Some downsides: 1) service was very very slow, we maybe saw our waiter twice it took 20 minutes for our drinks and another 35 minutes for food 2) i was very unimpressed with our appetizer the smoked tuna dip. I was not expecting smoked canned tuna in a place like that 3) my cocktail was a glorified slushy i expected my mojito cocktail to have real ice cubes not crushed ice that filled the entire glass 4) i got the tuna pizza the tuna cuts were a little on the chewy side and the pizza crust was like a fried tortilla it was super thin and crunchy not pizza like at all. If I was on death row and sundowners was the only option, I would die hungry and even if I did eat it I would die hungry. Ordered the Hogfish and it was so bland that it virtually had no taste. Reminded me of tilapia. Portions so small, I decided to order the American burger with hopes of not leaving hungry. I asked for the burger to be cooked medium and it came out charred to a crisp. This place is a total rip-off. The food was cold, greasy and tasteless. This was after almost a 40 min wait. The dishes were extremely overpriced for the quality of food. And to top it all, they charge you a mandatory 18% gratuity!! Definitely would not recommend. My husband and I made reservations to eat here on July 4th. Everything was incredible! We arrived in time to enjoy our light dinner and have dessert when the fireworks started. I highly recommend eating here to watch the show if you are in town for the Fourth. I ordered a frozen drink, The Volcano, and my husband had a Moscow Mule. We shared the Shrimp Ka'Bang appetizer, a side of Mac & Cheese and a Molten Chocolate Cake. The drinks were strong but flavorful. The shrimp were fresh and delicious. The mac was creamy and had a tasty bacon breadcrumb topping on it. Finally, the cake was warm and fudgy and came with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a couple strawberries. This place has amazing food and Fast and friendly staff. We were staying at Playa Largo and drove the 6 miles down and it was so worth it. Plus, we got to see the sunset. The view is wonderful, one of the best sunset views you can get on Key Largo. We came 3 weeks ago. We waited at least a half an hour for our food, which was fine, but when my churrasco came it was medium well instead of medium rare so I had to send it back. When the new one came out, my whole party had already finished eating. Today we tried it again, and it was a holiday weekend so we expected a bit of a wait but we didn't expect to wait for an hour and 40 minutes for our food. Even an hour and 20 minutes for the appetizer to come out. When my ribs came, they were not hot. I ate the sides and took the ribs home. This place is pricey - $120 for two of us for 2 entrees, an appetizer and 3 drinks. Way too expensive for that long of a wait for cold food. We won't be back. read more

What a horrible experience. After 1 hour, we finally received our drinks and starters. Then we waited another 1 1/2 and finally cancelled some of our food orders. Not only did the food finally arrive after 2 hours of waiting but it was cold. My husband cancelled his food order but we had to pay for it or continue to wait for the bill to be fixed. As if that wasn't enough, we had a a large table, which they assured us wouldn't be a problem. We were charged for an $18 entree that never arrived and a 20% gratuity which ended up being $25+ dollars. This was by far the worst restaurant I've ever experienced. Don't bother. The food is not worth it and after two + hours, I no longer was hungry. We arrived at 7 PM and finally left at 10 PM. Horrible experience!!!! read more

I loved Sundowners when the outside restaurant was all sand and wicker! It was so " Keys like" but it's completely upgraded now and really beautifully and tastefully done. (Sadly we have to accept growth and change I guess.) The servers were all courteous and attentive, we had three! Apparently because of an emergency for the first one. The second one ( I assume) wasn't familiar with the specials, which is what I ordered. Hog Fish! She brought the wrong dish. The third waitress made the correction for us, so my husband was half way through his dinner before I got mine. BUT the management was extremely on point, surprisingly he went into action immediately, and we left as super happy customers!! We will definitely be back!! I have been going to Sundowners for at least 13 years. Yesterday, my girlfriend and I decided to spend our Valentine's lunch at Sundowners. We quickly learned the business was recently sold. No more amazing bread, prices went up drastically, we waited 10 minutes for a waiter, customer service not the same. After ordering a ceviche we were told they ran out. Then we ordered a soup and it was full of grease smh. And to top it of, a Valentine's Day special menu was handed to us after we ordered lol. I have never posted a negative review anywhere, but I guess good things don't last forever. I will never visit this place ever again. What a shame the view is amazing, but a restaurant is not all about a view. read more

Beautiful views!! Elegant setup and friendly staff. Had the Tuscan chicken pasta, chicken was a little on the rubber side.

