I love this market in Millbrae. I didn't expect to find good Russian candies and goodies on Valentine's Day over here this year, but I have found more than enough today. Their candies/chocolates/cookies/breads are all very good in selections and prices. Amazing. Affordable. Some items are much cheaper than other places. It's very convenient and successful in the area on Broadway. Fruits and vegetables do stand out. It felt like I'm not in the U.S. for a moment after browsing the aisles. Fresh fresh fresh! All items looked good. Not sure if owner is Russian or European, but it's a unique place for visitors. These markets are more popular in streets of Paris, France and other parts of Europe. I loved the fruit prices and wide selections/so clean and organized with passionate employees enjoying their jobs. Cashier was quick and experienced. Box of $6.99 Russian coconut almond candy was very strong in flavor and coconut/nice! The box itself was beautiful too. Tempting. Chocolates were all outstanding from the box covers. Most quality goodies can be found for under $10 per box/pack. Under $15 range is pretty decent for larger items. Not bad for a good find on Valentine's Day. I'll revisit next time. Inside the market is a modestly lit establishment, but it works well for what they are trying to achieve. The market sells a wide variety of commodities and fresh produce; as well as items from other countries. The service was nice and friendly. Wonderful little market in Downtown Millbrae on the main street. I walk here all the time just for fresh fruits for my kids! They have a great selection of fruit and I find it to be better than the Safeway a half block away. Also want to support local, small businesses so this is the perfect combination! The prices are slightly higher, but when you walk past the store you can actually smell how fresh the fruits are. I always come for their selection of berries outside cuz my toddler survives off of blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries! They also had papaya for a while too when he was on a papaya kick - I didn't even know how to pick a ripe papaya, but one of the folks stocking the fruit helped me pick a perfect one. read more

Apparently it's possible to be insulted while paying in cash. Since anything under $5 requires cash, I counted out exact change, but was told that my quarter was "ugly" and "no one wanted it" and asked if I had another quarter. I was taken aback by such a comment. Sure, it wasn't the prettiest quarter, but it was still a US quarter. So, I had to dig through my change purse to find another quarter. Honestly, I wish I hadn't granted the cashier's request. The produce here is good quality, but every time I pass by I am reminded by this poor customer experience. read more

We love to go to Dean's, but BE CAREFUL OF THE CASHIERS. OUR FAMILY DOES NOT TRUST THEM. This week, I noticed discrepancies between what I weighed before checking out and what I was actually charged for. I bought shallots, which were less than half a pound. I was charged for over one and a half pounds! I saw this on the receipt and asked them to weigh it again. I got a refund, but that was only one of the three discrepancies I found on my receipt by the time I got home. My ginger, which was also under one pound, was also charged for close to one and a half pounds. I don't know how they ended up with these ridiculous weight discrepancies, but keep watch over the cashiers at checkout. Sometimes, their hands touch the scales. This happens a lot lately and does not seem to be an accident. I'm here to buy good fruit, not to be CHEATED out of my hard-earned money. read more

Dean's is hardly my regular grocer for shopping, but every once in a while it's fun to switch it up and see what another ethnic shop might have in store! It was fun going through Dean's frozen section which featured many Eastern European favorites and then heading over to the jarred and canned section to find a vast assortment of pickled vegetables and canned fish. There was a sale on some sardines today, from Portugal no less so I picked up a can for lunch and paired it with some crusty bread and cheese. It brought me right back to Spain (yes, I know it's not Portugal but it's close). It was delicious and was about half the price I'd pay from any other American grocer! Know your prices friends! I also spotted a small bar of halva which I'm curious to try later. I really liked that I didn't have to commit to a large square of it. I also picked up the ingredients I had planned to use for meal prep this week. It was a little more expensive than my Asian shops but not too much so. The quality of almost everything looked really good today and there were also staff sorting through the produce and removing the ones past their prime. read more

No manager on duty during the busy rush & after speaking with him on the phone while I waited at the store, He refused to make an adjustment to the price, Was marked $19.69 on the shelf & scanned it in at $23.69 in their favor. No consideration just bad customer service whatsoever. Hardball attitude telling me "take it or leave it" Outragious! Checkers are very friendly though hard to understand. I miss living in the area and going to Dean's Produce for fresh and reasonably-priced produce. They have a great selection of produce but also have some items that you typically do not find in big box grocery stores. I love to be able to support local businesses whenever I can. Dean's is located in a pretty busy part of town and sometimes, you can't find parking in front or even within a block or so. Usually, that's when I give up and come back some other time. As there are a lot of restaurants on this street, we used to always shop here after grabbing a meal at one of the local spots. It's so convenient to be able to do this. Not only do they have produce, but they have other groceries for purchase. This is the first place that I was able to buy Kinder chocolates as well as Milka chocolates. LOL. It's definitely a cool store to browse and explore. You might find an item that you never thought you needed. Yay for local businesses! read more

