We arrived at Sundowners after reading some poor reviews online, so needless to say we weren't expecting much. We were seated quickly outside on the patio, which was great because it was about 30 minutes before sunset. The menu was a little overwhelming so we went for the Keys classic of Conch Fritters as an appetizer. I ordered a beer and my wife wanted a non-alcoholic drink menu. My wife is pregnant so the waiter did let us know that the bartender would make any of their signature drinks "virgin" for her, this was the first place all weekend that offered that so she was excited about that. The drinks and appetizer was great, seriously if you're in the keys and don't order conch fritters, there's something wrong with you. For dinner I ordered the Millionaire Steak Sandwich with a side of Lobster Mac and Cheese, the waiter let me know that he recommended the Crab Mac and Cheese because you will get more meat in the Mac. My wife ordered the Shrimp and Scallop Orecchiette. The food took a bit longer than expected to arrive but it was hot and fresh, however the meal they brought for my wife was wrong. The waiter took it back to the kitchen and had a new order made on the fly and he arrived with it very quickly! The food was all amazing and the service was great! We will definitely return here in the future for dinner! Side note...I hope you like cats. It seems there is a friendly cat that wanders the outdoor dining area, he/she sticks to him/herself though. Just FYI...if you're allergic. Most places in the keys seem to be pet friendly, so don't be surprised to see a furry friend at any business. read more

Sundowners a Let-Downer Three of us came to eat on a Monday night. We first ordered three waters and asked if they had an IPA, our server said she was new and wasn't sure. Fine. I looked at the menu and ordered the only IPA option. She came back with TWO waters and the beer awhile later. We then ordered two appetizers, an additional water and a Manhattan. It again took a long time to get the drink and another water. At that time she asked if we wanted to order anything else. My husband ordered the Mahi finger basket. She asked if my mother and I wanted anything and we told her we would just be picking at the appetizers. She looked at us a little confused but took our menus. I had a sinking feeling she did not remember our first order. I should have doubled down on that feeling when she came back a few minutes later and couldn't remember what my husband ordered. My husbands mahi fingers came out a long while later. His water had been sitting empty. We were never given silverware and he had to grab a ketchup off another table for his fries. The fries were really good. The fish was fresh and did not taste frozen. The breading was light and crispy but could have used a bit more salt or seasoning. I'm sure the food we ordered probably would have been pretty good but we never did find out. The server came over and completely had no idea we had ordered anything else until we reminded her. We just asked for the check. At this point we had been there for AN HOUR. One beer, one drink and mahi fingers came in just under $42. She did not offer any kind of apology. A good server would comp a drink or offer a complimentary desert or SOMETHING. I hate leaving bad reviews for bad service bc I understand that people have off days. But the ball was dropped from start to finish. She clearly was not adequately prepared to be on the floor solo yet. There's only like 8 beers on your list. Before you are out serving you should know what they are. And if you are frazzled and having a difficult time remembering, write it down. With the plethora of great restaurants to choose from in the Keys I doubt we will be going back anytime soon. read more

Pros- great fish dip and great sunset ambience. Cons- decent service from yeah wait staff. Requesting different table upset hostess and less than optimal seating before walking away during off peak hours with plenty of open tables. The food was great!! The service was lacking but it wasn't really the waiters fault. The waiters are obviously overworked. After slow service at the table we decided to order a pie to-go from the bar. There was 2 bartenders and then one clocked out without bussing or stocking anything up. He left 1 girl there with no reception paper and a lot of trash on tables. The girl was doing her best. We got our pie but still had to pay so we're were stacking plates and cups for here. The manager (I'm assuming) came over and she "why are y'all doing that" and we said "we're trying to help she seems overworked" and the manager said "that's her job". One bartender didn't even speak to us or anyone, the other one it took him 10-15 min to greet us and anyone who sat down. The bartenders have to go get the food so by the time we got our oysters and shrimp the majority of the ice was melted and the sea food was in a disgusting pool of water. After an hour wait to get a table, I had to personally go find a waiter to take our drink order after 20 minutes of waiting. 15 minutes after that our water showed up and they had completely forgotten every other drink we ordered. Our food took (not exaggerating here) 2.5 hours to come out and only because I had asked a manager what was going on. She told us some sob story about how they were so busy (not really) and then proceeded to say "truth is" we are down a fryer when nothing we ordered was fried. She informed us with an attitude that we hadn't been waiting that long because of the "ticket time" on the order. What a fantastic place! Our service from Millie was great. We went on a gorgeous Wed. afternoon for lunch(4 adults 3 young boys). They sat us in the middle and had crayons& coloring ready for us, slightly in the shade. We all got app's, drinks, main dish and desserts. I love hog fish whenever I visit the area, but I wasn't sure what sauce and Millie helped me right away pick the pineapple. If you ever want amazing key lime pie, get it here! Its very rich, but definitely different from other places. My husband cannot stand it and he stole mine after having a few bites. We stopped into Sundowners after taking a fishing charter out of the marina next door. Our boat captain recommended bringing our fresh catch into the restaurant and having them cook it up for us. We followed his advice and were amazed. Our fish was fried up two ways: blackened and panko. While both were cooked to perfection and served with made to order sauces (pineapple and caper sauces), the blackened style was the best fish I've ever had, hands-down. Service was very good, scenery and ocean view completed the experience. Highly recommend eating here, particularly if you plan to take one of the excellent fishing charters out of the marina next door. Loved it and will be back! read more

