Whenever our extended family returns to visit from New Orleans, Sunrise Cafe is the first place they want to go! Today was a perfect example of great food and service. Della (not Stella ) greeted our sleepy pre-teen and the adults with her usual cheerful self and insured that our visit would be like sitting at mom's table. Even when I noticed that there was a computer malfunction, she merely took it in stride and made sure our meals were delivered promptly and hot. We had the steak and eggs (steak was seasoned excellently) and the meat lovers omelette. The omelette was stuffed full of meat and cheese, was fluffy and had that amazing diner flavor you only get from small joints. The staff was really friendly and the service was quick. I've noticed this place for a while but haven't stopped in until now. Service was quick and the staff is pleasant. I had the chicken and waffles which was made with real chicken breast and had a tasty crunchy coating. My mom had the burrito and my grandfather had the shrimp omelet (one of the specials). The first couple times I came here, I had an enjoyable experience. I would've given these guys 4 stars. The food was pretty good. Loved my biscuits and gravy, staff was friendly and coffee was hot! The interior and exterior is a bit outdated but nothing that would make me give them a low review back then... Though I've been there several times since, and I can only say it's been going downhill. I want to love this restaurant still, but service is starting to lack greatly. I never get refills on my coffee and when I do it's room temperature which is fine for some people, but I like my coffee at least warm, but preferred hot. The food now is okay, nothing to brag about. Bland, but at least cooked. There are a lot of places you could put your money to that will give you better food, and service. I might give them a try once more...one day and then, I may give a better review. :( read more

Breakfast here is great. Portion size is good deal for your money and they have fresh squeezed OJ! A small bar means you can get some of your favorites as well. Place is clean and service is good. Everyone is friendly and glad to help you out. I have driven by this place several times and glad I finally made it in! Don't forget to check the board or ask for daily specials. Second time going to this restaurant, and the second time they completely forgot about us. The first time, we didn't even get to place a drink order for 20 minutes, until we flagged down a waiter who seemed completely unapologetic. I called the manager later that day and she offered a free cup of coffee on our next visit since they forgot about bringing the coffee until we had our meal (and still charged us for it!)... so we tried it a second time and this time we had to wait 30 minutes to get our check - the waitress had placed it under a dish on our table apparently, but we had no idea. Once again the waitress (a different one) seemed completely unapologetic... we won't be returning to Sunrise Cafe until they figure some things out... Horrible service - food was alright read more

Just finished breakfast! Service is great the coffee good and the shredded hash browns are one in a million! Super crispy and plentiful. Eggs and sausage were good as well. I am a BIG breakfast fan and Sunrise is my favorite in the 757. Fresh and tasty ingredients in the Greek and veggie omelettes every time. Thick, chewy slabs of whole wheat toast. Service is fast and friendly even on very busy weekends and you never have to ask for a refill. I was very unhappy with the service. Our waitress was unfriendly and didn't really seem interested in helping us. After she dropped off the food (which we waited awhile for) we never saw her again. I had cold coffee that never got refilled and we could have used more napkins. It wasn't like they were very busy. Three of the wait staff were standing around talking by the bar. Here is the short review: Skip it and go elsewhere. Do not be fooled by the full parking lot of this place - it must be the tourists that don't know any better. There were 4 of us, and all had something different - so there should have been something good but really - the coffee was even watery and flavorless. I mentioned it to the server and she uncaringly responded with 'we grind our own and make if fresh" (maybe they shouldn't). I'm not sure how you make eggs bland and with no flavor unless they are just buying super cheap eggs, but they managed it. Much of the food was cold. We will never return. read more

My husband and I have a habit of going out to breakfast on the weekends. After we moved, we needed to find a new place so it seems we've settled on Sunrise. Nice little diner, can keep up with the news on the TVs they have, nice ambiance, just realized today that the bathroom is pretty nice ;). Standard breakfast food, could use a bit more seasoning to the hash browns but that's really my only complaint (there's only so much you can screw up breakfast!). The pancakes are HUGE and they give you more than enough food. It's not in a strip mall as another person pointed out, but between a small one and a gas station in a stand alone building. Since the closing of Beckett's, Sunrise Cafe has become the go-to, weekday early morning breakfast place for many of the VB locals living off Great Neck Road. Clean, comfortable, pleasant servers, standard diner/coffee shop menu (with an occasional attempt to get fancy with some exotic Specials like Chipped Beef --- don't do it!), and good Coffee Shop prices, although the old Beckett's $3.99 Special is $4.49 here. As long as you stick to the regular menu and don't try to get fancy, what's not to like about the place? Overall, a good way to start your day. read more

Love, love going here for breakfast! The food is great and I always have enough to take home and enjoy later. The staff is always friendly and very helpful. I encourage everyone to give them a try, you won't be disappointed. The pancakes are to die for especially the pumpkin pancakes. The servers were really sweet and the business was child friendly. Everything we ordered was so yummy! I would recommend this place for sure! The prices were great too! I ordered the pancake combo which came with eggs and choice of meat. I also ordered a side of warm cinnamon apples and ate those with the buttermilk pancakes! Yummy!!!! I've been a couple times but not recently and the previous visits were not great or memorable. The food was mediocre at best on this visit. The hash browns were among the worst I can think of eating. We tipped cash ~20% and they added about 15% tip to the credit card charge that was not added by us. We will dispute it, but I wouldn't recommend doing business with a company like that. I assume they thought we stiffed them a tip. There are plenty of other places to eat. Go to one of those instead. read more

This restaurant was very disappointing. I come to Virginia Beach at least 2-3 times a year (often for several weeks at a time), and this was probably one of the worst restaurants I have patronized in all the times I have visited. The coffee was hot, but extremely watered down and flavorless, though we were told that they grind fresh roasted beans on site. We were told by our waitress that their gravy and hollandaise sauce were both delicious, but neither had any seasoning or flavor at all. My daughter's hash browns were raw, white, chewy, and cold, and her sausage links were cold and dried out. My Mexican omelet had frozen onions and peppers inside that had not thawed during cooking, and the jalapeños in the omelet were spoiled. The waitress couldn't give us pricing on side items because she said she was new and didn't know everything yet, but never offered to find out. She also didn't dry her hands after washing them and shook them off at our table, splattering water from her hands into my eyes, face, and mouth. The one highlight was my oldest daughter's waffle, which was actually (according to her) quite good. We will not be back. read more
