Cozy, small-sized asian supermarket in Milbrae next to a bunch of chinese restaurants. Has everything I was looking for (mostly frozen foods and some packaged noodles) or would expect from a chinese supermarket (large selection of sauces, candy, tea etc). Has a bunch of fresh fruits/veggies on display as well. Overall the place is very very clean, and the whole place looks like it's new. Not a bad place to stop by if you are in the area. read more

We came here before picking up our PPQ takeout to get some groceries. We were pleasantly surprised by the selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. The fruits were clean and not too ripe. The vegetables were a vibrant green color and well-stocked. The prices were decent for a small market. We were also able to find a good variety of noodles and spices. The meat and fish sections were smaller, but the market had the essentials -- sliced beef for shabu shabu, sea bass, ground pork, etc. Prices for meat and seafood were also reasonable. We also bought some durian which was a little on the pricier side, but hey, you can't have everything at a deal, right? Quality items are the main drive! We also noticed that they sold big bottles of hand sanitizer for $10.99 if anyone is in need of it since it's out of stock everywhere. The price for that is steep, but hey, if you need it, it's there. The cashier was friendly and the store was clean. We would come back if we venture across the bridge again. read more

If you check the quality of the produce and expiration dates, you get the convenience of an Asian supermarket with a higher price tag. So, drive to an Asian grocery store or walk and check what you buy. One of the pros is the carts to wheel items which isn't saying much about the inventory. The staff isn't the most helpful and the place isn't the cleanest. However, cautious shoppers can make do with what is available as long as they are selective. read more

Yes this is a small operation, "hole in the wall" supermarket. However, it is very conveniently located in downtown Millbrae for those many who live here or come here to eat often. I'm always surprised to find how much of what I need is readily shelved within its perimeters, and how competitive its prices are to Ranch 99. I totally agree to the other reviewers about the expired food Sun's been selling to customers. I bought some rotten pork bones on Feb. 25, 2013 about 2 days ago from Sun's. Since it was only couple dollars, I didn't brother to go back there to return this item. Definitely, I will not shop with them even I am a Millbrae residence. I would rather drive farther to Ranch 99 or Pacific Super since they have more selection & quality food. We have been a regular customer since this store opened and today was by far the worse experience we have ever had. My mom walked in to buy some meat and told the butcher that she wanted the second slice of meat from the back of the display. He grabbed the one in the front. My mom politely told him that she wanted the one in the back, closest to him. He then started to yell at her in Cantonese saying that she is bullshitting him and starts to swear at her in Cantonese. My mom grabbed the meat and walked to a cashier to pay, she explained the whole incident to the cashier but the cashier did not say a single word. The butcher walked by my mom and continued to swear at her. He waited outside the supermarket til my mom walked out and proceeded to swear at her. He started charging at her, wanting to hit her. A cashier immediately came out and had to pull him back. She pulled him away from my mom and while he walked away, he continued to swear. This is the butcher. He needs to be fired immediately before he harasses another customer. We will not be coming back to his supermarket. read more

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HERE!! We just bought the frozen dumpling packages last night, and when we open one of the package, all the dumplings are stuck together... We think...okay, we'll just cook it then they will come apart, after we cooked it, we found all the skins of the dumplings got little black spots on them!!! Gross!!! DO NOT SHOP AT SUNS MARKET! I work in the area so when I stumbled upon this tiny Asian market and told my mom about it. The first time my mother bought grocery there, the cashier charged her more items than it should have been. We thought it was just a dollar or two and it probably wasn't worth the drive back to argue so we let that one go. Little did we know the bag of whole garlic we got was all rotten inside. It should have been a big warning sign telling us not to trust this market ever again. Two days ago, we happened to be in the area and we needed to get some food and grocery. Since we were tired and hesitated to drive to Ranch 99 so we thought we would give Suns Market another chance. We shouldn't have. Not only were their vegetables mostly overpriced, the packaged rice noodle rolls (which you could buy the same brand from other Asian market like Ranch 99) we bought home was all molded from the bottom of the tray. The growth was spreading through inside out it was just snarly!! It is obviously that they sell expired food items and it is not acceptable. I would of given less to no star if Yelp would have allowed that. Just steer clear from this market. You've been warned. read more

