What an awful experience. I only got as far as a long conversation with their great salesperson about battery backup, then based on that, I signed a contract for a lot of money; and then I was given the contact info of the "project coordinator" (who didn't coordinate anything). The rest was just a bunch of frighteningly disjointed and demeaning miscommunications. Luckily I got scared and asked for them to tear up my contract, which they did, before I actually parted with any money. Whew! For example, I kept receiving emailed surveys asking how things are going... often addressed to the wrong person... and always asking questions I couldn't answer. I jumped in at one point and wrote the following in the survey's "additional information" field: "When is the part of the process where I tell you exactly what I want? I did discuss this with the salesman. BUT since my 'project coordinator' PC apparently knows nothing of that conversation -- and doesn't want to know -- I assume none of that got written down, and thus I will have to start over with someone else... but who? "The PC told me I'd be discussing my specific solar needs with the site survey people. BUT the nameless lone guy who finally came and did my "site survey" didn't know or want any info or questions from me either. He just took some photos and left. "Especially since my house and project are somewhat non-standard, surely Sunpower needs to have a conversation with me, right? You can't be lame enough to get the design team to create a plan that is based on something OTHER than WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTS, and then when you finally present it to the customer and they reject it, at that point the design team has to start from scratch?" It wouldn't surprise me a bit if that actually WAS their plan! (BTW I got a reply to this telling me that this survey had been meant for customers who already had reached the installation phase, so there was nowhere they could send my survey responses. HUH??) I'm SO glad to be rid of SunPower. Oh another thing: carefully read the positive reviews (eg here at Yelp and at BestCompanies.com) and then read the negative ones. It made the hair stand up on my neck... I'm pretty sure nearly all the positive ones are FAKE. read more

He stated in his email that they would not send the technician back to fix the damage he created until I hire a roofer to fix the leak. Let me preface this rating with the fact that I am in a current case with the better business bureau due to Sun Power's negligence and general ineptitude with customer service. In September of 2022 I reported an issue with my system. It was just fixed in April 2023. While I'm grateful the system is operating again, it took over half a year. I wish this was due to supply chain, but sadly it wasn't. It took 3 visits to the house. Once in October to diagnose the issue (after a spent 90 minutes on the phone with customer service diagnosing the issue in September), once in November to replace the receivers/computer, and once in APRIL to make the receiver functional. During this time their 3rd party service team last minute cancelled at least 3 times, causing a total of no less than 6 days of missed work. As a request I asked for a few months of lease abatement to account for a fraction of lost income, which they refused to for legal obligations as of today. This company is just short of being crooks. They aren't stealing, but they clearly don't care about their customers, their service, or their reputation. Find a more trustworthy company, and prevent the headache and hassle of dealing with this incompetent company. read more

This is an update to my previous review. After escalating the the issue through the regional Sunpower team, my project has been removed from the downgrade (425W to 350W panels)--my project plan is now updated to use the 435W panels which will remove the need to go through another round of HOA approvals. With the project already at 2 months in and just entering the city permitting process, it would have improved the experience if the project team involved had automatically upgraded me to the available 435W panels instead of flagging my project for a panel downgrade. Will update more once the project gets to the installation phase. read more

I signed a contract with Sunpower in July 2022 to get a new roof and to have solar panels installed. The roof was done in December but they did not include a small 7x11 flat section of the roof. I paid over $21,000 for the full roof and that part of the roof was over 30 years old. The solar panels themselves did not work until March 10, 2023 ---but that is not even the reason that I am contemplating legal action against them. The new roof leaked heavily during the winter rains of February and March and did major damage to my dining room---mold, water damage, dry wall that had to be removed. Sunpower sent an electrician over twice to look at the area and photograph it, but would not do any repairs. They are liable for the roof damage since I paid them for a new roof. I am initiating legal action against them for this reason. read more

Filed a report in September of 2023, called customer service multiple times only to be placated that "they are on it" " waiting for a part". No one has been out to look at what is wrong. I have had my Sunpower panels for 5 years. Paid in full, no finding. Great dedication while everything working smoothly. On June 16th I called to tell them they're was a problem as I was notified on the App. They told me promptly what the problem was, told me how to correct it which didn't work. They then told me they would order new parts and have their contractor repair. One month later I called to tell them no contractor or Sunpwer rep had contacted me. 6 calls later, still no contractor call. No updates from Sunpower. When I call they tell me someone will contact me, but it is now August 30 and still no call back or email confirmation. I'm beginning to think this is a sham company. 0 stars. read more

