I recently held my birthday dinner here and they were great. Service was top notch, they were checking in regularly and we didn't need to wait long for food for our party of 25. A friend brought in fresh caught bass and they were able to clean and cook it into a clay pot, it was a delicious dish! Pros: food is great, I enjoy pretty much anything I order from here. I really wanted to love this place, but I think if you're in the area, I'd go across the street. One positive about this restaurant over the ones across the street is that parking is easier to find here, at least in my experience. It's a little less busy, which is nice for not waiting. I think we has an OK experience, and Yelp gives that as a 3. Compared to other HK/Canto style places, there was just something lacking. Something that gave other places an extra oomph. We got a whole duck, and it was massive. Good amount of food for that, ok taste. Same for the other things we got; there was a decent amount of food, flavor just OK. Highly recommend if you have a larger party! All the items we tried were delicious, big portioned, and packed with flavor! The sweet and sour soup was slightly on the spicy side but not too spicy for me and would recommend some rice to go with if you cannot tolerate. Sweet and sour pork was amazing and flavor as well. Favorite dish was the shrimp and lobster dish again great with rice and a cold beverage. The chicken dish we had was slightly chilled and like warm so not sure if they wanted to bring it out that way, usually I've had either or but still great. The water glasses were red solo cups but we ended up filling with Beer hahah worked out great. We even saw people we knew coming in on the way out, so that goes to show this place does get traction. So met my cousin from LA here after my dr appt in EG. Neither of us live in sac, but when we realized we were both in town and hungry, we met here bc this is a favorite spot for both of us. He eats meat and I don't, but we both find dishes to share family style and we both love their food. The service is always so friendly and the prices are very reasonable. The portions are generous and they have easy parking. It can get crowded, inside and the lot on holidays and special occasions/ events like, Asian holidays- but normally it's just comfortably lively. Small Chinese Restaurant that has been in the neighborhood for decades. Parking is limited, with spots in front and on side, as well as on street and some behind, but the place is on the smaller side so you can usually find a spot. I got the #3 for 2 people, which included House chow mein(we order w/o vegetables), House Fried Rice, Prawns and foil wrapped chicken, and added an order of Orange chicken to go. This was plenty of food for my wife, myself and 23 year old son(when my daughters home, I will bump it to an oreder for 3 The house chow mein and fried rice are both fresh, with plenty of shrimp, pork and chicken mixed in . The lrawns come with sweet n sour sauce for dipping, are large, panko'd and flavorful. Foil wrapped chicken is juicy and succulent once opened. Our usual is sweet and sour pork(sauce comes seperated to pour on), but this tine out we trued the Orange Chicken. It was Crunchyz saucy and very good . My family used to go to Far East Cafe a lot when they had their old owner. This is my first time back with the new owner and the food is still great. The waitresses are very nice and fast. The place still has the old school Chinese cafe charm. We ordered fried chicken with soy sauce, 10/10, the chicken was moist even without the sauce. Foo kien crispy rice noodles, you have to eat this right away or the crispy noodles become hard 9/10, far east special stir fry. I randomly picked this one and it was interesting with squid, crispy taro, small smelt fish, and a little spicy, 9/10. We ordered a lot more but those were my highlights. read more

This Chinese restaurant has been opened for quite awhile in Sacramento. There might have been some turnover in management, but I don't have enough information to really comment on it. Parking here can be challenging, they might have a smaller additional lot in the back - there's also street parking in the residential streets. I came here for a family dinner. We had a large table (probably more than 10+ people). My uncle did all the ordering. In terms of the food, everything was pretty good. I can't recall all the dishes we ordered unfortunately. One thing that surprised me was their kid-friendliness. They even had plastic cute plates with dividers for the kids. Overall, this is one of the few surviving Chinese restaurants on Freeport Blvd and I would probably return. read more

