The food took quite a while to come out and when it finally arrived, it wasn't even hot. The bread honestly tasted like something bought from a grocery store. The rice was very bland, and although the salad was actually really good, the chicken was extremely dry, chewy, and lacked flavor. The presentation looked nice, but the taste just didn't match. The portions were also quite small, and the prices felt very high for what you get. The service was just okay overall. Maybe they are still new and working things out, but for the price and portion size it just didn't feel worth it. We were in the Wallingford area and searched on Yelp for a place to eat and opted for Almanqal. The restaurant itself is a bit old but doable. The décor is function over form, i.e. basic. There were two staff members at the front, both of whom also prep food, cook, or grill. She told us to order at the cash register, but others had their order taken at their table later. While they have tables to sit-down, service was limited. They were also busy with takeout orders during the peak dinner time of 6pm. It wasn't until the end of dinner rush that they walked around the tables to refill water. Understandable given their small family business. The food is pretty good, more at a neighborhood scale; I wouldn't categorize them as 'worth the drive'. Prices are reasonable for the food, not high, not a bargain, either. While the lamb kebab pieces are very tender and good, the salad consists of uninspiring iceberg lettuce with tiny bits of tomato and tiny shreds of onions. Minus a star for the salad part. Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars This dish is served with one appetizer. We chose baba ghanoush. The fact this dish comes with a full-size appetizer makes this much more worthwhile than the salad. The lamb pieces are tender, and the rice is flavorful. The baba ghanoush is also good. Thumbs up for the trio. The overall rating should be 3.5 stars. We ordered a few things to go and spent $53 on two dishes and I was shocked when I opened the box to find a very small portion of rice with little to no lamb. First off, Almanqal isn't a traditional restaurant with table service. You pick a table, grab a menu then order at the front. Only plastic cups for water and you also need to grab cutlery. Now that we've established it's very casual, you are ready to go. Their pita is very good, handmade,fresh and hot. My friend and I ordered the mezze platter and a sandwich each, which was too much food. We both took the sandwich to go. The hummus and baba ghanouj were total winners, as was the fried cauliflower. I was treated to lunch a few days ago as a return favor and we decided to go to Almanqal. We got there just after 1 and the place was empty. I ordered the lamb shawarma plate which also came with babaganosh and salad. He got a lamb shawarma sandwich. We also ordered a chicken shawarma plate for my wife to go. It was ready when we left. The small inside area was more functional than welcoming. Several people came in while we waited. Took a while to get our food but not so long as to be an issue. Lamb at Mediterranean restaurants often can be grisly. Tough. This was not but then it was not chunks of lamb but little slices of lamb which could lead to overcooking. And it did. The babaganosh (spelling?) was excellent. As good as any I've ever had. But the Greek salad was too vinegary for my taste. Couldn't finish it. I didn't love the lamb. Not terrible but not delicious enough to return for more. The chicken shawarma was so overcooked that it my wife said it was uneatable. Dry. Sadly we tossed it. You always want these small family restaurants to do well. They well could have a few dishes, besides the baba, that are good. I remember going to one Greek restaurant just for their calamari appetizer. And a drink. Maybe that's the case here. Regardless of the number of stars I rate a restaurant on Yelp, the real rating is whether I would return. Probably not. But if you're in the Wallingford area, don't avoid it on my account. read more
