Good quick place to grab a meal. Went here after grocery shopping at 99 ranch which it is conveniently located next to. This is an order at the counter type of place which is just what I needed. We started with beef and onion buns. The flavor was good but the beef was hard/tasted overcooked because of the texture. The buns were also cold which I didn't really like. I wouldn't get this again. We also got the pork and chive dumplings which were really delicious. You can see the employees making the dumplings fresh from scratch by hand in the back and you can really taste how fresh these dumplings are. The texture was amazing. The skin wasn't too thick too. We got ours pan fried and loved how each dumpling had a crispy bottom. The restaurant was also clean and pleasant. Overall would definitely come to try more flavors of dumplings. read more

The Chive & Pork dumplings were filling and delicious. I really liked the wrapper texture and thickness. The Dan Dan noodles had a perfect balance of szechuan pepper flavor. I prefer mine not too strong and so if you are really looking for that true numbing flavor, this might not be spiced enough. Best pork hun and dumplings I could think of in the US and they're willing to try new things all the time. Only concern is the container they used for the take away. It's not safe to put steam hot buns in this materials. I honestly go here for just the pork buns (bao zi) - #1. My parents are huge fans of this place, and told me that the taste is very reminiscent of their childhood. They haven't been able to find the same taste in NY. I find the buns very tasty as well, and like to add a bit of sriracha to it. We don't come too often so it's pretty much a nice treat to grab. Today I managed to make it here as I was picking up some groceries at 99 ranch. I'm in my third trimester - full term for those who don't know. I see Sunny Dumpling House almost every week while shopping at 99 and I am so glad we finally made a plan to eat there. The beef and onion bun was juicy and the bao was so soft. Green onion pancake came pre ripped up and I loved that detail. It was a little greasy, but it was still delicious. The wontons were filled to the brim and had great texture. The xia long bao were also packed with filling and soup and had great flavor. Dan Dan noodles were spicy but not too spicy, they fit in well with everything else we ordered and reheated well the next day as leftovers. I've had Sunny Dumpling House bookmarked for a while, mostly because they sold frozen dumplings at a decent price, however I never came in. That is until recently. One thing to note is that they recently changed their menu, Many items are now made fresh in the restaurant and they have expanded the menu greatly. Anyone who says their items arrive frozen has not sat watched the dumplings being made. They do batch them, so not everyday the same dumpling is being made. I've watched this many times. You can see people who are lovingly folding the buns, The food, okay well I've been trying to get some new items, but I've definitely found my must haves. The pork bun is fantastic. Beware, it's not always served warm, so you may want to warm it if you are taking it to go. If you sit inside, they will warm it for you. My son is a picky eater and he loves these buns, it helps it's just pork and no visible veggies, so they are right up his alley. I've tried the pan fried pork dumplings as well as the pork and chive. Both are fantastic options. The green onion pancake is one of the best I've had, it is very crispy and flaky with lots of flavor. The wonton soup is great. My son and I ordered the large pork wonton and the small pork wonton version, both without the mini dried shrimp (sorry, not my thing). The broth was good, very basic but nice. The wontons were great. I was expecting the only difference to be the size, but they had different flavors in the pork filling and the wonton skin were also different. The small were more tender and yellowish an the large thicker and white. Both were good, just a matter of preference. I've also tried the Dandan noodle but this was probably the most underwhelming item. It definitely needed some kind of a sauce. I did appreciate it was not loaded with a bunch of fillers like cucumber. Today I tried the seasonal pork moon cake. Wow, I am blown away. The crust was more like a puff pastry that was super flaky and the meat was very flavorful. These are awesome. While they are not make fresh in store, they are made at one of their other 3 locations and brought down frozen. They are a must try item. All of the employees are very nice and welcoming. Ivy, who is usually at the counter is very sweet. This is definitely one of my new favorite spots. Absolutely disgusting. I bit into a vegetable bun from Sunny Dumpling House and found a large piece of hard black plastic inside the filling. Not stuck to the outside -- literally mixed in with the vegetables. This is a serious health hazard, and it's shocking that something like this made it past their kitchen. I could have choked or seriously hurt myself. I used to enjoy coming here, but after this experience, I will never eat here again -- and I strongly urge others to think twice. So when she said Sunny was great, I was game to go. It seriously exceeded any expectation! The restaurant is small and unassuming inside 99 Ranch. Do not let that dissuade you! This is a lovely family run business which takes great pride in their food. I personally loved the beef and chive pan fried dumplings. They are fantastic! The dough is super tender and light and the meat mixture has a great flavor. The soup dumplings were also great. We got the pork. I also got the beef and onion bun which was great! The last item I ordered was the scallion pancakes. Holy crap they are good!! The best scallion pancake I have ever had. So fresh, tender, light and fluffy! I was shocked! Overall, everything we got was great! The ladies working and taking orders have been great. Even if there is a language barrier sometimes, they are so sweet and through pointing and smiling, you can order anything. After the previous business had vacated this suite in the back of the 99 Ranch Market complex on Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Sunny Dumpling House took over the space and began running a similar operation. The biggest difference was the elimination of most of the dining room and converting it into an extension of the kitchen preparation area. You can now see workers knead and roll the dough used to make the products. As for the menu, there were fewer entree dishes and a great focus on buns (baozi) and homemade dumplings. Unfortunately, the latter was only sold in frozen quantities of 50. One would think you can get some freshly steamed wontons, but those too were only available in a frozen state. Why would a dumpling house not sell their namesake product in piping hot, smaller quantities? Nearly every other item can be bought and eaten on the spot. Ten different types of buns sold for $1.99 apiece. Two of the varieties I had wanted were unavailable, fennel & pork and mushroom & chicken. The three that I bought were beef & onion, napa & pork, and red bean. The outside of the dough was chewy while the inside was not particularly hot. Based on my experience and feedback from others, I have a hard time believing that Sunny Dumpling House is a five star establishment because there are several areas of needed improvement. read more

Can only eat the bun & soup at the restaurant. The rest of the menu items are frozen so you have to cook it at home. The chive, egg, shrimp, pork dumplings was good. Had a bit too much chive for my taste but it was good. The napa and beef dumpling are also good. Overall it's 10x better than the frozen dumplings you get at Ranch99 or HMart. We got the fresh dumplings the one that weren't frozen and they were just ok. (Egg and chive)It needed the chili oil and soy sauce dipping sauce and so when we got home we had a couple of them with that added and they did taste better. We also bought a pack of the frozen shrimp and pork dumplings and you cook them yourself at home. These were much better and if course we had the chili oil soy sauce vinegar mixture that some palaces offer and it really adds the much needed flavor to them. But with out that dipping sauce the frozen ones did taste better. I'd say this place was more like 3.5 stars but I did round it up to 4 just because either do make the dumplings fresh in store and the value for handmade dumplings is pretty good.