This used to be THE place. It must be going through a transition. The bar outside just got "revamped" and not for the better. They have a GEM here but something is missing. Doesn't feel like there's a "manager". Just good servers. Bartenders come and go quick. No one that makes you want to come back for them. It still has beautiful sunsets and the weekend (sometimes Thur) bands are great but often leave the stage early. Sushi is decent. Weekday bar scene (even in high season) at night is non-existent. You can take drinks outside from inside bar (not a festive bar). Food needs to get back to where it was in Dec 2020-Jan 2021. Outside terrace is a bit exposed to the elements, but that's what makes it a great locale. It's good, just not great and it could/should be. read more

Our rating is two stars , one star for the friendly staff & one star for the cocktail that tasted good. This is about where anything good stops Food was bland and boring , steak on kabobs were basically raw and some parts even cold , I couldn't eat my meal , only the Veges (these were also cold and hard) , my husband who basically Can way anything even refused half of his dish (this says a lot!) This place use to be a consistent visit every time i came Florida. Boat rental during the day and a night cap with this wonderful restaurant. Unfortunately this will be the last visit. New owners means new changes. Quality dishes are now bland and tasteless. Portion sizes are smaller and most items that use to be made in house are store bought. These owners seem to be focused on lowering quality and food cost but keeping prices at the same. Appetizers - Smoked Fish Dip : use to come with chunks of fish and was served with buttered crackers, not only is the portion size smaller but the they serve it with terrible tortilla chips now Calamari : use to be nice big pieces and unfortunately again, lower quality and taste Main Course : Key Lime Seafood : Use to be served with a wild rice and now they have changed it to a plain bland white rice. Dessert : Key Lime Pie : This pie was the best pie I've ever had. Now it has been reduced to a trash store bought dish. Great views. Amazing actually. The food is horrendous. I have been here over 30 times in my life and the food has seriously fallen way way off. The sunsets are amazing here but unfortunately I suggest you order drinks and not the food The food came out cold and the conch chowder was like Campbell's tomato soup. It's like the are too busy to handle what they are serving and thy are just throwing it together. 4 of us had dinner. 3 out of 4 we're dissatisfied. 1 was happy with his grouper so that's 25% grade. I had to send back my scallops. I leave 5 stars almost everywhere. I have loved this place in the past. Unfortunately the past 3 trips here have ended with poor dinners. Our service was great. Our waiter was really good. It's just the food. They did take care of the food charges which was nice because who wants to pay for food you can't eat. Was in the keys for a fishing trip last week and was staying at the Marriott down the road, so we came here twice throughout our trip. Went here for lunch the first time, where I got conch fritters to start and the blackened mahi sandwich for my main dish. Conch fritters were solid, and my sandwich was ok. It was a bit small and lacked in flavor. Service was a bit disorganized and laid back (who got what sides became chaotic and it became painful to order more drinks). The second time we came here, we brought fish we caught on our trip, porgy and yellow tail snapper, that they prepared grilled, fried, and blackened. All of the fish was fine. read more

Also the servers weren't all wearing masks all and the hostess seemed very confused and not accommodating, even though we had reservations with a request for outdoor seating and literally walked by and open table on our way to indoor seating. This restaurant easily became one of my favorite seafood spots in Key Largo. Since my 1st visit, I immediately fell in love with the food, friendly staff, and gorgeous water view. The main entrees are a little pricey from $18 to $39 but they also offer reasonably priced appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches from $12 to $16. I always get the Conch Fritters to start. I like the way they make the fritters here better than the typical deep fried round balls (see my pics). They are less breaded and I can actually taste chunks of conch. I've also had the Shrimp Kabang with Thai chili sauce and they're very tasty. They also use good quality big shrimps and are thinly battered. As far as entrées, if you want some sort of surf n turf, the best bang for your buck is the Steak and Seafood Kabobs for $26. You get 2 big kabobs stuffed with filet mignon tips, shrimp, and scallops drizzled with garlic butter over wild rice. I like my steaks medium but they tend to cook the steak longer here so the server advised us to opt for rare or medium rare and she was right! The steak came out perfectly juicy medium and the shrimp and scallops were not over grilled either. They were definitely flavorful and filling. Another entrée that's a must try is the fried Whole Yellowtail Snapper for $29. A little steep but it's nicely presented and I think it's enough for 2. Sundowners has one of the most gorgeous ocean views in Key Largo so that's probably enough reason to splurge a little :) The indoor dining offers panoramic views but highly recommend dining al fresco when the weather is bearable. Also, try to get there by 5 or 6pm to witness the beautiful sunset. read more
