When I'm in the thick of the Tenderloin, I'm usually trying to find the best way to get out. However, I had been curious about this spot and found an excuse to come here when I was serving on a jury at the Superior Court nearby. Since it was still light out, I figured I'd walk over after the day's deliberations and arrive at 5PM when they opened. Good idea except I was too early and ended up sprinting around the block three times to avoid being conspicuous. When I finally was able to enter, I secured a seat at the counter despite not having a reservation. The menu was sparse - just nine items - and each was described in savory detail (Photo 6). Based on the reviews I read and my own dietetic predilections, I went for their signature dish, the $26 Pork Bone Soup. It came with a hearty bowl of hot white rice (Photo 7) and a bit of banchan, including kimchi, pickled daikon, marinated onion and sliced jalapeños (Photo 8). The soup came in a traditional earthenware pot to retain the heat of the milky broth, which had been simmering in pork bones for at least 24 hours. The tender pork itself was sliced razor-thin and mixed with spices and chopped green onion (Photo 10). A side of fresh chile paste was presented on the side and deepened the flavor of the rich broth. The net result was Korean comfort food done with culinary flair but staying true to its homestyle roots. Sungho is SO good. Fully exceeded expectations. We got a few things and every single one hit. The kimchi pancake with pork was crispy, savory, and actually had real kimchi flavor instead of just being oily. The bossam was insane. The pork belly was sooo tender, clean, and just really well done. Every meat we had was ridiculously tender. The beef short rib soup was also so good. Super comforting, rich but still clean. Apparently they do these long-simmered broths and you can really taste it. This is the kind of bowl that makes you pause for a second. The spicy jokbal fried rice was the standout for me. It actually has real heat, so just know that going in. But the flavor is ridiculous. Now I'm already planning to come back and try the jokbal itself. The menu is pretty focused and everything feels really intentional. Space is simple and cozy, nothing fancy which fits the food. Portions are solid and great for sharing. Such a satisfying meal. Def coming back.

The pork bone soup was delicious. I love soup with rice! It was a really warm day in SF, not exactly a good day for hot soup, but I still really enjoyed it! The kimchi pancake was on the thin side, crispy and pretty spicy! It wasn't the best jeon I've ever had but I liked the texture. The bossam was good too! Pork belly was tender. It was a great dinner - satisfying but not too heavy. The wait staff was friendly and kept my water cup filled. The restaurant, although not in the best neighborhood, is quite nice inside! The tables are spaced out so that you don't feel too crowded. I'd love to come back again!

Don't judge a book by it's cover! Been meaning to come visit this restaurant for quite some time. I have to be honest, it's not in the best of neighborhoods, the Tenderloin! No parking. Lots of people hanging around outside that may deter you from coming. But, if you are brave enough, you will be rewarded to a very chic, modern Korean restaurant that makes some of the best Korean soups in SF! Perfect for the cold SF nights but also warm soup for the soul. Spicy bone soup-a little too spicy for myself and friends. They need to lower the spice and heat just a notch or two. Regular bone soup- It made me feel like I was having it made by some grandma in the back boiling it with love. Bossam- juicy pork slices that you mix with some gojujang sauce, garlic in lettuce. Tasty! I told the owner about how I've been wanting to come and my hesitations. I say catch a uber or lyft ride there, step in the door, and you will be rewarded and glad that you came!

The pork bone soup was flavorful and the meat was tender, but the bossam tasted tough and chewy. Kind of disappointing because this seems to be their most popular dish. I would only get the soup again and skip the bossam.

I was blown away by this hole-in-the-wall Tenderloin restaurant that transports you into a Korean grandmother's kitchen. This isn't the Korean food you're used to - lots of meats, barbecue, etc.). This is home cooking at it's comfort-for-the-soul finest, with one clear standout on the menu - a divine bone broth simmered for 24 hours and paired with tender pork. Also impressive was the bosam, pork belly with a delicious home made sauce that you'd wrap in accompanying lettuce. The house-made kimchi was also impressive. And the price is pretty fair. Two of us ate for about $100, which is a great and hearty meal in the city, especially at this quality.