Inside and outside dining. Food and service is great. Parking is abysmal especially at sunset. Come early. We watched people buy fish food but there were no fish to feed, seagulls took it all - not a good idea with people eating nearby. The ribeye was very good. It had been better on other nights, not sure why. The food here can be hit or miss so if you have a fantastic experience or a bad experience will depend on the night you go. One star is a gift. After waiting 45 minutes. We were seated at a table that was not set with utensils or plates and had rice on it from the previous diners. Our waiter, friendly enough, took about 10 minutes to approach us and say hello. We placed our order immediately as we had two kids that were hungry after the initial wait. We ordered nachos to hold us over until the meal came. When the nachos came they were quickly dropped off and we had to ask for silverware, napkins and plates. The nachos were topped with a black bean onion mix. Cheese was minimal at best. And only the top 6-7 chips were covered. The rest of the basket was just that, a basket of chips. An hour later, our food arrived. A full hour. The steak and shrimp kabobs were sparse and served on plain white rice. No sauce or seasoning. Disappointing for $28 dollars. The onion rings were over fried, cold and hard as rocks. Not at all edible. The conch fritters were unique. Seasoned differently than any other fritter I've had. Different peppers In the dough. It would have been good to know before ordering, since I'm not a huge fan of peppers. The mahi mahi was tiny and thin. About the size of a personal check. The French fries were cold. No ketchup to be found anywhere. The waiter had specifically suggested fried mahi mahi, a keys version of fish and chips, so my son had ordered it. When it came, it wasn't fried???? And it was raw in the middle. At this point, we were done. On a positive note, the manager Leon did speak with us and was very kind and apologetic. Great views from their large outdoor patio but the service and food is lacking. We started with the grilled avocados and we received a plate with an avocado that had been halved with slight grill marks, nothing else on the plate. This place has a great selection of seafood, including many species of fish, stone crab and more. We ordered grilled Mahi Mahi to share with two sides, grilled asparagus and coleslaw. The fish was exceptionally fresh and delicious. The service was very friendly, albeit somewhat laid back. We were seated right on the water, close enough to watch huge tarpon and rays swim by. This place has the best ocean view. You're surrounded by water. Our table was right off the water and we could see tarpon swimming around near the dock. The service was friendly. This was our first stop after arriving for vacation... beautiful location right on the water. This review is specifically for AJ, who was amazing from start to finish. He was clearly short staffed, checking us in, bussing our table so we could sit down, and managing everything going on. There was a mix up with our order getting into the system, so after a long wait, he made it right by offering to set us up for sunset cocktails any other evening, buying us a round of drinks and dessert, and giving each of us their souvenir scrubs as a gift. He was lovely from beginning to end and handled the issue well. We know it's a crazy time for businesses and many are short staffed, and we appreciated his hospitality and efforts very much. I was skeptic coming here after reading some of the reviews, but im glad i followed my gut feeling, this place satisfied our every need, we sat in the back(outdoor with fans) in a round table and it was perfect because we were away from everybody, we ordered the coconut shrimp, fish and chips, crab cakes, the ashley fish sand, cheeseburger, and the kabob plate with steak and shrimp, everything was delicious, i was surprised how good everything was, the fish was super fresh. This place is absolutely beautiful. I got the table right by the water that I could jump in. The food was great and sitting there under the sun watching the boats come in was a lot of fun. We ordered the conch, fried olive and the fish that came with crab on top. The meal sizes were great and it fed both of us. The only reason I put four stars is because the waitress we had was slightly uninterested in anything. She started warming up after a while but it was a little annoying but everyone has their bad days. I'd still go back to get the amazing food and the beautiful view. read more

Came down with my wife to celebrate Valentines Day with a sunset view and a good dinner - unfortunately, we got the view while waiting one and a half hours for a table...wanted the peel and eat shrimp, only to be told that they were out. For a seafood-oriented place, that's inexcusable...ordered appetizers which took about 30 minutes to arrive - clam chowder was good, but bacon wrapped scallops didn't seem to be cooked well - finally brought entrees, and they were less than lukewarm, almost cool - finally lost patience told them to take it back, and asked for the check...apparently management didn't charge us for appetizers, so we left - compared to past visits, this was a major disappointment. Terrible service and food. We went tonight fir the fresh seafood. The fish was inedible and we sent them both back. They recooked they fish and it was still mushy and smelt off. We were then told that it was frozen and not fresh. The side plates on the table were dirty and there was old food stuck to the salt shaker. I've tried eating here 3 times in the last month. All 3 times have been extremely long waits outside for no reason. Half the tables are open and most of the waiters are sitting around talking. The hostess has a horrible face when you walk in, as if she hates her life and job. While waiting for a table of 3 I went to the bar to buy a drink since it's very hot. Waited about 10 minutes standing while the bartenders just walked around mingled with clients smiled for people but never even looked our way. We just wanted a water and a drink since it's a little 95 degrees outside. Decided to not spend my money there. Even after I left I never received a call from them to tell me there's a table available. I say replace the staff, I'm sure there are plenty people who would love a job. Idk what happened to this place? We stop by about every 3 months or so but tonight was confusing. We go to sundowners to have an excellent meal and watch the sunset. Tonight it was like being in the twilight zone. Music was so loud we could not even talk. The lobster bisque was no longer in the amazing bread bowl, had no cream sherry, and no lobster chunks. Dinner was average at best. Service was very lacking and I was never able to order a drink. What happened to this place? I feel like they have switched hands and they are trying to compete with jimmy johnsons place. Unfortunately, they are losing the sophistication and the nice dinner crowd. We won't be back. So sad. I recommend you go to jimmy Johnson's (the big chill) next door, the food and atmosphere are better and they don't automatically add 18% tip to your bill. read more
