Visit Date: January 24, 2015 My sister asked to pick a place for her birthday so based on yelp reviews I picked this place. My family liked it and I think if I had ordered something different I might have enjoyed it more. If I do go back and order something different I will update my review to reflect that. The place was clean, and the servers were very nice. I can't publish this photo but after singing happy birthday to my sister the servers agreed to take a birthday photo with her. I wasn't really happy with my heuvos rancheros. I was really excited about ordering them and everything else on the menu looked terrific so I expected my food to be great too. The black beans could have used more seasoning and the portion size could have been bigger. Sometimes I am a hungry girl so when I get a portion smaller than what I was expecting it does disappoint me a little bit. The salsa served with the dish was slightly runny too. The diner is also very cramped. It looks great but there's so many tables packed into one little space and I don't dig spaces that make me feel like I'm practically on top of other people or bumping into other people to get to my table. So if I come back and order a different dish and like it more I'll be happy to update my review and give this place more stars. read more

Great diner near the train station. This is the first diner I enjoyed since the pandemic . All the other diners been price gouging with inflation. Food was tasty and affordable. I had two eggs, white toast, home fries and sausage. Service was traffic and fast. (Other diners I been too had almost no staff and took a long time to order) Food took less than 15 mins to come out. My sisters and I came in for brunch for my eldest sisters birthday. immediately we were stared at by all the guests and staff being the only black women in the establishment. While waiting for our food the host was continuously walking past our table and staring at us. We finally got our food and was still being watched by staff. My younger sister and I had finished our food (which was not bad whatsoever) and the waitress brought out our check before my older sister had even thought about finishing. My kids and I are on a mission to try as many of the diners on Long Island as possible for breakfast. Generally, on Saturday mornings, we go for a bike ride, then out to breakfast. This week, we headed to the Sunrise Diner in Wantaugh, NY, since we had just finished riding our bikes on the Jones Beach Boardwalk. As far as Diners go, and compared to others we've been to, this one is a bit on the smaller side, which is ok. It has that standard retro diner look for sure. There's some parking on the side and more parking in the back. They have outdoor seating if you want it, but we sat inside at a table. The waitress came over immediately and took our orders. Our drinks came out quick and our waitress was back to take our food order. My kids go juice and I got coffee. My son loves chocolate chip pancakes as his go to, so he ordered that. My daughter loves nutella french toast, so she got that on Challah bread. Me, I just like a standard breakfast, so I got two eggs over medium with ham, home fries, and an English muffin. At this point, my coffee is already getting a little low and voila, our waitress is on it like a champ. There was one small thing "bugging" me, and that was the presence of flies inside the restaurant. They didn't seem to be around the food, but just hanging around on the glass on the wall partitions. Having flies around just kind of grosses me out. However, I'm not faulting the restaurant here, as they probably didn't even know they were there, it's just something that somebody should keep tabs on and I didn't want to cause a fuss by mentioning it and rile up the neighboring fellow diners. I would just put the flies out of my mind. After a very short wait, our food comes out. My son is over the moon as his pancakes look great. My daughter's french toast looks very yummy as well and she's smiling. That's all I pretty much care about, that they are happy with their meals. My breakfast comes out and it looks good as well. I take a bite of the home fries, and while the flavor is ok, they are not hot....bordering on barely warm. Home fries need to be hot. My eggs...over medium to me is still having some liquidity to the yolk, my yolks were fully cooked through. Nevertheless, the eggs, combined with the ham, and English muffin tasted great. I ended up not eating much of the tepid home fries. My daughters french toast tasted very good, but pieces of it were not fully cooked through. I told my daughter to just cut those away and not eat it. I'm nitpicking here, because there wasn't much and my daughter spots little inconsistencies like a hawk. My son devoured his chocolate chip pancakes and gave them a thumbs up. My daughter couldn't finish her french toast and we asked for a box....they instead took the plate away and packed up everything for us very quickly. Service is very good. I felt like we were waiting on very quickly. The fly situation put me in an uneasy mood with everything being focused now on cleanliness, I just didn't like to see them in the restaurant. The staff was fully masked and I know they are doing everything in their power to keep the place clean. Given the few minor hiccups with my food, the flies, etc., I wouldn't hesitate to come here again, but with so many diners on Long Island, we are probably not going to return until our quest to visit more diners continues with other establishments on Long Island. read more