Discovered this place after craving spicy marinated crabs. Made a reservation and left happy. I keep coming back mostly for the bossam and their beef short rib soup. It's always comforting and light and after eating I don't feel like I overate. Their service is amazing and they always check up on you to ask about the food and come around for water refills. There is also of course banchan which goes well with the bossam, however I will say their kimchi is a bit overfermented but if you like that more acidic taste then you will enjoy it all the more. I find that this is a nice spot to come with others or a friend their lights during the evening are lowered and it creates a very nice atmosphere. I will continue to come back here and glad I discovered this spot and definitely recommend.

    Beef Bone Soup

Sungho is a Korean comfort food restaurant located in the Tenderloin neighborhood so a little difficult to find parking. Suggest taking public transportation or uber if you want to come here. This is not your traditional Korean BBQ restaurant. It focuses on Bone Soup, Jokbal, marinated crab, and bossam. Jokbal is a korean soy braised pork trotter and Bossam is slow boiled pork belly. These dishes are often accompanied with lettuce wraps and some soybean paste where you can make your lettuce wrap with your favorite protein. While we didn't try the Jokbal today, I've had these in Korea and they are quite tasty and has a gelatinous texture. Today, we shared the Beef Bone Soup and Bossam. The Beef Bone Soup came out piping hot with two big short ribs. The soup was flavorful and I didn't need to add any salt. Some of the other Beef Bone Soup I've tried recommended you add salt to your liking. The short rib was very tender but still retained a bite to it. The Bossam was equally tender and was not heavily seasoned by itself but when wrapped with the lettuce, soybean paste, and other accompaniments tasted great. The portion size was very good, enough for two people to share. The menu is somewhat limited though in my opinion. Wish there were more options to choose from. The other popular dish here is the korean pancake.

The atmosphere here was it was a nice tiny restaurant with limited seating. Make sure to get reservations as it gets packed. We got the spicy raw marinated crab, kimchi pancake and pork bone soup. Raw marinated crab: (4/5) Nice fresh taste with decent amount of meat inside. The flavor was tasty but wish there was more of a garlic-y flavor and it was almost a bit too spicy to be enjoyable coming from a spice lover Kimchi Pancake: (...) Thought the kimchi flavor was a little lacking. It was very crispy as the other reviews said but I thought it was almost too crispy to the point where it kinda felt burnt tasting. In my opinion I think you can pass on this Pork Bone Soup: (5/5) This was my personal favorite. I liked how they didn't skip out on the meat in the soup. I read how they boil the soup for over 24 hours the flavor of the broth was so rich flavorful. Perfect for the rainy cold weather Server was nice but seemed like was managing too many tables I had to refill my own water regardless he was nice just shows it gets busy here

    Kimchi pancake with pork
    Meiyi Y.

Overall, delicious restaurant! The pork bone soup contained soft pork belly and seasoned with green onion along with black pepper. It was very comforting. The kimchi pancake was the thinnest and crispiest ones I've had. I couldn't quite taste the pork as much, but I loved the texture. The bossam assembly was tasty with the tender pork belly and crunchy kimchi. The atmosphere was elegant with wooden furnitures. Staff was also friendly.

Sungho provides Korean comfort food that is great for cold SF nights. Although located in the Tenderloin, Sungho is actually quite modern and chic. Also accompanied with an upbeat Kpop soundtrack, stepping inside transports you somewhere else completely. For a Saturday night, we were able to walk in around opening for table seating, but it did seem like reservations are highly recommended. The menu itself is also quite limited which is great because it is not too overwhelming like in some restaurants. Here is what we ordered: Beef short rib soup (4.5/5): Warm broth with strong peppery notes to give it that extra punch. The meat was tender and decent sized. Bossam (4/5): A slightly different take on traditional bossam which are pork wraps. It is a thinner cut of pork and with subtle herby flavor that had a bit of a nutty flavor. The accompaniments were good but the lettuce was cut so small that it was not as ideal to hold everything in the wrap. The service was good with staff coming by to check on us regularly. There is limited street parking nearby but may be best to Uber/Lyft if coming by for dinner. Overall, Sungho provides great Korean soul food that is worth a visit.

beef short rib soup + kimchi pancake + bossam
    Melody L.

