It was one of my besties birthday and we decided to spend the day in the Keys. Our first spot was Sundowners a small restaurant located in Key Largo with inside and outside seating right by the water. Of course we decided to sit outside it was such a gorgeous day and vitamin D was much needed. We started off with some local beers from Islamorada Brewery and also Key West Ale. They both were very good, so we ordered a few more and our server brought us a bucket of ice to keep them chilled. We decided on two appetizers the sriracha shrimp platter and the fish dip. Both platters did not disappoint. We stayed a while longer and ordered there Key lime pie to wish my friend a happy birthday. It was really GOOD! A must if you are ordering dessert. The prices are reasonable and the service was great. You can also come by boat and dock. If not there is plenty of parking available in the front. I been going to this restaurant since I move to the keys in 2007 and lately has not been to a par ,prices are to high they are selling you the view but when is night time at least you should enjoy your food. Last night I went again to give them a chance and first thing I notice was the prices they are charging you even for the water you drink ,technically . We order appetizers was a no show portions not equal they miss half of the order of the entre , I been so disappointed from a restaurant ,use to be so good and now you pay sky high prices for bad service and the food. Lunch review: took a four top on the water's edge. Great view, lots of tables, and friendly waitresses (although not very knowledgable). Menu has a ton of great looking dishes, but the prices are not cheap. Highlights were cracked conch, broiled lobster tail, and shrimp and kale Caesar salad. Fish sandwich was "wet," literally kept dripping. Not sure why. My son only at half. My other son didn't touch his burger. Conch fritters were "meh" - skip 'em. Oysters tasty, but a bit warm for my taste. Most of the dishes were a bit too buttery and oily. Note that they have NO draft beer (only bottles), but the selection was decent. My husband was looking for a nice place to eat and watch the sunset for our anniversary and this place did not disappoint. The weather had been iffy all day and we were worried that the sunset would be ugly but despite the clouds, you can't deny that the Florida skies are always gorgeous at Sunset! See pics! The live music was great and not too loud and set the mood for a waterfront dining experience. Service was pretty decent considering that the place was packed. The food was decent, not the best I've ever had but certainly tasty and plentiful. We ordered three appetizers and it was more than enough for us to share. The conch fritters were tasty though very low on the conch. It was a fairly large basket served with a spicy curry mustard sauce and a cocktail sauce, both delicious. We also ordered the calamari, which was also a fairly large basket served with a nice marinara and a delicious lemon aioli. The third appetizer was genius, fried green olives stuffed with blue cheese, battered and fried and served with a fig jam. That was amazing! Sometimes you can even see dolphins and there are tarpons near the deck) - tourist trap: food is waaaay overpriced. Food - May have been good but I asked for butter (from person who brought the food and server) to dip my shrimp in twice took over 20minutes to bring after they brought my food; therefore, shrimp was tough and cold. If I was able to give a negative star rating I would when we arrived,The hostess said that we should go elsewhere because there wait time was to long. I never experienced a host sending you off to the competition. That should have been a sign to run but we didn't since it was near the water and they had live music. The drinks were ok but the attitude of the bartender less than desirable. The appetizer took forever and when they came out they were disgusting we had to send ours back not once but 3 times. They were not cook the batter was burned and still under cook and mushy inside. The staff needs retraining in customer service and the place needs a new cook. We love this place! It's in a beautiful location looking over the bay. They have outside tables that are pet friendly. If you are vegetarian or gluten intolerant they have a wonderful menu (ask for the vegetarian menu). Our first meal there we had the red snapper, grilled oysters with sweet potatoes & Kale! On other visits, we've tried a couple appetizers which were Fried Zoodles (fried zucchini noodles battered in rice flour and served with a wasabi aoli) and grilled avocados served with a siracha sauce (sorry no pics). Their Organic Mule is a delicious, refreshing mixed beverage! Also there is a parasailing booth which we also took advantage of on my husband's birthday! Stone crab claws and cocktails were fire.... Expect island time service. Took over an hour for our entree to come out. Isis recommended a pan sear for the hogfish.. apparently it's pan seared with out even a touch of salt and pepper... so bland! This place is ok. It was one I read about before our trip so I was excited to try it out but came away somewhat disappointed. The view was great, sunset beautiful, and food was pretty good. Service was super slow and the drinks were overpriced and small (see attached