We went based on my mother's gluten intolerance. Good food generally. Shady policies. $1.50 blueberries additional for waffles, except they aren't fresh. They are frozen and mushy. When asked to replace for fresh, got a friendly yes. Then bananas came - funny fresh blueberries we said. " Oh, we like to have blueberries all year round so they are frozen" . Misleading. Not cool. Wholesome, sustainable, fresh food located in a neighborhood I rarely venture to. But a friend had been raving about Sunlight for months and I finally got the opportunity to experience it for myself. We arrived mid-afternoon on a (Sunday) Seahawks game day and that may have explained why it was so quiet. First feeling was surprise at its large space. Two separate seating areas divided by the kitchen. I don't remember much about the decor except for noting it was worn yet comfortable. I poured over the menu and decided on the black bean burrito. It comes with red sauce or green sauce or both! I was feeling adventurous and chose green. My friend had the tempeh tacos which I had a sample of and they're divine. Our food took awhile (about 20-25 minutes) which I thought odd since they weren't busy. However, once the food arrived I forgot all about that. The burrito came in a whole wheat tortilla with rice, black beans, carrots, bell peppers and other yumminess. I am by no means a vegetarian, but I appreciate sustainable, fresh food whenever possible. I have since been back and had my own plate of tempeh tacos and let me say my belly was very satisfied. The wait staff have been OK, but some enthusiasm would be nice. I've been in the customer service business for many years and I understand some days are just not your day. None of the staff have ever been rude, but detachment is apparent with some of them and I was a little put off by it. Nevertheless, the food itself is reason enough to visit. They do appreciate a customer paying in cash in order to keep costs down, but do accept plastic. read more

I give this place 3 stars out of charity. They wobble back and forth between 2 and 3, depending on how stoned they are. Usually 3 if you catch them when its not too busy. But the breakfast stuff is typically pretty decent. Just dont go when you are in a hurry. read more

Being a Vegetarian can be a pain in the rear sometimes but the Sunlight makes it all worth it. It doesn't matter what day or time it is they always have some great soup and yogi tea waiting for you. I highly recommend this place to anyone with a mouth. read more

I'll give this one a 4.5 My husband and I decided to drop in yesterday and try out a new spot in the neighborhood. This place is very laid back and the staff is quite friendly. We got there right in time for happy hour and some delicious treats! We had the salad rolls, tempeh tacos, veggie quesadilla, and polenta. Everything was great, we especially loved the tempeh tacos! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, even non-vegetarians. read more

My favorite casual eating place. It's one of the few places in Seattle that has brown rice. I also like the fact that the salad comes with organic greens. I always ask them to stem the cauliflower a bit when I order the salad. I like raw broccoli, but not raw cauliflower. The thing I REALLY like is their lemon tahini dressing. Sometimes I make a point of going there just to buy a bottle to take home. It's on the southeast corner of 64th and Roosevelt, with big, floor-to-ceiling windows, which means it gets lots of natural light, and I love to go there and read the paper. The music is usually quiet. They put the works of local artists on the wall. It's reminiscent to me of an older, more graceful Seattle, before the hard-core capitalists and hipsters moved in, with their garish noise and high prices. The food is plain and simple. It's vegetarian, and cooked from scratch, not frozen and micro-waved. Some items are too spicy for me, but I just avoid them. The service is competent and not over-intrusive. It is a bit worn. If you like high-maintenance, up-to-the-minute fashionable ambiance, you will be disappointed. I don't think they've changed a booth or table in twenty years. read more

The atmosphere is very casual and comfortable, and the staff is super friendly. Do not order the tofu 'scramble', nothing is scrambled, just large chunks of unflavored tofu, with big undercooked veggies, sitting in a pool of soy-type sauce. The homefries were decent but not fully cooked. I'm giving a two star because my sister's meal was pretty ok, but for mine I'd give it a one. I'm vegan and I expect a little more in the way of flavor in a restaurant that bills itself as vegetarian. At least the service was good. read more

