This sweet restaurant is such a hidden gem in downtown Escondido! They've been here about 8 years and I'm so happy to have discovered this spot! It's cozy with a handful of tables inside. If you're dining in at one of the little tables indoors or along the side walk you'll scan the code on the table and place your order and pay right inside an app like system. Drinks and all: This sends your order to the kitchen and is coded to your specific table: I'm guessing they developed this touchless method in the last few years and for us tech savvy folks it was a breeze. There is the ability to do so many modifications for menu items and that had me scrolling a bit but I prefer the option to make specific adjustments vs adding that kind of things into notes. If pressing buttons and scanning all the things has you bummed out, you can also saunter up to the counter and place your order. If you're ordering to go and there is a line, there is a barcode on the sandwich board on the sidewalk that you can order with and not wait in said line for counter orders. So many ways to get delicious food! And before speaking of that in a second, I'll note beforehand that you can get gluten free and other allergy requests easily accommodated here. Delicious it is indeed. Now: Sunny Side has gotten some major love from Yelpers over the years and has been named on top Yelp lists multiple times: Many of the votes were focused on the breakfast sammy and so, of course, had to order it. I've been here twice, both times for Yelp events. This time, I finally got to take my family here. My husband and I got the usual breakfast sandwiches and the spicy chicken sandwich and I will tell you that it's worth the stop. The watermelon lemonade was homemade and absolutely delicious. My kids got the regular lemonade and they loved that too. Everyone there is very kind and helpful and it feels good to know that you're supporting a small business when you come here. The oatmeal was somehow both "hot and fresh" and watery and cold at the same time. Don't get me wrong- it wasn't the worst breakfast I've ever had. It was average, middle of the road, actually honest food. But it's in no way the shining near-perfect food experience that Yelp leads you to believe. Their best seller is The Works Breakfast Sandwich, which my boyfriend ordered. I ordered the California Club. All their Breakfast sandwiches come with a tiny side of fruit. We called ahead by about 20 minutes, and the expected wait time was 20 minutes. By the time we got there, we had to wait another extra 10 minutes for the food and for the complimentary Yelp Check In Lemonade. The food completely exceed our expectations. I really loved the extra spices and cheese on top of the panini, and the soft lovely texture of the avocado. I also really enjoyed the lemonade. So happy I found the gem on our way up to Harrah's from downtown. Stopped in with my fam (4 of us), parked across the street and walked in (very un-assuming from the outside). We were a little worried about seating, but there was some tables inside (like 4-5) and some out front, but also a bunch in the back which was a bit shaded, even on a hot August morning. Not a cheap place to eat since a 1/2 sandwich is $7 and change. Small uncomfortable seating inside but they have outside seating that the sun will hit even with umbrellas at the time we were there. Went there for breakfast to try it out since they had so many great Yelps. After putting our order in, waited 25 minutes before walking up and asking how much longer it might be. And was basically told sir, they're baked with a some attitude to her voice. Picked up on this while we waited because people coming in to get their pre-called in to go orders were waiting 15 minutes or so to get their order to go. They have tall glass water bottles so you can poor your own waters. The bottle we happened to grab after opening it, had a crumb on the inside at the top of the bottle and inside of the white cap was a little blackish dirty so that was a turn off. After 30 minutes it finally was served to us. Everything is baked including the egg (which it states on the menu). Since not scrambled, you have an egg white sandwich with a little yolk flavored spot. I ordered the award winning The Works. To me, one word, bland. Had there been no avocado, it would have been completely dry. My wife got the egg & bacon. Baked bread, baked egg & baked bacon. It was baked hard as a rock and no flavor other than the butter grilled into the hard bread. The side of fruit is tiny, it's a little ketchup plastic to go condiment container. We tried "The Works" panini and it was amazing. I also ordered an iced Hazelnut Latte and my sister got the Fall (apple floral) tea and both were made fresh and tasted delicious. I loved that they offer an array of dipping sauces including pesto sauce and a tomato aioli, ranch (etc).