Today I was rushing to get all my chinese new years shopping done and i asked the cashier i couldnt find a can of baby corn, so she asked a lady who i assume is the boss to grab one for me. The lady handed it to the cashier and put it in my grocery bag. When i got home the can was so badly dented. I went to the store in Millbrae on 8/26/21 and purchased 2 crabs. I asked them to clean and cut in pieces . When I returned home, I notice that 2 whole craws sections were missing. I called the store and she insisted that all 4 claws were included in the bag. I sent an email to their company regarding this issue and they replied that they didn't understand why 2 crab craws were missing. Offered $5 towards my next purchase, but never followed through. Did they imply I lied? I've been shopping there many years and this is very difficult for me to accept the fact that they cheated. read more

The cashier refused to sell someone in front of us a bag of beans because they didn't have a price tag on them, and she didn't know how much they cost. Sun's Market is my new go-to place for Chinese vegetables and produce, and the Sunday Sing Tao Newspapers. I like their live shrimp and live bass. I can find all the Chinese spices and soup bags (清補涼) for my cooking. Best of all I especially like the super sweet and juicy Double Happiness oranges at $0.99 a lb! I eat them twice a day, they are sweeter than the Cara Cara oranges at Costco which cost more. My new favorite is their fresh noodles & thin wonton skins from Kim Hong, at the refrigerator case. They do have room for improvement. I hope their manager, Vivian, would improve their meats a little, they are wrapped up in packages in huge portions. I hope they would offer butcher service and let me buy meats like in Whole Foods. The aisles are crowded with cartons, and the floor by the fish tanks are always wet (customers' shoes are ruined wading the water puddles to buy fish.) I still want to give Star's Market 5 stars, as their Chinese vegetables are baby fresh (嫩和新鮮), whereas those vegetables at Ranch 99 & Lion Supermarkets are so long (over 1 ft long), they are tough like tall weeds. Very small, easy to miss market. It is located at the bottom of a condo/town home building along with a few other businesses. it is close to where there are a few food joints are. But sometimes parking can be busy. Staff I have encountered are very nice. Selection is not as plentiful as other asian markets, but they do have fresh seafood, fruits and veggie sections. Sun's gets 2 stars because they have a *decent* selection of some things - but mostly Chinese - not other Asian items (they have a few common Korean items for instance). But otherwise one star, because their staff is pretty rude and unhelpful -- apparently even if you ARE Chinese or speak it (both my sons speak Mandarin; apparently doesn't cut it at Sun's). I asked about galangal - even showed the characters and a picture on my phone - got ignored by the woman in produce, then with her in front of a cashier a grunt and a sort of a no - and the cashier kind of shrugging and moving to the next customer. That's one of 7 or 8 examples of how this felt like being in markets in Shanghai (been there), the 3 times I've been to Sun's -- never again. I'll drive to 99 Ranch or Marina rather than deal with these (rude word) again. I am a huge fan of this store and go almost every day. Things I like most: 1. Live seafood! I get crab and sea bass here all the time. One time they ran out on the fish head which I was planning to get to bring up my milk (I am a breastfeeding mom), and when the guy knew what I needed it for, he brought one from back of the counter! He had reserved one for himself and paid for it already, but willing to give it to me since he felt I needed more. Such a nice guy! 2. Fresh vegetable. The vegetables here are fresh fresh fresh! Much better than the ones in bags at Ranch 99 or Marina. I guess they will have to keep them that way being a small shop; 3. Great selection of snacks and coffee. They don't have a lot of variety but they certainly have the right ones in stock! Now I rarely buy their frozen goods since I am not sure how fast the turnover is, and as a rule of thumb, I don't buy any frozen goods unless I can find the expiration dates on the packages (quite a few brands don't have that information), so I cannot comment on their quality. For meat, I usually go to Pape down the street on Broadway. When I need some American vegetable or price comparison, I go to Dean's. Between these three shops, grocery shopping is a bliss! read more