This might be the most authentic Korean spot in the city! Beef short rib soup was so comforting on a cold day and balanced out the rest of the meal well. I absolutely devoured the bossam - had just the perfect amount of fattiness. Kimchi pancake was ultra thin and crispy, not to mention actually spicy, which was a nice surprise. Everything was washed down with a fruity and refreshing peach makgeolli. Sat at the bar and didn't feel cramped at all. Just wish this place was located a couple blocks or more north so i could feel safe walking here all the time!

I'd give this spot an 8.2, I liked this and it was quite authentic (albeit pricy). You go through the unsavory bits of Tenderloin to get here, but the interior is very chicly decorated. Directly adjacent areas are not too sketchy. We managed to get bar seating because table reservations were all filled up. My friend and I split the kimchi pancake, the kalguksu, and the spicy raw marinated crab. The kimchi pancake was good, it's not my favorite since I'm not a fan of Korean pancakes in general but my friend really liked it. It was quite flavorful and uniform all around, which I enjoyed. The dipping sauce also added some umami flavor to the satisfying crunchy texture of the pancake. The spicy raw marinated crab was really spicy! Also really good- the spots I've had in South Bay are honestly too salty for me. My nose was running a full marathon. Hats off to the server for kindly topping off my water so frequently. That one bowl of rice they bring out is not enough, but my friend was not having any issues with it. Definitely one of my weaker moments, but the flavor was great and the crab meat was so tender. It's not only spicy, you're still able to get some hints of sweetness. I cut myself on one of the pincers and the server fortunately bandaged me up and gave me some Neosporin- she said that this has never happened before and that I'm the first one! The kalguksu meat was so tender, I was shocked. The broth was so hearty and filling, the noodles were good, and the beef was plentiful. I liked the carrots and seaweed in this too, I would order this again. The soup is what stood out to me in my entire dinner. Overall the ambiance and kalguksu stood out to me, and the server went above and beyond.

Many, many years ago, my wife and I ate at Seoul Garden several times. We think that it was called the Emperor's Dinner which was a massive variety of Korean dishes. We're pretty sure that ownership of this restaurant must have changed since then. When we walked in and during the time we were there, we only saw one motorcyclist pick-up an order. There were no other guests. Our table was four adults and two kids. We all had different hunger levels so our order may be considered somewhat odd. The Banchan was excellent and the fact that he asked if we wanted more rather than us having to ask was great. Everything that we ordered was for sharing so people could get a taste of different items. I focused on the Jun, Mondoo, Wings and then did my best to clean up all the Banchan. Once you step through the doors, however, you're greeted by a space that feels both cozy and contemporary, with an effortlessly stylish atmosphere. Even the restroom was thoughtfully designed and remarkably comfortable--a small detail, but one that speaks to the restaurant's overall attention to detail. We began with the Uni Scallop Toast and Mulhwe as appetizers. As someone who is typically not a fan of uni due to its pronounced brininess, I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed the toast. The bright citrus sauce balanced the richness of the uni beautifully, while the contrasting textures from the crisp toast and delicate scallop created a harmonious bite. The scallop also helped mellow the stronger oceanic notes of the uni. It was a creative and memorable dish unlike anything I've had before. The Mulhwe, a Korean-style fish salad, was dressed in a refreshing apple vinaigrette that gave it a light, summery citrus character. The fish itself had a pleasantly chewy texture--firmer than salmon--with no trace of fishiness. While enjoyable, it didn't leave quite the same impression as the uni toast and was my least favorite dish of the evening. For our entrées, we ordered the Galbi Steak and Pork Jowl Bossam. Both dishes showcased exceptional execution. The meats were cooked perfectly, but what stood out even more was the precision in preparation. The steak was expertly sliced and incredibly tender--so much so that even with braces, it was effortless to enjoy. The pork jowl achieved an ideal balance between lean meat and luscious fat, creating a rich yet satisfying bite. We enjoyed the meal so much that dessert was non-negotiable. The Matcha Tiramisu was a creative interpretation of the classic. A dome of mascarpone cheese encased ladyfinger biscuits at its center, accompanied by a vibrant matcha ganache sauce. The dessert leaned far less sweet than traditional tiramisu, allowing the earthy matcha and creamy mascarpone flavors to shine. It was elegant, balanced, and a wonderful way to end the meal. Lastly, the service was outstanding. Our server was soft-spoken, patient, and genuinely attentive throughout the evening, making the experience feel warm and welcoming. Considering the quality of the food, thoughtful presentation, ambiance, and service, I found the pricing to be completely justified. As a pleasant surprise, I later learned that Bansang is part of the same restaurant group behind Daeho--a detail that certainly explains the level of quality we experienced.