My boyfriend really likes this place and took me here for breakfast the other week. We got blueberry hotcakes and one of the scramble specials, and shared three cups of their house chai. YUMMMMMMMMM. The pancakes were so freaking delishiouuuuus. And I loved that the chai was spicy and not pre-sweetened. This is huge for me, because it's really hard to find good, spicy chai that doesn't have sugar added in the mix. The scramble was standard yummy--though I really appreciated that the cook subbed feta for swiss (duh) even though the sign said NO subs. Been excitingly eating at the Sunlight Cafe since the 80's and it's a great place for wholesome tasty affordable food. The Saute Veggies, Nutburger, Peanut Butter Pie and Brunch are some of the best and unique plates in town. If you like real food for real people this is it. The staff are all nice people. This place is delicious. Its got the best waffle I can think of in my experience of eating waffles. The waffle is pretty much the only thing I order when I eat there (its giant and so so good that it pretty much rules out eating anything else imo). First time here, I had time to kill and wanted a quick bite before an appointment I had, quiet(was Monday) ordered a portobello burger not expecting much never really eaten at a vegetarian restaurant . Good coffee and nice music, but otherwise The Worst service my husband and I have ever experienced. I consider myself to be a pretty sympathetic customer, as long as it seems like you're at least TRYING I'm a-ok. But our breakfast went as follows: -seated -ask waitress for coffee and cream -receive coffee from waitress but no cream -wait 30 minutes, (black) coffees during this time are emptied -finally get to order food from waitress, ask for more coffee/cream again; we don't receive it -food arrives; we ask the food server for more coffee because our waitress is still nowhere to be found -a different waiter delivers our coffee -we finish our meals and wait some more before finally waiving down a waiter for our check --Food was somewhere between average and just not good. My egg dish had an entire bulb's worth of garlic cloves which I can actually say with 100% certainty because all of the cloves were left WHOLE, so I could count them all. I felt lucky that the cloves themselves were nearly flavorless. -we wait for another 10-15 minutes for someone to pick up our cash/check which doesn't ever happen, so we eventually leave without leaving a tip (a first time for both of us). I don't know if this service is common or if after the first time our waitress forgot about us she figured she wasn't getting a tip so she just didn't bother at that point. During all our time spent waiting we noticed other people in our area were also frequently looking around and shaking their heads, clearly also wondering where our waitress was, and we heard her apologizing to another couple seated behind us for getting their order wrong. This place is a stupendous Roosevelt tradition! The staff was incredibly friendly and took the time to get to know you. Large open space with natural light. The food was incredible. The lemon poppyseed waffle with your choice of fruit was out of this world. Finishing that off with a side of potatoes with a surfeit of garlic proved to be the carb-stravaganza I was just craving. Always disappointing... Terrible coffee, -- especially for $1.90 a cup -- my eggs were made wrong, and once I lifted my toast from my potatoes, they were more charcoal than edible. The service was even sub-par. Even my vegan girlfriend agreed we not come back for awhile, until they got their act together. We have been customers since the 1970's; however over the past 5 years, as the owner's presence has declined, so has the food quality, service, and general feeling of cleanliness and sanitation. More than once, I have made comments about people not using plastic gloves. If they do, they still use their hands to touch everything and not change gloves very often. It's not unusual to see more exposed skin and hairy body parts near food than I care to specifically mention. Some of the help's clothing is so old looking, it would not surprise me if it had not been washed very often, as well...same goes for head and facial hair. It's kind of "anything goes" in terms of what the staff wears. Too many times, I have seen the same cloth used to wipe down the counter with those plastic gloves that go on to make a salad on that counter with no rinsing...which is why I stopped ordering anything fresh that has to touch the counter or handled directly by the plastic gloved hands. We began only ordering things that come directly off of the hot stove or hot oven or something we can heat again and kill off any lingering bacteria. Lately, we have stopped frequenting except on occasion when we know the owner is on site and to order items that don't require a lot of staff handling, cutting, or chopping on the cutting board. But I think we will probably stop frequenting all together, because it doesn't feel good that there is so little regard for these matters by staff. The attitude about cleanliness or sanitation seems strongly incongruent with the notion of serving folks a healthy diet. Complaining should not just work for that moment or when observing on site. read more