Solid diner offering lunch specials with a decent selection of salads and sandwiches. I preferred the Turkey club, it was exactly what it should be, fresh turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato on toast. First, I rarely do this and we get around & do a lot of take out and so on, like most of you. This is normally an excellent Diner, had some hiccups w/take out, but I will continue to come based on what is being served around & near here. Normally, I order the same item, probably 20 times, Turkey Club, Russian, Fries & rings and a burger or something for my wife It started at under $ 10, now $ 16, no problem and I understand. We are particular, as all of you, price isn't an issue, the food and the place is. I ordered from the car coming from a 2 hour trip. I could of picked up anywhere. I ordered the Turkey club on rye, fries w/rings, We would split the sandwich. Now that is an important sentence!! This is based on what we had always received for years, I could never finish half and hate the left over. So I ordered! First, I was told, they can't split fries & rings, only comes with the burger? Not sure what that meant, I said I had always received it, He said he would put in 2 rings in, again, not sure what he meant, or where this was going. We picked up, went home and opened The pickles and coleslaw are now child size, and I understand! I opened the now smaller box, it used to hold just the fries and NOW THE SANDWICH WAS IN THERE, It was smaller, & had 4 thin slices of turkey on it. I can only say, this must be a mistake, as I had it a month ago, or I would not of come, ordered, OR SPLIT IT. EMBARRASSING, BTW, it was easily finished. The mountain of fries you used to get were in a small burger size box. Is it a mistake and you raised the price, cut the portions by 1/2 of turkey slices, trying to make it up on portions, & the fries etc., to make a difference, then I understand. But you have to change the menu pictures then as that is deceiving. I'm confused who's idea this was, and did you think doing this to the once large and feared club would go unnoticed. And the fries, limp,,soggy, and also happy they were not the normal over powering order. I know you have a great business, people were lined up but I HATE TAKEOUT SURPRISES!, Especially when I am a repeat customer, and count on you. I also don't want to be part of mistakes, not to be practiced or tested on, or given & not given, anything by mistake as that is unprofessional. When its take out, I can't call you to the table, send it back or ask for anything, so we are stuck with what you decided to give us or not check on. If you feel this is now it, sending a smaller sandwich version of what was expected, and a small portion of soggy fries and that's all you can do, then change the menu picture & I apologize in advance and will move on. I also know if you served this at the restaurant or at my table, it would of been an issue, I would of returned it or left but that was not case. I just wasted more valuable time writing this, as with your order last night. I hope it was all worth the cuts you made, a few extra slices and fries. read more

The Sunrise Diner prepared the most delicious Greek omelet I have ever had in my entire life

The food is basically tasteless. When we placed our order we asked the waitress to make the eggs soft and she said he only makes them one way and that is soft. he also only makes the French toast one way. I opted it for pancakes with walnuts and eggs. I think mediocre would be a good description for both. I did enjoy the sausage. I also asked for bananas on top of pancakes and they found the oldest brown banana in quickly cut it up and put it on my meal. I will never come here again. Even if the meal was free I wouldn't come back here. read more

