    Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars
    Eva M.

We were in the Wallingford area and searched on Yelp for a place to eat and opted for Almanqal. The restaurant itself is a bit old but doable. The décor is function over form, i.e. basic. There were two staff members at the front, both of whom also prep food, cook, or grill. She told us to order at the cash register, but others had their order taken at their table later. While they have tables to sit-down, service was limited. They were also busy with takeout orders during the peak dinner time of 6pm. It wasn't until the end of dinner rush that they walked around the tables to refill water. Understandable given their small family business. The food is pretty good, more at a neighborhood scale; I wouldn't categorize them as 'worth the drive'. Prices are reasonable for the food, not high, not a bargain, either. The Food: Fried Cauliflower with tahini sauce, $10.50 - 4 Stars I have a strong affinity to Mediterranean fried cauliflower. Theirs is slightly soft but crispy on the outside nonetheless. Could be better, but we still liked it. Eggplant pickles, $9.99 - 3 Stars Menu: Grilled Eggplant, garlic, lemon juice, cilantro, The problem with ordering at the cash register is I tend to forget to ask question(s). My eyes lit up with 'grilled eggplant' (which I love) and neglected to ask if this is a hot or cold dish. It is a COLD dish and the keyword is 'pickles'. Chopped bits of pickle things covered the grilled eggplant slices. Cold eggplant is not that good, imo. Lamb Kebab Salad, $18.99 - 3 Stars Again, due to ordering at the register, I forgot to ask what kind of salad. While the lamb kebab pieces are very tender and good, the salad consists of uninspiring iceberg lettuce with tiny bits of tomato and tiny shreds of onions. Minus a star for the salad part. Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars This dish is served with one appetizer. We chose baba ghanoush. The fact this dish comes with a full-size appetizer makes this much more worthwhile than the salad. The lamb pieces are tender, and the rice is flavorful. The baba ghanoush is also good. Thumbs up for the trio. The overall rating should be 3.5 stars. I normally round down to 3 stars for the minimal service, but I am rounding up to 4 stars for the small family business.

Tasty Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean restaurant. Chicken kabobs were very tender and flavorful. The mezzo platter was great with spicy hummus, babaganoush, Dolmas and fried cauliflower. The pita breads were a bit thick to my liking but still quite tasty. Street parking is hit or miss. Liked the place, and may revisit.

Ordered the chicken kebab salad for takeout and it was veryyyy different than what was pictured on Yelp. I think the picture was mislabeled. So adding accurate picture of what the chicken kebab salad is. For what it was it was pretty okay. Too much dressing and the veggies were kinda over saturated. I'll have to try this again and hopefully get more accurate food

Have you ever looked at a piece of bread and thought that it looked better to sleep on than your pillows at home? That's how I felt after looking at Almanqal's pita bread. I swear I saw the guy at the table next to me break it open to take a nap inside. But this culinary experience is one that you do not want to sleep through. Whether you have their food in wrap or platter form, you are in for a special meal. The meats are somehow both crispy AND juicy, the veggies are fresh, and the plethora of dips are incredibly flavorful. The gyro here was exactly what I needed. The crispy golden fries were the ideal dipping vessel to experience the 4 options that you can get with the mezze platter. Spicy hummus was the winner for sure, but you can't go wrong with any of them. A special shoutout to the cauliflower too. I'm always impressed when a restaurant can make cauliflower into an elite dish. Sometimes it's hard to choose between options on 45th street, but Almanqal stands out.

The food is extremely good. Fresh and tasty, not heavy or oily. Made when you order. My husband was hungry when he ordered, so we ended up with several different dishes (a lot went home). All were exceptional. The owner was very gregarious.

Come here after work when in the mood for a great "comfort food" style meal, no fuss, no drama, and great value. Service is great, ambiance is low key and relaxing.

My partner and I came in for a weekend lunch since we were craving some Mediterranean food. The interior is a little confusing haha. The vibes are kinda woodsy cabin especially with the antler chandelier, but also had lots of evil eye decorations. Nonetheless, it was cozy and homely. We were greeted by the owner, we ordered and paid at the counter and sat at a table. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, and we shared a fried cauliflower appetizer that their entrees come with. The fried cauliflower was delicious. It's not really deep fried or anything, but has enough "roastiness" to boost its flavor. Chicken shawarma wrap was juuuuicy. Chicken was flavorful and tender, sauce brought the pita, chicken and veggies together. Fun bonus! They give super fresh super hot pita for the table and the bite of beef kofta I had was also really flavorful and juicy. Overall, glad we stumbled on this place. Has solid food!

Food is always amazing especially the chicken owner is super friendly and the food is incredibly authentic

I was really excited to try their wraps but unfortunately both my falafel and my partner's chicken wraps were just kinda meh. We were both a little disappointed. It felt kinda soggy and the veggies didn't taste as fresh. The fries were tasty and I did enjoy those. I got to go and the bag ripped about 2 blocks away while I was crossing the street and thankfully I was able to catch it and save it. I had to go into the grocery store for another bag. The service was fine and it had a cute but small dinning area. It was a bit chilly so if you're dinning in you may want to bring a sweater and if doing to go, ask for double bagging.