I wrote a very negative review of Sunpower back in April since they promised me a "new roof" for $21,000 and then a few months after the "new roof" was installed it rained heavily and my dining room was flooded, the foundation was damaged, black mold grew on the walls and the whole room had to be separated off to block mold spores. I wrote to them about this many times, called the project manager, and reported this to the State of California Licensing Board. I had chosen Sunpower since they were working with the Sierra Club--- a great organization that I have been a member of for over two decades. I have now also written to the Sierra Club advising them to cut their ties with Sunpower. (They also never delivered a $1000 rebate for signing up with them or a promised donation to the Sierra Club). Over the past five months, I have not received any real response from them, and I have had to go ahead with repairs with no help from the company that should have assumed responsibility for the damage. I do not recommend this company and will continue to document this case to the State of California Licensing Board. I warn others NOT to work with the either. read more

UPDATE 6/28/20: while the representative was quick from sunpower to respond to the yelp thread that all it was, a public show of concern for which this company has none. i responded to the lady and have herd ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING!!! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. what ever you do DON'T BUY these panels biggest mistake i ever did. I have sunpower panels that had a micro inverter failure as a result of a manufacturer material failure. Sunpower did not notify customers of this known problem. My panels were underproducing and not meeting the intended power production as guaranteed by the warranty. And now Sunpower will not compensate me for the time my panels were not producing as promised. I will start my review with DO NOT use SunPower for you solar needs. I really do not know where to start our experience has been so BAD!. We started in January and first crew showed up without a call or appointment in March. It is now July and the solar still does not work. A little background since we do not have enough space for me to explain how awful this experience has been. I have existing 7 panels. They were to add 7 more for a total of 14 panels. Instead of adding to the existing system. They did a complete new install on the new 7 and ran so much pipe on my roof it looked like PGE power house and installed panels on wrong roof after they verified with me the correct roof and had me look at the drawings. What home owner would want two separate systems ....that is crazy. *made them take off all that pipe *made them move panels to correct roof *made them fix the roof that they damaged and repair holes they drilled *made them remove the second monitor box in garage. The original one has not worked since March. Still waiting SunPower... *made them fix breaker that they messed up bad. put 40 amps on 30 amp breaker. Killed my AC when it was over 100 in Morgan Hill with two dogs in house. I got home from work and inside of my house was in the 90 and my dogs were lethargic. Everything SUNPOWER has touched they broke and had to come back multiple times and still not working. They have been to my house about 15 times. Each time no call, appointment, text or email. They just show up. At this time July 5 2022: I have no solar, lost lots of time from work, have gotten emails from PGE that SunPower continues to send them incorrect paperwork and have not received a single phone call from SUNPOWER. The Project Manager is the worse I have ever experienced. We have never met her, talked to her or had any communication with her other that emails that she sends after the fact. I can email her but it takes a week to get a response. I just received email that we are getting a new PM. Can't be worse! We have a new sales rep and he has not called, emailed or text to say Hello, sorry or this is me...NOTHING. The newest drama is an email to me today from PGE telling me that SUNPOWER messed up the paperwork multiple times. PGE is look to me, the customer, to help because SUNPOWER is that bad. This is sad! SUNPOWER is the most expensive. 7 panels cost me $12K. My $12 thousand dollars as gotten me headaches, sleepless nights, almost killed my dogs, tortured, rude emails, disrespected, no new energy savings, lost the existing savings I was getting, lost of time at work and a stress level that is off the charts. We got a 3.85 kW 11-panel SunPower solar system on our new construction home. Originally there was one panel missing but Sun Power came back after our home closing to install that 1 panel. They didn't proactively inform us as the buyer or the builder's sales rep about this missing panel - we saw it missing when our inspector took pics of the roof. It was then a bit difficult to email/call to figure out what was the plan with the last panel, so better communication there would've been nice. About a month after closing and getting permission to operate, Warren Grennan from Sun Power came to do our activation. He saw that our solar wasn't powered on, and when it did go on, he saw that one panel was not connected. He was able to quickly resolve the issues on the spot and his guys went up onto the roof to connect the final panel. At 10:30a we're getting about 3.1kW, and Warren informed us that we should get about 3.5 kW around peak hours. He helped us to set up the app on our phone and taught us how to use it. Warren was on time, prompt, gave accurate estimates for how long the activation would take, kept us informed of any issues right away, and gave us tips for when to best use our electricity to keep costs down. Warren was also very funny, charming, and intelligent. We are very excited to start using our solar! read more

We love our solar system - I wish we had found SunPower 2 years ago, when we first started researching solar panels. We interviewed several solar companies and decided to go with Freedom Solar Power Based on their high-quality - most advanced solar technology. The whole experience was fabulous and the outcome absolutely perfect. Everybody involved did their best until the job was completed. James the Solar Guy gave an excellent presentation and kept in touch with us, answering every question we had with thorough responses , the customer service team did an excellent job updating us on every step of the installation and the installation crew did an outstanding job that was confirmed by an independent solar installer we hired to verify the quality of the workmanship. One of the nice perks is the Monitoring app that shows the produced - and used Energy from the panels. In our case, our app did not consistently connect to the monitoring system. Thanks to Tommi, the assistant reg. operations manager and her team, their excellent communication and dedication to great customer service, they found the problem and fixed it. And last but not least, we did receive our sign-on bonus check after about 8 weeks. In summary, working with Freedom Solar was a really great experience -we love the look of our panels, feel assured of their superb quality and performance that we can monitor via our app, and are happy to make an environmentally conscious choice that also will save us money on our electric bills. read more

