Very disappointed, came here and John told me that I had to do three crowns as my tooth are starting to decay. I thought they were not because previously before I went to another dentist and they told me they can do a refill since the tooth wasn't bad ....but since I trusted them, I decided to do two of the crowns for replacement. They did not numb me well and oh did that drill hit my nerves and I jumped....came home with a temporary crown pending the permanent crown ...but now that I think about it...I should have not replaced them ...the price was insane...the receipt shows previous balance, which was my first time there, I asked for explanation and did not get a word ...cleaning should be covered under insurance but they charged me for that....I am moving on to a different dentist...I regret coming here especially with charges that don't make sense. I am a patient of Dr Villaquette. I found smile center during Covid for my Son who is autistic. His regular dentist had not figured out protocols and we needed emergency help. About 10 years ago I underwent a root canal procedure on tooth #31. Little did I know how detrimental leaving what should be dead tooth in my body. I have been in increasing pain for 4 years w/ chronic infection. I have recently seen a biological dentist to look at the old root canal, performed by Dr. Vellequette. Upon looking at a cone beam Xray, this biological dentist saw and I saw many tiny fragments of foreign material. The pieces are under the root area of the tooth and have caused my jaw bone to be eaten away, and the pieces have penetrated the jaw bone and forced the bone to try to regenerate and grow around, while also desperate trying to get these foreign pieces OUT. I have bone loss in my jaw, swollen lymph nodes constantly from the chronic infection, and my dentist may have to further remove MORE of my jaw bone to get all of these foreign pieces out. We don?t know if it is something left in the socket during original procedure or degrading of the root canal. STAY. AWAY!!!!! And seriously, truly look into the risks and major health implications that go along with a root canal. Aka keeping a dead tooth in your head, next to your brain. I cannot emphasize this enough. And, along with some fillings (which I now wholeheartedly question the necessity of!), a cleaning and being under anesthesia - the total for all of it was over $8k. They banked (literally) on my anxiety and fear and knew I would be under anesthesia. read more

I am 38 years old and I am embarrassed to admit this, but I am terrified of going to the dentist. I have very rarely had a good experience when I have gone (which I get is a vicious cycle) but this last visit at Smile Center was such a horrible experience that I feel like I have to post what happened. I had been going Dr. John for about 10 years, not as regularly as recommended but we had a long history. I recently noticed that I had lost a couple fillings at some point and scheduled an appointment to have them fixed along with my regular cleaning and xrays. The scheduling went smoothly and so did the xrays and cleaning, for the most part. The xrays were numerous and painful but have always been so in the past as well so no surprise there. The whole time during the cleaning I was being talked at and lectured about flossing and buying a waterpik. Again, par for the course. Afterward I was sent to "the other side" of the office to see the dentist. He looked at my xrays and looked quickly in my mouth and told the hygienist what he noticed, in medical speak using numbers and terms that I was not familiar with, and then said we can take care of it today. At first I was really happy that they would be able to get everything done in one day because it is very difficult for me to get childcare. Then I realized as they were preparing to numb me, that they never told me what needed to be done or how much it would cost! I immediately asked for an estimate. When they came back with it I was quoted for 7 teeth and $398 out of pocket! I have dental insurance and was told that they accepted my insurance over the years. I questioned the amount and they just explained that insurance would only cover that much. After calling my husband we agreed to get a second opinion and I ended up leaving without having my fillings fixed. I called my insurance and found that even though my regular dentist did indeed accept my insurance they were no longer in my network so the percentage of coverage was minimal. I was very discouraged to hear that and that they had not said anything when I asked about the cost. After discovering all of this I found a new dentist on my insurance carrier's website. Then I emailed them to ask that they email my xrays to the new dentist and the reason for my leaving their practice. They replied by having their "insurance specialist" email me and tell me they do accept my insurance, which is not even what I had said was the reason for the switch. Then finally they emailed my xrays but to me instead of the new practice. I can't believe that treatment after years of going to them! I'm very disappointed. I have recently relocated here from Chicago and was looking for a dentist. Some background: I typically go every six months for a teeth cleaning, because of my move my last cleaning was in December. I have one cavity from when I was 12, other than that I always have an excellent report. Flash forward to today when I was expecting a routine visit. My experience is very similar to other negative reviews on here. They took many x rays and pictures, it was very uncomfortable and painful. The staff kept changing and they were very cold. The cleaning was also painful, I told the staff I've never had pain at the dentist before and the response was that my teeth are sensitive because I haven't taken care of them. When the dentist did come in, he showed me my pictures and misidentified where my filing is. He then said my teeth were very stained because "you aren't a spring chicken anymore". I was completely floored by the unprofessional attitude and poor service. I left with an estimate of almost 800 dollars for the seven cavities they diagnosed me with. Needless to say, I'm going elsewhere for a second opinion. read more