photo of a $13 key lime pie martini that barely fills half of a small, plastic cup). Good intentions for a great time... We arrived early and was seated promptly. The table we were seated it had a cat's feeding and water bowl, with the cat sprawled out underneath the table. It would have been nice if the hostess/waiter removed the feeding and water bowl, or shewed away the cat so that we could easily sit down. Alas, that didn't happen and it only went downhill from here. We ordered the Conch Fritters, they were burnt, and because of that it wasn't very appetizing, but my husband is from the waste not school... The service was mediocre and the food so far was meh, I deciding on a nice refreshing sangria with white wine. It took a while to actually receive the drink, not sure why, it wasn't crowded at the time. When it finally came it was red, sent it back for the white, and then that came in a nice shade of pink and tasted all types of bad. It was overly sweetened and looked unappetizing served in the same glass as my water. Presentation seems to be lost here. We ordered the Key Lime Seafood, Bayou Pasta, Fried Lobster Club and the kid's Chicken Tenders. The lack of seasoning on all of these dishes was a downfall and in my opinion ruined our meal. The Key Lime Seafood was cooked perfectly, however the wild rice was drowning in a soup of sauce that needed seasoning. The Bayou Pasta chicken and sauce was flavorless. The same goes for the Fried Lobster Club and the kid's Chicken Tenders. Everything was just so bland. I was looking forward to the food at this place, but it was so underwhelming. My husband still asked if I wanted dessert, I said, NO WAY! I've never been to a place where all of our meals where bad. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. But ironically right after we left our debit card had many random transactions resulting in over $1,000 in charges and having our bank cancel our card for fraud. It is 100% hard to say this establishment played a part in this but our bank seems to be confident as we haven't used our card until this restaurant. 1st you have to get for someone to take your order. 20+ mins at least. 2nd if you are going to order drinks and appetizers be ready to get only half of the drinks and half of the appetizers. 3rd appetizers will arrive (cold) at the same time as the entrees. If the entrees have a key complement that makes it a "signature" dish be prepared to be shorted and still pay full price example: mahi picatta with blue crab. Sorry no blue crab here's just the mahi. 4th if you don't like plates tossed at you or slid over the table to you, don't even come here. Apparently you are supposed to pretend you are a dog and that's why the feed you like one here. 5th signatures plates are no that signature, also expect to see the amount of dishes piling up in front of you as you eat. Plates are not cleared from the table as you finish. 6th beg for the bill too, after the ordeal is over, you need to also stand up and walk to the front door to get your check. This place is excellent. The conch fritters weren't over cooked as I feel most places do over cook these. They were perfect and went really nice with the spicy mustard dipping sauce and the cocktail sauce. I had the special which wAs a grilled grouper with a garlic butter sauce with huge pieces of crab meat. This meal tasted so fresh I couldn't believe. What ever flavor they put on this fish before they grilled it was awesome. The view...my favorite thing about this ace. Sitting there on the patio with a drink and the sunset was just breath taking. Sundowners was one of the highlights of our trip to Key Largo. After arriving and realizing quickly that the weather was going to be less than ideal, we decided to go have some drinks by the water. I had a piña colada that was an impressive size and came with a rum floater which was a nice little surprise. My fiancé got a mojito that was one of the best I've had. We weren't all that hungry so we just shared some apps and they were great! The crab dip had real crab in it and wasn't just a giant bowl of cheesy grease like they usually are. The cracked conch was SO good! It's soaked in coconut milk and then fried and served with a wasabi dipping sauce that cuts the fried food taste a bit and balances it well. Our waitress was so nice and extremely helpful when we told her we were looking for venues for our wedding. She took the time to write down all of the places that she knew of and Star some of her favorites as well as had another staff member come out to talk to us about some of his favorites. We had a beautiful view of the sunset from our table which we enjoyed with some delicious drinks. The drinks were delicious and a great size for the price. The appetizers, food and dessert were all fresh and delicious. We had the mojo chicken (100% recommend) and grouper with the pineapple rum glaze. For desert, we had the Oreo cheesecake and my only complaint was that I wish the slice was bigger! It was the perfect ending to our meal. The service was friendly but a little slow, we noticed there was only one waiter for our whole area so it was understandable. We had a very pleasant dining experience and next time will pass by for brunch on the boat! Amazing veiw right on the water if you sit on the patio or near it. My husband and I have