I am hoping somebody finds his review helpful and at worst save you some money. I shop at Dean's produce in Millbrae once a week I spend on average $50 so that's $200 a month. Overall their quality is fair I tend to be a regular buyer of the jumbo blueberries that are a whopping $10 a basket plus tax the last month and a half this year on four different occasions I bought the basket of blueberries they were completely tart and sour although claiming to be the sweetest batch which I don't mind spending $10 a basket for but when they don't live up to their name and I go back to get my money when they know I'm a regular customer to battle me over the refund is completely unprofessional and rude especially when I offered to give them my debit card to look it up that's why I make purchases on a debit card in case I don't have a receipt. I have had similar experiences with other fruit including avocados and blackberries being completely rotten by the next day my advice sample your fruit or vegetable which ever it may be before you buy it. Not to sound racist because I'm not that at all but the newer short young Latin girl at the front counter needs an attitude adjustment you don't treat returning customers that have been entering the establishment for five plus years that way. Sample the fruit folks that's all I'm saying nobody wants to refund money but you have to stand behind your product it's part of doing business and being honest with your customers. read more

I try to shop at independently owned businesses. Dean's is owned by a Greek family. Dean is the grandson of the founder. There is a really interesting variety of products including many Greek items like frozen filo, cheeses, olives, olive oils and baked goods. The produce is usually very fresh and not expensive. There is a newer, larger location on 4th St. near El Camino in San Mateo, but parking is easier in Millbrae read more

I bought almonds a couple of days ago. They were still green, not fully ripened. The kernel inside did not form. I decided to return my purchase and asked to talk to the manager. When he came up to me I tried to explain to him the problem. He became defensive and angry with me. He raised his voice. He said that they had sold tons of this product and no one has returned. I would never ever try to return any staff to the store any more. It is better to lose a few dollars than to listen to the rudeness of the manager. People would not usually bring bad produce back, so not be scolded for damaging them with improper storage or people just simply don't want to go back or they might not save the receipt. read more

This store needs to be cleaned up! The baskets have old wilted produce stuck in them; the floors are usually dirty, and the shelvess have unpriced cans with layers of dust on them. More than half the items are not marked with price labels and the store's sanitation is really unsightly and unhealthy. The county's health department needs to check on these unsanitary conditions. read more

The selection of honey is good and the are a couple honeys from Millbrae, and also a chunky honey. Haven't tried that but looks like the kind with cappings in it. We are regular customers of both their San Mateo & Millbrae locations. This family-run business has a large selection of fresh produce at the best prices. They have a great specialty & international product selection as well. We've been consistently impressed by the quality of their produce compared to other shops in the area and the fact that they bring in new items regularly to further expand their specialty offerings. Especially now, during the Covid crisis, it's apparent how much care is put into their stores from keeping their shelves stocked to the cleanliness/sanitary practices of the store. This place used to be hustling and bustling with the freshest produce. I don't know if it has changed ownership, but It has gone down a lot. Their produce is hardly ever stocked and what is stocked, is not fresh. It's a shame, because this used to be my place. I went in today to fill my fridge for the week, all I ended up buying was pita bread because that's the only thing that was fresh. The place looked a mess and nothing was stocked. For years I've been purchasing my fruit from this business . Two days ago I purchased my fruit/berries, a $30.00 purchase) and this morning several of the berries were moldy. I went back to show them just now, I had no receipt and they made no attempt to replace. I was shocked. I guess it was foolish of me to think they would care and replace them. While others spend their whole paychecks at WF, I'd rather spend mine here because they are equally affordable as they are a bit pricey, due to their imported goods and some exotic produce. However, I always seem to find items that I never knew I always wanted! I've passed this little store through the years and have seen the crowds in the late mornings/early afternoons; which usually is a good sign. But me being me- I hate crowds and usually run the opposite direction. This year, while waiting for my sister to meet me at Peet's and got bored, I wandered into Dean's out of boredom and WHOA *life-changing*! I made my rounds through the whole store- at least 3 times. I had no plans to buy anything, but instead, left with a jar of $22 Hawaiian honey (worth every penny!) Milka chocolates, containers of berries (including gooseberries), and cheese. I would have bought more, but had to walk home with all that stuff. My sister, in return, had to wait a while for me at the coffee shop, but the unexpected errand was so much fun! My second trip back to the store was the following Monday when they opened at 7am. I found that this is the BEST time to come- when their produce and bread deliveries arrive every day. I love when I get first grabs, doesn't everyone?? Among my favorites- veal frankfurters, bread (I've shared many snaps of my cheat days eating with nutella *never sorry*) dried porcinis, selection of honey and seasonal fruits. My go-to spot when I want fresh and affordable produce at the ready. A lot of their vegetables and apples' prices are much cheaper in the area and they offer a wide variety of Mediterranean and Eastern Europe foods and snacks. There's a section in the back with crates underneath the onions and garlic. There, you can find bundled vegetables and fruits for only $1. Those are perfect if you're ready to cook with the foods within that day or the next. I usually go after the tomatoes when I want to make my own tomato sauce! Just an FYI, you need to spend at least $5 to use a credit card. Please support this Mom and Pop grocer! read more

Perfect local produce market! Vegetables. Fruits. Pretty good variety of local produce. The produce is priced fairly, and pretty fresh and good. Great value! Service is unfriendly, but that's ok. I don't stay long. Lines are short. In addition, they have nuts and beans and grains. Good selection. Canned goods are great selection, mostly Mediterranean style (my guess is the owners are Greek or Lebanese or from somewhere similar.) Cheeses, and a small amount of frozen food. You won't find the 80,000 items Safeway carries. But most of what I need is there. read more

Either my review was effective or they coincidentally started doing some upgrades. Every cashier is now equipped with new chipped card reading machines. They aren't the old school ones, these read chips, take modern cellphone payments, and etc. Other than that, they also changed out their old refrigeration.