The new development in Millbrae looks so enticing. It beckons you to slow down along this short strip of El Camino and Monocle all the new restaurants and shops in the new building. Among them... Sun's Market. Sun's Market looked promising. It's a short stroll down the street from the BF's house, so I was looking forward to having an alternative for groceries outside of Trader Joe's and Safeway. Sometimes... you just can't make the drive out to SSF to get certain ingredients for your Asian recipes. I was also hoping they had something similar to Pacific Super's fish cleaning/frying service. If you've ever actually set foot in the store itself, you can imagine my disappointment upon entering. The place is SO small. I've been in gas stations that were bigger than this place. When you walk in, produce is on your right, frozen is along the back wall, and the seafood is on your left. And as tiny as this place is, you wouldn't think that it would be at all confusing..... and that is where you would be wrong. The aisles make as much sense as the aisles in a tiny 7-11. Candy and ramen together? Apparently they're in the same food group. And where exactly do you line up to pay? Because I stood 2 feet behind someone that was paying the cashier, yet the other people shopping in different aisles that weren't even remotely close to the registers were able to pay before me. Hmm. But maybe it's just a lack of common sense, customer service, and etiquette on behalf of the other shoppers and the employees. Groceries are pricier than other stores in the area. Selection for every category is limited. Freshness of produce is severely lacking. Customer service is nonexistent. I will happily drive the 5 miles to Pacific Super for my ingredients and Asian groceries, or go back to the little produce place on Broadway. read more

Though my husband and I have a language barrier issue with the folks that work here, I love this little place--there's unexpected foodstuffs piled high, curious things I never knew existed. I'm not Chinese nor Asian (though South Asian), so I'm unfamiliar with much of it. That said, we got these Shanghai style pork and chicken dumplings, with which we needed black vinegar. We had no idea what to get, though a vague notion of what the bottle looked like. They had three kinds on their shelf and after some attempts to communicate with the staff, we ended up buying both, none of which worked out. But we appreciated that the lady at the checkout called another young woman who tried to talk to us and pointed out another bottle--it looked sketchy and we didn't buy it (though should've :-) The prices can't be beat, e.g. I saw one of my all time favorite fruits: the pomelo, and honestly it was as big as my head--only around five bucks. If there was a way to give them zero stars, I would. Food here is NOT FRESH. Buyer beware! Even though there are tanks with live fish, you might not get a live one if you're not careful. That's what happened to us today (our last day we'll be shopping here). My wife wanted a tilapia about 2 pounds from the tank. The old man scooped a fish out for her and gave her a quick peek. I was standing a little further than my wife. We were both focusing on the size of the fish and said that's ok. I did noticed that the fish appeared to be motionless and I'm thinking that's because it was trapped in a pretty stiff net. While my wife walked to the other part of the meat department, the old man brought the net and the fish over to his cleaning station (and I still didn't see the fish moving) and the old man hit the head of the fish softly with a rubber mallet to "kill" the fish before weighing and gutting the fish. As the old man was gutting the fish, I didn't see bright red blood from the fish, only some brownish red blood. I suspected that the fish wasn't alive when it was scooped from the tank. After we got home and my wife was getting ready to prepare the fish for dinner, she realized that the fish we bought was a spoiled fish. The eyes of the fish wasn't clear and the meat inside the fish belly was rotten and dis-colored. The old man who scooped the fish out of the tank must have known that, but he continued to put on a show with the mallet to "kill" a dead fish. We felt cheated. We paid more per pound for a live fish and Sun's Market prices were already higher than other Asian markets like 99 Ranch; we didn't get what we paid for. After reading reviews from other yelpers, I could see a pattern that Sun's products in stock are not fresh. There are other Asian supermarkets and we will definitely be going to those other markets...we'll never ever step foot into Sun's Market again. If you do, exercise caution...buyer beware! read more

A little pricier than most asian super markets. they don't have too big of a variety but it'll do if you're in need of something basic and don't want to drive to too far for some string beans. i gave them two stars for their service though. nowhere does it say it's a $10 minimum for credit card charge. i only had $2 cash on me and about $8 or $9 worth of groceries. granted, that's not a lot, but it would have been nice to just let me purchase the items and let me know for next time. instead of adding an item to make it $10, i just left all the things behind. i rather drive a few miles down and go to a store more accommodating then spend my $$ here when i was so close that $10 mark, but they wouldn't budge to save on that .25cents credit card transaction fee. i probably won't be back. unless i desperately need some asian food and all the other stores around are closed. read more

I like this market, in the middle of my work and home. Very convenient. Like their fresh produce and fruits. The reason I give a three stars is because the girl at the register need to be trained for better service. After the items being checked out and paid, instead of helping the customer to bag them, she started to play with her phone. There were a lot of groceries, need sometime to bag them, the whole time she was playing with her phone, Not very attentive but ignorant. I was surprised the store allow employee to use their phone when they work. Or maybe she just sneak around and doesn't care. Anyway, the store should have a better service policy. read more