This has been my dentist since I moved to the Bay Area. I highly recommend to people looking for a new dental office. The staff is warm, efficient and professional. They are very good at reminding you of cleanings and such (by email and phone calls). Also they will lay out the bill to you with no hidden fees before any procedure so you know how much you have to pay out of pocket. Update: it's been a few years - how are things holding up? Well, after my previous review I "had to" get another crown and thought to myself "okay, obviously they're going to be really careful with this one". Well, that tooth ended up needing a root canal. Then the tooth (along with the crown) broke off. So I had to get it extracted. An implant requires a bone graft and it's very expensive so it needs to be done over two insurance cycles (years). ... now the same thing just happened with one of the original two crowns. New dentist cemented it back on but said it's going to break soon and I'll need an extraction... at which point my bills will be too high to fix everything so I'll have to continue pushing things back until the next year. Somewhat taken aback at the negative reviews. Staff very professional and on top of everything. Had to have a root canal and crown and frankly the best experience I have had at a dentist. I partially ignore advise and after the root canal and temp crown just let it be, was back to normal in 72 hrs with no meds. Crown experience was great. Walked in with an inflamed achilles injury and they were kind enough to give me an ice pack as in agony and barely walk. Divinity intervened to save me from having my teeth worked on by Dr. Vellequette, the kind of dentist who makes you floss assiduously out of sheer fear - not of losing your teeth, but your peace of mind if ever subject to similar appointments again. Fung and Vellequette advertise themselves as endodontists. That is the only reason I came here, since my regular dentist advised me to consult an endodontist. Then when I arrived and spoke to the hygienist I was told that they are not endodontists. I had the appointment scheduled with Dr. Fung but was told Dr. Vellequette would see me instead. The hygienist proceeded to photograph all of my teeth besides taking X-rays. Which is fine, except that at the end she took a pic of my entire face while I was in the chair. My Saturday-morning makeup free visage is enough to raise concerns on homelessness and potential crystal meth addiction, so why this full-face shot was necessary is beyond me. The pic was basically taken without my consent in a split second, and I had to see it displayed on the side for the entirety of my visit and feel embarrassed. Dr. Vellequette is annoying. There is no better adjective to describe this gentleman. My experience was similar to other patients' here, he immediately started talking about how my two existing root canals needed more work. For one of them, that made sense since there was a gap, for the other, what he said was just shady. I have no issues with this root canal + crown and he kept using the word 'exploratory'. It was clear that the only thing he was interested in exploring was the possibility of making more money off of me and my insurance provider. Also, I did not appreciate all the over-familiarity during the consultation. It is reasonable to expect your dentist to not poke and prod your arm every 2 seconds. At one point when he poked my arm for the 7th time I had to exercise every bit of self-control to not get up and walk out that very second. I fled back to my regular dentist. The one star here is for the Netflix/TV they have above the dental chair. read more

I went back to Dr. Vellequette for a root canal and now I have to re-do the root canal because I'm still having problems with a nerve and not to mention the crown is too big. i've never had a bad experience with a dentist until this guy who seemed so nice and knowledgeable (which he probably is, but lack of honesty makes this irrelevant in his case). Anyway, he said that I had cavities, cracks, and needed crowns when 3 other dentists whom I paid to get a 2nd opinion from couldn't find anything. It also makes me wonder the 2 cavities that I did have filled if they were necessary. Maybe those were...I'll never know. Also, he recommends to take way more pain killers than necessary. My opinion if you really want him as a dentist is get a 2nd opinion. Hopefully, after reading this review he, himself will be more honest with his evaluation. Also, I had his sister the hygienist clean my teeth and she exaggerated how bad my teeth are, and that too was proved to be incorrect by the other 3 dentists. Also, anyone else think it's weird that he has a larger than life size pic of his wife and a photo of his 3 children wearing Stanford shirts. Stanford is of course an excellent university but it's just a bit annoying and odd that he isn't an alumni. read more

I went for a routine cleaning and they took some pictures of my mouth. Then when the doctor came in he didn't look inside my mouth and went straight to the pictures saying that I have a lot of cavities and that there is a filling that need to be redone. I told the doctor that I have never got any filling done before. So he showed me the picture which was actually some saliva. I told him again but he won't listen.. I began doubting myself. I told him That I will come back later for the fillings and ran out. Then when I visited a dentist in India he said that I don't have any cavity at and that they are just stains. Bottom Line: if the doctor can't make out saliva vs stain vs cavity then I don't know what to say. But its very sad that he would just rip people off like that. read more

