My experience with service this location has always been pleasant. The smiles on all the staff with diverse ethnicity are warm. They consistently take my full basket to ring in the goods without making me place them on the counter. I like the spaciousness of this location. Never a traffic jam. Finding a sale item here and there is fun. The only thing I find is that their fruit is not as fresh. I bought a box of sugar mandarins yesterday. All of our family felt it tastes old and not very sweet. This is not the first time with fruits. Veggies are better but a miss once in a while as well. Everything else is fine and the place is well organized. I find shopping here much more at ease compared to the Richmond store. read more

Sungiven Foods Store City Square is my favourite grocery store in the neighbourhood. It is located conveniently on the ground level of the City Square Mall, has an excellent variety of groceries, vegetables, fruit , drinks etc. Even though good from the beginning, it improved even more after it's got the new Manager, Irene who rearranged the entrance and also offered free coffee for over three moths. Sungiven Foods is also a generous Donator of Flowers to the neighbouring LTC facility Banfield Pavilion, which is worth all kinds of praise for their generosity and kindness, by beautifying the lives of BP residents. I have been strongly and confidently recommending this store to all of my friends and family. read more

Was just here recently with my mother due to a medical appointment I had where it would require me to pass close by the mall this location was at, which is inside of the City Square Centre Mall. I recently started to go to the one at North Vancouver somewhat regularly because it's a lot closer to me, but because of that, I decided to visit this location inside this mall as well. The items and prices are all pretty much the same idea. They do sell some westernized items, but majority of the items that they seem to sell are primarily Asian oriented foods. My mother and I ended up primarily just gotten some vegetables & some meat (pork if memory serves). Definitely worth checking out if you were in the immediate area and hoping to snatch up a couple of Asian foods. PS. Pro tip - If memory serves, they were selling Heysong Sarsaparilla & this Apple Sidra (Apple soda/cider). Get them immediately if you see them. You will NOT regret it as they are freaking tasty if you enjoy root beer & apple soda related drinks. read more

Relatively new Asian Supermarket that occupied the space where Safeway used to be, from what I see, the new store only occupies about less than half of what Safeway used to be. You have your regular Asian fair with all the condiments and sauces, noodles, and other dried goods, what makes it different is that they carry their own Sungiven Brand products that focuses in organic, Non-GMO and Non-Pesticide, which is a good thing for consumers. I also like the fact that they carry some cooked items from the Kirin Restaurant that is just above the supermarket, but last I checked, the restaurant is either closed or under renovation. In any case, it is always a good thing to have another choice around this area and put a little bit of life back into this mall! read more

We read the receipt and saw that they overcharged us more for a Christmas item, so we returned to the cashier with the shelf price tag to request for the price difference. The cashier did not know what to do so she asked the cashier behind her. They both seemed lost and another cashier arrived. Then our cashier came back to us and rang the bell multiple times. We waited for a long time. A guy finally walked towards us from the back slowly, staring into his cell, knowing we had waited for a long time. He appeared to be the manager and fixed the computer issue. He then departed without apologizing to us or looking at us. However, our cashier still could not process the refund. So the cashier behind her came to help her. That cashier did not give us the credit card receipt so we asked for it. Then she told us to sign on the credit card receipt without giving us the customer's copy. So we asked for it and she said we signed the wrong one. She pointed her finger to the receipts and demanded us to sign both receipts very rudely when it was her fault that she did not give us the correct receipts to sign. The receipts were very clear but she tried to confuse us by mixing them up. Also, she did not need to keep pointing her fingers to the receipts so rudely with her demands when all of this was her fault. This is human decency never mind customer service. They were obviously mad because they did not want to do the refund (they never apologized and they made us wait for so long). They were irritated because we caught their mistake. They blamed the customers for correcting their mistakes. Absolutely unacceptable. P.S The janitor came to sweep beside us when we tried to browse the Christmas items so we needed to move away. That means they did not want customers to shop for the Christmas items. Otherwise, the janitor could have sweep later. Overall, the staff were poorly trained. Check the surveillance camera and see how the staff and management treated us. read more

COVID #3 If there's one thing mainland Chinese are good at and do, it's to make knock offs. And this store is a hybrid knock off. Hybrid you say? Yes I do say. First off, it's set up like Trader Joes, bell at the cashiers included. Well, if you didn't trademark it, guess what? It'll get copied by the Chinese. Second, it had more organic and natural food that is less processed. Reminiscent of Choices/Whole Paycheck Foods. Just ignore the instant noodles and Pocky. You gotta have some junk I guess. Not a bad store for Asian groceries if you want to avoid the crazy crowds at T&T. Selection is a little less. That's about the only downside. read more

