As others have already written, Jay is the man. I moved to the city from San Diego about 9 months ago and I immediately missed my go-to SD barber shop. After trying out several other places around SF, I finally discovered Sunset Barber Service and haven't wavered since. This is my staple place to get a great haircut in the city for a fair price. Even though Jay loves the Niners and I love the Chargers, he manages to keep it civil and still delivers every time. $18 for a no-frills haircut the way you want it. I'll be straight up & honest - I don't get my hair cut here, I went in my pre and early teen years (Dad brought me) for a while and my hair can be kind of difficult, the cut would look good for a month then it'd grow out uneven. I do have another person that cuts my hair well that I've been going to since i was a kid. That aside - Sunset Babrer is a great place for most guys (young & old) to get their hair cut well and a good experience. By good experience I mean: - no appointments, sometimes there's a line out the door which in my book means it's a damn good business inside (if you don't want to wait go when there's less likely to be a line, this doesn't require rocket science to figure out) - excellent magazine reading for any guy - after the hair cut is done they pull out that electric back massager, man that feels good! - fast service with comfortable casual conversation between the barber and customer is more than welcome, sometimes the barber's express their opinions quite boldly but don't worry about it resulting in them botching your hair cut My Dad has been going there probably since soon after it opened and he still goes there. Not that my Dad has perfect taste - but getting one's hair cut at the same place for 30+ years implies that this place does a damn good job. read more

This review is a little late, so sorry to my avid fans...lol First of all let's start with the before I came here. A lady from a salon I won't mention cut my hair and really did a hack job. She was a nice enough lady, thats why I wont mention her salon name here, but she gave me a bad haircut. And no matter how good you think you look a bad haircut will always make you look like crap. I wore a hat for two weeks until my hair grew out. Out of desperation I checked on reviews for barber shop in trusty ole Yelp and came across Sunset Barber. I read all the positive reviews and thought what the hell lets see if the all the hype is true. Well IT IS! Seriously no bullshit guys. I came in and Jay worked on my hair. He evened out the missed spots the lady goofed on. He gave my hair that smooth look no one has EVER been able to do. And this is no bullshit, I have never had a BAD HAIR DAY since he cut my hair, SERIOUSLY! He is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. His shop is clean and like everyone says, there are two plasma screens going. He had vintage Muhamed Ali fight running when I came in. These negative reviews crack me up. How could anyone possibly give Jay a negative review? I've been going to Jay for close to six years and I've never had an anything but a fantastic haircut from the guy. His level of professionalism and attention to detail is near impossible to find in this city. He's incredibly consistent and he has a different approach for each client. Some barbers just have one cut, that's definitely not Jay. Also, it's absolutely fair game to engage glowingly with Jay about the failure of any local sports teams. Just expect him to dish it back. Also, it goes without saying that like any professional service, just because Jay is arguably the best in SF, he may not be the best barber for you. Jay cut my hair fast and direct. I have a unique scalp and he understood and accepted the challenge. I was in and out within 15 minutes of sitting in the chair. Perfect cut and i left feeling really good about what i got. I grew up in the sunset and always passed the shop when i was on the N- Judah. Been going to Sunset Barber Service for years. Since Jay's father ran the place and now Jay his son, I think they're going on 40-45 years at that location, must be doing something right. It's always a pleasure going there and even though there can be a wait, it's totally fine. It's an old school men's barbershop that doesn't take appointments, keeping thing simple, first in first out. There aren't that many men's barbershops left in the city besides the hipster shops that charge north of $50 for a cut. You get a great deal and great experience at this place. read more

I just was in to this place for the first time and the barber had about 4 people waiting in the place. I wasn't approached or even greeted. He just pointed to a free seat. I asked him how long the wait was and he said about an hour. So I asked him if I could come back later. "Sorry first come first serve basis". Okay? So I'm supposed to wait one hour and don't even get an offer to schedule another time? I'm outta here. I have had many "meh" hair cuts in the world, but what really sets this place apart is Jay's attitude. Whenever I ask about something with my cut, he would give me the biggest attitude to fix it. I mean if you are making a living cutting hair, then you should not have an attitude in making those adjustments. Also, I put my name on a list to get my haircut because there are no reservations, and someone tried to cut me. I spoke up and Jay was like, well you guys figure it out. C'mon man, have some integrity and speak up for your customers. If he gave the best cuts in the world, then maybe I might tolerate his attitude, but his cuts are below average at best. Its Saturday and I'm flying at 630AM on Monday to the east coast for a trade show. Find Jay on Yelp with great reviews, walk-ins welcome, so down the street I go. Get to the shop, I'm four deep on the list, so take a seat and enjoy the game showing on the flat screen. Jay is quick and efficient, the guys in front of me all seem to be regulars who leave happy. I'm up, Jay asks me what I want, and shortly after I'm on my way out with a clean cut which turned out better than expected. OK , I love getting pampered just like any other person- finger nail, toes and hand rubs. You know the type but for years I have been putting off the facial hair. Yes- indeed i have my own mustache and a neck beard too boot that i let run loose like a 26year old hipster on a track bike. I'm telling you before Issa, I was looking like a Zapatista who was breed-ed with an Amoeba Record employee. Yikes ! well enough is enough- so i took my semi-pretty little face down to S.B.S and Issa the owner lathered and took out the blade and gave me a good old fashion shave that put my face back into adult hood... You can talk about anything to Jay, he's very intelligent and will make sure you leave the building looking sharp as ever with that new haircut.