While it is a nice option to have a chinese market closer than 99 ranch and Marina, I only come here out of necessity. Store is much busier than pre-covid which is wonderful for the business...but they are not taking enough safety precautions for covid. Staff routinely has mask on their chin vs. covering their mouth and nose. Store is very cramped and number of people in the store is not being managed. read more

Watch out how they price your weighed meat. I was buying some pork bones but charged me with the pork belly price. I argued with the butcher and he keep insisting he was right. So, i went to the cashier and complained and the cashier told me i was right and maybe the butcher did not understand what i was asking even though the prices were in front of him where he grabbed the pork bones. The worse thing was when he knew he cant duped me, he grind at me as i walked towards the cashier. And yet the cashier did not apologize. I guess the consolation price the cashier changed the correct price which was about $4 difference. read more

I love this neighborhood Asian grocery store! Small but has everything, literally everything, you need for Asian families. And because of its size, so much easier to find your item in a manageable amount of space. Forgive me, I frequently have to circle around and around in 99 ranch for one or two items. Prices at Sun's are decent too. I love their peony grapes. So delicious. A great selection of produce, meat and seafood. What more can you ask for? Millbrae residents are so lucky :) read more

Never thought I'd have to give a market a poor review, but I am. And to give you an idea, I've had a terrible experience at this market before, started a poor review and decided not to post. Maybe it was an off day. I thought, maybe I just won't go for awhile and give them a shot later. Guess it didn't matter. If I could give them zero stars, I would. First off, I don't agree with the general statement that one should expect poor service from an Asian establishment. Service is service! And you know what? There isn't much to ask for! My initial poor experience involved pricing labels. I bought 3 things expecting them each to cost 99 cents or $1 as labeled. When I checked out, the ladies charged me more and said the labels were for other items. I was not offended by the price, but how they acted in the situation. They ARGUED that I was wrong and even when I pointed out their labels, they said those labels were for other items. I.e.: only one type of bean sprouts was available. Only one price for bean sprouts was listed. What else is there to understand?? Today, they only had one register open. I was 3rd in line and standing next to the second register. When one of the younger workers stepped into the register area, I asked if she was opening up. She just stared at me. I asked again and she stared a little longer until I tilted my head. She then mumbled yes. She rung me up, told me the price, and then started wringing up customer #4 before I even gave her money. Jeez! On top of that, she refused to accept some of the change I gave her. One was a Chinese coin I'd gotten from another store (because I've never exchanged for that currency) and another that was a dirty penny. For the first, she said, "this is not a penny!" Ok, fine. I was in the middle of grabbing another when she yelled out about another. At that point, she was huffing and puffing so much I yelled back at her that it was! She then said, "I can't see it!" So then I gave her another shiny penny took my change and left. I was furious and in hindsight, wished I'd just given back the items I'd purchased and taken my money elsewhere. It is not worth it to me. My déteste for this place is more about the terrible people. We don't have to speak the same language to be cordial. I'd rather drive all the way to San Mateo or South City for better quality ingredients. read more

It's official, Millbrae, you're REALLY Asian. This market--clearly catering to the burgeoning Chinese/Asian community-- recently opened up in the business sector of the new condos next to South Sea Restaurant and the big Hollywood video Millbrae sign. As of today, there's no official sign on the storefront.. just two glass doors. The store is overall pretty small, but the selection is great with veggies and fruits (such as ong choy, Chinese celery, fresh wonton noodles, durian, etc.), with comparable quality and freshness to Chinatown. There's also a few narrow aisles of canned foods and sauces, but it covers the basics, whether you want instant noodles, plum sauce, or dried goods for soup. They are still building the inventory for this area, but I surmise it will cover all your bases. The "best" part (as my parents have not stopped talking about this since it opened) is that they have live fish and other seafood in tanks, as well as an extensive butcher area. Prices were very reasonable, and according to the people there, they make daily deliveries on seafood and the like. It's a small place and very clean--probably only for now. I figure that once more people start finding out about it, it'll get reallyyy crowded and poppin'. But Asian families, rejoice! No more needto trek out to the city or Daly City/SSF to get your fix of Asian groceries. Also, I must note they have those new nifty baskets that function like carts. So cool. read more