I came in with my boyfriend maybe an hour before break time midday (unbeknownst to us) as the sign outside is faded and in LIGHT blue marker on a soju standee. Pro tip: maybe you should update that off to the side sign in small letters as well as your closing time on google + Apple Maps before you grumpily yell at your customers to leave AFTER taking our money and giving us food (which btw we were there about 30 minutes). Or don't seat us at all. Thanks! Would not recommend.

My friend went inside and a server reluctantly came to our table. We ordered $90 worth of food and enjoyed people walking around. When the food came the waitress brought the check with the food and asked for our credit card. We hadn't taken a bite yet. They never offed us to refill our glass of water. When we did go to pay they asked us if the credit we were using was ours and asked for his id. They seemed to treat the other guest better. Maybe it's because we are Black Americans or maybe they just suck. The food was subpar the fried chicken was overcooked and my stomach hurt all last night. I live up the street on Bush so this would be a local spot. The service was terrible so they will never get my business again. Yes black people live in the neighborhood and eat Korean food and have credit cards.

It turns out people collect their bottle caps in clear capsules. Fun idea. We were very pleased to hear Woodz for most of our dining experience. I love jokbal, and I've never had it served in this style. Usually I've had large platters of sliced meat, but this was a bowl of the boney parts. It was so delicious. It melted right off the bone, and it had a little heat. I want to go back for this alone. Also enjoyed a dish of kimchi fried rice and sotteok sotteok with a happy hour priced soju.

Unfortunately, most of the dishes fell pretty flat for me. Here's a breakdown of everything we tried: Mini Jeon - This came out as a set of three mini pancakes, and while they were fried expertly with a nice crisp exterior, I did not really get much of the ingredient flavors at all, which was supposed to have an array of vegetables and seafood. Truffle Bosot Fry - These were fantastic. Each enoki was fried so the stems were splayed out and then dusted in truffle salt. It was clear the chef has a deft hand at the fryer, as both of the first two starters had an amazing crunch to them. Spicy Tuna Tower - This seemed like a popular item, but it was really disappointing. It felt like a quantity over quality dish, with the spicy tuna indeed piled high, but very clumpy, as if it had just been scooped straight out of the fridge, and not a pleasant texture. There was not much flavor or spice to it and the kappa maki rolls that the tuna sat atop were unfortunately not made well, as most of them fell apart just from picking them up with chopsticks. K-Fried Chicken - Pretty good value since you get 8 decently sized pieces for $20, or $22 if you want to add a sauce. It was curious that they do not let you do half and half, since the sauces are likely pre-made and that is such a common option at most other KFC spots. The bigger issue was the fry on the chicken as huge pieces of batter were missing from every piece, and it did not have that signature shattering crunch I expect, which suggested the oil was not hot enough and that they did not double fry the chicken. The soy and garlic flavor was actually pretty good, so it was doubly disappointing that the chicken was not fried properly. Hwe-Muchim. - This dish was an absolute disaster. The cubes of fish and salad were absolutely drowning in cho-jang, and it was really unbalanced, so all you tasted was gochujang. The lettuce was so wilted under the sheer amount of liquid that it made the dish difficult to eat. I actually took this home, drained most of the liquid, rinsed off the fish, added fresh greens and a homemade dressing, and it tasted much better. The staff were friendly enough, but this place is clearly targeting a drinking or late-night crowd so I would avoid if your main goal is to enjoy the food itself. Seems like a fun enough place if you were just wanting to stop in and have some snacks with your drinks or as an end of night stop as the 4-cha or 5-cha (IYKYK).