Was craving Chinese so I decided to try this place. My order was ready when I got there. When I got home and tried it. It was pretty good. Even though their fried rice and chow mein looked like it was going to be salty due to the color but it wasn't. Same thing with their salt and pepper spare ribs. Tonight there was a birthday party and I watched all the delicious dishes being delivered to the party room : lobster , crabs , steamed fish , etc . We truer their signature soy sauce chicken. The meat is tender and flavored with rose wine and soy sauce. I'm staying with a friend for the weekend in Sacramento and we decided to gat some Chinese food to go, cause we really didn't feel like getting all dressed to go out. She's Chinese and said she knew of a good Chinese place nearby, so I said sure, you do the ordering. So she gets on the phone and orders, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Salted fish with chicken fried rice ( I never had this before), pan fried tomato beef chow mien and some pot stickers. That was a lot for just the two of us, but I'm paying, since I'm the guest in her house. We head over there and the food is ready just as we arrive. We get back and replat most of the food, cause who wants to get nice food out of a box! The pictures look better too! The pot stickers we had first cause they cool off fast. The Salty fish fried rice with chicken was interesting, I never had a flavor like that before, but I liked it! The honey walnut shrimp were very good, not all thick breading and gloppy sauce like some places. I really liked the tomato beef pan fried noodles, I guess it's call Hong Kong style. We came in on a weekday for an early dinner. There is a small parking lot in front of the restaurant and parking was not a problem at this time. We were seated right away. The dining room has plenty of tables. We appreciated the hot tea and complimentary chicken and corn soup. The chicken hong kong style chow mein was nice and crispy although the sauce could have used a stronger flavor profile and was undersalted. The mixed vegetable dish had a nice variety of vegetables. We ordered the 3 dish for 48.95, salt and pepper spare ribs, beef stew clay pot, braised cod clay pot, in addition to Singapore rice noodle, beef gravy chow fun and stir fry ribs. Prices r def on the more expensive side here for chinese food. Food came out relatively quick, spare ribs were good crisp and good flavor, not too oily or fatty. Clay pots were a bit small, fish one did not have alot of fish, mainly tofu, beef stew decent, pretty tender. Noodle dishes were decent, lacking a bit flavor but thats how it usually be. Stir fry ribs not bad, good flavor with the black bean but the ribs were very small pieces, majority bone and alot of fat lol. Service was nice, they were friendly, checked in on us, they usually give the herbal jelly afterwards but they only had 3 left lols. I have mixed reviews at Far East Cafe because when I went a few months ago, it was absolutely terrible. Everything was either bland or too salty, all the dishes came out slowly and was either too dry or not hot. I ate here for back to back days, ordering different items and everything was on point. Their salted egg pumpkin and mushroom was my favorite and my least favorite was their ying yang fried rice, the red sauce was very light. Food was right off the stove....still steaming when I got home. Veggies were super fresh and tasted pretty good. Would have given 5 stars but if I remember right the last time I ordered it had chopped garlic which gave it a little more flavoring. It's a quiet corner café and and we felt comfortable sitting in a booth. It's very bright inside during the day but a sense of warmth at night with their lighting, not too bright. Their specials are amazing and a great price. Their potsticker sauce was very different and I never had that kind before. This was a restaurant my family frequent quite often as I was growing up. Overall, the food was quite tasty. We came on a weekday for an early dinner. The food is quite authentic and with decent portion sizes. The dishes were all prepared quickly and ingredients were fresh. I am all about not soggy vegetables and these were on point. Service was very quick -- I think it helped that our family is acquainted with the staff here. The inside is clean and neat. There are a few parking spaces out front. Slight kick to it but nothing to cry about. ~salt and pepper fish filets; tasty and not oily There were other new items shown on the TV monitor (whole crab with DF pumpkin, two egg/fried scallop fried rice, and numerous other dishes we will try next time). Service is always top notch here; Leslie and Lisa were attentive and friendly as always, along with the owner Susan. It's always a plus when she stops by not to just say "hi" but to also ask about family and such. You can tell she has a great rapport with customers (acknowledging each other and calling each other on a first name basis). I used to come here all the time, some 30 years ago, when Uncle Sammy used to own this place. Every time anyone walked in, Uncle Sammy would greet them loudly and usually by name. The food was very authentic, cheap, and homey. I have not been back here for about 20 years... things have changed. I think the food is still about the same but my pallet has changed due to all the competition around. Service was good, very attentive. Prices are reasonable. The dried fried shrimp was my favorite, as well as the grass