I don't recommend Dr.Vellequette. His modus operandi is to take close up pictures of perfectly healthy teeth, scare the patient that they might get cavities in the future, and recommend preventive drilling of perfectly healthy teeth to fill them up. Unfortunately, I was too naive to fall into his trap. After almost 30 years of perfectly healthy teeth, I unfortunately fell into the trap of Dr. Velquette, and got 10 teeth of mine drilled and filled though X-rays showed zero cavities. Please note that it is perfectly healthy to have deep grooves in molars. It is natural, and nothing to be worried about inspite of what Dr.Velquette will preach you. It is unethical and plain wrong to play with patients lives. If there are zero cavities, there is absolutely no need to drill and fill them up. Because of his greed, I am now subjected to refillings every few years for the rest of my life. Every time a tooth gets drilled to replace an old filling, more of the original tooth structure is lost and there is a bigger hole to fill. There is nothing more stronger and durable than the original tooth you have. Anyone, who gets recommended by Dr.Velquette for new fillings should outright get a second opinion instead of trusting him blindly. The only saving grace of his practice are his hygienists. They are awesome! They do a thorough job of cleaning your teeth. I waited too long to post this review, thinking it would not make a difference. There is a good chance that this review might get hidden by Yelp. Please note that there is one more reviewer who had a similar treatment meted out to him by Dr. Velquette due to greed (11 tooth-fillings for no good reason). read more

In a sentence: DON'T GO HERE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN CLEANINGS. I have to give a very negative update. Just to clarify, Dr. Fung is great and I would still go to her for cleanings if I wasn't so disgusted with Dr. Vellaquette. After my last cleaning I was told my mouth was full of cavities, like 20-30. I'd had a few very small fillings before, so I was surprised, but he's the dentist with a lot of 5 star yelp reviews, right? My whole interaction with Dr. Vellequette was negative, the guy is pompous and an ass. He pressured me into getting 8 fillings just after my cleaning, all of my right side; he wanted to do both the right and left side but I insisted on waiting on the left side. It felt rushed, and in retrospect it definitely was. What's worst is he did a crappy job - less than a year later I had to get one redone since a cavity formed under the filling, and the other fillings are chipping away just from flossing. My experience when having it redone was completely different in a good way at Dr. David Li's practice in Sunnyvale (***go to his practice instead!***) Unfortunately, my teeth will never be the same after Dr. Vellequette drilled away most of 8 of them. read more

I went to Dr. Vellequette & Associates last year when I just moved to California. Because of its good reviews on Yelp, I decided to try Dr. Vellequette & Associates. The DDS was nice and always got lots of stories to tell me during the services, so I trusted him and what he recommended. After the first visit, he told me my teeth had many cavities and recommended me to fill 12+ teeth. Although I was a little bit shocked about what he said since none of my previous dentists had ever told me I have as many as 12+teeth need to be filled, I still accepted him suggestions. Then I paid two more visits to get these teeth filled, 6 teeth per time. The whole process was pretty painful, and what was worse, after the service, some of the filled teeth which had functioned well before hurt a lot whenever I ate. I called the DDS, he said it was normal and said the pain will go away after some time. However, I waited for four months, and those teeth still hurt a lot! I told my colleagues about my experience, and most of them were surprised about the large number of teeth I was asked to fill. I showed them the pictures of the teeth before and after the filling which the DDS provided. Most of my colleagues and friends said the majority of the teeth were not necessarily to be fill at all. Anyway, bad experience, and I won't go back there any more. read more