I first started eating at this place around 1990 and have at times stopped going once I moved out of the city. I try to go at least once a year. Have always enjoyed their clams, dried fried chicken, jia jiang mian, and seafood noodle soup. Clams were still plentiful, plump, and very fresh. Noodle were still good. The owner recommended I try the Jjamppong and tubot. The jjamppong like their other noodles were good but the standout was the turbot: steamed to perfection, fresh, and tasty. I can't compare it to other fish but it was soft, smooth, and buttery. I have seen the owner before cooking in the kitchen but it looks now father time has caught up and he is thoroughly enjoying helping out in the front. He was talkative and pleasant to talk to.

So I found this place and we walked in with few customers. We ordered a soup, and were about to order something else when the server/cook suggested we order the meal for 3. He let us substitute the white rice for fried rice and cashew chicken for lemon chicken that we wanted. Boy was it a real treat. We added a chicken chow mein and we weren't disappointed. All in all, we came out stuffed with leftovers, and great service to boot. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time which was surprising, how great the food and service were. Come here and you won't regret it!

The wait for the dish was almost 25 mins but all worth it !The complimentary soup and banchan were huge and alright. Been here a couple of times already and the service never failed. Even came here during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the staff were still friendly / accommodating. They even put a spicy sauce on the side of one of the katsu plates when we mentioned that my dad couldn't handle all that haha. This cozy spot mainly focuses on katsu plates, but I like how they had off menu or specials to choose from if you'd like another option. I will say though them katsu plates were just chef's kiss. The meat is pounded thin enough where it's still juicy and tender, but doesn't affect the exterior from being crunchy and a bit flaky. Nothing was dry here yallll! I also like how it already comes with miso soup and salad. Huge fan of that Hamachi Truffle special though. Think of a citrusy flavor from the ponzu, fresh fish, a bit of micro greens, and a thin slice of jalapeño that just ~works~ on a cute wooden spoon that you want to steal I could honestly eat like 5 spoons of this. I'd skip on the calamari as it was kind of skimpy to share with a large group. Only note was that their fried katsu curry was a bit underwhelming with having more slices of carrots than potato! Would love to come back if I am ever in the area.

We stepped inside to put our names on the list. While we waited outside we checked out their menu, which was conveniently displayed on their window. The dishes sounded great and it helped us decide what to order before we were even seated. The restaurant was on the smaller side, so seating was a tad cramped, but overall it felt cozy. They had a cute neon light with their name. We got a couple appetizers, which included the pan fried dumplings and tteokbokki. I ordered the Spicy Japchae for my main dish. They brought the banchan out pretty quickly, which we all devoured in seconds because we were so hungry. Then our main dishes started coming out of the kitchen. My spicy japchae was just the right amount of heat. Spicy enough to still be enjoyable. While eating our main dishes the pan fried dumplings came out, which was odd since we ordered it as an appetizer. And the tteokbokki we had ordered, never was added to our order by our waiter. After being told that by another waiter, we just decided to cancel it. The meal was pretty filling without feeling too heavy. Overall, it was decent.
