If you are looking for the place that is on every list for having "the best nachos and best margaritas in Boston" then look no farther...that place is gone. It sadly went out of business and was taken over by a new owner, new chef and new bartender. So despite going by the same name, keeping the same setup and claiming that certain things are "the same as before" that would be nearly impossible with a new staff. If you are familiar with their old nachos and margaritas then you will be able to tell that they are not the same. The new sunset cantina is good but I can think of other places with better nachos, margaritas and more options for food. That is not the fault of the new owner or anyone. The old place went out of business and I wish the new owner the best of luck. I went back after they reopened hoping for the award winning nachos and margaritas and I was let down and will not be returning. read more

I tried three of their drinks, all were great but my favorite was the strawberry margarita. Perfect if you're looking for something refreshing and sweet. And for food you have to try the nachos. It's around $16 and perfectly enough to feed 4 people. We got the one with chicken and we loved all of the toppings. read more

Since this weekend was about the WomanBaby's milestone, whatever she wanted to do, we complied. Even if that meant eating Mexican food late night. Kelci our pint size Server took exceptional care of our table of many & the multitude of questions, orders & such. Even with my solo inquiry, I too was able to partake while everyone else consumed Quesadillas & Cocktails. The soon to be Graduate & every other person at the table got the Blackened Chicken Quesadillas while I got the Marinated Swordfish Skewers. A very bad experience in this restaurant, we ordered some appetizers they were good but afterwards the food was disastrous. Burned hamburgers seem that cooks need glasses and know how to differentiate something cooked from burned. If the restaurant have chef ‍ he need to teach the worker how to cook or fired and get professional people . read more

I love the food here! I had the best drink ever when I came called a Bahamarita with a sugar rim. I'm obsessed! I wish it were a bit stronger though. I had two which are a big size and I wasn't tipsy. I ordered the Filet Mignion Sliders for an appeteaser. They were so delicious but I wish there was more inside. One of mine was almost completely bread. But when they did have a bite full of meat it was amazing. For my meal, I ordered a chicken quesadilla with fries on the side. The quesadilla is STUFFED full of chicken, and I could barely eat half of it. It reminded me of when I was in Mexico, and I had maids who made the best quesadillas. Also, the salsa is real salsa, not just pico de gallo (which I do love, but I like both).Their portions are HUGE! My server was very nice but was not very attentive. That is why my review is 3 stars. I had to get up to ask for the check. He said he thought I wanted to continue talking because I was talking at the table. I really wanted to try the black & tan cheesecake (cheesecake with chocolate cake on top... omg...) but I had forgotten because I was so annoyed the waiter didn't check on us. Looked around and saw that everyone was ordering Nachos so I ordered a Full for our table of 2. They were so good - should have ordered an XXL. The margaritas were pretty cheap and strong enough. I ordered the Steak Burrito as a BOWL (big mistake). It wasn't very filling due to the smaller portion size, and didn't look nearly as good as my friend's Chicken enchiladas. I'll probably get Enchiladas next time. Also, the DJ in the corner was trying his best to get people to dance but it wasn't that poppin' despite it being a Saturday night. This was a restaurant/bar I frequented while studying at BU. I was amazed when I returned after over 5 years. The place looks amazing! It was such a relief that one of my favorite spots was not just still standing, but incredibly improved. So many bars and restaurants on Comm Ave were shut down due to the pandemic. But Sunset Cantina thrived thanks to the new management. I highly recommend taking advantage of their daily $6 margaritas. They are too delicious. The staff and service is unbeatable. This is my favorite mexican restaurant in the Boston area. It's deff not very ambient (loud music, lots of college kids), but the food is amazing. Tuesdays they have $5 margaritas and $3 tacos!! The steak nachos are so so so good. I recently got the Burrito with steak and veggies and it was one of the best burritos I've ever had. My friend got the chipotle enchiladas with chicken instead of shrimp and that was also so so good. All the servers I've had are also super nice and the food comes out super quick. I had a great meal here! My group came in during a late Saturday afternoon and got a table right away. I immediately noticed the beer list - it had many familiar crafts but also some limited items on draft I had not seen before. Perfect. The portions at this place are huge! The "full" sized nachos more than satisfied four people. I am very happy that we did not opt for the XL! The nachos themselves were fine, nothing out of the ordinary. For my entree I ordered a mug of Tex-Mex chili that was also pretty par for the course. It came with a bunch of chips that I didn't really need but did use to scrape up the last bits of chili. A size up from the mug is the bowl, which is big enough to put your face in! I just didn't need that much food. Overall Sunset Cantina had a fun vibe and my friends and I had a great time hanging out with good Tex Mex food. I would be happy to drop in again. read more