They have some cool gear that will magnify your teeth on the monitor so you can see what they are seeing. I got a good cleaning but experienced some pain the following few days (hygienist was a little heavy handed). Dr. John Vallequette and his staff are simply amazing. As a new patient, I came into their office with severe anxiety issues and tooth pain. I literally feel physically ill just getting a checkup in general. Dr. Vallequette and his staff were so kind and gentle and after examining me explained in detail his course of treatment in regards to implants which I knew from a previous dentist that I needed and prescribed antibiotics to help with the infection as well. The doctor prescribed calming medication for me for the night before the lengthy procedure so I would get a good nights rest and a pill for the morning of the dental procedure. The hygienist was so caring towards me. She covered me with a blanket, found me something to watch on Netflix, placed the headphones on my ears and began the nitrous. Dr. John took extremely good care of me, made sure I was in no discomfort during the procedure and was extremely kind and professional. I truly couldn't have asked for a better dentist or better staff at his office. I felt no anxiety getting this procedure done and had the greatest confidence that I would be treated with respect. My husband and I own a business as well and I know the value of not only a great product but what outstanding customer service is as well. Hip hip hooray! My dentist search is finally over! I was recommended to Dr. Vellequette through a friend and boy am I glad. He is extremely nice and knowledgeable, being that he's been in his field for about 30 years now. If a dentist has been in his industry for longer than I've been born, then I think I can trust that he knows his stuff. He makes the teeth cleaning process as pleasant as possible, without the overly roughness that other dentists usually are on my teeth. The staff here is top notch, as well. When you enter, you know they're there to help you and make your visit as simple as possible. They make coming to the dentist as convenient as possible, even with scheudling appointments. I can simply shoot them a FB message or email to get squeezed in. Now to get to the good stuff..they have freebies here. Per usual, they offer magazines for your reading pleasure but my favorite things are the snacks and hand sanitizers. Instead of trying to scare me to get more services done, Dentist John gave me easy to understand layman examples of my teeth conditions: what is the condition, what caused it, how everyday chewing puts stresss on it and what treatment plan needs to be implemented to fix my problematic teeth aches. Then Urly enters with the cost breakdown with the Membership discounted to my lowest possible price all without having to deal with enrollment into a long wait period dental insurance! Angel scheduled my return appt and I immediately prepaid another Membership for my 6.5 year old daughter and set up her cleaning, X-ray and exam next Wednesday. Once my parents visit me from Boston and my in-laws visit me from Philly, I am making sure they see Dentist John and his amazing team... a second opinion from the 'most expert' dental team confirming all our Oral Health is a must for my family now (after 3 years of no dental anything). P.s... did I mentioned that my extreme cross bite 5 years ago is now still a perfect smile all because I was under the caring hands of Dentist John and his extraordinary team throughout my Invisilign experience! I was very impressed with Dr. Vellequette and he's knowledge on current technology and with he's ability to explain what was good for me todo for my teeth since, I hadn't been to a dentist in a long time. He is smart and articulate and I recommend him...He seems to get both the scientific and personal side of the business and everyone in the office is amazing and also he ref, me to a great dr. to take out my wisdom teeth. I went here a few years ago to get my teeth whitened and what can I say, my teeth are radiant! Don't believe me? Check out my photos for evidence... ;) I recently went back to have another whitening done and their office is still as inviting and comfortable as I remember...TONS of magazines while you wait (if you even need to wait)...and some goodies at the snack bar (SCORE!) The exam rooms are so comfortable, I just sat back with a blanket and watched my favorite shows on the TV monitor...To be quite honest, I wasn't ready to leave when the whitening was done... Most dental experiences can be torturous but visiting Dr. Vellequtte's office is therapeutic :) I definitely recommend! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Vellequette and Dr. Fung for about a year and a half now. Both of these dentists are very personable, knowledgeable and give a thorough preface on work to be done. All my cleanings have left me with a spring in my step and the feeling of new money! The filling process is a piece of cake with their efficiency and diligence. They have Netflix streaming which is a nice diversion to the fun of getting dental work done in your mouth. The dentist memorabilia is a nice touch- chapstick for my bedside and breath freshener for my purse! They run a tight ship here. I usually communicate through email, and they get back to me in a timely fashion. I had a lapse in insurance, decided to pay cash, and they gave me a little break for that. I like this dentist so much, I come all the way from San Francisco! read more

I've been to a few different dentists recently that have told me that everything looks great and to keep doing what I'm doing. I went to Dr. Vellequette for the first time, and he is the first to tell me that things weren't perfect. He took photos and xrays and reviewed them with me, showing me how over time my molars were degrading in the seams and would need to be filled. He didn't push to do any work now but simply "put them on the shopping list" for a later date when it was more necessary. Dr. Fung did my cleaning (yes, my cleaning was done by a dentist), and she did the best job of anyone getting rid of every little piece of junk that had accumulated. The only negative was the office. It was fine, but not all that nice. Almost everywhere else I've been has been nicer, more updated, with TVs in the exam rooms, etc. But, the level of care is so great that the state of the office cannot lower this review from 5 stars. Go see Dr. Vellequette, if for nothing else than a second opinion. read more

I went to get my tooth repaired. During the visit when he was cementing the crown from the bridge got wet. The assistant asked the dr vellequette about re cementing. He said no that it should be fine. It wasn't With in 2 months it was completely unglued. Called and set up in appt and it took me awhile. When i went in to get it fixed i was told no charge by the assistant and dr vellequette said the same. Also told them i wouldn't be coming back because they don't take me new insurance. The office then sent me a bill for 358. I've called with no response. This is fraud. You can't say no charge and then charge. read more