New supermarket replacing the Safeway at City Square. Unfortunately, this one is somewhat disappointing. My mom had heard lots of good things about this new supermarket on the Chinese radio and newspaper. It is not what it seems from my experience. On the radio and newspaper, they mentioned that they hired a restaurant to make the to-go sushi, they have fresh dim sum available for sale and prices are super reasonable. So..... I came with my mom on December 21, 2019. Look like the hype has died down. Sungiven was very quiet. Produce and fruits are sold individually and not by weight. This is somewhat difficult to figure out if it is cheaper to buy from them or not. The isles are wide to waste space, I guess. The store layout reminded me of Trader Joe in the USA. They have some gluten free or organic items for sale. Not sure if that would attracts customers to the store. Some of the meat and produce don't look very fresh. Well this is surely a one time deal for me. Guess I won't be coming here often. Parking is free with any purchase. read more

I walk by this place every day and decided to see what it was about! I've never seen it before and curiosity got to me.... It was beautiful and so chic inside! The next day, my co worker and I were talking about their take away meals! Hot and cold were available. The variety of what was available was amazing! We tried their BBQ pork buns and it tasted too sweet! Almost like you were eating maple syrup... wasn't a winner. Although, the black truffle Sio Mai was amazing!! Filling and so delicious! It got our vote! We will be dropping by again to try more of their food choices!!! read more

I walked in on day 2 of their grand opening weekend. One of the things I noticed in their produce section is they didn't have a scale, and they sold everything in each's. Like, bananas were priced at 25 cents per banana. Unless you remember your banana weights from shopping at other markets, you won't know if you are paying more or less here. They seem to take my feedback quite seriously so that was nice, hope to see they follow through with adding a scale. Next thing that disappoints (although T&T is just as bad) is their excessive use of single use plastics and foam in the produce aisle. This is why I avoid shopping at T&T because they can't seem to stop packaging and bundling their produce into glossy plastic wrapped units. This undermines their slightly sustainable practice of offering paper grocery bags (instead of plastic). If I can find one clean, fresh, accessible Asian grocery store in this city that is truly sustainable (eliminating disposable plastics) with trusted food sources and ethical practices, I will be an instant fan and likely shop there as my primary store. If Sungiven wants to distinguish themselves as better than T&T, and be more community focused, they need to make more sustainable choices. Sungiven Foods occupies the space once held by Safeway at City Square. It is a Chinese-owned grocery store chain with its headquarters in China and stores in several countries. Think T & T meets Whole Foods. They carry organic produce and meat that is advertised as hormone-free, etc. You'll find familiar, local brands like Avalon Dairy, but they also have Asian ingredients and products you might not be able to find a typical grocery store. The store was very clean and well-organized, albeit it was the second day of being open. You won't find plastic bags here as it doesn't align with their core value of sustainability. I will continue to shop primarily at my local BC owned grocery store, but a grocery store in City Square is convenient and much needed. read more

Hi there I went shopping a couple weeks ago at this location. We purchased the chicken ..two breasts It was July 20th The expiry date on the chicken was July 22 and they had 25% off Normally I do not buy discounted product I live across from whole foods on Cambie But we purchased it anyways Thought we would try the store. Well when I cut open the package and stuck a fork inside and put the chicken directly in the marinade...Well I already knew it all needed to be thrown out The smell was absolutely absolutely disgusting. I had to open all the doors in the windows. We had to take the garbage downstairs immediately. It was absolutely disgusting. The meat was rotten. I contacted the head office. They told me to go in give them the date and time when we would go in again to get our refund on the $20 chicken. It's not the money honestly but it's the principal so we told him we'd be there Saturday at noon we went there. They had no idea what we were talking about now they're trying to ask me for a receipt and all this shit for stuff that honestly was bought on June 20. I obviously don't keep receipts for my groceries. Not expecting the meat to be rotten , I will never shop in the store again and they didn't give us the money and now they're giving us a runaround. Just had an extremely unpleasant and what felt like a COVID-unsafe experience here. The place was very busy and felt like too many people were inside generally. There were long lines. There isn't much by the way of marked lineups, so people weren't socially distancing in the lines and they just go down the aisle where other shoppers are as well. I reached the front of my line after about a 10 minute wait, when the person working there just pointed over to the next cashier and walked away. I tried to ask her if someone was replacing her but she just said she was done for the day and walked away. After a moment's confusion a couple of people from my line started going to the back of the line the cashier had pointed at, and I did too. It took another close to 10 minutes to get to the front of that line, and I could see a bunch of people from my first line were still dutifully standing in line, even though no one was actually working that register. I tried to tell my cashier that things seemed disorganized and unsafe but she just said the manager was busy. So overall it was an unpleasant and chaotic shopping trip. It doesn't feel as well organized or COVID safe as the other grocery stores in the area, and management seemed totally absent. I don't want to come back here. read more