jelly dessert. They really need to do something about their booths. I went with a friend and cousin and none of us are that big, but, even we were not that comfortable. As we were sitting there, we saw other people struggle to get in and out of the booth or requested to be seated elsewhere. There is not enough space between the seat and the table. I've eaten here numerous times but finally got around to writing a review. I stopped by at lunchtime and ordered the lunch specials: chicken with green beans and Mongolian beef. Each lunch special comes with chow mein, steamed rice, and a small bowl of egg drop soup. The restaurant was getting busy, but the servers were quick and provided excellent customer service. There's plenty of seating, so even during the lunch rush, it didn't feel overcrowded. As for the food, my chicken with green beans lacked flavor, and the chow mein was a bit too salty for my taste this time. However, on other occasions, the food has been better, so I'm chalking this up to an off day. I also ordered the duck over rice and BBQ pork over rice to-go, and both were delicious, highly recommend them those for lunch special! One issue I have to mention, though, is that a customer seated behind me had an extremely strong body odor, which made it difficult to enjoy my meal. I'm usually pretty empathetic and not easily bothered, but it was overwhelming. While this isn't the restaurant's fault, it did affect my overall experience. Overall, Far East Cafe is a solid spot, especially for takeout. I'll give it another try. read more

My family dined in for Christmas dinner due to it being a hectic holiday for us and not being able to cook a traditional meal. We were pleasantly surprised how delicious the food was and how friendly ALL the staff were during our visit. They checked in throughout the meal and the dishes came out promptly. We had fried shrimp, broccoli beef, honey walnut shrimp, fried rice and chow mein. Both the egg flower soup and pot of hot tea came complimentary. Inside was clean for a restaurant that has been in business ages. I used to eat here when I was in high school over 40 years ago. It was early for dinner so they were not busy at all. I was told to sit anywhere . Menu and glass of water was immediately provided. I ordered the West Lake beef soup and curry beef stew over rice. This is what they called mushrooms yee mein (efu noodles). Tasteless and no flavor at all. The noodles are so soggy that the moment I picked them up with my chopsticks, it fell apart. Also, where are the mushrooms? I only found a few small pieces, 90% of them are noodles. What a rip off? Very good Veggie Spring Rolls- crunchy wrapping (not greasy), fresh and crisp veg, with house made Sweet and Sour Sauce! Beef Chow Fun had lots of meat, onions, sprouts and ethereal noodles!!! The Honey Walnut Prawns were lightly battered, plump, with delicious honey roasted walnut halves. The pork fried rice was good- it was, however, missing that smokey wok flavor. We still enjoyed it. Love the very old decor. Maybe I missed it, but I would love to read about the restaurant's history, and the old art on the walls while waiting for food. There's a story to share, I'm sure! Great family owned independent restaurant! We have lived in the neighborhood a while and conveniently just moved down the street! My mom brought some over for lunch and since then I've got my dad to go and my in-laws! Huge portions! Everybody loves it, perfect for sharing. Lots of vegetables which is one of my favorite things about the place. So far I've tried the vegetable chow mein, vegetable fried rice, eggplant with garlic sauce, and soft tofu with vegetables. I remember our last sit down meal here was September of 2005 bc we used to frequent here quite regularly with my BIL & his wife. In the meantime my BIL had passed on that following month. We don't really eat Chinese food all that much even though my wife is Chinese American. Fast forward earlier this month we had a Japanese family event here unbeknownst to my sister & BIL they chose CNY 2024 day to gather. Yes the restaurant was packed even at lunchtime! We sat in their third event room furtherest away from the front door. It was a convenient private room for us. We enjoyed a ten course delightful filling meal with soup, seafood & veggies, Peking ribs & salt & pepper ribs, walnut shrimp, crab, chicken & noodles, bok choy & mushrooms, salt and pepper fish & beef dishes. We were very impressed with their service & food was truly authentic. Not oily at all & dishes were of a very generous serving. There was so much food for our table of six that they had to go in to go cartons & boxes for other family members who couldn't attend. I'm sure we would return now when we get an urge for Chinese food even for food to go! I guess during those 20 years in between they had change of ownership but it still was going strong here! Plan accordingly! I could have dock off one star for the one person restroom but hey don't wait if it's urgent. We won't hesitate next time especially for that favorite walnut shrimp dish!
