    Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars
    Eva M.

We were in the Wallingford area and searched on Yelp for a place to eat and opted for Almanqal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is a bit old but doable. The décor is function over form, i.e. basic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There were two staff members at the front, both of whom also prep food, cook, or grill. She told us to order at the cash register, but others had their order taken at their table later. While they have tables to sit-down, service was limited. They were also busy with takeout orders during the peak dinner time of 6pm. It wasn't until the end of dinner rush that they walked around the tables to refill water. Understandable given their small family business. The food is pretty good, more at a neighborhood scale; I wouldn't categorize them as 'worth the drive'. Prices are reasonable for the food, not high, not a bargain, either. The Food: Fried Cauliflower with tahini sauce, $10.50 - 4 Stars I have a strong affinity to Mediterranean fried cauliflower. Theirs is slightly soft but crispy on the outside nonetheless. Could be better, but we still liked it. Eggplant pickles, $9.99 - 3 Stars Menu: Grilled Eggplant, garlic, lemon juice, cilantro, The problem with ordering at the cash register is I tend to forget to ask question(s). My eyes lit up with 'grilled eggplant' (which I love) and neglected to ask if this is a hot or cold dish. It is a COLD dish and the keyword is 'pickles'. Chopped bits of pickle things covered the grilled eggplant slices. Cold eggplant is not that good, imo. Lamb Kebab Salad, $18.99 - 3 Stars Again, due to ordering at the register, I forgot to ask what kind of salad. While the lamb kebab pieces are very tender and good, the salad consists of uninspiring iceberg lettuce with tiny bits of tomato and tiny shreds of onions. Minus a star for the salad part. Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars This dish is served with one appetizer. We chose baba ghanoush. The fact this dish comes with a full-size appetizer makes this much more worthwhile than the salad. The lamb pieces are tender, and the rice is flavorful. The baba ghanoush is also good. Thumbs up for the trio. The overall rating should be 3.5 stars. I normally round down to 3 stars for the minimal service, but I am rounding up to 4 stars for the small family business.

Tasty Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean restaurant. Chicken kabobs were very tender and flavorful. The mezzo platter was great with spicy hummus, babaganoush, Dolmas and fried cauliflower. The pita breads were a bit thick to my liking but still quite tasty. Street parking is hit or miss. Liked the place, and may revisit.

Ordered the chicken kebab salad for takeout and it was veryyyy different than what was pictured on Yelp. I think the picture was mislabeled. So adding accurate picture of what the chicken kebab salad is. For what it was it was pretty okay. Too much dressing and the veggies were kinda over saturated. I'll have to try this again and hopefully get more accurate food

Have you ever looked at a piece of bread and thought that it looked better to sleep on than your pillows at home? That's how I felt after looking at Almanqal's pita bread. I swear I saw the guy at the table next to me break it open to take a nap inside. But this culinary experience is one that you do not want to sleep through. Whether you have their food in wrap or platter form, you are in for a special meal. The meats are somehow both crispy AND juicy, the veggies are fresh, and the plethora of dips are incredibly flavorful. The gyro here was exactly what I needed. The crispy golden fries were the ideal dipping vessel to experience the 4 options that you can get with the mezze platter. Spicy hummus was the winner for sure, but you can't go wrong with any of them. A special shoutout to the cauliflower too. I'm always impressed when a restaurant can make cauliflower into an elite dish. Sometimes it's hard to choose between options on 45th street, but Almanqal stands out.

The food is extremely good. Fresh and tasty, not heavy or oily. Made when you order. My husband was hungry when he ordered, so we ended up with several different dishes (a lot went home). All were exceptional. The owner was very gregarious.

Come here after work when in the mood for a great "comfort food" style meal, no fuss, no drama, and great value. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service is great, ambiance is low key and relaxing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

My partner and I came in for a weekend lunch since we were craving some Mediterranean food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is a little confusing haha. The vibes are kinda woodsy cabin especially with the antler chandelier, but also had lots of evil eye decorations. Nonetheless, it was cozy and homely.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were greeted by the owner, we ordered and paid at the counter and sat at a table. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, and we shared a fried cauliflower appetizer that their entrees come with. The fried cauliflower was delicious. It's not really deep fried or anything, but has enough "roastiness" to boost its flavor. Chicken shawarma wrap was juuuuicy. Chicken was flavorful and tender, sauce brought the pita, chicken and veggies together. Fun bonus! They give super fresh super hot pita for the table and the bite of beef kofta I had was also really flavorful and juicy. Overall, glad we stumbled on this place. Has solid food!