Falafel ( 5 pieces ) Sides: Fried Cauliflower & Fattoush

Ate in once years ago and remember it's warm and cozy feel. Got takeout last week and the warmth came with the food! Food is always delicious, albeit a bit pricey. But everything tastes super fresh! Baba ghanoush is smooth and smoky (note: only comes with 1 piece of pita, wasn't enough). Fried cauliflower is probably my favorite side! Fattoush is the only mediocre item I wouldn't recommend (soggy, flavorless). Greek fries are big, raw garlic forward, but good. Vegetarian option is falafel, and it's good!! Nothing ground breaking, but reliably delicious and filling every time. Always happy to return

Lamb - don't get it - dry and overpriced

got the Notorious PIG sandwich and the Buttermilk Biscuit while I was here…read more Starting with the sandwich, there were a ton of things to love about this The very first thing I noticed was how all-time crispy the pork belly was. Interestingly, the meat came in two separate pieces, arranges somewhat like an X or a cross in the middle of the sandwich. This certainly wasn't the eating experience of a typical sandwich with a circular meat patty, and I appreciate the creativity here. The meat was insanely crunchy, oily, and quite plentiful. Each bite felt a bit like you were biting into a crunchy churro, but without the sweetness. I did think the outside of the pork did overpower the inside, though, as I didn't taste the meat or the fat inside much, and due to the amount of breading the pieces ended up being a bit chewy The bun was quite good as well - it was pretty soft, fluffy, and served as a really good bookend to all the ingredients inside. I thought the lettuce and onions also were good. I don't know if I'm a fan of the jelly on the sandwich - but again, I do like the creativity. What did shine here was the aioli, however. In a lot of places, you don't really taste the aioli on a burger - but that flavor was ever-present on this sandwich, and it was really fantastic. The absolute best part of the meal, by far, though, was the biscuit I have to start with how huge this is. This is certainly not the size of a typical Southern-style buttermilk biscuit - rather this biscuit makes no apologies in its effort to stand out from the crowd. Absolutely nobody would mistake this for a traditional biscuit - on the contrary, I think on first glance most people would assume this isn't a biscuit at all. It's shaped more like a massive pastry. I hesitate to say that looks are deceiving, because it does look great, but its taste manages to elevate past that. This was SO good. The edges are baked perfectly - they're oily, crispy, crunchy, and perfectly flaky. All four sides provide an amazing base - like the walls of a fortress that surround the soft, tender interior of the biscuit. You can see the different layers from the outside as well. When it comes to the inside, there was so much to get through but every bite was heavenly. So much credit here goes to the honey butter - which when spread onto the biscuit, raises the taste level of the entire thing. I put so much honey butter on mine that I nearly finished the whole thing. When it came to the jam, it was good, but since it didn't combine great with the honey butter I mostly ended up just using the latter This place was expensive - around 16 dollars for the sandwich and 8 for the biscuit - however, I was quite full at the end

However, today may have been an off day for the team and there were a few new faces. After a long day of work, I just wanted grab food and go home. I ordered takeout for my family's dinner tonight, and unfortunately, the portion sizes were inconsistent. The beef curry and chicken curry were only half-full containers, and the three large orders of rice were also barely half-full. Additionally, the spring rolls appeared fresh, but their quality was questionable. It may have been an off day, and certainly a couple of new staff. However, it was disappointing considering the usual quality of their food and price point. Before writing this review, I had already prepared the curries in a pan. Therefore, they are not pictured. My family noticed them before I reheated the dish, and subsequently, I reviewed the order and decided to share my thoughts.

Oh, and a vodka lemonade - you can get cocktails delivered via DoorDash! Everything was super good, especially the chili cheese dog. They were really generous with the chili (a full cup of it) and it was delicious. The lemonade is made from scratch and I really enjoyed that, as well - not too sweet. When we did takeout, we each got a sandwich, and we also got a Chicago dog, "chum bucket" w/ tots, and a handful of cocktails. I'd had kind of a bad week and was basically like, I don't even care, let's just get whatever we want even if it's an insane amount of stuff, haha. They do single serving craft cocktails for takeout in little cans, which is pretty cool. And they were SO GOOD (all with very clever nautical-themed names). I think our favorite was the "No Ship Sherlock" seasonal Moscow mule. The Chicago dog was amazing - based on this and my previous chili cheese dog, I can say without hesitation that their hotdogs are 100% 10/10. The "chum bucket" tots were also really good, and again came with a very generous full cup of chili. I hate to say it because everything else was so good, but the sandwiches were pretty disappointing for the price, we both thought. I had a tuna sandwich and my bf had a veggie sandwich. They used fresh, quality ingredients, but both sandwiches were kind of bland, and a lot smaller than we were expecting for $14 apiece. That's the only reason I dropped a star, but aside from that, they are 5 star all the way. So, we would not revisit the sandwiches, but hotdogs and cocktails HELL YES YES YES!! Anything involving the chili is also highly recommended. And although I didn't really go into detail about it, chicken tenders were good, too (there were more in there than what the photo shows) - crispy and well-seasoned, and more than what I was expecting.