Just had SunPower panels installed, and really impressed with the product and service -- especially throughout this whole COVID thing. I shopped around a few solar companies, but what stood out for me about SunPower: - 370W panels, which means I can generate more way more power with the same amount of roof space. Plus they look cooler as well (dark matte gray). Other quotes I got had panels in all kinds of crazy places on the roof to try and squeeze out power. With Sunpower, I just have one set across one part of the roof. - Manufacturers guarantee. I bought the panels and liked the soup to nuts 25-year guarantee. The thing to remember with panels is if one fails and you don't have a good guarantee it will wipe out your ROI -. When I compared warranties, SunPower's was a lot more comprehensive. - Installation. A really good crew -- ran conduit in a very discrete way, and even painted it the color of the house so it blended in. I was pretty disappointed in how I was treated. I asked for an initial consultation, and was assigned to Ashlee Martin. AM made a virtual appointment, and she proceeded to not showing up. She rescheduled, and did not show up for a second time. I called Sunpower and they told me my home did not qualify: too many trees. Still, totally unprofessional not showing up to the schedule appointment and explaining to me why I did not qualify. I also had so many questions left unanswered: which trees where the issue? What about removing trees? What about considering the detached garage as an alternative. Nope. They just decided I was not worth being treated like you would any person. read more

If I could give a -5 to the review I would but have to settle for a 1 and that's not even true. I have never been more frustrated with a company in my life. Sunpower is the manufacturer of the panels on my roof but South Coast Solar, Columbia, SC, is the installer. Panels were installed in Feb 2017 with a 10 year warranty. In Dec 2023, I noticed that the inverter was not working properly. There was a warning light lit and I called South Coast Solar to find out the problem. I was told that they were going to call SunPower and have them troubleshoot and monitor the system. Several weeks went by and I received NO information from South Coast or SunPower. So I call again, and again and email and email. Several more weeks go by and nothing. I am told that SunPower needs to monitor the system AGAIN for another 24 hours. More time passes...now I am not getting anyone on the phone because they know that I am pissed. Each company says it's the others problem. After repeated calls, South Coast did come out and get on my roof and spoke to technicians while here. Again, time passes and no one is taking responsibility. I also understand that South Coast doesn't use panels from SunPower anymore. I have spent about 4 hours on the phone with just SunPower and the story is different every time I speak to someone. It is now almost April 2024 and not a thing has been done to remedy this situation. I have non working pieces of garbage on my roof and since I have no lease on them because I paid cash, that they are just hoping that I go away. This won't be the case. read more

I did not get past the sales call. I requested a quote on line and received a email with a list of questions. I replied and schedule an on line session. I received email reply it was confirmed and expect to receive a link prior to the meeting that may take up to 45 minutes. So far so good as this was similar to other companies, which are very patient and answer questions I never received the "link" and no call at the confirmed time. I finally found their local number and was told some one will get in touch with me later. Strike one. An hour later I received a call from a sales rep, but I was busy so he said I can call him at his number later. When I did no one pickup up ( which is fine) but I got routed to a recording that the voice message box is full and I cannot leave a message. So can't even tell home to call me back. Strike two. I tried a few other things and finally got a call from him. I described my needs (solar and battery ) . He said right away "you don't want battery, you are better off with a back up generator "! While they are pros and cons with battery, it's strange for someone working for a solar company to suggest putting yet another fossil fuel burning device. Already strike three. He just quickly quoted me a size and price, then asked if I have anymore questions- whatever hurry has was in. Theres more. later I received a text from him that was screen shots from some in house customer discussion. when questioned he simply replied "wrong text" read more

Update - third issue with our solar system in the 2 years we have owned it. Issue #1 in 2020 took a month to resolve - it was a breaker that flipped and we were if it happens again to let them know. Issue #2 in 2021 also took a month to resolve - our panels were running at half capacity for over 6 months. Was told to "just flip the breaker back" when it happens again. Issue #3 in 2022, our system has been down since June 1 (almost 6 weeks). Been given the runaround as to why they cannot service us (first, their system is being upgraded, so they can't schedule appointments, then they said they are booked). Now I'm being told that I need to pre-pay for service to get someone onsite even though they advertise that their system is under warranty for 25 years. Avoid Sunpower like the plague. They are slow to respond, give you the runaround, and then ask you to pay up front for warranty work. read more

