A hot sunny day combined with the mop on my head lead me to check out the neighborhood barber shop. I PI'ed the barbershop before i even left my house on yelp and saw the reviews and thought that I would give it a whirl. I was not disappointed. I took my 5-year-old son with me, and I thought it was pretty cool to have father and son giving father and son a haircut simultaneously. I liked the decor, and the guys are nice. However, I was very disappointed with the experience. The father starting cutting my hair before asking how I wanted it. And despite instructions to keep the same style and just trim it, I thought the haircut my son got looked awful. His bangs were much higher on one side than the other. I went to Sunset Barber today to the second chair, I believe he is the son. It was a great experience, I got a haircut and shave. The only down sides was the towels and shaving cream weren't real hot (luke warm) and he used a safety razor, not a straight edge. The up side is that my face is still so smooth tonight, that is as I was just shaved. He paid attention to detail. THE WAY UPSIDE was the massage, WOW. I was so relaxed when I left, it wan't funny. This is the best place to get a great haircut for a good price. What I like best is that massage thing he gives at the end. The shop is nice and clean with two plasma tv's on the front and side of the walls. Jay has a great personality and cuts just the way you want it. This is a REAL barber shop. This is where men go, are you a man? Then go. Jay will take care of you. It's a one man show- but while you wait, there's plenty of masculine reading material, and a massage chair if you're into that. Normally I don't give 5 stars, but this is a family owned shop. It was opened decades ago by the current owner's father, and Jay took over his father's profession. You don't see a lot of that nowadays. For $18+tip you cant get any better than this. read more

Skilled, consistent, and a good price ($18 for a regular cut). I've been here maybe five times in one year but Jay recognizes me and remembers my usual cut. Today I sat down and he just started working away. No more "Irish hair" on this mug for a while! The best barbershops I've found are usually a one-man, local operation and this shop is no different. If you come at peak times then prepare to have a couple of people in front of you so bring a book, grab one of the magazines, or use the apparently free wifi (I haven't used it myself but there's a sign on the wall). Edit: I should mention that my "usual" cut is a series of mumblings with 'tidy' and one or two other vague directions thrown in. Jay is able to interpret that into an actual haircut. read more

Let me put it this way: I moved to San Jose 5 years ago, and this place is still where I get my hair cut. I tried many new places when I had first moved, ranging from Supercuts to expensive salons that I, being a dude, was pretty embarrassed to even walk into. Everyone who has ever cut my hair has told me "your hair grows really weird/is hard to cut" and then has proceeded to make my head look like it lost a fight with a lawnmower. They just remodeled the place and have two flatscreen TVs - one facing the waiting customers and one facing the barber's chair. He seemed in a hurry, two more customers waiting. I could have done better at a quick clips. Without question, this is the best barber shop in the entire city (probably the entire Bay Area!). This place has been around almost 40 years with the same barber, who is a master at his craft. He has been working with his son for the past several years, who will eventually take over the business full time so his father can retire. This is as authentic as you can get for a barber shop, and the key are the barbers - they are pros, give great cuts, and are nice/friendly guys! This is a real barber shop, with real barber shop talk, magazines, etc.. The place has also just been completely remodeled and has a nice flat screen tv and a nice new look.... Ive gone to fancy salons and had insanely expensive haircuts, but the guys at Sunset Barbers seem to cut my hair better and create a great atmosphere at the same time. I am now a regular... This is what I have been looking for in a barber shop (and I use those words deliberately -- this isn't an over the top men's salon trying to pass itself off as a barber joint). I went in there, and the usual barber left out of town to watch the warriors game in Cleveland, so his dad was there to replace him. I told him i wanted a bald taper on the sides and back, and to trim the top. He faded my sides instead of giving me a taper, then argued with me about what i said i wanted, and put words in my mouth. He didnt even blend the fade. Looks like a ugly chinese bowl cut. Do yourself a favor, and dont go here. I dress professionally for work and this haircut is very embarrassing. read more

I went in here a week ago but realized after I left that my hair wasn't quite short enough on top. I went back in and they fixed it up with no charge. These guys definitely care about customer service. I appreciate the magazine selection and water too. Great place, will return again for sure. I've been going to Jay's shop for haircuts for about a year and a half now. First things first, the cuts are fantastic. Clean, quick, and custom. He isn't just mowing down your head with a the clippers set to size 3, he really makes the cut work for your head and style. Secondly, the price is reasonable. It's $18 for a haircut and I usually throw him $20-22 depending on how much cash I have on me at the time. Third, you get to read a bunch of Playboy's while you wait.
