This spot must be new because I have been in this plaza many times and never seen this bakery before. It had such a cute vibe. Reminded me of an 85 degrees, but much more intimate, trendy and cute. They had specials, like buy a coffee and get a bread for $1. They also ha a "Stranger Things" bread for Halloween. I love it! It made it way more fun and different. I am so mad I did not take a pic of the donuts, but they were good! They put crumbled oreos on top. They were still soft the following day. So happy to see a Sunmerry closer to north OC! I've been a fan of Sunmerry's pastries and drinks for a while now, but making the effort to go to Irvine or Rowland Heights was a bit out of the way. Lo and behold - Sunmerry in Brea! Located in the Target plaza, next to the Great Clips - it's a small storefront, but has a nice selection of pastries, mochi donuts and pretty much the full Happy Lemon drink menu, yay! They carry my favorite BBQ pork bolo bun and Oreo milk tea, yum. We also tried their mochi donuts (note: it was Sunday around 3pm so probably not the freshest batch) and ended up with black sesame, matcha and pumpkin spice. Maybe because they weren't fresh, but these were not light and chewy like other mochi donuts I've tried, and the glazes/frostings on top were quite thick and sweet. This rating is only regarding the mochi donuts. I saw reviews nearly praising how good these were but my experience fell short of that. I reallyyy wanted to like these and was hoping that these were on the same quality tier as Sunmerry Bakery's pastries. But I think because the donuts are made at this location (unlike the wrapped pastries), there is little quality control. The taste was lackluster, the icing was the best part of the donuts. But overall, I hate how oily they were. I didn't mind that they were not as chewy as other mochi donuts spots. But after eating one, it left such a bad aftertaste because of the grease. I bought four in total but after eating one, I really wasn't looking forward to trying another one/: pretty sad about these, if you want to try some mochi donuts please look elsewhere. I'm blown away by the customer service at this place. I feel like the workers always have such a great attitude so I feel welcome when I come here. Oh and I like how the workers personally hand you the drink instead of leaving it standing on a table. Idk just my personal preference lol it just feels more friendly. Also I wanted to mention that the owner really cares about customer satisfaction. He saw my previous review and made sure to address my concerns. I came back and tried the drinks again (a large roasted oolong milk tea and a regular mango slush) and this time it did taste better. I would highly recommend anyone to come here. Mochi donuts are great here - and you can order online and pick up in the morning to ensure they have the flavors that you want before you arrive. I ordered about 10 of them - flavors included matcha, Oreo, black sesame, Snickers bar, strawberry pearl and plain sugar. My favorites are the plain sugar and the black sesame but ALL were delicious and I would order them every week if Sunmerry was closer to home. The boba here is pretty good. I came here on a Friday afternoon for a boba and a quick snack. The boba was fresh and the milk tea was good. Not too sweet and I could taste the tea flavor. I've been here a second time now and times are weird because of COVID, but employees play it safe here! They have a table set up outside with menus and a payment system. Most items are definitely Asian style and some of their items, such as the boba egg tarts, are a bit gimmicky, but give a unique experience, particularly for the location! My husband got an iced strawberry green tea. He loved it. I didn't like how bitter it was, but I don't normally like green tea. We later got their choco bun pastry and snickerdoodle cookie. The bun and cookie (right amount of crispy and softness) were DELICIOUS. Definitely recommend. The baristas were friendly and helpful. Music is noticeable but not overwhelming in this tiny shop. I know I wrote a review not that long ago, but I just wanted to mention that if you order mochi donuts from here, you should probably check your bag because I ordered three mochi donuts this morning and when I went to go eat it hours later, there was only two. It's my own fault for not checking when I got them. Just an FYI. Regardless, I will probably still continue to come here because I really like their drinks. I didn't bother calling because it was hours later and I opted not to get a receipt. I will just be more careful and check my orders next time. Also, I noticed a less sweetened lavender matcha didn't really taste like lavender at all. Maybe they use lavender flavored sweetener?? Here's what I ordered: **Milk Tea w/ Whole Milk & Boba, less sweet: The tea flavor was disappointing and all I was able to taste was watered down milk. The boba was pretty average as well and it seemed like it was out for the whole day since it was soggy and a bit bloated. (1.5/5) **Matcha Latte w/ Non-Fat Milk & Shot of Espresso, less sweet: Most matcha lattes I've had bring the drink with two layers, but this was mixed already. The actual matcha flavor was really weak and the shot of espresso tasted a little burnt. I don't even think it was necessary to get it less sweet because it had ZERO sugar. This is one of the more disappointing matcha lattes I've had in a while, no doubt. So far I've been 3 times and tried the Vietnamese, Spanish and Hawaiian iced coffees and I've loved every one! The Custard tart is also good and so is the strawberry lycee iced tea with boba (according to hubby). Bakery-wise I'm a big fan of their coconut raisin bread, it's soft and fresh with the perfect balance of sweetness and coconut flavor. Online ordering is convenient as well.