Came here for breakfast for the first time. I am NEVER ever happy with diners but this place was awesome . Lovely Greek lady at the front showed kindness to us. Wow best diner food I've ever had. Almost as decent as a real restaurant!! The chipotle fries (and the reg french fries) are very scrumptious. Along with those, nothing was too salty or too dry. Their OJ is actually freshly squeezed and not out of a carton or anything. What gives this place an ultimate 5 stars is the service. Forgot to get the mans name (has white short hair, middle-aged, told us he worked there for 31+ yrs) - super sweet and conversational ! Checked on us regularly and completed our orders properly. Mediocre. I tend to hit a lot of diners and wanted to try this out as I was in the neighborhood. The place has been here for a long time but it does not look its age. It is well laid out in one big room with a counter area towards the rear. Service was spotty - the bus guy was johnny on the spot with the coffee refills but the waiter was slow from the gate with the actual coffee. Food was ok - merely edible but nothing to get pumped about- I make better omelets at home to be honest. Prices are average - Smallish parking area around the perimeter. read more

This is my go-to hometown diner. The food is good and usually fresh and pretty consistent. However, lately the servers have had such an attitude and treated us so nastily, that I believe tonight was my last trip there. No respect or courtesy from our waiter from the time we sat down and he said "what do you want?" to the time we left and he miscalculated our bill and came back to replace it with one of a higher cost. He also messed up my order due to not listening, and kept slamming our drinks and dishes down. The only polite people were the bus boys, who did ten times more than our waiter did. I have eaten at the Sunrise Diner on average four times per week for nearly 20 years. I have never had a sub-par meal. The food is exactly what you ordered, cooked to perfection and is always delivered hot. The waiters know you by name and go out of their way to refill your cup of coffee or soda before needing to ask. They give you extra napkins exactly at the right time. All of the owners are very welcoming and always have a nice word. One of the owners, Jerry, is constantly reinventing the Diner, new dishes, with hi tech special of the night menu board and now internet ordering and local delivery. The bus boys fill your water at the exact moment you think of it. Empty dishes are cleared from table like lightning. My favorite is the burger deluxe and their spinach pie and geek salad combo is tasty and filling. read more

Was looking for a place to grab a quick dinner. After numerous restaurants with wait times of up to an hour we decided to check out this diner which is right in our own neighborhood. We were seated immediately and served promptly by a very delightful waitress. Food came quickly. My gyro platter was very tasty, unfortunately my husbands order of short ribs weren't so good, very fatty not really a dish to he served in a diner. Sunrise Diner, hands down is one of the best diners I have ever been to. The other day I got a Mediterranean Panini (spinach, roasted red peppers, grilled eggplant, grilled zucchini, with hummus) that came with a side of chickpea salad- that I wasn't afraid to eat (unlike the coleslaw most diners usually give you). My other favorites are their avocado toast, chicken teriyaki and their breakfast quesadilla to name a few. Try it out if your in the area, any food they make is pretty good and you will not be disappointed! read more

Came in here for dinner around 7:30 a couple days ago. The diner was about 3/4 full so we were seated right away. I ordered a turkey club sandwich for $12 and my girlfriend ordered a chicken panini which came to about $14. The turkey club was okay. There was not a lot of turkey on the bread which I was surprised about because of the great reviews of the food on Yelp. The tomatoes on the panini looked old also. Although, the tomatoes on my club looked fresh. I will say that the waiter was very nice and our water glasses were always full. Nothing stood out about this diner compared to the numerous other diners in the area. Definitely not the best place to get a turkey club. read more

Open early in the morning and late at night, and right near the station. This diner is quieter than the places on Merrick road, even when every table is full. You can talk without overhearing the conversations in the booths around you. Service is fast and attentive, and there are some good vegetarian options. Try the yogurt parfait for breakfast, the spinach pie for lunch, the veggie burger for dinner. Apparently it's bean based, not soy, but check with the server. There is a small parking lot, but for parking on the street you're competing with train commuters, so good luck! read more