I decided to go with another company and informed Sunpower's contracting company Homesmart. Reason is Sunpower rating is not as good and Marty the people we had Zoom was kind of rude. When I question on certain things, he rushed off the call before I even had the chance to talk about the battery backup option. I had to email later to get the info. After I decided to install the solar panel with another company, I inform Marty and ask about the battery option as it's a separate project. He just said too bad you chose a LESSER company and he could not help me on the battery anymore. I recently contacted sunpower to find out if a particular solar tech repair company was licensed to work on my solar as I did not want to void my warranty. I had my solar account updated through sunpower and was able to get logged in to see my solar energy production through the App, mySunpower. I had thought my panels weren't working, but can now see that they are. Cath Malaluan was very helpful in getting the account updated in my name and walking me through the App. She also sent me the warranty and transfer form I needed to have the warranty transferred to my name. Just paid anohter $330 for the Solar panals that came with the house that dont work, so writing another review to save at least one homeowner the misery I go through each month. I did start my claim with the California State License Board and they shared Sunpower has many complaints so the more I learn about this company the more I have to help others stay away. * The panals do not produce as much power as I pay for them * They damaged my roof which was exposed in the rain this year, but only cover damages for one year so not helping with any repairs. * Sold the lease contract to the older man living there before me, and I had to accept the contract to buy the house. read more

Sunpower Customer service repair department is horrible, they sent me an email that half my panels are not working and they would need a site visit and they will contact me in 3 to 5 days, that was March 8th, it's now March 20th and no follow up no call no email, I had to make another call and now still waiting. Buyer Beware!!!! If I could give ZERO stars that would be my rating. Buying solar panels from Sun Power has been the biggest regret of our home ownership lives. Do not, I repeat, do not buy solar panels from them. The installation of their solar panels caused our roof to leak in several places. They refuse to cover the cost of repair, even though they are contractually obligated to. Our panels were installed and activated in Nov 2022. In Aug 2023 we started experiencing leaks in our ceiling directly under the location of the majority of the panels. Customer Service at Sun Power told us we would have to take this up with their sub contractor, Smart Solar, who they had used for the installation. I spent months (Aug - Oct) trying to get a hold of Smart Solar. It was not until mid November, that Smart Solar scheduled a team to come and check out our roof in early December. A Smart Solar team came out in early Dec. They concluded the sky light had to be the source of the leaks. Regardless of how improbable it seemed that our skylight, located far north west of the leaks, was the source, I accepted their conclusion and asked if they had any roofer recommendations. They sent me a list of roofers. I called the roofer they most highly recommended. He visited our home, took one look at the panels and the location of the leaks and said: there's very little chance these leaks are from the skylight, they are most definitely from the panels above them. I went back to Smart Solar with this information, but they refused to accept it. This is now January 2024. I continuously nagged both Sun Power and Smart Solar, and Smart Solar eventually sent out another roofer (in February). He ALSO concluded there was no evidence that the leaks were coming from the skylight. He said that the type of roof we had (shingles), combined with the low pitch of that part of our roof, was not favorable conditions for the type of panel installation that was done. He concluded our roof should not have been approved for that type of instal, and that the panels were the cause of the leaks. He also said that while our roof is older, it would have had another 3-4 years without issues if not for the panels. I have these statements on video, and thank goodness I do, because Smart Solar flat out lied about his findings (AND our first roofer's findings) when they sent a report to Sun Power. This was early March 2024. I was exhausted and distressed with the lack of attention to our case. I was exhausted and distressed every time it rained, not knowing where the next leak would appear. I was exhausted, distressed, and inconvenienced by all of our belongings we store in our garage being covered in tarps for months. We needed our home put back together. So, on top of all the time this had sucked out of me in this nearly one year ordeal, as well as having to go out of pocket for multiple tarps and buckets, we have now gone out of pocket 6k to pay, of all people, Smart Solar, to come remove and reinstall the panels, so we could repair our roof (which costs an additional 10.5k). And now we have to hire a contractor to fix our ceiling. Our next step is to get that estimate and make sure there is no mold etc, as the past eight months with a compromised roof have been very rainy, so we expect the damages to be extensive. They f*cked up our roof, are evading all responsibility, and are forcing us to fix it ourselves. They have not even bothered to send anyone to our home to just visually see how ridiculous it is to claim that (1) it was our skylight that caused the leaks versus the panel installation, or that (2) the condition of our roof was/is so poor it failed on its own. If they are so sure of these conclusions, prove it? They can't. They haven't even bothered to. If our roof was in such bad condition, why did they approve it for panels?....the accountability for our leaks still lies with them. Well Sun Power, I have receipts (and they are still coming in), I have pictures, I have videos, and I have statements from certified roofers. You did really well at exhausting me with the frustration of your inaction, but I'm not going away, I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and my next step is hiring a lawyer to pick this up with you.