The homemade red bean soup has no red beans in it and it tastes like burnt beans. Everything from this store is overpriced. Asian foods can be very interesting and healthy but sadly, most of the Asian foods they carry are junk foods and are way more expensive than any other Asian food store's prices. They have a very limited variety and quantity of everything. The employees seem to be very nervous all the time so I don't bother to ask them anything but I don't think I will be interested in returning. It's a pity that Safeway is no longer there. read more

Oh, the sadness when Safeway left. And oh, the glee when Sungiven arrived! Sure, it's smaller, and sure, it stocks a lot of Asian ingredients. But it has the basics for a western pantry, and its proximity nudged me to try learning a bit more about Chinese cookery. Regardless, the fresh section is wonderful: the meats taste great, there's a huge array of vegetables (and fruit), and it's the only grocery I've been to where the cashier thought the veggies I was buying weren't up to snuff and urged me to go back and find nicer ones. They looked fine to me, but she's the expert! In addition to Chinese items, they have a wide selection of Japanese foods. Oh, and the prices are great. No sticker shock. Especially for their fresh veggies, it feels like I'm getting away with something, the prices are so good. read more

Sungiven Foods is a new asian grocery store that occupies the space that was formerly Safeway at City Square. They specialize in non-GMO, organic, and non-pesticide products so you would expect their prices to be slightly higher than a regular grocery store. With that said, I still find the prices to be completely reasonable and consider them comparable to Choices Market for produce and meats. There is also a good selection of asian snacks available and the shopping aisles are quite a bit more spaced out leading to a pleasant, non-cluttered shopping experience. The store also validates parking in the City Square lot up to 2 hours. read more

This is a very pleasant supermarket. The staff is helpful and polite. The aisles are wide. With wood floors it is quiet and calm inside. The selection is quite varied for a somewhat small supermarket, and does include a good choice of Asian foods ( I think, I being a white guy, not be the best judge.) The vegetables are fresh. What is most surprising to me is the prices are very reasonable and often lower than or equal to other markets such as No Frills or Save-On for some products. This is true of vegetables and some of their dairy products as well as other. I Just got a dozen extra large free range eggs for $5.49. There is free underground parking off of either Cambie or Ash Streets I would like to think we can support smaller markets. read more

What a great grocery store! I decided to check this place out and ended up getting some fun neat stuff. They have a charcoal bread that sounds weird is really tasty. I also grabbed one of their prepack meals which I ate in the food court. Another fun thing i found was their delicious fried fish skin and salted egg. I will shop here for small orders when I'm at City Square.On my first visit,I picked up some British Cheese for $5 and a bag of Organic Mini potatoes for $3.Prices are comparable to maybe the Superstore and are reasonable.They have a line of Frontier Spices that are cheaper than Choices.and was delighted to find The Bread Garden individual pastries for only $1.50,I choose a slice of Cranberry Orange Loaf and it was delicious.Many of their foods didn't interest me but enough did,so I will shop in the store at least monthly for treats. read more

(I want to mention that advertised free parking is a scam.) The store was a little smaller than I expected and the way they sell the items is different compared to most grocery stores. They sell some produce items you expect by each instead of weight, which is neat. They use large paper bags at the checkout, which I find that different in comparison to most stores. Overall, I think it's a cute little store that tries to do more for its community. What really brings this rating down is that the first time we bought something at the store, I still had to pay for the parking. We literally only went into the store for less than 30 minutes and I had to pay $4.25. Ninety minutes free parking is literally a scam. :( I wouldn't drive to the parkade again. Next time I go to this place, I'd probably just take transit. read more

I visited there and found that the place was very clean and well-organized, the shopping aisles were quite more spaced leading to a very comfortable shopping experience. I found many high quality products and Asian snacks there and the prices were reasonable, even those organic items ,prices were good. You could also purchase local brands there. They offered paper bags instead of plastic bags. Packing is convenient and free up to 2 hours. I went back two days ago and I will continue to shop there primarily. read more