I have gone here for years and never had an issue. The food was usually fresh and price slightly higher than other diners. Last week I went for breakfast and ordered 2 eggs scrambled typical breakfast with toast. The waiter said do you want juice? I figured since almost all diners include a shot glass of juice with breakfast that I would have some orange juice. When I received the bill I was charged $3.99 for orange juice. Almost more than my entire breakfast. This seems to be a scam to tack on more money buy the waiters and owners to increase the bill. Not professional at all! read more

A must for anyone who lives ON Long Island or who visits here. The Sunrise Diner has been a long standing tradition here on Long Islands South Shore. This is the definition of a true Long Island diner. The food is always great and served hot. The menu is so diverse and you can order anything just about anytime: one of the benefits of a diner. The place is super clean including the bathrooms by the very attentive staff. The boss is always here to make sure everything runs like clockwork. The minute you sit down you are part of a syncopated "dance" of the well choreographed staff who move like a well trained dancer. The speed and very agile movements of everyone from the hostess, waiters, busboys and the boss is like a Broadway show (minus the orchestra). For regulars this is just business as usual but I have experienced the look on the faces of my diner guests who are here for the first time. If you're in a hurry they will get you done in the prescribed time and if you need to linger they will not push you out after you're finished. Seeing the line growing at the front door is a subliminal hint to finish up and give someone else the chance to eat. I've been to hundreds of diners but this one is the best by far. It's so nice to be someplace where the entire staff knows you and your coffee is placed in front of you before you can sit down. So take the time to check this place out. I live in massapequa and I am not a fan of the massapequa diner, so was looking for a better option close by. Wow! Sunrise Diner was an incredible experience. My girlfriend and I have frequented this diner a few times a week for the last few months and considered it our "go-to" diner. However, due to a terrible experience, with a very rude waiter ( I wish I had a name, but he never bothered to introduce himself) we've decided to take out business elsewhere. We waited over 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us and when our server showed up, he seemed like he did not want to be there and was very impatient with my friend's questions. Our food came out cold and the orders were all wrong. My BLT had more lettuce than anything, the bacon was fatty and soggy and looked like it was precooked and sat around in the kitchen all day ! My friend's salad had everything in it that she had asked to be removed and lacked the additions that she ordered. The coffee was reminiscent of mud, though the waiter insisted that their coffee is "ALWAYS fresh" ...... How is that even possible ? I'm so livid that I had to cool down for over two weeks just to write this review and now I am living my frustration all over again. I get the "create your own plate" which is your choice between 3 proteins and you get 2 sides for $15. I probably eat the salmon at least once a week. I get it cajun style the piece of salmon is always huge and they don't skimp on the sides. Usually get the sautéed string beans with mash or fries. They have really good burgers too. Never hd anything i don't like until they changed up their buffalo chicken panini. Which stinks bc it was reallly good. Sometimes the some of the staff doesn't come off as very friendly, but thats okay i usually get it to go:) They arent as cheap as some diners but if you don't mind spending a little more than a deli for an egg sandwich once in a while, they make a mean bacon(extra crispy), egg and cheese. Ok service but the food wasnt great. I got the lunch special; soup and gyro. Vegetable soup tasted like it might be from a can because it was very salty. And the lamb gyro wasnt much better. Went here because it has 4 stars. My husband and I went for breakfast at 8 am Sunday morning. My husband ordered the burger with the egg on top. He ordered it medium rare. It was totally well done. It wasn't even hot. It was warm and tasted like it was steamed. Fries were greasy and salty. I ordered the avocado omelette with Home fries and rye toast. The rye toast was good. The omelette and Home fries were borderline warm leaning towards cold. The omelette was overlooked with greasy cheese inside, hard avocado and chewy bacon. Coffee was strong. Great diner with good food and very friendly staff. I've been going to this neighborhood diner my entire life and it is still one of my favorites. Only reason I didn't give them the full 5 stars is because the menu does not have a lot of variety. For a diner they don't have a lot of options or creative dishes. There are plenty of diners and breakfasts/brunch places in the area with new and creative dishes so it would be nice if sunrise diner did the same. read more