I was really excited to try their wraps but unfortunately both my falafel and my partner's chicken wraps were just kinda meh. We were both a little disappointed. It felt kinda soggy and the veggies didn't taste as fresh. The fries were tasty and I did enjoy those. I got to go and the bag ripped about 2 blocks away while I was crossing the street and thankfully I was able to catch it and save it. I had to go into the grocery store for another bag. The service was fine and [[HIGHLIGHT]]it had a cute but small dinning area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a bit chilly so if you're dinning in you may want to bring a sweater and if doing to go, ask for double bagging.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Food is always amazing especially the chicken owner is super friendly and the food is incredibly authentic

I had to pick a place everyone would enjoy, and, ideally, somewhere we could actually get a reasonable-hour reservation. After a few rounds of back-and-forth, we settled on this place. It was a bit of a walk from our hotel, but no biggie. The restaurant itself is charming, and the hot, fresh pita breads coming out of the oven were a very good omen. The rest of our party arrived, and we were seated toward the back of the room. At first, I noticed a little door literally right next to our table and thought, "UGH, the bathroom is on top of us." Nope. It was a prayer room. So... fine. Then BAM, the bad news. We wanted to order cocktails, and they don't serve any alcohol. WHOOPS, my bad! But honestly, how often do you come across that scenario? A nice restaurant that takes reservations, has a full dinner menu, and serves absolutely no booze. I clearly missed that detail when I made the reservation. Fortunately, the food more than made up for my cocktail disappointment. It started with the fresh pita and some kind of crack oily/herby dip they served with it. If they sold this stuff by the bottle, I would have bought some. Seriously, it was unbelievable. I could have made a meal out of the bread and dip alone - and who is saying I didn't?. My man and I split a mixed meat platter. I honestly can't remember everything that was on it because I was trying to pay attention to getting to know the people I was about to spend 10 days cruising with. I do remember that everything was quite tasty, well roasted, and that the pork was my favorite. So, come for the food, the fresh pita, and that ridiculously addictive dip. Just know before you go: you will not be ordering a cocktail with dinner. But more good news, is that the bill without alcohol will be cheaper.

The host asked us to wait outside and said she would come get us when our table was ready. A family who was already waiting outside was called in shortly after, and we continued waiting. We saw several parties leave and many people come in and get seated right away, so we assumed they had reservations. After waiting about 25 minutes, we went back inside to check on our table. The host told us that we "didn't leave a phone number," even though we were never asked for one and were told to wait outside until she comes get us. Instead of acknowledging the mistake, she complimented my shirt mid-conversation, which felt like she was trying to brush it off. The entire time we were outside, we were the only people waiting, and we even saw her setting up the outside seating as the restaurant got busier. She never once checked in with us or said anything. The food was good, and our service once we were seated was great. Unfortunately, our first interaction with the host left a bad first impression and took away from the overall experience. That's why we're taking off two stars.

I arrived 20 minutes before opening and was first in line. One friend joined me 10 minutes later. At 5pm it was just the two of us, so I asked for a table for 4 and explained that I'd happily order food and drinks for everyone immediately, even though the rest of the group was still fighting the weekday traffic. The hostess refused, so we stepped aside. 2 minutes later our 3rd friend arrived. I asked the group behind us if they minded us getting back in line. They laughed and said it was no problem because they had just had their 3rd person arrive as well. When I got back in line, the hostess deliberately skipped over me and called the next group instead. After seating them, I stopped her and asked for a table for 3. She asked if it would "really" be just 3. At that point I honestly didn't know. Our 4th friend was driving from Everett and had texted that she was stuck in standstill traffic. I said yes, seat the 3 of us. The hostess told us to wait while she seated yet another group, taking the last indoor table. We were then placed outside on a hot day. Despite how the evening started, I did exactly what I'd said I would. We ordered dinner for the entire group, including 2 bottles of wine to avoid inconveniencing them with making drinks. Then, incredibly, the hostess came back to our table and removed the 4th chair to make absolutely sure our last friend couldn't join us if she arrived. It felt petty, unnecessary, and frankly embarrassing. What should have been a joyful reunion became a stressful experience because of one person's rigid and unwelcoming attitude. The food was equally inconsistent. The labneh was extremely sour and came with cold, slightly stale pita. The squid & lamb were overly salty. The kohlrabi with peaches was so aggressively smoky that we left almost the entire dish untouched. The mushrooms were fine. The grilled pork was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. The cod was just okay, and the desserts were average. We spent ~$500 for the meal. People don't spend this kind of money just for the food. The price reflects the entire experience, and that's where this restaurant failed. The service felt cold, impersonal, and overly focused on rules instead of hospitality. Rather than making guests feel welcome, the hostess made us feel like a problem she had to manage. I've had warmer, friendlier service at fast food restaurants. I won't be returning, and I took the time to write this review because no meal, especially one marking such a meaningful reunion, should be overshadowed by such an unnecessarily unpleasant welcome.

Ended up sampling 3 of their wrap options and the Zaatar Wrap was deliciously nutty and fragrant, but texturally there was so many herbs that the center ate a little dry. The Lahme Khuruf (Lamb) was my favorite by far with super juicy ground meat with some tang from the labneh, sweetness, freshness from the tomato, and texture from the pine nuts. Absolute home run on this one! The Awarma and Cheese was a close second, but personally, the flavor profile was just a little less interesting than the lamb.