eaten here plenty of times. We are vegan and I have a gluten allergy. They are very vegan friendly and have gluten free/vegan menus if you ask. My husband usually gets the veggie kebab with potatoes and I always get the raw zucchini pasta. Sometimes we will also order a salad and/or these really good marinated tomatoes they have as a side dish. This was our first time eating at Sundowners. We approached the hostess stand, requesting a table outside. We were told there was a 45 minute wait even though several tables we open an clean. I told the hostess that I noticed several open tables. She told me that she had to hold a table for a large party. I asked if there was a large party waiting to be seated, she stated "no". I then asked if there was a large party scheduled to come in. She again stated "no". I asked for a manager. I spoke to the manager about the situation. He walked over to the hostess, telling her to seat us. The hostess developed a bad attitude very quickly. She took us to our table, slapped the menus down on the table then walked off without saying a word. A 4 top became available just as we were sitting down at the larger table. I went to the manger telling him we would move to the smaller table so the larger table is available in case a party of 6 came in. He stated "Its only 7, stay at the table you are at." Within 15 minutes of sitting down two other tables were seated. In my mind I questioned the 45 minute wait time. it took over 10 minutes for us to be approached by a waitress even though she walked by our table several times. We didn't get a "I will be with you in a moment" greeting. When she finally came over to the table she leaned on it, telling us we could move to any other table we wanted to. When I told her we offered to move to a smaller table and the manger told us to stay at the larger table she became a bit defiant, stating with a poor attitude "I was just informing you." I reinterated my conversation with the manager. She walked off before finished my sentence. We sat at the table for a few minutes discussing about going to another restaurant. Just as we were getting up to leave a young man came over. We explained the situation. He stated he would take care of us. Well it took 20 minutes to get a glass of water, 40 minutes to get food and 45 minutes for my wife to get her ice tea. The only good thing about this dining experience was the food. The pasta dish as well as the shrimp appetizer were very good. It took 20 minutes to get dessert and the check. During the entire ordeal I was calm, non confrontational, and had a pleasant tone. I did display of firm tone when confronted about the table situation from the waitress. Based on the experience starting with the hostess I am lead to beleive that the hostess spoke to the waitresses and this was all choreographed based on the initial interaction. I will always love this place for the view, the ambiance, the tropical feel and certain food items found on their menu. Their waiters are also super lovely ! In my past reviews I've mentioned I've been a customer since 2006. A lot has changed since then. I ate their original key lime seafood many times in all those years. Somewhere around 2014 or 2015 they changed it completely. This has upset me the most. I drove from cutler bay to key largo frequently to eat here. One of a kind dish! I have never had it anywhere else. They changed the rice twice and now it is a completely dry dish. Nothing like the original. We came out on July 18 and I spoke to the waiter about this. He was such an amazing person. He tried to to make it better by bringing me extra hot sauce and limes and told me he's tried explaining it to the chef that the dish needs more sauce. I'm hoping management will see this comment and take it into consideration to PLEASE bring back the original key lime seafood. This is the best dish hands down. Please !! The view is definitely the reason to come to this place. Unfortunately the service and food didn't match the view. We waited 2 hours after we ordered for our food and when it finally arrived, it was "okay" at best. After we ate our entrees, one of the reasons we returned to this place is for the great Key Lime Pie. After we ordered and it arrived to the table, we were surprised to see that it was more of a store bought cheaper pie. We were told that after new owners purchased the restaurant, the Key Lime Pie changed. Lastly, it wouldn't hurt to train the waiting staff in how to respond to customers correctly. In conclusion, we paid way too much for what we received and waited way too long for what we ordered. The main attraction here is the view. The calm ocean is visible from every table, the seagulls and pelicans fly through and the anchored boats make for a unparalleled scene. I understand the island vibe, but from the moment we sat and the time arrived to the table is was just under 70 minutes. That's a pretty lengthy time. Noah, our server, was pleasant and very nice. There was really nothing "wrong" with this place. The food............ is ok; and frankly, a little pricey for what you get. I asked for the fish and shrimp "platter". As you can see from the picture, it's basically fish sticks and fries you would usually find in a kid's menu anywhere else. And at $27, well, again... at least the view is priceless. read more