Sunset has always been a staple of my college life and although I don't venture over as often, this place will always be one of my Boston staples. Why? The nachos. Seriously, you can't get a more satisfying plate of food to share with your friends, sober or hammered. Their list of margaritas can cover any kind of mood you're feeling for the night, and believe me, they have a heavy hand on the tequila. The staff, especially at the bar area, are awesome and chill. They opened up a more renovated space towards the back on the right side and I will say it feels like a completely different restaurant compared to the left side (the OG). Bring a group of friends and get yourselves a huge platter of nachos, a couple of margaritas, and make some memories. You may not remember the finer details of the night when you wake up the next morning, but you will remember having a great time (and bomb guacamole) and you'll be itching to go back for another plate of nachos and a margarita (or three). read more

Had a Chicken Filet burger with "main street USA" toppings (red onion, lettuce, tomato, American cheese)--chicken was generously portioned and deliciously tender. The toppings were a perfect combination and the bun was soft and fluffy, and much heartier than the typical burger bun, which helped limit sogginess--the sandwich stayed together until the end (even when I added my girlfriends guacamole)! Overall it was a great grilled chicken sandwich for a decent price--$5.99 + $0.99 for the toppings. It probably could have been two meals for a small person, but I was so hungry I ate the whole thing. The chips it came with though were kinda weak--very chewy, stale tasting. Wouldn't recommend getting those again, but also wouldn't want to pay extra to substitute. Service was okay--a bit slow but it was pretty busy so mostly forgivable. I forgot how incredibly loud it is here--it's hard to hear people talk! read more

This place is an absolute disaster. We were a party of six. We were there for 2hrs. We ordered drinks, and an appetizer as well as our dinner. Drinks came 20 mins later. So we ordered a second round to be safe. 10 mins later our appetizer and some of our dinners come out. But the person delivering our food brought it to every table along the way to see if it was there's. Now was ask about the rest of the meals and she just walks away. Then our server comes back to inform us the drink will ba a few more minutes. So we ask when do you think everyone's dinner will come out and can we have some silverware. Another 10 mins the rest of the food comes out and the next round of drinks. Hiwever two of them were Coronas and they are out of them now. So we switch it to Modelo. We eat dinner, sub-par at best. We beg for our two drinks and the check. 20 mins later we get the check but no Modelos. Our bill as items we never ordered. To many of items we did and this s@&t show of a restaurant as the nerve to put a Kitchen surcharge fee on the check.. I am telling you there are hundreds of places to go in Boston. Do not go there. Taco Bell would be a better choice. read more

Sunset used to be a local favorite for me, but after a recent visit I probably won't be back for a while. To summarize: the nachos are decent. I recommend the pulled pork. The meat is hidden under a layer of chips and the cheese used isn't nacho cheese and doesn't melt that well. But it's still pretty good. My concern is their embarrassing lack of salsa. Each serving size of nachos (half, full, XXL) comes with the same amount of salsa: 1 tiny plastic ramekin of tomato deliciousness. Whether you order the half or the XXL, you get the same micro-thimble size plastic cup of salsa. During my most recent visit, I shared the XXL pulled pork nachos with 3 friends. We were given their standard nosehole full serving of salsa. After sparingly sharing the salsa betwixt the 4 of us, we boldly (and politely!) requested more. Our server was friendly and brought us the extra salsa instantly. All was good. UNTIL we received the check. Turns out our pea-sized amount of extra salsa cost us $1.79! Ironically, the same price as a *jar* of salsa authentica from Trader Joe's. IMO extra salsa on top of a XXL order of salsa should be complimentary or served for a small fee of, say, $0.50. It was disappointing to be nickel and dimed for salsa at a 'Mexican' restaurant. Especially one that buys their salsa IN BULK and doesn't make it in house! Next time do I have to BYO from TJ's? The food and drinks were pretty good, however this review is mostly based on how a 20% tip was added to our tab without telling us!! We were a 4-top that sat at the bar for 1-2 drinks each, 2 of us got apps and one got a salad. We were there for about an hour. I've worked in restaurants and usually if there's a certain party size (usually 6-8 is the threshold) that meets an auto-grat standard, the server or bartender will say something before order are put in. No one helping us mentioned anything about an auto grat and there was nothing mentioned on the menu about it being added either. On review now as we're venoming, we found a 20% auto gratuity, and then realized when the second receipt came where we signed, they listed the new auto-grat total as the base line for tip suggestions!! We ended up tipping another 20% which came out to a tip total of $60 on a $100 tab!!! Absolutely crazy and left a sour taste in our mouths.... It really ruined the experience for us and we won't be back. read more
