Known for their delicious pies in Wahiawa. If hubs didn't get a custard pie yesterday elsewhere I'd definitely take home their chocolate pie today. If you like fast simple comforting food you might like what they offer here. We both had the fried rice special which comes with an egg prepared to your choice of style and a hot dog split in half lengthwise, no substitutions. If I could get two strips of crispy bacon or Portuguese sausage instead I'd rate them 5 stars. The rice reminded me of how my mom's fried rice tasted and a little bit like Likelike from yesteryear. You order at the counter then wait at your table. They don't give you a number on a stand but deliver it to you in a jiffy. As we were leaving I saw a slew of items that you could order like baked spaghetti and more. Also at the outside window there is a menu of other items along with their pies. When I went up to get a piece of foil to cover my left overs I saw this guy with cooked scrambled eggs in a silver container in bulk scooping it into someone's order. I had an eye appointment in Wahiawa, so decided to drop in at this locals favorite spot. The order: Son son: Waffle which came out hot and crunchy on the outside and soft interior Daddy's order: Teri Steak Plate Lunch with Mac Salad and sauce all over the rice. The Teri steak had that great sweet umami blast. Some prices were tender and soft, but there were a few chewy pieces mixed in. There is a small seating area and you order at the counter. There's no real sit down service and food is served on paper plates, but the quality for the price is what you come for. The fried rice special comes with one egg and hot dog and was pretty good, not amazing though. I was however, super impressed with the pancakes. Genuinely, I think it was the best pancakes I've ever had in my life! The batter is so tasty. They're so light and fluffy yet the edges have a little crisp to it. Update 8-8-25. Didn't know what to eat so I remembered when I review themway back then I said let's eat pancakes . My husband said let's go. So I did order their pancake and a bacon and egg sandwich. They ask how I wanted the egg I said easy over boy that was a mistake yolk gushing out of the sandwich dripping too. Lots of bacon but only thing the bread was crumbly not too fresh and not to soft. When I was biting into the sandwich everything was falling out. Oh well... Now for the pancake it was good light and fluffy not heavy. The kind of pancake I like. Will go back and order it again. First time trying Sunny side, to begin I walked in because our family wanted to dine in, there was only 2 people inside eating and grateful they weren't crowded, I stood at the register for a few minutes and wasn't greeted and no one made eye contact with me and about 5 workers walked passed me, I didn't know if I could just seat myself, only one guy approached and asked what I wanted to order, asked if we can dine in for a party of 6, without saying yes or no I was told "you order here and you choose your table" I said okay and just sat myself. The place was small, they offer take out from the window outside and they did have a table outside, the decor was cool and is air conditioned. While ordering, my dad got an Eggs Benedict and he was asked how he wanted the egg?? Totally confused cause typically an Eggs Benedict has a poached egg, but my dad didn't know what it was called and he told the gyal that they could make how they usually would, she responded "so how would you like the egg?" He just ordered it as over easy, after paying she said that the drinks/condiments/utensils were self serve, which I didn't mind. When our food was brought to the table, the food looked mid but the Eggs Benedict was terrible, the plate was messy and the hollandaise sauce was not correct, it tasted too sour and just looked sad honestly, we ordered a loco moco, the patty was small and it was mostly rice, but the prices were good however not worth it if this is there quality of food, during our experience my little brother asked the server if he could have ketchup and instead of telling him that it was at the front to grab, he was ignored and she walked away. Our family were told that they had very good pies and my grandma had ordered the blueberry/chocolate/apple and honestly they were okay nothing exciting, when we finished eating I assumed we also had to clean up after ourselves as well so I trashed our paper plates and the utensils weren't disposable so I thought to leave the utensils on the table but when I got to the trash there was a bucket to put the utensils in, I didn't know how to feel about it but it was laughing moment. First time here for lunch. Cashier and all the staff greeted us and was very friendly. She gave us the rundown and recommendations of the menu. I met the owner Lucy and daughter Laura. They gave us a brief history of the restaurant. We had fun and laughter with a little magic entertainment. It had a nice comfortable and relaxing ambiance. Parking was easy right in front. We had the Pork Chop and Hamburger Steak plate. Both were outstanding and flavorful. They really smothered the onions over the pork chop, so good! Portions were good size with leftovers for another meal. And of course, we couldn't leave without ordering chocolate pudding pie. That topped it off, so delicious! Gee, I was so wanting to try Shige's Saimin in Wahiawa that I convinced Jamie W. to take a 90-minute ride on a public bus to get there from Waikiki. I had recalled from a local vlogger that this was the place to get some homemade pie. Well, it sounded like a good way to kill time. It took us about fifteen minutes to walk over to this modest breakfast cafe. Indeed they had five