspecting food poisoning from oysters. Usually raw oysters should be very cold but they were not as chill as I was used to...I thought it was weird but still went with it so just be little more careful. This place lets you feed tarp on the deck. When we went it was too windy so couldn't really do it. That alone should be a good reason to go here. Ate dinner here tonight. Nice outdoor area and the drinks were on par for a tourist restaurant here. Both had the Key Lime Seafood which was not as good as it should have been. One of the lobsters was un-eatable and stunk, the other lobster was 1/2 good the rest was stinky. One of the shrimp was stinky seafood and both rice portions were 1/2 cooked rice, hard chewy mess. For the absolutely poor seafood they gave us 10% off the food portion of the bill. Not sure I would return here with this poor seafood served to us. read more

First, the view from outside was beautiful during sunset! My mom and I came down to Key Largo from our trip to Miami and this place was pretty cool! We ordered the conch fritters and oyster lobsterfeller to start and both set the bar really high because they were delicious! I would definitely recommend! Next we ordered the crab cakes and the seafood and steak kabob. The crab cakes were decent and so were the kabobs.