different pies on display, and slices were sold at $5 a piece. Came here as a spur of the moment thing after dropping our dog off to the Oahu SPCA. Wasn't expecting much until we seen that it was a little building on its own. I thought it was just another hole in the wall. But This place has its own location and parking... & I must say, if I lived closer this would be my go to place! This family run restaurant is located in Wahiawā and it was clean and people are very friendly. It is like going to eat at your uncle or auntie house and they cooked food for you. So it was not fancy and you get what you ordered. This was our first time here and after we ordered, we noticed people are coming here for hotdog fried rice. So I plan to try that next time. Love the convenience of this spot. Locals at Wahiawa hospital recommended Sunnyside for a quick bite. There were so many yummy things to choise from but I picked the liver &onions because... its not usually a choice anywhere else. The liver was Not overcooked so not fry and tough. The onions were sautéed and sweet. They topped it all off with a giant slice of bacon! Service was friendly and fast - at least at the outside counter. You can also eat as a sit down if you want. Sunny Side is an iconic restaurant, serving the Wahiawa community since 1977. It offers comfort food and freshly baked pies, especially their popular chocolate cream and peach-pear pies. Owners were the Niino and Shimonishi families that made this old school restaurant where the community congregated for breakfast each morning. Here it becomes interesting. With the lease coming up for renewal, the owners closed the restaurant on 3/31/18 and decided to sell this business, together with its recipes, to its employees, Britania Fajardo and Evangeline Yuen. On 10/5/19, the employees opened up their own restaurant around the corner on California Ave., using the same recipes, under the name of Tanya's Pies and Grill. The Niino and Shimonishi families had a change in heart and decided to reopen Sunny Side in the same location in July 2020, much to the surprise of everyone. Using their same recipes, here you have two different restaurants within a block away, serving the same menu items and freshly baked pies and using the same recipes. I guess this is good for competition, as well as having a sufficient inventory for customers, i.e., if one restaurant runs out, go to the other one for the same thing. While I haven't been to Tanya's, I would imagine either restaurant tweaking the recipes to make it their own; however, the recipes, as is, are what made Sunny Side a part of the Wahiawa community. This review is for Sunny Side, as I have eaten their menu items and their pies (I have yet to visit Tanya's). Sunny Side excels in its breakfast menu, serving loco moco, pancakes, French toast, waffles, eggs Benedict, eggs with breakfast meats, and its popular fried rice special with one egg and hot dog. They also serve lunch items that include sandwiches (burgers, BLT, bacon/egg, mahi, teri beef) and plate lunches (chicken cutlet, liver and onions, fried noodles, teri chicken, pork chops, hamburger steak, teri steak, tonkatsu, mahi, fried shrimp). And you can't leave until you've tried their pies (apple, pear-peach, choc cream, blueberry cream, apple, banana, choc haupia). Over the years when I was working in town, co-workers who had to do site visits in Wahiawa would always return to the office with Sunny Side pies to share with the office. It was a given that whoever went to Wahiawa, would always return with a pie, which we all devoured in no time! We've tried the following: * Fried rice. Excellent and tasty, non-oily fried rice with bits of bacon, spam, and green onions (optional). A winner in my books! Go early to get this, as our most recent visit there about one hour before closing, they ran out of their fried rice. * Corned beef hash with egg. Great proportion of corned beef to the potatoes and minced round onions! Generous, thick portion that was excellent in taste! Optional gravy over hash, and surprisingly good! * BBQ hamburger. Thick homemade burger that was soft and flavorful with a teri sauce. * Pear-peach pie. Although canned pears and peaches are used, this pie is excellent in taste, not overly sweet, and holds up well. Double crusted, so very buttery and flaky crust when warmed up in a toaster oven. * Chocolate cream pie. For chocolate lovers, so very creamy, not overly sweet, and flavorful with a buttery and flakey crust! Counter staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. They are willing to accommodate any special requests. Go early to get their lunch specials and popular breakfast items, such as their fried rice, as they do sell out. The restaurant interior is clean and well kept. Diners are respectful in cleaning up their tables after their meal. Nice, cozy and comfortable interior that seats about 30, with regulars oftentimes knowing each other in the community. Prices are kept reasonable by minimum serving and bussing of tables. For dine-in, you order at the counter, then wait for your order after getting your table. Water in paper cups, utensils, napkins, and condiments are self-service. As your food orders are served on paper plates, you buss your own tables by disposing your own plates. Hours of operation are from Tues to Sat, 6a to 2p, Sun closed. Free parking available fronting the restaurant in its own private lot. Located next to Fred Wright Park and across from the district courthouse. Glad that Sunny Side found its way back into the Wahiawa community, as they have established themselves there for the past 77 years! Always a great stopover for brunch or for a pie when in Wahiawa!
